Design
Whatever your application, you’ll find
there’s a Genelec loudspeaker model that
is perfectly suited to your needs.
All our designs deliver improved sonic performance, a distinct
aesthetic identity, and a long lifecycle with low environmental impact.
Over the decades, the Genelec R&D team’s dedication to design has
led to the introduction of numerous key technologies—each one setting a
global benchmark for the way modern active loudspeaker systems perform.
From the outset, we have recognised the value of high-quality design.
Internationally renowned Finnish industrial designer Harri Koskinen has
collaborated with us for many years, bringing a unique aesthetic voice to our
loudspeakers. Harri’s subtle and minimalistic design has a timeless quality
that also blends beautifully with many different types of interiors—making it
perfect for installation projects. Harri’s design expertise is an essential part
of Genelec’s identity, and his vision has brought so much to our company.

Sustainability
For over 45 years, sustainable
development has been embedded
in our thinking.
We are so much more than just a technology manufacturer. While
we always strive to produce the finest loudspeaker solutions,
the way we do this involves caring deeply about people, the
environment, the supply chain, and how we create our designs. Sustainable
development has always been embedded in our thinking, and sustainability
is treated with the same importance as profitability and sound quality.
The first priority translates to a long product life cycle, reliability and
low power consumption, which have always been important to us.
Since our installation loudspeakers have a dedicated power amplifier
for each driver—and the power amplification is optimised for each
driver unit individually—this results in a balanced design with no wasted
amplifier power. Since the amplifiers, power supply, crossover filter
electronics, protection circuits and drivers are all integrated inside
the loudspeaker enclosure, this saves both energy and materials.
But the signs of our approach to sustainability are everywhere—whether
it’s the use of recycled aluminium enclosures, the powering of our factory
by renewable energy sources or the constant drive within the company to
reduce waste and our impact on the environment. And all of this is backed
up by our adherence to the highest international environmental standards.

Genelec Smart IP loudspeakers
deliver an immersive soundscape
for exhibition’s debut
In December 2023, a new exhibition
titled Marvel: Earth’s Mightiest Exhibition,
produced by Semmel Exhibitions,
had its world premiere in Wellington,
New Zealand. Offering a fresh perspective
on Marvel’s rich 80+ year history,
the exhibition gives a behind-the-scenes
glimpse into the creation of some of
popular culture’s most iconic stories
and characters—enhanced by an immersive
soundscape from Genelec.
The audio for the project was a collaboration
between Sebastian M. Purfürst of
Berlin-based LEM Studios and acoustic
scenographer, Markus ‘Hossi’ Hossack.
Commissioned to realise the artistic and
technical concept of the immersive sound
installation, Purfürst and Hossack developed
a soundscape that guides guests
into the world of Marvel. “Our main aim
was to develop a reliable, rock steady
and touring-ready audio setup that delivers
cinematic audio quality with a threedimensional
presence and resolution for
the exhibition space,” begins Purfürst.
“As composers, media artists and engineers,
we like to call the development of
the sonic layers of the exhibition experience
‘acoustic scenography’, which
comprises the actual musical narration,
ambient moments, sound effects,
voice-overs, and documentary layers.
The whole exhibition follows a common
musical timeline, and, depending on the
dramatic presentation of the rooms, we
balance out the intensities and complexities
of these acoustic elements.
You might have a cinematic immersive
experience in one room, followed by a
more contemplative space where you
could take in valuable background information
or look at an original artefact.”
Marvel Exhibition
17
Marvel: Earth’s Mightiest Exhibition covers
a 2,000 sq metre space with eleven
themed galleries and a shop. It contains 60
pieces of original comic art, both vintage
and modern, as well as the only known
page to survive from the original Amazing
Spider-Man script. Just like the comics
and films, it explores the relationship
between the extraordinary and ordinary,
shedding light on how these stories resonate
with millions of fans around the world.
In the exhibition, Marvel’s history is told
through rare artefacts, multimedia displays
and immersive technology that
takes visitors on an unforgettable journey,
with Purfürst and Hossack choosing
70 Genelec 4430 Smart IP networked
loudspeakers for the exhibition. “We
utilised a complex matrix of loudspeakers
spread across the exhibition space,
with a central processing unit that feeds
all acoustic events based on the Dolby
Atmos standard,” explains Hossack.
“The biggest challenge we faced before
deploying Genelec’s Smart IP loudspeakers
was the complex routings. We
would have needed a lot more cabling,
for power, audio, networking and so on.
With the Smart IP solution, everything
was much easier—from rigging and
cabling to routing. The loudspeakers
were also the perfect size and integrated
into the space seamlessly.”
The Marvel Universe provided Purfürst
and Hossack with endless inspiration for
musical ideas and sound design. The
audio elements bring the characters to
life—the Captain America statue, which
is frozen in ice, crackles and emits eerie
ambient drones. The surreal multiverse
of Doctor Strange has otherworldly, spinning
wormhole-like sonic particle streams,
and the dark back alleyways of New
York City play out fragments of urban
beats. The rainbow bridge seen in the
pages of Thor comics also has orchestral
and vintage synthesiser sounds.
“This was such a fun project to work
on, but once we had finished our studio
production we faced some complex
on-site challenges,” explains Hossack.
“Reverberations and reflections caused
problems, as well as sound spilling
between galleries. We were also faced
with very tight deadlines for set-up and
on-site mixing. Additionally, the creation
of a high-fidelity listening experience
coupled with highly detailed audio
events and the dramatic concept of
the exhibition was also a challenge.
“The possibilities presented to us by
Genelec’s Smart IP loudspeakers meant
that we were able to resolve all these
issues with relative ease. Thanks to Smart
IP, build time was cut in half—since just
one ethernet cable delivers power, audio

and sophisticated loudspeaker management.
It’s a massive timesaver to
be able to run just one network cable
from each loudspeaker to a nearby network
switch with no amplifiers to worry
about. Cabling is massively reduced
and routing is greatly simplified.
“Finally, the sound quality of Genelec’s
Smart IP loudspeakers is transparent,
detailed and the sheer quantity of loudspeakers
gives lots of energy in an exhibition
setting, which is great. For this
project, the 4430s were the perfect size,
yet delivered studio quality sound.”
“We also found Smart IP Manager to be
an incredibly useful tool. The software
is a big bonus, enabling quick and easy
adjustment of the loudspeaker output
to the acoustic characteristics of each
space. It allows us quick and easy access
to all sorts of parameters, which means
that we can finely tune the response of
each loudspeaker as well as the system
as a whole. Having a loudspeaker of the
same model in such great numbers also
gives you a solid foundation to carry
through the whole exhibition space.
Marvel: Earth’s Mightiest Exhibition has
now finished its run in New Zealand,
with new venues set to be announced in
the coming months. Combining expertly
designed immersive audio with neverseen-before
artefacts, the exhibition is a
walkable comic book that’s a must-see
for any adoring Marvel fans. Genelec’s
Smart IP models offer the ideal audio
solution, transporting visitors to the
centre of the cinematic universe.

INARI, FINLAND
22
New exhibition uses latest technology to
immerse visitors in indigenous lifestyle
24 Sámi Museum Siida
The Sámi Museum and Nature
Centre—Siida—is one of Northern
Lapland’s most popular destinations.
Dedicated to the culture of the Sámi
people, who are indigenous to the Lapland
region, Siida was first established as an
outdoor museum in the 1960s. Visitors
had to wait another 30 years before a formal
museum building—designed by famed
Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa—was
inaugurated in 1998. A further two decades
on, the time had come to expand
and renovate to accommodate increased
visitor numbers and to bring the establishment
into line with modern standards.
As part of the renovation process,
Oulu-based technical systems specialists
Caverion Suomi Oy, supplied and
installed a comprehensive Genelec Smart
IP loudspeaker solution on a Dante AoIP
backbone. Sound designer Aki Päivärinne
from Oioi Collective—experts in interactive
experience design—was responsible
for the sound design for the new exhibits.
The Sámi people—whose region extends
across large northern parts of Norway,
Sweden, Finland and Murmansk Oblast
in Russia—live in harmony with the lands
they inhabit. Their traditional livelihoods
include coastal fishing, fur trapping, sheep
herding, and of course, semi-nomadic
reindeer herding. The newly renovated
museum houses an all-new exhibition
where culture fuses with nature, using
the latest in museum technology to
showcase and celebrate Sámi heritage.
Interestingly, the principal architect of the
new exhibition—named ‘These lands are
our children’ from the Inari Sámi poem
by Matti Morottaja—is none other than
Harri Koskinen, the renowned industrial
designer who has collaborated
closely with Genelec for many years.
“My brief was to recreate a soundscape
reflecting the multifaceted sounds of
nature in Lapland, and design a technical
solution for it,” explains Päivärinne.
“I knew that the open museum hall environment
would be an interesting acoustic
and thematic challenge since all of
the seasons are presented in the very
same room.” Indeed, Sámi culture celebrates
not four but eight distinct seasons
which dictate the rhythm of life
for Sámi people; in addition to spring,
summer, autumn and winter, there is
also spring-summer, autumn-summer,
autumn-winter and spring-winter.
“I wanted to create a soundscape that
would render a natural and authentic backdrop
for the exhibition rather than overpowering
the cultural heritage of the Sámi
people,” he continues. “In a way I created
the backdrop which puts their culture
into context. Considering that the Sámi
still live in close connection with nature,
Sámi Museum Siida
25
26 Sámi Museum Siida
an interplay between nature and culture
seemed like an appropriate starting point.”
Part of the Siida sound design was created
by Pekka Aikio, who is Sámi himself
and extremely active in defending Sámi
rights and heritage. Aikio was responsible
for the sounds specifically related to the
Sámi people’s culture, which Päivärinne
then integrated into the overall soundscape.
When it came to implementing the
sound design, Päivärinne was categoric:
“I knew I would use Genelec loudspeakers
because in terms of sound quality, detail
and transparency, nothing rivals them. It’s
also a Finnish brand—and in a museum
that is celebrating indigenous culture in
an exhibition designed by Harri Koskinen,
it would be sacrilegious to use anything
else! It was also a foregone conclusion
that we would be using Smart IP technology
because the newly renovated technical
infrastructure of Siida is based entirely
on Ethernet cabling—making it very easy
for us to plug into the same network.”
Päivärinne explains that he designed
the system in circular formations for
both exhibition spaces. “I wanted to
create the feeling that the visitor is surrounded
by nature and culture. In the
main exhibition there are two concentric
circles; the inner circle is dedicated to
the audio visual installation that depicts
Sámi culture with its accompanying

soundtrack. The outer circle portrays the
eight seasons of the Sámi homeland.
“Since the space was acoustically challenging,
I decided to shift the focus from
one season to another in a revolving
fashion—a bit like a lighthouse, except
with audio—rather than playing them all
at the same time, encouraging visitors
to move through the seasons sequentially.
There are even some areas of
the exhibition where audio is delivered
through directional loudspeakers or
headphones, to avoid the cacophony of
overlapping music layers in the space.”
Lauri Riihiaho led the team from Caverion
responsible for the Dante network and
loudspeaker installation throughout the
building. He was impressed by the ease
and speed of installation of the Smart IP
loudspeakers. “This was our first experience
with Genelec—and Smart IP in
particular—and frankly, it was a piece of
cake,” he observed. “Our brief was to
install the loudspeakers and configure the
network switches for Dante. We installed
a total of 30 x 4430s plus a pair of 8010s
for one of the Sámi cultural displays
and a 7040 subwoofer used to play out
Sámi Museum Siida
27
Sámi shamanic drum sounds. We used
Genelec’s Smart IP Manager software to
configure the loudspeakers, which was
very straightforward and saved us a lot
of time. We configured the switches, and
everything worked perfectly. We used a
Picturall Mark II media server equipped
with a 32 x 32 Dante card as our main
hub to run all of the museum’s media
content. We connected the loudspeakers
to the Dante outputs of the media server
and that was it—our job was done.
“Smart IP is impressive technology,” continues
Riihiaho. “You only need one CAT
cable to connect the speaker to the network.
You don’t even need to worry about
power outlets as that same cable delivers
power via PoE along with the audio and
control signals. Consequently, a Genelec
Smart IP solution is actually a costeffective
option compared to a traditional analogue
audio system, as you save money
on cabling as well as installation time.”
Staff at Siida are thrilled with the new
exhibition in the renovated and expanded
space. “It’s gratifying to see that Sàmi
culture remains important enough that
visitor numbers continue to increase.
Consequently, the time had come to
modernise and expand,” says sales and
marketing manager, Minna Muurahainen.
“We have increased the area of the building
by 50% which enables us to do justice
to the richness and diversity of Sámi
culture and its intimate connection with
the natural environment. As such, it was
important to us that, where possible, we
used brands whose values mirror our own,
especially on issues like sustainability.
Genelec clearly meets those requirements.
We’re delighted with the new exhibition
which uses the very latest technology to
educate and immerse our visitors into
the Sámi environment, which is today
under threat and deserves a voice. We
see ourselves as an essential part of the
mission to preserve Sámi heritage, and
the deployment of modern—and sustainable—AV
technology to help tell the
story is a key part of that mission.”
I wanted to create the feeling that the visitor
is surrounded by nature and culture.

