Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser,
Dear readers,

sobald die Wolken aufbrechen und sich die Straßen,
Cafés und Dachterrassen wieder mit Leben füllen,
hebt sich auch unsere Laune wie von selbst. Die große
deutsche Dichterin und Komponistin Annette von
Droste-Hülshoff beschrieb diese Vergnügtheit, die
man gerade überall in der Stadt spürt und die auch das
Motto dieser Ausgabe ist, einst mit treffenden Worten:
„Der Frühling ist die schönste Zeit, was kann wohl
schöner sein? Da grünt und blüht es weit und breit im
goldnen Sonnenschein.“ Kein Wunder, dass es auch
unsere Gäste im Bayerischen Hof nach draußen zieht.
Auf den nächsten Seiten haben wir daher nicht nur die
spannendsten Veranstaltungen für Sie zusammengestellt,
sondern nehmen Sie mit auf die schönsten Exkursionen
durch die Stadt. Unser Haus ist nämlich der
perfekte Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge jeder Art. Zum
Beispiel mit dem Fahrrad. Von hier aus starten Touren
in den Englischen Garten und nach Süden, entlang der
Isar. Wer auf Unterstützung verzichten möchte, leiht
sich ein herkömmliches Rad, für alle anderen warten
sechs hauseigene E-Bikes an der Rezeption.
Und wer weiß, vielleicht fahren Sie ja Moritz
Bleibtreu bei Ihrer Spritztour über den Weg. Der
Schauspieler, der auch das Cover dieser Ausgabe
ziert, ist in München geboren und der Stadt und
Ihrer Lebenslust immer noch sehr verbunden. Im
Interview spricht er über neue Herausforderungen,
seine große Liebe und warum in der Filmbranche
der Wille genauso wichtig ist wie das Talent. Sein
Lieblingsort in unserem Haus ist übrigens der Pool
im Blue Spa – und damit ist er nicht allein. In unserer
Rubrik Flashback erinnern wir uns gemeinsam mit
Ihnen an eine legendäre Szene aus der 80er-Jahre-
Kultserie „Kir Royal“, die der Regisseur Helmut Dietl
mit Mario Adorf im Bademantel in unserem Haus
drehte.

as soon as the clouds break and the streets, cafés and
rooftop terraces fill with life again, our mood lifts of
its own accord. The great German poet and composer
Annette von Droste-Hülshoff once described this
cheerfulness, which can be felt everywhere in the city
and which is also the motto of this issue, with apt
words: “Spring is the most beautiful time, what could
be more beautiful? It’s green and blooming far and
wide in the golden sunshine.” No wonder our guests
at the Bayerischer Hof are also drawn to the outdoors.
On the following pages, we have therefore not only
put together the most exciting events for you, but also
take you on the most beautiful excursions through the
city. Our hotel is the perfect starting point for excursions
of all kinds. By bike, for example. Tours to the
English Garden and southwards along the Isar start
from here. If you want to do without assistance, you
can hire a conventional bike; for everyone else, six of
our own e-bikes are waiting at reception.
And who knows, you might even bump into Moritz
Bleibtreu on your ride. The actor, who also graces the
cover of this issue, was born in Munich and is still
very attached to the city and its joie de vivre. In this
interview, he talks about new challenges, his big love
and why determination is just as important as talent
in the film industry. Incidentally, his favourite place
in our house is the pool in the Blue Spa - and he’s not
alone. In our Flashback section, we reminisce with
you about a legendary scene from the 80s cult series
“Kir Royal”, which director Helmut Dietl shot in our
hotel with Mario Adorf in a bathrobe.
By the way: A visit to the Bayerischer Hof not only

KISS AND KILL
Wie verflochten sind Biosphäre und Technosphäre? Mit dieser
Frage beschäftigt sich die erste institutionelle Überblicksausstellung
„Kiss Kiss Kill Kill“ der taiwanesischen Künstlerin
Shu Lea Cheang im Haus der Kunst. Die Werke erstrecken sich
über vier Galerieräume, jeder eine eigene Welt, in der internetbasierte
Installationen, Software-Interaktionen und Multiplayer-Performances
das Publikum zum Entdecken und Spielen
animieren.
How intertwined are the biosphere and technosphere? The first
institutional survey exhibition “Kiss Kiss Kill Kill” by Taiwanese
artist Shu Lea Cheang at Haus der Kunst deals with this question.
The works extend across four gallery spaces, each a world
of its own, in which internet-based installations, software interactions
and multiplayer performances encourage the public to
discover and play.

