Mauro Bergonzoli is an Alchemist
I fell in love with Mauro’s work long before I met Mauro the man. When in
2008 in Buenos Aires Argentina an Italian Museums Director handed me
a big pink Bergonzoli art catalogue, I was instantly smitten. For the first
time I saw contemporary art which perfectly bridged the old Masters
with the modern world, playing with and newly interpreting art historical
Sujets. I was intrigued to meet the modern Renaissance Maestro behind
these paintings and my eternal addiction to his magical art began.
Mauro is blessed. His gift is transforming his intuitive visions into powerful
artworks designed to uplift and energize their viewer. He absorbs
what he feels around him, the dark frequencies as well as the light ones.
His eyes filter out the negative and capture the positive vibrations as he
creates mystical windows of color which lead the observer into a magical
world filled with joy, beauty and humor. When visions for a painting
shoot into his head, one eye usually goes in one direction and the other
somewhere else, like Marty Feldman in „young Frankenstein. It took me
nearly two of the now 16 years working by his side as his „Muse“, to figure
this process out. When these visions happen, I’ve learned to send
him straight to the Atelier so he can directly download the inspiration
onto a fresh canvas. If that moment of insight isn’t seized immediately, a
creative traffic jam occurs behind his eyes and the same vision might not
return for some time.
Mauro’s visions began at a very young age. He always trusted them
completely and like a medium, let his steady hand channel these happy
images from a higher place. Born in Milan Italy on Christmas Eve 1965 as
son of an engraver, little Mauro chose to turn the misery of people often
forgetting his birthday into imagining that the entire world’s December
decorations were lighting up just for him. His credo: “Sono fortunato! I’m
the lucky one!”. At the age of six he already began working the engraving
machines to help his father and learned the important art of precision
and clean lines. Drawing became his passion and his escape from a dark
childhood. Violence and abuse during his early years deeply scarred his
body and soul. Always the optimist, he managed to turn every challenge
into something good. In Italy, San Mauro is celebrated as the Saint of
snow. Mauro‘s late mother always told him, „la neve pulice e rinuova tutto“
- the snow cleans and renews everything. She had bright blue eyes,
one of which she lost to cancer and had to replace with a glass eye. The
daily challenge in his youth of seeing which of her eyes was the real
one had a profound impact on Mauro. The always open, all-seeing blue
eye and later the happy “Magic Bunny” would become his characteristic
trademarks.
Lucky Mauro was blessed with a schoolteacher who recognized his drawing talent and convinced his parents
to send him to art school. Mauro seized the opportunity, worked his way out of the reality he was born into and
created the one of his dreams. With 16 he began selling his comics and drawings. Soon after companies like
Ferrero and Geox hired him as a freelance artist, illustrator and film director for advertising campaigns and
commercial film work. He keeps his finger firmly on the pulse of the contemporary, knows how to visually interpret
what the client wants and understands the art of turning products into best sellers. His acclaimed Nutella
Christmas spots receive awards in Italy and Cannes. In the year 2000 Mauro exits the advertising world and
begins successfully showing his artwork internationally in exhibitions, galleries, fairs, and museums.
Like Picasso or Gerhard Richter, Mauro masters many different styles of painting. His highly recognizable classic
Bergonzoli style shows ladies in side profile with their lovers, animals or traveling around the world, often
with adoring Magic Bunnies close by, falling from the sky and admiring beautiful women. His gentlemen series
“Empty Heads – teste vuote” began to emerge from his brush during the Corona period. He often and happily
paints elegant vintage and sports cars, especially since our friend and neighbor is Alois RUF in Pfaffenhausen,
only a few minutes drive away from the Country Atelier. Mauro also loves to create abstract waterlily landscapes
which he started on a trip to Bali in 2011. After a day at the beach, he was itching to work so he drove to
Ubud, bought 10 meters of canvas and painted for three weeks straight. Currently he takes a lot of inspiration
from his own selection of water lilies in his Atelier garden lake. His favorite one is called “Florida sunrise”.
Romantic snow scenes of Venetian cityscapes with baroque barons and chic signoras are some of his most popular
paintings for which there is often quite a waiting list. At the Biennale di Venezia 2019, the historic Hotel
Cipriani in Giudecca exhibited a series of his “modern Canalettos”. Even Yoko Ono selected his conceptual
artwork “Acqua Alta” for her exhibition PEACE IS POWER at the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts in 2018. Mauro
had designed a large Murano glass bottle on which he painted the Venetian skyline with liquid chrome. Water
poured into the bottle symbolized the extreme danger of flooding, which, together with too much tourism and
huge cruise ships, threatens the future of this historic city.
Mauro loves to dress well, even when he works. Dressing well is part of his Italian DNA. No paint splattered all
around, no struggle, no frustration or mess. He doesn’t experiment and then throw away a painting or doubt
his creative process. He jumps right in, one shot, no sketch, directly onto the white canvas. He works in Zen
mode: calm, focused, happy, balanced and listening to all kinds of music. He paints with ease, even with dogs,
kids, collectors and friends moving around him in the Studio. While layers of paint are drying, he plays the
guitar or drums, tends to his garden and talks to the plants. Gardening and a healthy plant-based diet have
become a great source of energy for him, especially after his heart disease a few years ago. To free Mauro of
the daily mandatory pharma cocktail after two emergency stents, we switched entirely to a plant-based diet. No
animals, no alcohol, no sugar and no cigarettes. He was soon able to say goodbye to all pills and is now living a
significantly healthier and more productive life than before. This experience inspired us to write and illustrate
our bestseller art cookbook MAGIC FOOD published in 2021 with Callwey Verlag.
Mauro’s gaze is always focused on the positive with childlike innocence and pure wonder. He teaches the importance
of maintaining this perspective not only to his own 5 daughters and 2 granddaughters, but also to
all the children with whom he often works with on school projects and art courses. In 2022 he spent a week
painting a 45 meter long “Art Wall” together with 200 students from grades 1 to 6. His cuddly comic rabbit
the “MAGIC BUNNY”, usually with “I love it!” speech bubble, embodies pure life energy, happiness, magic and
productivity. He likes to tumble through Mauro’s world, lift the mood, stimulate a smile and fall head over heels
in love with Mother Nature and everything his iconic gaze captures. Last year, a Bergonzoli Beauty surrounded
by infinite Magic Bunnies graced the cover of the quickly sold out 50th anniversary issue of Playboy Germany.