India in Fashion: Where style, fashion,
culture and sonic excellence collide
In late March, the Nita Mukesh Ambani
Cultural Centre (NMACC) opened its
doors in Mumbai, India. The new multidisciplinary
arts centre holds a 2,000-seat
theatre, two intimate performance spaces
and a fourstorey Art House, marking a
new era for creativity in the city that’s
known for being at the heart of Bollywood.
To celebrate the launch of the NMACC,
a three-day celebration took place combining
musicals and international art
exhibitions. One of which, titled India in
Fashion: The Impact of Indian Dress and
Textiles on the Fashionable Imagination,
celebrated the impact of Indian design on
style across the world with the help of 128
Genelec 4430 Smart IP loudspeakers.
Heading up the project was Mumbaibased
technology and acoustic consultants,
Munro. Tasked with a brief to
create a soft and calming soundscape
that didn’t compromise on audio quality,
the loudspeakers also had to blend
into the background and run continuously
for between 12–14 hours a day.
Kapil Thirwani, audio and acoustic
consultant at Munro, discussed how the
project landed in his hands: “We work
extensively on projects where new ideas
are explored for culture and entertainment.
We were called in mid January
2023 to explore possibilities of adding
an immersive sonic experience to a fashion
exhibition for the NMACC launch.
“The concept was the influence of India
and its fabrics and handiworks on the
world of fashion. The tone of the music
was world music with subtle Indian influences,
and there were 15 zones playing
different tracks to build the soundscape.
We heard a few of them being programmed
and engineered by the brilliant
duo Sandunes and KNa (Sanaya
Adhesir and Krishna Jhaveri). At Munro,
we now had to bring these elements to life.”

34 India in Fashion Exhibition
India in Fashion weaved together India’s
colourful relationship and influence
on fashion across the globe from the
18th century to modern day. Curated
by fashion journalist and Vogue editor
Hamish Bowles, the exhibition explored
everything from the Mughal emperors to
the imperial rule that brought the country’s
craftsmanship over to Europe.
During its two-month run, India in Fashion
was attended by a prestigious line-up of
celebrities and influential figures from the
fashion industry, including Gigi Hadid
and Zendaya. The show placed the
delicate and detailed garments in glass
cages under spotlight, highlighting the
intricacies on the materials from across
the ages. It was the job of Munro and
Genelec to provide an ambient soundtrack
to this stylishly eye-opening journey.
“Munro is well known for its design of
sonic excellence, whether it’s a sound
studio or a performance venue. If we
are hired to design, we have to keep
up to the same design sense for sonic
aesthetics,” explained Thirwani. “This
led us to the Smart IP loudspeakers by
Genelec. They ticked all the boxes, and
they’re great because they run off a PoE+
switch seamlessly via one single CAT
cable. We verified this with similar type
IP speakers and analogue speakers over
electroacoustic modelling simulations
first, then we put together a mini rig for
a singular immersive zone and measured
it to verify performance against the
theoretical model. After this we specified
the solution to the client team.”
Genelec’s Smart IP series supports PoE,
AoIP and sophisticated loudspeaker
management, combining exceptional
audio with single cable networked convenience.
Launched in 2019, their minimalist
aesthetic design also allows Smart
IP speakers to seamlessly integrate
into any project, no matter the requirements.
Featuring Genelec’s trademark
Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE)
and Directivity Control Waveguide
(DCW), Smart IP loudspeakers provide
clarity, intelligibility and uniform coverage,
combined with 24/7 reliability.
“The Smart IP series offers sonic quality,
minimum distortion and good signal
to noise ratio in the chain. All of these
components were really important to us.
Everything is run over a single CAT cable,
which simplifies the installation massively—
and that’s always helpful when you’re
working on a big project like this. We
knew we could rely on Genelec, as they’re
a brand we’ve been using for years. We
have a reputation for providing and designing
some of the best audio solutions in
India, and using Genelec allows us to
maintain that reputation,” said Thirwani.

software allows installers to configure
an almost unlimited number of rooms,
loudspeakers and audio channels, and
includes device discovery, room-equalisation
tools, system organisation and
status monitoring. This enables installers
to deploy Smart IP loudspeakers even on
complex, acoustically challenging projects.
For India in Fashion, the exhibition played
with multiple immersive and stereo zones
stored on two 64 channel TiMAX servers
via the Dante network. These outputs were
then assigned via Smart IP Manager and
Dante Controller. “Time delays and source
intercorrelation data were adjusted and
stored both on the Genelec and TiMAX
software,” furthered Thirwani. “The
TiMAX stored the preset for the show
reel and tracks and the global level variations
between zones, while the Genelec
sources stored the individual local information
of that source in a particular zone.”
and threaded this together with intelligent
yet discrete audio from Genelec to
create a truly immersive experience.
Thirwani concluded: “This was a team
effort, and solutions like these must be
thought through very carefully and executed
by pulling in expertise from all
fronts. From conceptualising to planning
to execution, the project wasn’t perfect,
as there were many challenges on site that
had to be resolved prior to completion.
“I’d like to thank the team involved in
the design and execution of this project;
Utkarsh Naidu, Cyril Thomas, Johan

worked incredibly hard and the exhibition
was a resounding success.”
The completed project was met with

REGAN Vest transforms underground
bunker into exhibition space
R
EGAN Vest is a new museum in
Skørping, Denmark exploring the
geopolitical tensions of the Cold
War. Taking its name from ‘regering’—the
Danish word for ‘government’—the main
attraction is a 5,500 sq-metre secret bunker
hidden 60 metres underground, that
was constructed in the 1960s as a safe
haven in case of nuclear war. A detailed
and informative look at a conflict that
lasted over four decades, REGAN Vest
tells the story in a newly built exhibition
space that’s equipped with a comprehensive
audio solution from Genelec.
“We wanted to create an exhibition in
which the audio-visual elements supported
the storytelling in very subtle
ways,” begins Taintec’s Tue Selmer
Friborg, the audiovisual consultant
that worked on the project.
“The sound had to offer guests an immersive
element, whilst being unobtrusive, and
at the same time we wanted to make an
exhibition which—though complex—would
require as little maintenance as possible.”
Part of the North Jutland Museums,
REGAN Vest is made up of three parts; the
bunker which takes guests to the centre of
the Cold War with its untouched artefacts
and original décor, the master machinists
house—which allows visitors to experience
what day-to-day life was like—and
the newly built exhibition space that tells
the story of political tensions and how
Denmark prepared for nuclear attack.
The Genelec system is deployed throughout
the exhibition space, with Friborg
specifying a solution that relies on the
renowned 4000 Series loudspeakers,
complemented by 7050 subwoofer technology.
Unmatched performance and
adaptability made the models an ideal
choice for the discreet yet high-quality
audio that the exhibition required. “I chose
Genelec first and foremost because of
sound quality,” he furthers. “Other factors
included durability, the five-year warranty,
versatility, and the different size options.”
“The inbuilt amplifiers made for a very

means that I don’t need to bother with
turning amplifiers on and off. I like to make
systems with as few hardware types as
possible because it makes setup time and
maintenance much easier, and the client
does not need to have a huge stock of
different spares. Genelec’s commitment to
sustainability also influenced my choice.”
The system comprises of seven powerful
4030 loudspeakers, five 4020s,
four 4010s and one 7050 subwoofer,
all of which are responsible for providing
the atmospheric soundscapes that
bring the exhibition to life. As guests
enter, the system provides detail of both
sides of the Cold War—East and West—
alongside a projection of a world map.
Quadrophonic surround sound is used
to emphasise the two opposing sides.
In another room, there’s a replica of
a nuclear explosion—which features
intense flashing lights and a blast from
the Genelec loudspeakers. This goes
off at several times throughout the day,
followed by a Danish TV broadcast of the
attack. Additionally, several vintage TVs
and radios play historic clips from the
era, which are reproduced by Genelec’s
ultra-compact 4010 loudspeakers. Friborg
decided on an unconventional approach
for controlling the system, opting for

“When I tested the loudspeakers for the
first time with some loud music, people
were coming from all areas of the building
to hear what was going on. That’s
when I knew they were going to be great.
We haven’t specifically had any feedback
from visitors about the audio, but,
for me, that’s a good thing as it shows it
affects them on a subconscious level.”
Since opening, REGAN Vest has become

Idyllic new hotel combines Nordic
design with state-of-the-art Genelec
Smart IP technology
Kuopio’s Panorama Landscape Hotel
sits at the top of Mountain Tahko
ski resort overlooking a landscape
that could’ve been hand-painted
by Monet. Some guests sit in the clouds
absorbing the natural beauty of the forest,
while others choose to relax in their suites
or in the traditional Finnish design of the
spa. Built by local entrepreneurs Harri
Jokela and Katja Kuulusa, Panorama
Landscape Hotel is a celebration of
Nordic architecture, from the detailed
wood interior to the RAW Genelec Smart
IP loudspeakers located across the site.
Original planning started in 2018, with
construction of the hotel made possible
through investment by former rally
champion Tommi Mäkinen and former
Formula 1 titleholder Kimi Räikkönen—
both legends of Finnish motorsports.
Taking inspiration from Japanese onsen
spas, the idea was to build a hotel
that combined the great outdoors with
local design and tradition. Panorama
Landscape Hotel comprises 10 individual
suites, a natural forest spa and the Havu
Kitchen and Bar which is headed up by
award-winning chef, Kim Mustonen.
An important element of the project was
sound—both acoustically and aesthetically.
Local integrators Viking Pro had
previously worked on another restaurant
for the Panorama team, and the
new hotel was to follow in its footsteps.
“They wanted a Finnish audio brand to
fit with their philosophy of heritage and

innovation,” begins Juha Jäppinen,
co-owner of Viking Pro. “The loudspeakers
were to be used in the suites, as well
as in the restaurant, indoor spa areas,
meeting room, lobby and toilets. We
selected Genelec because the brand offers
solutions that are modern and attractive.
The RAW finish of the Smart IP models
fits perfectly with the hotel’s design.”
With views across the forest and Lake
Syväri, the accommodation was designed
by the award-winning Finnish architect,
Professor Sami Rintala. He wanted to
provide visitors with a unique snippet of
natural beauty, but also somewhere that
has a “deeper effect on the mind, thinking
and overall well-being”, which is reflected
in the outdoor Forest Spa. Wood-fired saunas
bring crackling warmth as the snow
falls outside, and the five pools deliver
complete relaxation. The restaurant also
offers a one-of-a-kind culinary experience
through a combination of oriental modernity
and flavours from the Finnish forest.
“In the restaurant, we installed six 4430
Smart IP loudspeakers in the RAW aluminium
finish with two 7050 studio
subwoofers to deliver smooth low frequency
performance,” says Jäppinen.
“The system is mainly responsible for
background music, but, if needed staff
can connect to wireless microphones
for meetings and announcements.
Close to the restaurant is a separate
meeting space that can be booked
for corporate events, and here we
installed two 4430 models in black.
“In the lobby of the spa, we chose another
two black 4430s, while the toilets and
changing rooms are equipped with two
ultra-compact RAW 4410 loudspeakers.
Each of the 10 suites has its own
Genelec system, too. Two 4020 installation
models in the RAW finish are connected
to a TV, with additional Bluetooth
receiver connectivity if guests want
to play music from their own devices.
Three black 4430s also deliver background
music to the reception area.”
Viking Pro opted for a weather-proof loudspeaker
solution for the outdoor pool and
spa, with these and the Genelec models all
connected to an LD Systems Dante audio
interface, which acts as a network hub for

the entire system. “Smart IP loudspeakers
are great to work with because everything
is sent over a single CAT cable; audio,
power and management, making it very
easy to install,” notes Jäppinen. “We also
used Smart IP Manager software to help
with configuration and room equalisation.”
Smart IP Manager is vital for integrators
wanting to get the most out of their
Genelec system. It offers easy installation
in any acoustic environment, allowing
analysis and corrective equalisation of
problematic room acoustics. In addition to
the Smart IP Manager software, Viking Pro
also used Smart IP’s public API to design
a custom tablet to help with simple system
control. Staff can access the different
zones by using the tablet, and instantly
change volume levels or content if needed.
“Panorama Hotel was an interesting project
from an audio point of view because
the design of the space guided the design
of the system,” concludes Jäppinen.
“Genelec is a local brand that’s built on
heritage, which was important. It’s a huge
bonus that the loudspeakers sound so
good. This project has been in the pipeline
for a long time and the feedback
so far has been excellent. Genelec has
really helped create a harmonious experience
across the entire complex.”