Buch „Szenen einer Ehe“, das Loriot 1983 veröffentlichte. Den
humorvollen und scharfsinnigen Beobachtungen des Großmeisters
hauchen Senta Berger und Friedrich von Thun nun
auf der Bühne des Prinzregententheaters Leben und Lachen

What happens to love when the breakfast egg takes too long to
boil, the television is broken or there is political disagreement?
The book “Scenes from a Marriage”, which Loriot published in
1983, is about the pitfalls of a couple’s relationship. Senta Berger
and Friedrich von Thun now breathe life and laughter into the
grand master’s humorous and astute observations on the stage
of the Prinzregententheater. Worth seeing!

Jedes Jahr am Aschermittwoch tauchen Münchner Politiker
das Stadtsäckel in den Fischbrunnen auf dem Marienplatz.
Der Brauch geht auf das 15. Jahrhundert zurück und soll der
Stadt eine rosige finanzielle Zukunft sichern. Wer sich also
nach ein paar extra Scheinen in der Tasche sehnt, kommt vorbei
und wäscht seine Gelbbörse ebenfalls im Brunnenwasser.

Every year on Ash Wednesday, Munich politicians dip the city
purse into the fish fountain on Marienplatz. The custom dates
back to the 15th century and is intended to ensure a rosy financial
future for the city. So if you long for a few extra notes in your
pocket, come along and wash your wallet in the fountain water
too. It can‘t do any harm.

Auf den ersten Blick führen die beiden britischen Geheimagenten
George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) und Kathryn

des Landesverrats verdächtigt wird und Georg gezwungen
ist, sich zwischen der Liebe und seinem Land zu entscheiden.
Der Film „Black Bag: Doppeltes Spiel“ ist ein rasanter
Spionage-Thriller mit phänomenaler Besetzung.

SCHÖNER ALS DIE
WIRKLICHKEIT
Die täuschend echt wirkenden Stillleben von Blumen, Pflanzen,
Früchten und Schmetterlingen der Amsterdamer Künstlerin
Rachel Ruysch (1664–1750) waren schon zu ihren Lebzeiten
kostspielige Sammlerstücke. Die Nachfrage war so groß,
dass sie es sich leisten konnte, nur wenige Werke im Jahr zu
malen. Zu sehen sind die prachtvollen Gemälde nun in der
Ausstellung „Nature into Art“ in der Alten Pinakothek.
The deceptively realistic-looking still lifes of flowers, plants, fruit
and butterflies by the Amsterdam artist Rachel Ruysch (1664-
1750) were already expensive collector’s items during her lifetime.
Demand was so great that she could only afford to paint a
few works a year. These magnificent paintings can now be seen
in the exhibition “Nature into Art” at the Alte Pinakothek.

Diözese zu segnen und eine Nacht im bischöflichen Palais zu
verbringen. Doch während der Vorbereitungen auf den Besuch
des Heiligen Vaters, stolpert ein Skandal in Person einer
jungen Frau herein, der alle mitzureißen droht. Es wäre eine
Sünde, die Komödie „Kardinalfehler“ von Alistair Beaton und
Dietmar Jacobs zu verpassen.

Träumen mit offenen Augen? So zumindest fühlt sich die
atemberaubende Lichtshow „Enlightenment“ des Schweizer
Künstlerkollektivs Projektil in der St. Markus Kirche an. Untermalt
von den ikonischen Klängen von Vivaldi erstrahlen
die historischen Mauern im spektakulären Licht der 3D-Projektionen.
Die audiovisuelle Metamorphose von Frühling,
Sommer, Herbst und Winter und lassen den Alltag im Nu vergessen.
Ein magisches Erlebnis.
Dreaming with your eyes open? At least that’s what the breathtaking

Sein Divertimento schrieb der ungarische Komponist Béla
Bartók im August 1939, während er bereits seine Emigration
in die USA vorbereitete. Die bedrohliche politische Lage spiegelt
sich in den auftürmenden Klangballungen des 2. Satzes
wider. Im Gegensatz dazu steht Schumanns heitere Frühlingssymphonie.
Unter der Leitung der litauischen Dirigentin Mirga
Gražinyt-Tyla bringen die Münchner Philharmoniker das
kontrastreiche Programm auf die Bühne.
The Hungarian composer Béla Bartók wrote his Divertimento in
August 1939, while he was already preparing to emigrate to the
USA. The threatening political situation is reflected in the towering
clusters of sound in the 2nd movement. In contrast to this is Schumann’s
cheerful Spring Symphony. Under the direction of Lithuanian
conductor Mirga Gražinyt-Tyla, the Munich Philharmonic
Orchestra will bring this contrasting programme to the stage.