For Mauro, painting the positive instead of the negative is a revolutionary act and a conscious decision.
Capturing beauty is his mission. It is also his salvation and his daily bread. His art is his language.
His positive images are his protection. They keep the darkness away, heal old pain and nurture
the soul. He absorbs what he sees and feels and magically transforms everything into something
good, positive and beautiful for us art lovers to enjoy forever on our walls. The message behind his
energizing and uplifting artworks is simply inspiring:
Do you want to transform your dreams into reality and create your own magical world? Remember
to always visualize and focus on what you want, do everything with love, and your wishes are sure
to come true.
Mauro Bergonzoli is an Alchemist.
With Amore and kind greetings,

Funny, friendly, kind and curious, Mauro Bergonzoli’s
magic bunny loves to pop up randomly in paintings,
sculptures, shoes, fashion and accessories. With his
signature blue eye wide open he observes and questions
the world around him. Expressing his thoughts in
abbreviated contemporary statements the magic
bunny often reflects on the current global mood.
Sometimes it’s a lady, sometimes a gentleman bunny,
depending on the artist’s placement of eyelashes and
lips. The magic bunny first began to appear in 2006
when Bergonzoli was working on several museum
exhibitions in South America. In Buenos Aires
Argentina he met and fell in love with his Muse.
“I don’t choose what I paint. The characters just
come to me and ask to be made visible. One day
I was feeling completely free and my magic bunny
simply appeared. He symbolizes reproduction,
freedom, magic and love.”

Lebenskompetenzen vermittelt. Der
Beltz Verlag hat 2022 eine großangelegte
Absolvent*innenstudie veröffentlicht,
die überzeugende Argumente
liefert, warum diese Bildungsform so
wirkungsvoll ist: Die Befragung von 800
Teilnehmer*innen zeigt, dass 88 % der
Montessori-Absolventen ihre Schulzeit
als prägend und positiv bewerten und
sie ohne Zögern wiederholen würden.
In Rohrdorf bieten wir diese bewährte
und moderne Bildung. Unsere Montessori-Fachoberschule
steht für einen
Lernansatz, bei dem Schüler*innen im
Mittelpunkt stehen und von erfahrenen
Pädagog*innen begleitet werden. Wir
bieten einen Raum, in dem Jugendliche
ihre Leidenschaft für das Lernen
entdecken und gleichzeitig ein starkes
Selbstwertgefühl entwickeln können.
Wir sind stolz darauf, aus allen
Ecken des Landkreises Schüler*innen
anzuziehen, die bereit sind, ihre
Bildung in die eigenen Hände zu
nehmen. Unsere Schule ist leicht mit
unserem eigenen Schulbussystem und
öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln erreichbar
und bietet Bildungswege in den Bereichen
Sozialwesen sowie Wirtschaft
und Verwaltung an, die zum Fachabitur
führen. Hier zählt persönliche Entwicklung
genauso viel wie akademische
Leistung, unsere Schüler*innen lernen
ohne Notendruck und nah am Berufsleben.
Die Hälfte des 11. Schuljahres