Immerso Hotel
ERICEIRA, PORTUGAL

Relaxation and tranquillity are top of
the menu at elegant Portuguese hotel
Billed as a ‘destination hotel’,
Immerso is an elegant, relaxed
retreat away from the world’s hubbub
but close to the Portuguese capital
of Lisbon. Nestled in the lush valley of a
coastal village, Immerso—Ericeira’s first
5-star hotel—is a haven of serenity dedicated
to wellness, mindfulness, and the
simple pleasures of life in glorious natural
surroundings. Guests can indulge in a
range of wellness activities including sunrise
and sunset yoga and pilates sessions
on the beautiful wooden deck overlooking
the valley. For those looking for something
more energetic, a fully equipped gym is
at their disposal. Afterwards, guests can
relax in the spa where a range of luxurious
treatments and massages are on
offer. There’s also the option to simply
lounge by the beautiful outdoor pool,
sip a cocktail in the bar, or look forward to
a meal in the EMME restaurant that highlights
local goods and organic produce.
Premium audio forms a crucial part of
the overall experience—and for this, the
hotel owners turned to local Genelec
distributor, Garrett Audiovisuais, on
the recommendation of well-known
music producer and composer Elvis
Veiguinha, who was responsible for
developing the hotel sound identity.
“Elvis has known us for more than
30 years,” explains Garrett’s Raul
Fernandes. “He introduced us to
the management team, and after our
detailed discussions, we were contracted
to develop the audio project
for the entire hotel complex. Given the

premium nature of the project, we chose
a solution based on Genelec’s 4000
Series installation loudspeakers.”
The brief was simple—to achieve superior,
studio quality sound that would be
comfortable to listen to at any volume with
no change in performance. According to
Garrett, Genelec offered the ideal solution.
“We opted for the sleek yet powerful
4020 models throughout the chicest
areas of the hotel—that is to say, the
restaurant, the bar and the lounge area,”
notes Fernandes. Eight 4020s serve the
restaurant and bar, while a further four
loudspeakers are installed in the comfortable
lounge area. “We added an in-wall
5041 subwoofer in the restaurant to
reinforce the low end, as well as a pair of
the ultracompact and discreet 4010s in
the spa/wellness zone,” he adds. Systems
from other brands serve in the outdoor
and more casual areas of the hotel.
Genelec’s 4000 Series installation loudspeakers
have been go-to solutions for
AV integrators for many years. Particularly
noted for their clear, intelligible sound
quality and 24/7 reliability, integrators
can choose from four different models

quicker, easier and neater.
depending on their requirements. These
range from the extremely compact and
unobtrusive 4010s, perfect for more
intimate spaces with lower SPL requirements,
all the way up to the powerful
4040 loudspeakers for larger spaces that
demand higher playback levels. All 4000
Series models benefit from rear panel
room compensation switches, enabling the
response of each individual loudspeaker
to be accurately tuned to suit its placement
and the acoustics of the room. All
models are available in black and white as
standard, or the elegant, environmentally
friendly RAW finish in unpainted recycled
aluminium which adds a touch of industrial
chic to any installation. For an even
more seamless aesthetic, there is the
option of 120 RAL colour finishes. Finally,
a vast range of mounting accessories
is available for all models, making them
easy to integrate in almost any location.
“Genelec offers so many advantages
for this type of application,” continues
Fernandes. “As active loudspeakers,
Immerso Hotel
57
58 Immerso Hotel
we don’t have to worry about finding
space or managing cabling for external
amplifier racks—which makes installation
much quicker, easier and neater.
The elegant aesthetic of Genelec
installation loudspeakers makes them
easy to integrate into premium environments—and
of course, the sound
is exceptional. All this combined with
the ability to precisely tailor the sound
of each loudspeaker to the space
makes them a real asset in high-quality,
demanding spaces like Immerso.”
For control, source selection and the
management of other parameters,
Garrett opted for a solution from CUE
Systems which offers intuitive fingertip
control via a touch panel, as well as
a mobile app. A 3-zone media player
from Audac acts as the sound source.
“We’re delighted with what we achieved
at Immerso, and so is the client,” reflects
Fernandes. “It’s a truly beautiful space
characterised by simplicity and elegance—
it’s an organic concept designed to be
in communion with nature. These are all
values that Genelec espouses, so even
philosophically, Genelec was an excellent
fit. At a practical level, Genelec delivers
everything we need—beautiful aesthetics,
excellent sound, long-term reliability
and ease of installation. What’s more,
at the very end of the project, we calibrated
each loudspeaker one by one in
the space using the room response controls
on the back of each device, which
made even more of a difference. The
results are stunning and in perfect harmony
with the hotel’s environment.”

62 Jacy'z Hotel & Resort
Landmark 28-storey hotel is ‘the resort
that never sleeps’
The latest addition to the Gothenburg
skyline is ‘Kineum’, a stunning
28-storey beacon of glass and steel
designed by Reflex Architects that can
be seen from miles around. The building
houses Jacy’z hotel and resort—the
latest venture from Swedish hospitality
entrepreneurs, ESS Group—which offers
a Nordic take on an upscale Las Vegas
resort with all of the opulence and pizzazz,
but not a single slot machine in
sight. Instead, guests can choose from
three restaurants and a stunning pool
club and spa on the top two floors, plus
award-winning conference facilities, a
hotel-within-a-hotel on floors 17 and 18,
a gym and a secret speakeasy bar.
Swedish AV integration experts, Informationsteknik
AB were contracted to design
and supply all of the AV and conferencing
systems throughout the building,
which included over 130 Genelec 4000
Series and Smart IP loudspeakers.
A massive project by any standards,
Informationsteknik were involved from the
very beginning to ensure the best possible
results. “We were given the task of delivering
audio and video for the entire hotel,”
explains Informationsteknik Key Account
Manager, Karl Arnell. “Bars, gyms, suites,
restaurants, spas, elevators, hotel corridors
and lobbies. Everything would be
filled with high-quality, rich sound, worthy
of the hotel’s high level of ambition.
“ESS Group has a lot of accumulated
knowledge about sound and design and a
fantastic sense of the details that create

exciting hotel environments for guests,”
he continues. “Our goal was to fulfill their
vision in everything from product selection
to technical solutions and control systems—creating
the best possible solution
for both the guests and the customer.”
The first step was to invite ESS to a series
of listening tests, so they could see and
hear Genelec technology for themselves,
specifically the 4000 Series and Smart IP
installation ranges. Informationsteknik’s
Joakim Leissner—who was responsible
for system design—recalls that
the client was immediately impressed
by what he heard, as well as the aesthetic.
“Their response—which has since
become a bit of a mantra—was ‘louder!’
We were very happy to oblige!” Following
the demonstrations it was decided that
Genelec systems would be used for
all the public areas, restaurants, bars,
lounges, conference rooms and breakout
areas, the 18th floor hotel suite and
the gym. “Music plays an important part
of the ESS Group hotel experience, and
at Jacy’z the intention was to elevate
the experience even further,” explains
Leissner. “The demos convinced the client
beyond any doubt that Genelec was the
right brand to help achieve this goal.”

Jacy’z project, and comments: “We want
to develop all the time. Jacy’z AV solution
took inspiration from our other hotels—
Ellery Beach House and Steam—where we
have top level technology and conference
rooms. With Jacy’z, we wanted to challenge
ourselves and set the level of ambition
for sound and image even higher.”
“We looked at all the building’s zones and
drawings to see what solutions were possible,”
continues Leissner. “We proposed
products, zone by zone, and developed
room types that were equipped with the
same technical solution. Genelec fits the
bill for most of the public areas—such as
restaurants, bars and lounges—thanks
to their extraordinarily clean, transparent
reproduction, both at high and low levels,
their aesthetic form factor and their small
footprint relative to power output. The
room response controls on the back of
each loudspeaker make them easy to configure
for optimum performance, and they
are available in numerous different RAL
colours if required. From an integrator’s
perspective, Genelec designs are easy to
use as they are active—which means no
external amplifiers to worry about—and we
know we can count on rock-solid reliability
for years, even decades to come. In
a world where sustainability is ever more
critical, this is an important consideration.”
Whilst the majority of Genelec loudspeakers
used throughout Jacy’z are from
the ubiquitous 4000 Series, there are
certain areas where Informationsteknik
opted for a Smart IP networked loudspeaker
solution—namely the boardrooms
on the 4th floor and the grand
suite on the 18th floor. “Smart IP definitely
takes the Genelec experience to
the next level—the convenience of having
audio, power and control over just
a single CAT cable is a huge advantage
for integrators,” says Leissner. “We also
appreciated the Smart IP Manager software
which made device discovery and
configuration easy and straightforward,
and provides status monitoring so we
know how the system is performing at all
times. So, for us, combining 4000 and
Smart IP series models across the project
produced the ideal balance of costeffectiveness
and networked flexibility.”
Indeed, before the project started, the
Informationsteknik team visualised each
component in D-Tools design and documentation
software. “We simulated
the sound digitally for all rooms and
surfaces in the hotel,” notes Leissner.
“The results guided our choices of models,
colour and how many of each were
required to create really good sound
quality in every corner of the hotel.”
Jacy'z Hotel & Resort
67
In terms of networking and control,
Informationsteknik supplied a Biamp
Tesira server with both Dante and AVB
support that handles all of the audio traffic,
fully stocked with expansion cards.
There are nine central music players with
customised soundtracks to fit different
themed areas which can be routed to
any of the audio zones. A scheduling
program runs in the background that
adjusts volume and makes sure the correct
source is playing in every zone.
the entire group. This allowed us to reach
the finish line on time, within budget and
with the quality we want to deliver.”
This high level of coordination proved
critical for a project like Jacy’z where
every detail mattered. “ESS Group really
wanted to maximise EVERYTHING,” says
Bezgin. “Their vision for appearance and
function guided decisions in every detail.
They are meticulous and have a great eye
for what works in colour and form. It has
been inspiring to be part of the journey!”
Each venue throughout the hotel has
its own DJ-panel (XLR-to-Dante wall
plate) so staff can change the source
from the music player to these panels
as required. The beauty of centralised
audio routing is that there can
be a DJ playing in the penthouse spa,
but you can listen in from anywhere.
Joakim Leissner agrees. “Jacy’z is a truly
fantastic meeting place and destination.
And it is the attention to detail that makes
it extraordinary. We’re proud of what we
have achieved here and look forward to
rolling out the same AV technological blueprint
for ESS Group hotels everywhere.”
Informationsteknik’s Hakan Bezgin was
the project manager for Jacy’z. He recalls
that with over 3000 products in total, it
was a complex project to manage and
coordinate with the other contractors
involved. “We were responsible for the
project management of the AV equipment.
At the same time, AV is so integrated into
the construction process that the coordination
with the other subcontractors
in construction, electricity, network and
operation is absolutely crucial. Therefore,

A fusion of Scandinavian design and Smart IP
loudspeaker technology delivers an unforgettable
guest experience at iconic Vesterbro hotel
Featured in Vogue, ELLE, and Time
Out, Grand Joanne Hotel is a stunning
tribute to Scandinavian design,
just a short walk from Copenhagen’s
Tivoli Gardens. Reopened in 2023 with
a fresh vision from hospitality specialists
Midstar AB, the hotel blends heritage,
lifestyle, fashion, and design
within a beautifully restored 19th-century
building. At the heart of its new
chapter is a state-of-the-art Smart IP
audio solution from Genelec that delivers
bespoke sound to every corner.
Consultancy and integration firm,
Effektgruppen was tasked with bringing
yet another ambitious vision to life for
Midstar. The brief was for ‘uncompromised
sound quality with a sleek design’ and with
the renovation complete, Grand Joanne
offers guests a unique experience where
food, drink, music, and culture converge.
“We always begin by understanding the
client’s expectations for both the aesthetics
and functionality of the sound
system,” explains Fredrik Nordström,
project manager at Effektgruppen.
“Initially, we designed custom loudspeakers
that blended with the décor,
but it quickly became clear that while
they looked great, the sound quality
wasn’t up to par. Pristine audio was
a top priority for the hotel, so we
decided to switch to Genelec. With
their Smart IP networked loudspeaker
technology, we knew we’d achieve premium
sound that still looked great.”
The comprehensive Smart IP system comprises
26 of the compact 4420 loudspeakers,
29 of the slightly larger 4430 models,
plus seven 7050 studio subwoofers. These
are strategically placed in all public areas,

including the lobby, restaurant, bar and
gym. “Music is central to the ambience at
Grand Joanne, and it’s reflected in every
aspect of the hotel,” continues Nordström.
“Known for their unparalleled quality and
innovation, each Smart IP loudspeaker
operates on the network as an independent
unit, allowing us to tailor the sound
in each environment with precision. This
ensures that every space in the hotel
benefits from the highest quality sound.”
Located in the lively Vesterbro district
and surrounded by a vibrant community
of bars, restaurants, and boutique stores,
Grand Joanne reflects Copenhagen’s
renowned creative, laid-back culture.
The hotel’s 162 rooms, spread across
six floors, feature a blend of Art Deco
influences and Scandinavian simplicity.
The hotel is also home to Joanne’s—
a popular restaurant serving modern
Italian dishes from breakfast through
dinner—and a rooftop bar on the sixth
floor, where guests can enjoy cocktails
and light bites with views over the city.
A yoga studio, gym, and several meeting
rooms also benefit from Genelec’s
advanced Smart IP audio systems. “In

the lobby, we installed 11 Genelec 4420
Smart IP loudspeakers paired with two
7050 studio subwoofers. This creates an
enveloping sound experience as soon as
guests step inside, setting the tone for
their stay,” says Nordström. “This same
attention to audio quality extends to the
bar and restaurant. Joanne’s features
eight 4430 loudspeakers and one 7050
subwoofer, providing background music
for daily service or live events, while the
adjacent bar is equipped with seven more
4430s plus another 7050 subwoofer,
for a seamless auditory experience.
“The whole system is built on a Dante
network with sound distribution run via
a DSP from BSS. To fully optimise the
sound experience, we used Genelec’s
Smart IP Manager software to individually
calibrate and tweak the delay and EQ of
every loudspeaker. It’s an excellent tool
and yet another benefit of using Smart IP.
Grand Joanne Hotel
75
76 Grand Joanne Hotel
“We also created some custom touch
panels at various points so that staff can
easily adjust sound levels. This is particularly
helpful in the gym and yoga studios,
as all AV elements can be modified depending
on the intensity of the class.”
Thanks to Genelec’s next-generation
Smart IP technology, the system is not
only high-performance but also highly
efficient. “Each loudspeaker requires just
a single network cable, which delivers
power, audio and management—and this
greatly simplifies the installation process,”
Nordström adds. “This setup enhances
the hotel’s design by keeping things sleek
and minimal whilst maintaining a perfect
balance between form and function.”
With Genelec’s Smart IP audio solution
at its heart, the hotel delivers a consistent,
high-quality sound that complements
its bespoke interiors. By integrating
state-of-the-art audio technology without
compromising on aesthetics, Grand
Joanne ensures that every detail—from
the décor to the sound—contributes
to an unforgettable stay.
The transformation of Grand Joanne is
a testament to how design and technology
can reinvent the guest experience.