MASTER SUITE
Der gefeierte Porträtmaler Franz von Lenbach prägte im späten
19. Jahrhundert den Mythos von München als Kunststadt entscheidend
mit. Die Prachträume im ersten Stock seiner Museums-Villa
sind heute Werken des Hausherren gewidmet – und
sehen fast so aus, wie zu seinen Lebzeiten. Nach der Zerstörung
des Gebäudes im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die erste Etage anhand
alter Fotografien mit den originalen Möbeln und Objekten
rekonstruiert. Unbedingt vorbeischauen!
The celebrated portrait painter Franz von Lenbach played a decisive
role in shaping the myth of Munich as a city of art in the late
19th century. Today, the magnificent rooms on the first floor of
his museum villa are dedicated to the works of the master of the
house - and look almost as they did during his lifetime. After the
building was destroyed in the Second World War, the first floor
was reconstructed using old photographs of the original furniture
and artefacts. Be sure to stop by!

BETTER TOGETHER
Alle fünf Künstlerfreunde John Cage, Merce Cunningham,
Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg und Cy Twombly beeinflussten
mit ihren Werken die Kunst in der Nachkriegszeit
immens. Das Museum Brandhorst widmet dem kreativen
Kreis nun die Ausstellung „Five Friends“. Über 150 Gemälde,
Partituren, Bühnenrequisiten, Kostüme, Fotografien und
Archivalien geben Einblicke in den Schaffensprozess und der
Dynamik innerhalb des Kollektives.
All five artist friends John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jasper
Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly had an immense
influence on art in the post-war period with their works.
Museum Brandhorst is now dedicating the exhibition “Five
Friends” to this creative circle. Over 150 paintings, scores, stage
props, costumes, photographs and archive material provide
an insight into the creative process and the dynamics within
the collective.

EIN MORDSSPASS
Zwölf Verdächtige und eine Frage: Wer hat den Kunsthändler
Ratchett ermordet? An gleich mehreren Tagen macht der legendäre
Orientexpress im Deutschen Theater Halt und bringt
Agatha Christies berühmte Erzählung mit einem eigens komponierten
Soundtrack auf die Bühne. Die spannende Neuinszenierung
ist ein Muss für alle Krimi-Fans.
Twelve suspects and one question: who murdered the art
dealer Ratchett? The legendary Orient Express makes a stop
at the Deutsches Theater on several days and brings Agatha
Christie’s famous story to the stage with a specially composed
soundtrack. This exciting new production is a must for all
crime thriller fans.

BUNTES TREIBEN
Das erste große Volksfest des Jahres ist ein guter Grund, die
Tracht wieder aus dem Schrank zu holen. Beim zweiwöchigen
Frühlingsfest auf der Theresienwiese warten wie gewöhnlich
nicht nur mehrere Festzelte und über 100 Schausteller
mit Buden und Fahrgeschäften auf die Gäste, sondern
auch ein spannendes Rahmenprogramm. Zum Beispiel das
Oldtimertreffen unterhalb der Bavaria am 27. April. Ab 10
Uhr fahren dort die Oldie-Fans ihre herausgeputzten Fahrzeuge
spazieren.
The first big folk festival of the year is a good reason to get
your traditional costume out of the wardrobe again. As
usual, the two-week spring festival on the Theresienwiese
not only has several marquees and over 100 showmen with
stalls and rides, but also an exciting supporting programme.
For example, the classic car meeting below the Bavaria on
27 April. From 10 a.m., classic car fans will be driving their
spruced-up vehicles around.