Hidden in the rolling hills of the Bavarian countryside
lies a magical paradise filled with colorful treasures.
Mauro Bergonzoli’s Country Atelier has become
the artistic watering hole for passionate art lovers
from around the globe. His ever-growing family
of Bergonzoli Collectors flock to this creative
sanctuary in order to quench their thirst for
beautiful, positive, stimulating artworks created
to energize their walls and halls.
The luscious Country Atelier garden is groomed
and cared for by the artist himself. Winter
Spring Summer and Autumn Mauro draws
inspiration from his glorious fruit and nut trees,
fresh vegetables, blooming flowers, singing
birds, and fluttering butterflies. A real “Monet”
bridge crosses the water lily lake underneath a
majestic weeping willow and often appears in
his paintings.
All year around, this Bavarian “Giverny” outside
Munich bursts with life, joy and colors. Cherry
blossoms grow on golden trees, Koi and goldfish
waltz beneath the surface of emerald green
ponds, enchanted frogs pop up on floating
water lily petals, delicate snowflakes settle on
birch branches and everything in sight brings
smiles to faces young and old.

Mauro Bergonzoli

design, animation, film.

Mauro Bergonzoli (b. December 24th, 1965 in Milan Italy) is best known for his Neo-Pop
style and genre-defying modern interpretation of classic draftsmanship. Mauro began his art
journey at a very young age, mastering the art of precision and drawing while working the machines
in his father’s engraving studio. He sold his first comics and artworks while attending
art school in Italy. His talent caught the attention of several prominent advertising agencies
in Milan, who promptly recruited the young artist. A 25-year-long successful career in advertising
and as creative director of commercial and animation films for clients like Ferrero and
Geox followed. In 2000 Bergonzoli chose to focus exclusively on his own art with successful
gallery and museum exhibitions in cities such as Portofino, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Hong
Kong, Milan, St. Moritz, Miami, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, Bologna, Ravenna, Augsburg,
Venice and Palm Beach.
His medium of choice is acrylic on canvas. The classic “Bergonzoli” style is graphic, colourful,
figurative and full of fun details. His artistic language is greatly influenced by his spiritual
inner landscape, drawing on memories like his mother‘s blue eyes, one of which she lost to
cancer during his early childhood, replacing it with a glass eye and leaving an everlasting impression
on the artist. During his youth, Mauro often endured physical violence and quickly
found solace and healing in drawing and painting beautiful images. With his iconic trademarks
- the blue Bergonzoli eye & his famous character “The Magic Bunny” who symbolises
humour, magic, and productivity, he observes the world from within his paintings with a positive
and often ironic point of view. For Playboy Germany’s 50th anniversary 2022 he was asked
to create the Cover artwork and painted an explosion of magic bunnies in awe of a classic
Bergonzoli beauty. The Magic Bunny plays a central role not only in Bergonzoli‘s oeuvre, but
also in his commitment to animal welfare and creative work with the younger generations. As
father of 5 daughters and grandfather to 2 granddaughters, Mauro’s artwork shows his deep
admiration for women and mother nature while reminding his viewer of the power of humour,
beauty and love. Mauro has recently created artistic collaborations with companies such
as: MEGGLE, PLAYBOY, DINZLER, GOEBEL, CAPOLAVORO, SIMPLY-V, MÜLLER, FINORI,
RAVENSBURGER, SAVE THE DUCK, LODENFREY with many more to come.
Director of the Museums & Art Collections Augsburg Dr. Christof Trepesch summarizes Bergonzoli’s
style during his recent museum exhibition “MAGIC ROCOCO” at the historic Schaezlerpalais:
“Mauro Bergonzoli is a painter of the Neo-Pop, a virtuoso of precise lines and radiant colouring.
He captures and interprets his surroundings with strong linear work and joyous eye-catching
chromaticity often enticing his viewer to smile. The Pop Artist observes the world with his own
iconic eye. He commands a profound knowledge of art history, which he plays with and mirrors in
his compositions with great ease while frequently adding skilful strokes of irony. His original profession
is graphic advertising, cartoon drawing, which forms his artistic and technical foundation.
The visual universe Mauro manifests is reminiscent of the vivid loudness and figurative language
of the advertising world as well as the art of comic-strip illustration with entertaining elements of
fantasy. He transports refreshing canvases into the contemporary inspired by his “Swabian Giverny”,
the artists idyllic family residence and creative factory. With the cycle of the „Water Lilies“ he
leaves the overly graphic solidification behind and opens himself up more to the possibilities of
color. As a painting graphic artist he has gradually developed new themes, perspectives and points
of view over the past two decades.“