HimmerLand implements a Genelec
loudspeaker system that will serve
it for years to come
80 HimmerLand Resort
Set in the rolling hills of the Danish
countryside, HimmerLand is an
idyllic resort combining golf and
spa facilities with award-winning bistros,
a bowling alley, outdoor sporting
activities and flexible meeting spaces.
Known as the place where leisure,
pampering and professionalism meet,
HimmerLand has recently expanded
its facilities to allow guests to get even
more out of their stay. The latest addition
is a large multipurpose hall for conferences,
alongside smaller meeting
rooms, a golf simulator and fitness centre.
Leading the AV design and integration
of HimmerLand’s new expansion was
COMM2IG—a Danish company specialising
in technology solutions—who
opted for a Genelec Smart IP system.
seeing how sleek and beautiful Genelec’s
Smart IP models were, they decided to put
them in full view right next to the screens!”
COMM2IG chose six of Genelec’s 4430
Smart IP loudspeakers in black for the
meeting spaces. “The Smart IP models
were an excellent fit as they offer a local
analogue input in addition to being a
networked IP solution—making them
completely flexible. They can also be
monitored remotely, which is great for
troubleshooting,” says Maibom. The new
Genelec solution was an ideal fit, but just
as COMM2IG were concluding their work
on HimmerLand’s new meeting rooms, the
resort threw the integrators a new brief—
to completely renovate the resort’s existing
bar into the new Larsens Sportsbar &
Bistro in a timeframe of just five-months.
“We have been involved with Himmer-
Land’s new building from the very
beginning,” explains Søren Maibom,
solution manager and sound designer at
COMM2IG. “We decided on a combination
of Sony screens and Genelec loudspeakers
for the smaller meeting rooms. Firstly,
their off-axis dispersion is excellent, which
is very helpful for meeting rooms and secondly,
HimmerLand wanted a very Nordic
design for these spaces, and Genelec’s
form factor works really well in this context.
In fact, the team wanted to hide
the loudspeaker system initially, but after
Following the success of the Smart IP
solution in the meeting rooms, Maibom
and his team once again looked to the
brand for help with Larsens. “We decided
on another Smart IP solution—comprising
a combination of 22 of the 4420 and 4430
models—mainly because of the tight timeframe
we were working to,” he explains.
“The on-site electricians did all the network
cabling for us so that we didn’t
have to come back and do any analogue
wiring. Also, the models are incredibly
easy to set up and use, and the Smart IP
Manager software is a game changer.”
HimmerLand Resort
81
82 HimmerLand Resort
The models are easy to set up and use, and the Smart IP
Manager software is a game changer.
Genelec’s Smart IP Manager seamlessly
solves installation-specific audio problems.
The software tools can handle room
equalisation, system organisation, status
monitoring and more, saving integrators
large amounts of time in configuration
and calibration, and ensuring that the
Smart IP system is performing at its very
best—in any acoustic environment.
For HimmerLand, the attraction to Genelec
wasn’t just the superior sound quality of
Smart IP loudspeakers, but the brand’s
commitment to sustainability, too. The
resort is dedicated to preserving the
picturesque countryside it calls home
by reducing its carbon footprint wherever
possible. It has three sustainable
development goals; using sustainable
energy, providing decent work and economic
growth, and being responsible in
its consumption and production. So the
low power consumption of the Smart IP
family—with its efficient Class D amplifier
design and PoE compatibility—aligned
completely with HimmerLand’s values.
“The facility manager didn’t believe me
when I told him that the power consumption
for the whole system was just 120 W!
He thought that was insane,” recalls
Maibom. “When all 22 loudspeakers in
the sports bar are run at an SPL of 75 dB,
they draw around 5.2 W each, which
is amazing and largely unheard of.
“This is why Smart IP was a great fit
for HimmerLand. The loudspeakers are
good looking and extremely powerful,
as well as being sustainable. They use
recycled aluminium, run off a single CAT
cable, have low power consumption, and
the fact that they use efficient Class D
onboard amplification means that they
don’t produce much heat, which reduces
the load on the resort’s air conditioning.”
On the ground floor, COMM2IG supplied
a Smart IP solution across the entrance
hall, bar area, seating area and a VIP
space for private parties. On the first
floor, the volume is louder as it caters
for a more typical sports bar/nightclub

vibe, so most of the loudspeakers were
installed there, alongside four screens that
show regular sports content. Additionally,
there is a children’s playroom with interactive
projection, where a set of Smart
IP models are installed, too. AMX is used
to control the video and a Q-SYS control
system takes care of the audio.
“The feedback from the client has
been exceptional,’ concludes Maibom.
“Everyone is really happy with the system
and how it looks. The loudspeakers
slot well into the design of the
resort—you don’t really notice them.
The sound is amazing and, most importantly,
sustainable. We know that the
new system will serve HimmerLand
well—for many years to come.”

the Nordics, the Helsinki, Tampere, and
Aarhus locations are all equipped with
high quality Genelec sound systems.
“The brief was to create a welcoming
atmosphere with a distinct signature
for the UNITY brand and bring it
to life with high quality audio,” explains
Tina Kaikkonen, General Manager for
UNITY Finland. “We collaborated with
TuneButler—a Copenhagen-based control
manufacturer—to curate playlists for the
entire UNITY group, ensuring a consistent
audio experience across all our locations.”
In Helsinki, an additional requirement
was to establish different audio environments
for the lobby; a multi-purpose area
referred to as the ‘barception.’ Serving
as both a reception and a café-bar with
a lounge, plus an open-plan co-working
space on a half-mezzanine, this area
needed easy audio management to cater
to various moods and times of the day.
“The café-bar plays louder music, especially
during evenings when it transforms
into a bar and event space. However, we
didn’t want the audio spilling over into
the co-working areas, disturbing guests
trying to work. So, we focused on providing
high-quality background music

that sets the right mood without being
intrusive,” explains Kaikkonen. “As for
the reception, we aimed to envelop our
guests in a sound barrier to ensure private
conversations with our team members.”
Additionally, the eighth-floor rooftop bar
and terrace with its stunning Helsinki
views can accommodate DJs for events.
AVconcept, the UNITY AV integrator in
Finland, opted for Genelec Smart IP networked
loudspeaker systems throughout
the lobby ‘barception’—specifically two
4420s and two 4430s. There are also a
pair of 4430s in the gym and four 4430s
plus a 7050 sub in the panoramic rooftop
events space—which is also capable of
hosting a DJ. The flexible meeting rooms
are equipped with Genelec’s ubiquitous
4000 Series loudspeakers for ease and
convenience, with a pair of 4020s in each
space. For UNITY Tampere, AVconcept
chose a 4000 Series solution. The reception
area enjoys four 4020s for ambient
music, while the café/restaurant boasts
eight compact 4010s. The events/function
space is equipped with eight powerful
4040 loudspeakers. AV control at both
locations is managed via Extron over a
Dante network, with local control through
Extron’s AV control panels, offering easy
source selection and level control.

In Aarhus, TuneButler took a more central
role in the project, as CEO Kasper
Hollænder, explains. “In the previous
builds, we supplied our audio-visual
control solution and curated playlists
to suit each environment, but at UNITY
Aarhus we were also responsible for the
entire design and installation of the AV
system. Genelec is a brand that I know
I can rely on for incredible sound and
that’s why we chose them for UNITY.
“Each of the individual spaces demanded
individual specifications, and the system
also had to deliver information and services,”
furthers Hollænder. “With Genelec
you have great sound everywhere. Whether
that’s in the meeting rooms, the home
cinema, or a fitness environment where
the bass is required to be a little punchier,
Genelec’s products deliver without fail.
“Additionally, Genelec’s 4000 series comes
with Euroblock connector terminals. This
makes signal connections 75% faster as
the speakers can be easily daisy-chained
together. The sound and magnitude of
the output compared to the speaker
size is very effective, and they look great
with the minimalist interior of UNITY.”
Three TuneButler MFB Music Players
control both the background music
and multiple NEC screens on the basement
and ground floor, making it easy
to choose the music across the multiple
zones. At the centre of the system
is a Q-SYS Core 8 Flex control processor
that targets the processing requirements
of the yoga studio, reception and
lounge areas via Q-SYS iPads with zone
control. Each of these areas features a
selection of Genelec 4020 loudspeakers
in both black and white finishes.
On the first floor of UNITY Aarhus,
TuneButler installed two black 4020
models in three separate meeting rooms,
alongside three NEC MultiSync E658
screens and three Biamp Impera Uniform
8 control pads, which provide intuitive,
user-friendly interfaces for each presentation
room. Additionally, the library
houses four 4020 loudspeakers in white.
A large events space sits on the 12th
floor, where TuneButler integrated eight
more 4020 loudspeakers, alongside a

Player. “We have combined the control
of digital signage with the same platform
as background music, which makes the
control of all the AV content in a space like
UNITY very easy,” explains Hollænder.
Across the three locations, UNITY’s Tina
Kaikkonen is thrilled with the results:
“Genelec’s world-class Nordic brand aligns
perfectly with UNITY’s values. We believe
that we showcase the best of the Nordics,
from furniture and design to functionality.
Genelec’s sustainability credentials,
company integrity, and commitment to
delivering exceptional service were key
factors in our partnership decision.
“Our AV systems seamlessly blend audio
and video, allowing for easy switching
between DJ setups, corporate AV configurations,
and background mood music,” she
continues. “When we’re showing people
around, we’re always proud to show off
our audio equipment. We’ve had lots of
positive feedback on delivering excellent
sound quality, but also for having chosen
such a well-respected Finnish brand.”

Ubisoft Stockholm elevates game
development with cutting-edge audio
solutions from Genelec
Headquartered in the chic Parisian
suburb of Saint-Mandé, the French
video game publisher, Ubisoft, is
one of the largest in the world. Founded
by the Guillemot family in 1986, today
Ubisoft numbers over 50 subsidiaries
around the world, including two locations
in Sweden—Massive Entertainment
based in Malmö and Ubisoft Stockholm.
Fiercely independent, Ubisoft has thrived
by embracing new ideas and technologies.
Whether that’s by pioneering dynamic
lighting for Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell on
the PlayStation 2, getting players moving
with motion controls in Just Dance, or
building complex systemic open worlds
in Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, and
The Division—the company has always
remained ahead of the curve. Key to
maintaining this drive for innovation is
the quality of the working environment.
When Ubisoft Stockholm recently made
the move to a breathtaking new office
location in Hagastaden, a range of high
performance Genelec loudspeaker systems
were specified for the company’s
game development and leisure spaces.
Having helped find the new premises,
IT and Project Manager at Ubisoft
Sweden, Niklas Domander, engaged
systems integrator and consultant This
Is Who I Am (Tiwia) and systems integrator
Logic IT to assist with acoustics
and the technical installation.
The new office space features a range of
specialised rooms and facilities including
a multipurpose Dolby Atmos room that
can be used for demos, presentations,
screenings and other events. There is

also an Atmos recording studio, a second
5.1 studio, a video editing suite,
plus a splendid central atrium that serves
as a reception and social area capable
of holding company-wide gatherings
and events. Genelec loudspeaker systems
have been installed throughout.
According to Pär Hörnell, CEO at Tiwia,
Genelec was the obvious choice for
this project. “I’ve worked with Genelec
for many years. We had excellent support
from them, including a visit to the
new Experience Centre in Stockholm
where we were able to plan and create
a final proposal for Ubisoft.”
Logic IT was responsible for the installation
in the main atrium reception area plus
the kitchen. Based on Genelec’s 4000
Series installation loudspeakers, the audio
system comprises two compact 4020s,
and six slightly larger and more powerful
4030s that are distributed throughout the
space for an elegant, high quality background
music solution capable of higher
SPLs when required. “4000 Series loudspeakers
are just a no-brainer for this
type of space,” says Logic IT’s André
Wilstrand. “Easy to install and calibrate
to the space (despite lots of glass), they
look good and deliver excellent, reliable
results for years, if not decades to come.”

Logic IT also set up the Dante solution
enabling music playback throughout
this zone via a Yamaha MTX5-D
matrix processor, and connected
Ubisoft’s Teams solution with microphones
to the same loudspeaker
system for the large meeting setup.
The two recording studios were less
straightforward. “The size of the studios
was especially challenging,” admits
Tiwia’s Pär Hörnell. “Achieving suitable
acoustics in such a small space is tricky.
The rooms had already been extensively
treated during the construction phase, but
we ended up having to move the computers
out completely and run USB-C cables
via fibre to make the spaces even quieter.
In these instances, Genelec’s GLM calibration

some low frequency challenges and create
a first-class working environment.”

setup is a powerful 7360 Smart Active
subwoofer. The second studio—every
bit as bijou as the first—has been
equipped as a 5.1 recording/listening
space. Five 8330s are installed as
surrounds, with a compact 7350 subwoofer
handling the low frequencies.
However, the jewel in the crown is the
9.2.4 Atmos multipurpose room complete
with a huge screen. Niklas Domander
explains: “This is a really cool and truly
multifunctional space. Firstly, it’s a
beautiful demo room that allows us to
showcase games under the best possible
conditions—it serves for visiting
journalists and press events, but also
internally for reviews, presentations,
training sessions and more. It also forms
an important part of the workflow for
our audio team, who love using it.”
The main 7.1.4 Atmos studio is equipped
with Genelec Smart Active loudspeakers.

GLM software which Tiwia used to create
a fully optimised immersive listening
environment. Additionally, the room is
connected to the sound studios via a
Focusrite RedNet Dante system. An HDMI
extender in one of the two floor boxes
enables people to hook up their laptops
in the middle of the room and carry
on working, for maximum flexibility.
“Working with audio in this studio is such
a pleasure,” says Istvan Stenberg, Head
of Audio at Ubisoft Stockholm. “Huge
thanks to Niklas and Pär for creating
such a smart, versatile and efficient audio
ecosystem across the studio. It’s really
improved and streamlined our workflow,
from the analysis of reference material in
the audio room, through to recording and
feedback—now much quicker and easier
thanks to the connection of the two studios
via our RedNet Dante system. With
Genelecs in both the Control room and in
the Recording room we can play back the
recorded material to the artists and get
instant feedback that is precise and sonically
correct—which is a huge time saver.
The consistency between
Genelec models helps
maintain cohesion.
“An initial mix in the 7.1.4 room allows us
to see how the mix translates across a
variety of channel formats, hardware and
environments,” continues Stenberg—“And

travel, great acoustics and the Genelec
9.2.4 system. Since all our studios and
speakers are set up using GLM, our
mixes translate seamlessly across different
environments. Additionally, the
consistency between Genelec models
helps maintain cohesion throughout
the entire audio production process.
“We truly enjoy the variety and versatility
of our studio setups—we’re a very
happy sound team!” Domander agrees.
“Overall, it’s been a great experience,”
he concludes. “The tight collaboration
from the outset with both Tiwia and
the construction company enabled
us to create a highly functional and
well-designed office space that makes
coming to the office a top-class experience
for both staff and visitors.”
Pär Hörnell is also proud of what has been
achieved. “It’s incredibly inspiring to work
with a client who has such ambitious and
specific demands concerning performance
and quality. Ubisoft pushed us hard, but
the results speak for themselves.”

106 Berghs School of Communication
The award-winning school equips its new
home with a Genelec Smart IP solution
Established in 1941, Berghs School
of Communication is rated among
the top creative schools across the
globe. Located in Stockholm, Sweden,
the education facility is a world-leader
in communication, offering an advanced
curriculum that covers everything from
brand strategy to content design, illustration,
marketing and art direction.
When Berghs made the move to the newly
developed Gasverket—a former gas plant
that is now home to a growing community
of cultural, educational, and social
enterprises—it needed a flexible audio
solution that could easily deliver sound
to all areas of its new campus. Working
alongside Stockholmbased integrators
Scan AV, Berghs chose a Genelec Smart
IP loudspeaker system for its new venture.
“We moved to a new building and
needed high-quality audio in the open
areas,” begins Bosse Hjerpe, facility
manager at Berghs. “We turned to
Scan AV for a solution that was flexible
and—due to cost reasons—networked.
The building was empty and needed to
be equipped with everything, so a networked
solution was much cheaper than
power outlets and analogue cables.”
Dragan Nedeljkovic, audio integrator at
Scan AV, adds: “I talked to Bosse about
the project and immediately looked to
Genelec’s Smart IP loudspeakers. I’ve
known Genelec for a while and my experience
of working with Smart IP has been
excellent, so I wanted to continue to
implement this technology. I know all the
advantages of a networked solution, so
I asked Berghs to install the initial infrastructure
with lots of network outlets,
which gave us the flexibility to design
the system however we liked. As long
as you have a network outlet available,
Berghs School of Communication

you can place the loudspeakers anywhere
and this was hugely important
for Berghs. Genelec’s build quality and
sound was also a deciding factor.”
Berghs’ new home in the Gasverket is
in a central part of the newly developed
Norra Djurgårdsstaden district, a former
industrial part of Stockholm that is currently
undergoing intensive modernisation.
Aiming to be complete by 2029/30,
the finished project will be home to
restaurants, hotels, concert halls and
more—paying homage to Stockholm’s
forward thinking industrial innovation.
at Gasverket comprises 24 Genelec
4430 Smart IP loudspeakers, alongside
eight of the previously used 4020 models
that were brought over to the new
space to be used as auditorium fills.
The Smart IP loudspeakers are distributed
throughout the building, with a Xilica
FR-1 DSP connected via Dante to the
loudspeakers—giving Berghs full control
over the system. Smart IP models offer
power, audio and loudspeaker management
over just one CAT cable, ticking all
the boxes for Berghs, including cost-effectiveness
and simplicity of installation.
The Berghs project began with a network
that spanned all three storeys of the
building and incorporated a multitude of
outlets, allowing Scan AV to cover the
required areas with ease whilst offering
the flexibility to adapt the sound system
to different events as needed. Berghs is
no stranger to the sonic power of Genelec
loudspeakers, as its previous campus was
powered by over 30 of the brand’s 4020
installation models, which worked flawlessly
for over 10 years. The new system

can be moved freely and easily if needed.
To configure and calibrate the new system,
Scan AV made full use of Genelec’s Smart
IP Manager software, which is key to
addressing the needs of installers. It solves
common and project-specific audio problems
quickly and easily, ensuring that the
Smart IP system performs at its best—with
unmatched clarity and speech intelligibility
even in complex acoustic environments.
“The entire building that Berghs now
inhabits is equipped with integrated networked
AV systems,” furthers Nedeljkovic.
“Audio, video and system control are
all placed on Berghs’ physical network
and supply large meeting and auditorium
functionality to the school’s bigger events.
“Everything is connected on one, easily
accessible PoE+ powered network
that spans four server rooms. This was
key to the brief that we first received
from Berghs. Their system includes a
variety of AVoIP units, mixing consoles,
cameras, projectors, control systems
and Dante audio connections, all living
on one network that easily integrates
with the Smart IP range.”
Berghs School of Communication is no
stranger to what can be achieved with
a Genelec sound system. Incorporating
a Smart IP solution into its new space
at Gasverket means that the school
can continue its goal of educating the
“top communicators of tomorrow”
using sustainable, reliable and powerful
products from Genelec. Berghs’ new
campus is just the beginning of what
can be achieved in this up-and-coming
corner of central Stockholm.

MAAP seamlessly blends sound, cycling
culture, fashion, and brand identity to
redefine experiential retail
Located in the heart of Berlin,
MAAP’s experiential retail space
merges cutting-edge design with
cycling culture. As a premium performance
cycling apparel brand, MAAP is
renowned for seamlessly merging aesthetics
with performance while crafting
physical spaces that embody its brand
ethos. When the Berlin MAAP LaB opened,
sound was recognised as a pivotal element
in shaping the customer experience,
and Genelec loudspeakers have
been integral to the project’s success.
The Berlin MAAP LaB represents a unique
retail philosophy that’s far removed
from transactional spaces—it focuses
on fostering a sense of community.
“Our LaB is a cultural touchpoint for the
cycling community, a space that connects
with Berlin’s dynamic spirit,” says
Matt Ward, MAAP (LaB Amsterdam
Manager). Ward has a long history as
a music professional and led the effort
to transform sound into a core element
of the brand experience, working closely
with Genelec and project integrator
B.I.N.S.S Medientechnik GmbH.
“Sound is not just an accessory; it’s part
of the DNA of the space,” Ward explains.
“We wanted an environment where sound
feels organic and immersive—inviting
customers to dwell and connect with
the cycling culture we represent.”
The sound system required precision and
adaptability. MAAP’s brief called for superior
clarity at low volumes and the ability
to increase the playback levels for events
without compromising on quality. Ward, an
audiophile with years of experience, turned
to Genelec. “I’ve trusted Genelec in my
production work since 2008. Their reputation
for accurate sound reproduction made
them the obvious choice,” he shares.

Sound is not just an accessory; it’s part
of the DNA of the space.
For the Berlin LaB, seven Genelec 4430
Smart IP loudspeakers were selected. The
4430’s network compatibility offered flexible
installation, requiring just a single CAT
cable for audio, power and management.
“The simplicity of installation was a gamechanger,”
says Christoph Schlenther,
sales manager at B.I.N.S.S Medientechnik
GmbH. “Genelec allowed us to effortlessly
integrate exceptional sound into the
sleek, minimalist design of the space.”
Ward continues: “We needed a system
that met our fidelity requirements and was
easy for the LaB team to operate daily. The
Audac NPW320 delivered this, enabling
us to stream content via Bluetooth,
sync with our in-house LED panel for
events, and offering versatile input
options for cultural and music events.”
The MAAP Berlin LaB features an open
layout filled with high-performance cycling
apparel, which naturally absorbs sound.
This allowed B.I.N.S.S Medientechnik
GmbH to forgo additional acoustic treatments.
Instead, they meticulously tuned
the loudspeakers to the space, achieving
balanced sound levels and eliminating
dead zones or harsh hotspots.
“The 4430s deliver remarkable fidelity,”
Schlenther says. “They create an

immersive experience without overwhelming
the listener, which is crucial for retail.
It ensures that customers feel at ease
and encourages them to stay longer.”
Ward agrees: “Genelec’s ability to deliver
high-quality sound at lower volumes is
invaluable. Customers often compliment
us on the music, noting how it blends
smoothly into the store’s atmosphere.”
The soundscapes at the Berlin LaB reflect
both the city’s vibrant electronic music
culture and MAAP’s brand identity—energetic
yet refined. “Our goal was to evoke
the energy of Berlin while staying true to
MAAP’s ethos,” Ward explains. “Sound
influences how customers perceive the
space and, by extension, the brand.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
We’ve had customers tell us that
the sound is what makes the space feel
alive. That’s the ultimate compliment—it
means the system is doing its job.”
The project exemplified the importance of
collaboration. “Working with Genelec and
B.I.N.S.S Medientechnik GmbH was seamless,”
says Ward. “Their expertise ensured
the system not only met but exceeded our
expectations.” Schlenther adds: “From

the planning phase to fine-tuning, the
teamwork was outstanding. The result
is a sound system that complements
the space perfectly, enhancing every
aspect of the customer experience.”
The success of the MAAP Berlin LaB
demonstrates the transformative power
of sound in retail environments. With
Genelec as a partner, MAAP has created
a space that invites customers to
immerse themselves in its world—a place
where cycling culture, sound, and fashion
converge. “Sound has the power to connect
people to a brand on an emotional
level,” Ward concludes. “With Genelec,
we’ve created an experience that resonates—both
literally and figuratively.”

Enhancing the client experience
with premium audio
Through its Smart IP technology,
Genelec, the leader in active loudspeakers
for over 45 years, is
increasingly the choice of loudspeaker
system for retail establishments, commercial
spaces and beyond, especially
among those aiming for a premium experience
for customers. Jesamondo Salon
& Spa in Natick, MA, is just one of those
businesses, recently installing an audio
system that matches up to its gorgeous
decor and ultra-talented staff of over
40 hairstylists, estheticians, nail technicians,
massage therapists, make-up
artists, a reiki master and more.
Jesamondo owner Matt Traiger had a
particular ambiance in mind, and he has
made it happen thanks in part to this
savvy investment in Genelec Smart IP
loudspeakers. Genelec Inc. senior technical
sales manager Paul Stewart is
himself a longtime patron of Jesamondo,
relying on their talented stylists to maintain
his signature coif. Several months
ago, his stylist Marisol mentioned plans
for an upcoming major renovation involving
allnew floors, ceilings, hair stations
and spa rooms, and Stewart brought up
Genelec as an ideal audio choice for such
a makeover. Traiger was open to any great
ideas for the renovation, and it didn’t take
long for the prospect of a Genelec system
to strike the right chord with him.
“I chatted with Paul,” Traiger recalls.
“And then, an hour later, I’m at Genelec
Inc.’s Experience Center in Natick, and
he’s showing me and testing everything.
He just turned on the Genelec speakers,
and it took half a second to tell a distinct
difference from the sound system we had.
The quality of the sound was just like night
and day, and I said, ‘Let’s do this!’.”
Stewart connected Traiger with Zachary
Lacroix, system engineer at frequent
Genelec integrator partner Parsons Audio
(based in Woburn, MA), who was happy to
get the ball rolling. Traiger’s vision included
being able to dial in a festive mood for the

salon’s mimosasipping patrons, matched
with a much more relaxed/tranquil vibe in
the nail room, spas and shampoo room.
The system they arrived at included 22

active in-ceiling speakers, blending seamlessly
into Jesamondo’s chic aesthetic and
being able to serve Jesamondo’s distinct
spaces (two speakers in the reception
area, one in each of two bathrooms off
reception, two in the nail room, seven
in the salon, two in the shampoo room,
one in each of four individual spas, and
one in each for a spa bathroom, the spa
lobby and the hallway outside the spa
rooms). Additionally, onwall dials leveraging
Q-SYS automation systems offer
intuitive zone management, individual
speaker muting, and overall control.
Prior to the renovation, Traiger relied on
a single Pandora feed to populate all the
music for the entire facility, which occasionally
created a dissonance between
the needs for the salon compared to
the more subdued spaces. Now, they
have four different Pandora feeds, fully
routable to any room, to make sure that
each space can dial in just the right vibe.
Lacroix remarks, “The benefit you get with
using an IP system is that each speaker
is individually addressable. So, you can
change the routing…you can change the
grouping down the road if you need to.
It’s not all tied together on one cable.”
Traiger is more than satisfied: “There
was nothing that wasn’t done to perfection.
Walking into here now is the
same as walking into that five-star hotel
spa retreat…that five-star hotel salon
retreat. That’s what we’ve created here.
And it wouldn’t have been possible without
the Genelec sound system.”

Genelec sound was essential for fragrance
brand that pursues authenticity
As a large-scale multi-purpose

Azabudai Hills seeks to exist in
harmony with nature, while providing
support for healthy living. In one of its
corners, the treehouse-like Azabudai
Gallery—of Argentinian fragrance brand
FUEGUIA 1833—has the air of a cosy
hidden retreat. Its inviting interior, alive
with pleasant aromas, enchants visitors
with the beautiful sound of eight
Genelec 8320A loudspeakers.
Established in Buenos Aires in 2010
by Argentinian Artist Julian Bedel,
FUEGUIA 1833 combines scientific
research with artistic exploration to create
evocative, sustainable and deeply
personal fragrances. Guided by inspiration
from music, culture, art and
nature, Julian has developed a unique
way to craft scents that stem from
and evoke memorable experiences.
Uraoka, who represents FUEGUIA 1833
Japan, is delighted with the atmosphere
achieved at the site, stating “The
FUEGUIA 1833 Azabudai Hills store is the
company’s third gallery in Japan, following
our Ginza and Roppongi stores.
After discussing with Julian, we created
a gallery unlike any other, with the theme
of a tree house. The result is an extraordinary
space that honours the concept of
appealing to the customer’s five senses.”
In line with that concept, it was necessary
to deploy high-quality equipment capable
of enticing all five senses, not only
presenting enchanting aromas—which
are the core of this brand—but treating
customers to incredibly rich auditory,
visual, taste and touch experiences.
Upon visiting the Azabudai Gallery, the
first thing that grabs your attention is the
beautiful set of perfume bottles neatly
lined up in the tree house. An electric
guitar displayed upon a wooden wall also
stands out and creates an impact with
visitors. Furthermore, the warm, textured
surface of the wood stimulates the sense
of touch. An elegant bar set up in the

this luxurious atmosphere is only complete
with the addition of premium sound.
During installation, Uraoka revelled in the
sound of Genelec loudspeakers. “When
we planned the Azabudai Gallery, the
first instruction Julian gave us was to
install Genelec loudspeakers. He uses
them in his home studio in Italy, as he
needs to trust what he hears as a musician.
Before the installation, I was able to
listen to Genelecs, and I was surprised
at the high quality of the loudspeakers,
especially in terms of their accurate
sound reproduction. Another important
instruction from Julian was to calibrate
the loudspeakers for the store.”
Indeed, for the finest sound quality, system
calibration should always be performed
after the physical installation of the loudspeakers.
Using Genelec Loudspeaker
Manager (GLM) calibration software,
the eight 8320A Smart Active Monitoring
(SAM) loudspeakers in the store were
adjusted to playback in a way optimised
to the unique characteristics of the tree
house environment. The result ensures that
balanced sound fills every part of the store
without interfering with customers’ conversations,
exquisitely delivering Julian’s
carefully curated playlist of blues, jazz and
classical. At FUEGUIA 1833, fragrances
are created to feel utterly real—in total
synergy with living experiences—and that
perfectly aligns with the true-to-life sound
reproduction of Genelec loudspeakers.
Summarising the impact of the gallery’s
Genelec installation, Uraoka adds that,
“Having our choice of sound reproduced
by Genelec loudspeakers is very
important. I think that by allowing customers
to experience the “essence”
of the sound, it stimulates not only
their sense of hearing but also their
sense of smell, and other senses.

French-inspired cuisine in an listed
building benefits from a sophisticated
Genelec sound system
When dining at a Michelin Guide
restaurant, the focus isn’t usually
on the audio—more often
everyone’s eyes are focused on intricate
plates of well-crafted food. However, Villa
Heftye—a laid-back bistro in the heart of
Oslo—recently took the focus away from
revamping its ever-changing seasonal
menu to renovate its listed restaurant with
a custom Genelec sound system. Known
for its classic dishes, well-stocked wine
cellar and enigmatic décor, the space now
sounds just as good as the food tastes.
Villa Heftye began life as a bank back in
1864. Commissioned by Jorgen Haslev
Heftye and designed by Norwegian
architect Georg Andreas Bull, it was
bought in 2018 by local investor Runar
Vatne for NOK 80 million. In 2021 the villa
became restaurant Villa Heftye, an elegant
yet casual bistro with an emphasis on
French-inspired cuisine that uses seasonal
Nordic ingredients. “The brief was to build
an audio system with the best possible
sound,” began Henning Dyngvold,
founder of Appletify who installed the new
Genelec system. “The loudspeakers had
to look good and complement the design
of the restaurant, which meant that the
physical size was very important, too. The
restaurant is located in a listed building
and is also in the Michelin Guide, so the
system that we installed had to maintain
this high quality. It had to be Genelec.”
Villa Heftye is an exquisite place to wine
and dine. You’ll find signature dishes
like snow crab with edible sand or celeriac
and apple tartar with lemon gel.
There’s also Ribeye with sweet potato
and pumpkin purée and a cheese platter
finisher. It was imperative that this
level of creativity was replicated in the
restaurant’s new Genelec install.
The system comprises 16 Genelec 4020
installation loudspeakers, along with
eight of the larger 4030 models, two
powerful 4040 models and two AIW26

active in-wall loudspeakers. This was
the combination needed to ensure Villa
Heftye could accommodate live performances,
while also offering an ambient
background soundtrack for diners.
“The 4020s were chosen for their compact
size and the 4030s and 4040s
for their powerful performance at a
high event volume. All of this together
has given Villa Heftye a crystal-clear
audio atmosphere,” said Dyngvold.
Genelec’s 4000 series offers premium
performance, a choice of 120 RAL colours
and round-the-clock reliability. The
4020 is compact and can squeeze into
any installation, whereas the 4030 is the
natural choice for small to medium-sized
commercial installations. The largest of
the family, the 4040 is designed for environments
which require higher playback
levels—and the use of all three models
at Villa Heftye has resulted in an uncompromised
and atmospheric soundscape.
136 Villa Heftye Bistro
“The venue is a listed building, so we
had to take extra care where we were
physically placing the loudspeakers,”
said Dyngvold. “The 4000 series was the
perfect choice because the loudspeakers
are available in different sizes and custom
colours—and there is also a wide
range of mounting accessories—which
meant we could place them discreetly
in the restaurant, without affecting the
overall sound. As they’re active designs,
they’re also incredibly easy to look after
and control. You don’t have to find room
for external amplifiers, which is especially
important in a listed building like
Villa Heftye where aesthetics are important
and space is at a premium.”
Villa Heftye is split into four main rooms.
The first three are each equipped with
four 4020s and the fourth has four 4030s
plus two AIW26 in-wall loudspeakers.
Control comes from an Allen and Heath
AHM 64 mixing console. “Villa Heftye
wanted a sound that felt relaxing for
their customers,” explained Dyngvold.
“The AIW26 active in-wall speakers
are used together with the 4030s
when there is an artist playing live.
“This combination creates a much clearer
and more direct sound. Now, the restaurant
leaves the in-wall loudspeakers
on all of the time because it gives the
background music a warm feeling and
Villa Heftye Bistro

improves directivity, making the sound
more precise—both at low volume and at
event level.” The walls of Villa Heftye were
also covered in a red fabric to improve the
sound and style of the system and add
to the restaurant’s aesthetics. The fabric
reduces the sound reflections in the room,
resulting in a smooth, ambient atmosphere
in which the music is clear without
overpowering dinner table conversation.
Dyngvold concluded: “It sounds amazing
and it’s all thanks to Genelec’s excellent
product range. We were able to
meet the client’s needs thanks to the
quality and versatility of the brand. The
restaurant has some of the most talented
local chefs, and now its Nordic
neighbour Genelec has added to the
quality that people have come to expect
from the Michelin Guide bistro.”

The audio system had to match the high quality of
a Michelin Guide venue. It had to be Genelec.

Chin Chin wine bar breaks new ground
with over 800 wines and a stunning
Genelec Smart IP system
142 Chin Chin Wine Bar
Chin Chin wine bar in Tallinn,
Estonia offers guests the blissful
pairing of a crisp glass of wine
with a stunning sea view. A solo project
of sommelier Karl-Märten Käesel, the
bar is a sophisticated space to sip, swirl
and pour as your troubles melt away into
one of 800 glasses of vino on the menu.
To complement the encyclopaedic wine
list and accompanying menu of handselected
gourmet snacks, Chin Chin adds
to the atmosphere with a discreet yet
powerful audio solution from Genelec.
Estonian audio-visual integrators Progear
OÜ designed, supplied and installed the
system, with the help of local distributor
msonic Baltic. The solution comprises
10 Genelec 4430 Smart IP loudspeakers
that met Chin Chin’s brief of a unique,
multifunctional, good-looking and superior
sound system. This milestone project
marked the very first time that a Genelec
Smart IP solution has touched ground in
Estonia, so this was a particularly special
installation for Progear, msonic Baltic and
the Finnish loudspeaker manufacturer.
“Genelec were selected because of their
legendary status, and because they offer
built-in DSP and Dante compatibility,”
begins Karl-Erik Sepp, sound installation
project manager at Progear. “The
4430 uses one network cable, through
which it receives power, audio and
the possibility to control each speaker
remotely. The ease of use was an important
factor for the team at Chin Chin.
The 4430 also offers the famous Genelec
sound quality, which can easily adapt
to everything from relaxed wine tastings
through to the curated DJ nights
that Chin Chin hosts at the weekend.”
One of the biggest wine bars in Tallinn,
Chin Chin offers guests a 26-page wine
list featuring bold reds from Italy and
Spain, to a range of sparkling wines and
lighter options for warmer days. Guests
can either enjoy a glass at the bar or
take home a bottle to enjoy—which
could prove impossible with so many to
choose from! Additionally, there’s also
the option for guests to pour their own
glass at the futuristic wine dispenser,
where a selection of more expensive wines
can be sampled in smaller measures.
As well as serving as a place to wind down
after work and let loose on the weekends,
Chin Chin also hosts wine classes, which
range from a tour around the Italian coast
via specially selected bottles, to wine
and food pairings and a sparkling wine
course taking drinkers from Prosecco to
Champagne. These classes take place
in a separated area of the bar that can
also be hired out for small meetings and
events. This space can be separated
from the rest of the sound system, in

order for classes to be carried out uninterrupted.
“In the small events space
we installed two 4430 loudspeakers, as
well as a Barco ClickShare CX-30 wireless
image transfer device to make the
wireless transfer of pictures and sound
as seamless as possible. The remaining
loudspeakers form a distributed audio
system across the bar and seating areas
to provide consistent, even coverage
throughout the venue,” explains Sepp.
“In addition to the loudspeakers, at the
heart of the system there is also a Yamaha
MTX5-D processor, which controls the
entire audio solution. Access to simple
functionality is provided through wall
panels and automation. To handle speech
requirements there’s a Shure BLX24RE/
SM58 wireless vocal microphone that
automatically turns off the background
music when in use and restores it after
the mic is finished with—the same automation
was also created for the DJ input
via the Yamaha mixing desk, which is
also connected to the Dante network.
“This gives Chin Chin the opportunity
to place the performer almost anywhere
in the venue where a network connection
has been established, which gives
them complete versatility. We built the
audio solution around the mixing desk,
Dante converter and cable rack so that
all the necessary components would be
together in one place and could be stored
neatly out of sight when not in use.”
While it may be modest in size, Chin
Chin is a glimpse into wine bars of the
future, with wine dispensers, expert
sommeliers and an impressive Genelec
sound system that adapts to a variety of
events. Born out of a love for great wine,
Chin Chin now offers even more than
a glass or two of your favourite tipple,
with high-quality, versatile sound from
Genelec’s unrivalled Smart IP series.

La Cosso delivers a relaxing soundscape
with Genelec 4000 series loudspeakers
Connected to the largest freshwater
lake in Japan, Karahashi Deck is
a multifunctional facility offering
water sports, corporate training, education,
and a glass-enclosed restaurant with
a stunning view. Sitting on the banks of
the Seta River, the new venue is operated
by Biwako Rowing Club—an organisation
that offers rowing classes to children
with disabilities. The newly opened picturesque
café and restaurant, La Cosso,
offers a naturally serene environment,
which is complemented by six 4020
installation loudspeakers from Genelec.
Alongside its water sports lessons and
educational seminars, Karahashi Deck
aims to provide employment support for
people with disabilities, through work in
the café, boat repairs and additional roles
across the site. Genelec helped to provide
a relaxing environment where people with
and without disabilities can interact without
boundaries. “La Cosso was designed
to offer a space with a natural atmosphere
so that everyone who visits automatically
feels at ease,” begins Shuichi
Sakata, manager of Biwako Rowing Club.
“Sound within the space was an important
factor in helping customers relax.
“Cafés are—of course—about eating, but
I also think there’s an element of enjoying
the space and time you spend there. I
think music plays a huge part in that. The
music and the quality of the sound make
a big difference to the atmosphere and
the impression it leaves on our customers.
We are very grateful that Genelec helped
us to create a space like La Cosso.”
Biwako Rowing Club worked alongside
Neighbor Food—who were the project
consultants—on the design and

implementation of the sound system inside
La Cosso. It was Neighbor who suggested
using Genelec, and the size, sound and
design instantly impressed staff members.
The loudspeakers are responsible for
music distribution in the café, and they’re
simple enough to operate so that staff can
manage the audio system with ease. The
music source is typically a smartphone
or tablet, connected via Bluetooth to a
PreSonus StudioLive AR8c mixer. However,
if a customer decides to bring in a Mac
or PC for special events, a PreSonus
AudioBox GO USB interface is then
inserted between the computer and mixer.
“When I arrive in the morning, all I have
to do is turn on the output device and
start playing,” adds Sakata. “Genelec’s
loudspeakers have built-in amplifiers, as
well as Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS)
technology that automatically turns
on the power when music is played,
so the products are really convenient.
150 La Cosso Café & Restaurant
The Genelec raw aluminium finish was chosen
to match the natural feel of the café.
Even when you go home after work
for the day, the power will automatically
turn off after a certain period.’’
The interior design of La Cosso was just
as important as the sound. Located so
close to Lake Biwa, the design reflects its
natural surroundings with a wood grain
finish that harmonises with the lake in
front of it—highlighted by large windows
looking out over the water. Genelec loudspeakers
in RAW aluminium finish were
chosen to match the natural feel of the
café, as Sakata explains: “The texture
of recycled aluminium enclosures with a
RAW finish was the best choice. When we
installed the loudspeakers, the staff were
surprised at how well they matched the
interiors. I heard that Genelec values the
natural environment, which makes them
highly compatible with venues like ours
where we encounter nature every day.”
Karahashi Deck’s La Cosso restaurant
brings together the natural beauty of
Japan. Not only does it sit alongside one
of the most stunning freshwater lakes
in the country, but it also showcases
the best in humanity, offering permanent
work for people with disabilities.
Genelec’s 4020 installation loudspeakers
offer a relaxing soundscape that ensures
La Cosso can continue its mission by
providing a space in which everyone
can learn and work comfortably.

Genelec provides sophisticated Smart IP
audio solution for the elegant members-only
Long Room at Lord’s
Widely known as the Home of
Cricket, Lord’s Cricket Ground
in London is a 31,000-capacity
sports destination that’s played host to
some of history’s most iconic cricket
matches over the past 200 years.
Since 2006, the venue has been in the
capable hands of RH Consulting and
RG Jones who have provided Lord’s
with bespoke audio solutions for its
packed cricket and events programme.
This time around, all the action was off
the pitch with a sophisticated Genelec
sound system—supplied by Audiologic
—delivering pristine audio to Lord’s prestigious
members-only Long Room.
The Long Room, once referred to as “the
most evocative four walls in cricket”, is
known worldwide for its opulence. It sits
as part of the Grade II listed Pavilion with
portraits of notable figures from across
cricket’s history hanging on its walls,
creating a backdrop for the elegant dinners,
lunches and wedding receptions that
are frequently held there. For 130 years
The Long Room has been an important
part of Lord’s. On match days, it welcomes
members to their favourite sport,
whilst also providing the walkway for
players coming down from their dressing
rooms and out onto the pitch. Many
cricket greats have passed through, from
W.G. Grace to Sir Alastair Cook, before
gracing the turf at the Home of Cricket.
The brief was for a new, enhanced entertainmentsystem
that could accommodate
the varying events held in The Long
Room. The space can quickly go from
hosting grand lunches and dinners to jazz
performances, small conferences and
speeches. RH Consulting and RG Jones

continued their partnership at Lord’s
by designing and installing a system to
keep up with these diverse demands.
“Spending a day in The Long Room is
a cricket fan’s dream,” began Roland
Hemming, project manager at RH
Consulting. “Therefore, we needed a
first-class solution that wasn’t going to
compromise on quality, which led us
to Genelec. We’d been talking about
this project for years, so there was a
lengthy design process, mainly because
it’s such an iconic space. Prior to the
Genelec system, Lord’s was using a
combination of in-house and temporary
systems, which was very disruptive.”
“The Pavilion at Lord’s is a listed building
so aesthetics were very important
and we were also restricted on
where we physically positioned the
loudspeakers,” furthered Richard
Northwood, design consultant at RH
Consulting. “It’s a really busy room, so
the audio solution we installed had to
ensure everyone could be heard.”
Primarily, Lord’s wanted an entertainment
system for The Long Room that
was able to play high-quality music, but
it also had to serve as part of the evacuation
system. The system includes
redundancy so that should part of the
system fail, the rest carries on. This led
RH Consulting to Genelec’s Smart IP
loudspeakers, which are driven individually
—offering a high degree of redundancy.
The system uses 12 Genelec 4430A Smart
IP models in a custom RAL9001 cream
colour. Known for their exceptional sound
quality and networked convenience, the
4430A uses PoE to deliver uncompromised
SPL and acoustic performance and
is fully compatible with both Dante and
open streaming standards such as AES67.
“The Genelec Smart IP loudspeakers
are sustainably made, flexible and can
be customised in a wide range of colours,”
commented Hemming. “Another
advantage of using this series is that
the loudspeakers are run and controlled
on a single CAT cable. We were able to
156 Lord's Long Room
Lord's Long Room
157
cable the system from the basement,
which meant that there was little disruption
caused by chasing cables through
the walls. This saved on time and money,
and meant that we didn’t have to make
any physical changes to the venue.”
The loudspeakers are controlled by
Genelec’s Smart IP Manager software.
This targets specific audio installation
problems, including room equalisation, status
monitoring and more, saving installation
teams time as it ensures that all of the
loudspeakers are performing at their very
best—even in challenging environments.
RG Jones also installed six 7040A active
subwoofers. The Lord’s Estates’ department
extended the room’s radiator covers
so that these are invisible. The sub’s
onboard bass management technology
enables it to filter low-frequency information
from the main channels and take
responsibility for handling it. Additionally,
room compensation controls also allow
users to optimise the 7040A for any
environment. All of this was connected
into the existing site-wide DSP network.
“One of the main problems of the old
system was that if you were using more
158 Lord's Long Room
than one mic it would go into feedback
very quickly,” explained Hemming. “Now,
the loudspeakers that are closer to the
microphones can be individually controlled,
avoiding any potential feedback.
This is down to the control that only a
self-powered IP solution can give you.”
At its most basic, the new system can be
controlled via a touchscreen on the wall,
but The Long Room is also equipped with
a couple of mobile mixing consoles that
can be plugged in when necessary, so that
a full mix can be created by an engineer
if needed. This gives the room the flexibility
required for bigger events including
parties and weddings, which are becoming
more and more popular at Lord’s.
action. “Genelec are a reliable brand with
an excellent track record. The sound in
The Long Room has gone from being an
afterthought, to one of the stand-out
features of the Pavilion,” concluded
Northwood. For 130 years, the room has
been graced with some of the sport’s
biggest stars, and now Genelec becomes
part of that legacy—delivering a bespoke
audio solution to a sporting venue that’s
high on the list of any avid cricket fan.
The new audio system at The Long Room

Two cave systems deploy Genelec 4420
Smart IP loudspeakers to bring their virtual
reality classroom to life
162 DAF Technology Lab
Long days of monotonous desk work
are in the past—at Tilburg University
at least—as the Netherlands campus,
which specialises in artificial intelligence,
social and behavioural sciences,
recently upgraded its DAF Technology Lab
to revolutionise the way its students learn
and collaborate. Expanding the possibilities
of immersive education and innovative
research, two cutting-edge CAVE
(Cave Automatic Virtual Environment)
systems with VR opportunities and 360º
sound from Genelec now call Tilburg
home. In a project that aims to positively
impact education and training, the Smart
IP series brought high-quality, real-life
audio to a notably complex project.
Max Louwerse, Professor of Cognitive
Psychology and Artificial Intelligence at
Tilburg University—and Founder and
Scientific Director of the DAF Technology
Lab—has been a big advocate of this
new type of immersive learning. In several
publications he explained how a CAVE
system could be pivotal in the teaching of
complex subjects by making them more
engaging, motivating, and effective.
In one of the studies Louwerse and his
team stated: “Results indicated significantly
higher learning gains after collaborative
learning in the CAVE with large effect
sizes compared to a textbook condition.
Furthermore, low spatial ability learners
benefited most from the strong spatial
cues provided by immersive virtual reality,
effectively raising their performance
to that of high spatial ability learners.”
Created in collaboration with integrator/
designer Levtec and AV partner Kinly,
the DAF Technology Lab presents an
all-encompassing VR environment for
researchers and educators. The virtual
classrooms were custom built to give the
same experience as using a VR headset,
with the main difference being that each
of the two CAVE systems are completely
collaborative. Each has four custom
Gerriets screens on which the virtual world
is presented via four Digital Projection
projectors, as well as the state-of-theart
spatial sound system from Genelec.
“If we want good visuals, we have to
consider good audio,” explains Louwerse.
“We looked at loudspeaker companies
across the world, and Genelec was our
preferred choice. Not only because of
the quality of the equipment, but also
because of something else that we find
important—when we collaborate with
a company there must be mutual trust,
excitement, and enthusiasm about the
project. That’s why we chose Genelec,
and they have not disappointed us. On
the contrary, we have been extremely
happy with the speaker systems in both
CAVEs, as well as with the collaboration.”
DAF Technology Lab
163
The CAVEs each have a system that
comprises 42 Genelec 4420 Smart IP
active networked loudspeakers and two
Genelec 7360 Smart Active subwoofers.
Each CAVE is a mere five sq-metres in
size, so some of the loudspeakers are
on the ground, others are at ear height
and 10 are placed above the CAVE
with an additional four clustered in the
middle of the room. The quantity was
decided using the Thompson model
equation, which calculates how many
loudspeakers are needed to ensure that
there is minimum space around them.
“Our goal was to create a sound system
that was indistinguishable from standing
in a real-life environment,” furthers
sound designer Marijn Cinjee. “We
wanted a system that would allow for
sound objects to be moved with high
precision in a virtual reality 360º world.”
The team developed a panning algorithm
that took data from the loudspeakers
to recreate phantom images.

immersion, as it can follow a maximum
of 12 people at once in the CAVE by
tracking bodily and facial movements.
DAF Technology Lab is also a very modern
space, so we couldn’t resist the temptation
of going with a modern audio solution.”
“The main purpose of this project was
realism, and also for the human voice in
the simulated environment. The Smart
IP series turned out to be cost effective
because you don’t need all the other
infrastructure, such as extra cabling and
additional amplifiers—the power, audio
and loudspeaker management all run off
a single CAT cable,” explains Cinjee. “The
Additionally, the spatial system is run
on a Digigram audio card that sends
signals to all 42 channels and uses an
AES67 network to access the Smart
IP loudspeakers. This is run through a
QSC audio processor which handles all
of the channels and makes sure that
the latency is consistent, and all software
is aligned. Furthermore, the CAVEs

use Ableton software to address the
channels and move the sound in 3D.
“Each speaker is equally spaced—and
therefore perfectly calibrated,” continues
Maarten Horden, who designed
and developed the DAF Technology Lab.
“When you walk around the space you
will experience a different way of listening
depending on where you are standing,
but it is always the most optimal
sound. This is all thanks to Genelec.”
One of the main challenges with the
DAF Technology Lab was that the two
CAVEs weren’t big enough for back
projection, but this became a positive
when it came to installing the loudspeakers.
“We designed the CAVE ‘inside out’
with front projection, which gave us
the advantage of placing the speakers
behind the screen,” explains Horden. “If
you had back projection, the audio system
would have created shadowing.”
Tilburg’s DAF Technology Lab CAVE systems
have presented the university and
its affiliated partners with a new age of
both technology and teaching. The system
utilises high-quality, immersive technology
to positively impact the way students
respond to complex information, and
166 DAF Technology Lab
Genelec has again played a key part in
what looks to be a pivotal project for future
collaboration both on and off campus.
“Whereas most CAVE and VR environments
focus on impressive immersive
visual aspects in simulations, the DAF
Technology Lab combines an impressive
360 degrees immersive visual simulated
environment with a cutting-edge immersive
audio environment,” notes Louwerse in
conclusion. “The Genelec system has provided
us with unprecedented opportunities
to have groups of users interact with learning
content and collaborate in an extremely

Prestigious Stockholm music school benefits
from sophisticated Genelec Smart IP solution
for new concert hall
When the directors of Stockholm’s
prestigious music
school, Lilla Akademien, set
about building a new concert hall on its
existing campus, their mission was to
create a highly flexible venue, serving as
a small performance space for professional
live music concerts, a rehearsal
room for the music school’s students and
an inspiring setting for creative learning.
Lilla Akademien’s Artistic Advisor, Mark
Tatlow explains: “We wanted to give
students—and everyone who performs
in the Hall—somewhere to truly immerse
themselves in their instrument. For that,
we needed a sound system that would
work for live classical music performed
acoustically, as well as for electroacoustic
music and live-streamed concerts.”
Work on the project began in 2020 and
was completed and inaugurated in 2022,
by Sweden’s reigning monarch herself,
also a patron of the music school. The
result is a stunning auditorium, unlike
any other: a harmonious blend of architecture,
technology and lighting—with a
world-class sound system from Genelec.
Unlike a modern, purpose-built concert
venue, the Hall is hardly visible from the
outside, hidden behind the austere redbrick
facade of a 19th-century former
orphanage, one of the many historic buildings
lining the streets of Vasastan, on
the edge of Stockholm’s historic centre.
Having identified the most suitable
building on campus, one which could
maximise the potential for design and
functionality, Italian architect Giorgio
Palù set the bar high for the Hall’s
design aesthetics and left the venue’s
acoustics in the capable hands of
Japanese acoustician, Yasuhisa Toyota,
an established international authority
in the field of Concert Hall design.
The unusual layout of the Hall required
close collaboration from a team of international
professionals across a range of
disciplines, including leading Swedish
integrators Informationsteknik.
Marcus Haraldsson Boij, Technical
Director of the Informationsteknik team
explains the challenges: “Despite the relatively
small 300 seat capacity, this is one

of the most complex projects I have been
involved in. The combination of a centrally
located stage, the long reverberation time
of acoustic classical music—and a design
requirement to minimise the number of visible
loudspeakers—made it very interesting
from an acoustic design point of view!”
Boij, an experienced musician with a
background in sound engineering, understood
all too well the constraints of the
building’s cavernous architecture and
set about sourcing a flexible sound system
that could work just as well for
acoustic and non-acoustic music.
“We needed to distribute high-quality
sound close to the audience without it
playing louder than the reverb. Without a
traditional ‘left/right’ stage and with the
audience seated at three different levels
surrounding the orchestra, it demanded
a different way of thinking—and while I
wanted more speakers, it simply wasn’t
possible given the design of the Hall.”
To limit the amount of sound bouncing
around the room, it was important to
reduce the volume from the loudspeakers
and Genelec’s Smart IP range of networked
models, with their outstanding

audio performance and excellent nearfield
clarity, was an obvious choice: “By
positioning them around the space” Boij
continues, “we avoided using a traditional
line array system, which would have been
too obtrusive in this setting. Instead,
we created a unique distributed sound
system which utilised the volume of the
entire Hall while still giving the audience
a sound that felt both rich and intimate.”
the 14-metre high room are finished in
the same varnish as ‘Cremona’ violins—
but it was the wooden ribs of this unique
wall construction which posed an issue.
With a design brief that clearly prohibited
too many visible loudspeakers,
could the cabling and amplifiers be hidden
within the sumptuous gold fittings
and honey-coloured pine cladding?
The Hall is built to the highest environmental
standards with an unparalleled
attention to detail; the pine-clad walls of

of tomorrow. Not only did the active
design of Genelec loudspeakers eliminate
the need for external amplifiers,
but providing multichannel sound over
the Dante network was an unexpected
bonus for the school’s students:

twenty-two Smart IP 4420 models and
four 4430s. Painted in RAL 1036 gold,
the 4430s were the only visible loudspeakers
of the entire installation. Two
pairs were suspended below the first level
balcony, blending harmoniously with the
décor. Additional pairs of the compact
4420s were installed every few metres
across each section of the curved wall
in between the windows, cleverly hidden
in specially insulated recessed boxes.
Tatlow concludes by explaining: “Using a
digital audio workstation, our composition
students can connect to the Hall and
create pieces by combining the live acoustics
of the Concert Hall with electronic
sounds or music. The network allows
discrete control of each loudspeaker to
move sound around the room. The design
of the Hall itself encourages students to
take the next step in their music making
—and the possibilities are huge.”
For Lilla Akademien, it was essential that
the Hall could meet the dual demands of
classical music tradition and the music

Genelec’s advanced loudspeaker
technology delivers superior audio
quality to Konepaja cinema
In the vibrant Konepaja neighbourhood
of just a cinema, the space is an intersection
of film, production, and pristine
sound design coupled with a New York
soul that’s led by Jussi Myllyniemi of
Whitepoint, a Finnish post-production
company. It’s here that Genelec’s audio
expertise plays a key role, transforming
a once-traditional space into a cuttingedge
venue that blends exceptional
sound with the latest on-screen hits.
The intimate, 55-seat venue was conceived
as a production space that
could also serve as a cinema, driven by
Myllyniemi’s background in post-production
and commercial movie events.
“Initially, we considered collaborating
with existing cinemas, but when that
didn’t work out, we decided to create
our own,” he explains. “We’d had this
facility in mind for a while, but we
were met with some structural challenges.
The space had beams that
obstructed some viewpoints, but we
were eventually able to remove these,
enabling us to sign a long-term lease.”
Kino Konepaja’s identity as both a cinema
and a post-production studio demanded
superior audio-visual quality. “We work
extensively with visuals, so we knew exactly
what we needed there,” Myllyniemi
states. “But for sound, we weren’t willing
to compromise—we needed a system
to match the picture quality, so of course
we chose Genelec. We have been using
Genelec’s loudspeakers for years—we
are extremely confident in their sound
accuracy and reliability.”
Genelec’s 7.1 surround system became
the heart of Kino Konepaja’s setup, featuring
three high SPL S360 studio loudspeakers
in the LCR (left-centre-right) positions,
six 8350 studio loudspeakers as surrounds,
and a 7382 subwoofer. Myllyniemi
appreciated the way Genelec’s active
loudspeakers simplified the installation.
“Connection-wise, they’re incredibly easy

to work with. You just need a line-level
signal cable between the processor and
the speakers,” he says, also adding that
the aesthetic of Genelec’s speakers aligns
with Kino Konepaja’s design. “Genelec
speakers are beautiful—they’re meant to
be seen, not hidden away,” he notes.
was an eye-opening process. “As a ‘picture
person’ I had to embrace a whole new
perspective to understand the importance
of sound,” he admits. “The learning curve
involved embracing unfamiliar elements,
like installing over 1000 square meters of
gyprock on the walls for sound insulation.”
The venue’s attention to detail also
extends beyond the main cinema space.
In the bar area, visitors can find a trio
of compact 8020 studio loudspeakers
paired with a 7050 subwoofer—models
that Myllyniemi bought nearly two decades
ago. “Everything else has changed
over the years, but these Genelec models
remain fully functional and still fit right in,”
he reflects. “This long-term durability reinforces
our mission of creating an enduring
space where audio fidelity is paramount.”
Kino Konepaja’s space required extensive
acoustic treatment to meet the
high standards they set for the cinema.
Acoustic designer Kalle Lehtonen of
Promethor—a Finnish acoustic consultancy
business—collaborated on the
project, focusing on sound isolation within
a restricted budget. For Myllyniemi, this
As the project progressed, Genelec’s

Myllyniemi and his team. “Even at
high SPL levels, the detail and clarity
in Genelec’s sound is astonishing. It’s
rewarding to offer an experience where
the audience hears sound exactly as
the creators intended,” he says.
Kino Konepaja caters to an audience that
values high-quality audio-visual technology.
From arthouse screenings to
large-scale productions, the venue now
provides an unparalleled experience in
Helsinki. “Our audience respects quality,
and compromises simply weren’t
an option,” Myllyniemi asserts. In fact,
Kino Konepaja hosts a variety of international
productions, with filmmakers
from around the world visiting to witness
the progress of their projects. “We’re a

micro-sized company, but we made a
substantial investment to ensure we offer
the highest quality,” he says with pride.
As Kino Konepaja continues to evolve,
Myllyniemi remains enthusiastic about
the role Genelec plays in its identity.
Genelec’s active loudspeakers have
proven to be the perfect match for Kino
Konepaja, providing unmatched sound
quality that’s easy to install and manage.
In Myllyniemi’s view, Genelec’s reputation
as a “workhorse” with extraordinary durability
makes them the ideal choice. “The
longevity of these speakers speaks for
itself. Offering a space where people can
hear sound as it was meant to be heard
is incredibly satisfying,” he concludes. “The
Genelec system doesn’t just enhance
our theatre experience—it defines it.”

SANDTON,
SOUTH AFRICA

South African home cinema relies on Genelec
for a sustainable solution
186 Home Cinema Brunnock
Cinema Architects is an
award-winning custom integration
company based in Kramerville,
Sandton, that specializes in the design
and integration of sophisticated electronic
systems for residential environments—
including some of South Africa’s most
beautiful and innovative home cinemas.
‘Cinema Brunnock’ was one such project
which scooped up not one, but two
prestigious awards; the first from Design
et al., a leading UK interior design and
architecture magazine; and the second
from CE Pro, the leading US B2B publication
for custom electronics. As with
all of Cinema Architects’ home cinema
projects, Genelec was the go-to loudspeaker
choice for Cinema Brunnock.
The brief for the project was somewhat
unusual in that the client asked for a bed
to be incorporated in the design at the
front of the cinema. “In fact, the client
is a family with two young children who
enjoy weekend cinema sleepovers,”
recalls Cinema Architects sales & marketing
director, Mauricio Tavares. “That
had an impact on our audio calculations
as we needed to ensure that the ‘sweet
spot’ was focused on the front row where
the bed is located. It’s an unconventional
request, so it was up to us to ensure that
the sound in the rest of the space was not
compromised as a result.” Another challenge
was that the residence is built next
to a dam with high water levels—consequently
a huge amount of waterproofing
had been carried out in the basement
where the cinema is located. “We were
not allowed to drill into the concrete floor,
sidewalls or roof as it would have compromised
the waterproofing treatment,”
explains Tavares. “Our only option was
to build a ‘room-within-a-room’ using
a stand-alone sub frame. However, the
second problem was that the roof was
very low—much lower than the norm—and
that the sub-frame was going to lower it
still further. We spent a lot of time designing
a subframe with the lowest profile
possible, in order to maintain the maximum
amount of height in the room.”
When it came to the sound, Cinema
Architects opted for a 7.1.4 immersive
loudspeaker system comprising three

(left-centre-right), supplemented by four
Genelec AIW25 in-wall surround loudspeakers
and four AIC25 in-ceiling overhead
loudspeakers. A 7370 12-inch
Smart Active subwoofer placed beneath
the screen completed the system.
“We’ve been using Genelec for our home
cinema builds for years,” remarks Tavares.
“Apart from the obvious advantage when
it comes to sound quality, there is also
the benefit of design simplicity using

Genelec. Having built-in amplification is
a huge advantage, especially in areas
where space is at a premium. It’s often
the case in home cinemas, and especially
so in this instance. Not having to worry
about sourcing external amplifiers and
then finding a home for them is a massive
bonus, and of course it reduces cabling
as well—which in turn reduces cost.”
Having eliminated the need for external
amplifiers, Cinema Architects were
able to select a processor based on its
surround sound capabilities and not its
amplification power. They opted for an
affordable NAD receiver which produces
excellent quality sound and is upgradeable
both in terms of software and
hardware, thus lengthening its service
life and representing considerable cost
savings. The Genelec loudspeakers are
also supported by regular free firmware
updates, which increases longevity.
The Cinema Architects team also appreciates
the ease with which Genelec Smart
Active models can be set-up and calibrated
using GLM software. “It’s really
easy to get the system sounding great,
even in awkward acoustic spaces,”
confirms Tavares. “We’re able to calibrate
the loudspeakers precisely the

way we want to, so that we can guarantee
crystal clear, transparent audio,
whatever the constraints. Finally, their
durability is also second to none; once
installed, we know they will be fit for
purpose for many years to come.
“In short, the active design and superlative
audio quality of Genelec loudspeakers
offer advantages for us at several levels:
overall the system is much more compact
and easier to install—having removed the
need for bulky external amplifiers and
associated cabling, all we need to add is a
processor and a source (such as a Blu-ray
player or Apple TV etc.); consequently we
have much more flexibility when it comes
to the choice of a processor. The result is
a high quality, reliable and sustainable system
that will perform beautifully for decades
to come. Using Genelec has allowed
us to be more creative, to push the boundaries
of what’s possible, and to produce
a world-class cinema every time.”