GITARRENGURUS
Mit Folk-Hymnen wie „Ho Hey” und „Ophelia” verewigte sich
die US-amerikanische Band The Lumineers auf den Roadtrip-
Playlisten dieser Welt. Jetzt kommt das Songwriter-Duo Wesley
Schultz und Jeremiah Fraites mit ihrem charakteristischen
Akustiksound nach München. Feuerzeuge nicht vergessen!
With folk anthems such as “Ho Hey” and “Ophelia”, US band

KREATIVE SYMBIOSE
Die ganze Bandbreite lokaler und internationaler zeitgenössischer
Kunst ist beim Artfestival „Various Others“ zu bestaunen.
In diesem Jahr sind 17 Galerien, 16 Institutionen und 5 Artist
Run Spaces sowie mehr als 200 nationale und internationale
Künstlerinnen und Künstlern Teil des Programms. Wie immer
liegt der Fokus im Austausch, im Dialog und in der gegenseitigen
Inspiration. Eine der Locations des Kunstfestivals ist übrigens
der Bayerische Hof.
The entire spectrum of local and international contemporary
art can be marvelled at at the “Various Others” art festival. This
year, 17 galleries, 16 institutions and 5 Artist Run Spaces as well
as more than 200 national and international artists are part of
the programme. As always, the focus is on exchange, dialogue
and mutual inspiration. Incidentally, one of the locations of the
art festival is the Bayerischer Hof.

MUSIK IM MONDLICHT
Eine Stadt, eine Nacht – und über 400 Konzerte an rund 100
verschiedenen Orten. Bei der Langen Nacht der Musik verwandeln
sich wieder Cafés, Restaurants, Druckereien, Buchhandlungen
und Schwimmbäder bis weit nach Mitternacht
in Live-Bühnen, DJ-Pults und Tanzflächen. Zu hören gibt es
nahezu jede Musikrichtung – von Klassik über Jazz, Rock und
Pop bis hin zu Funk und Volksmusik ist alles dabei.

shops, bookshops and swimming pools are once again transformed
into live stages, DJ booths and dance floors until well after

Die „Peer Gynt“-Suite Nr. 1 op. 46 gehört zu den bekanntesten
Werken des norwegischen Komponisten Edvard Grieg und gilt
The “Peer Gynt” Suite No. 1 op. 46 is one of the best-known works
by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and, with its picturesque
and characterful melodies, is considered a masterpiece of
Romantic music. The Munich Symphony Orchestra will perform
the piece under the baton of chief conductor Joseph Bastian. At

Und das Hotel ist der ideale Startpunkt für eine ganz besondere Exkursion durch die Stadt.

Nur ein paar Schritte vom Königsplatz entfernt liegt das Lenbachhaus, einst das Wohnund
Atelierhaus des Münchner Malers Franz von Lenbach. Seine Witwe vermachte es
1924 der Stadt, die es zu einem Museum umbaute. Es zeigt die bedeutendste Sammlung
von Werken des Blauen Reiters mit Gemälden von Wassily Kandinsky, August
Macke, Gabriele Münter und Franz Marc. Zu sehen ist aber auch internationale Gegenwartskunst
von Gerhard Richter, Ruprecht Geiger oder Maria Lassnig.
Vom Lenbachhaus ist es nicht weit zum Beginn der für Münchner Verhältnisse sehr
breiten Nymphenburger Straße. Ihr Name weist daraufhin, was einst ihr Zweck war:
Sie führte aus der damals noch recht überschaubaren Stadt hinaus zur Sommerresidenz
der Bayerischen Kurfürsten, nach Schloss Nymphenburg. Sie mündet in der Südlichen
Auffahrtsallee, am Nymphenburger Kanal. Von hier ist das Schlossensemble
mit seiner eindrucksvollen Fontäne davor bereits in der Ferne zu sehen.
Natürlich ließe sich hier mühelos ein ganzer Tag verbringen, allein, um den nach
französischem Vorbild ursprünglich geometrisch angelegten und vom Landschafts-

to Klenze’s plans, whose buildings were modelled on classical antiquity. The
façade is modelled on Greek temples, while the interior, with its vaulted ceilings, is reminiscent
of Roman baths. Masterpieces of ancient sculpture can be seen in 14 rooms.
How did they get there? The Wittelsbach family began collecting antiquities as early
as the 16th century. The Greek and Roman statues in the Glyptothek were acquired
between 1810 and 1820. Opposite the Glyptothek is another museum, the Antikensammlung
(Collection of Classical Antiquities), which mainly displays vases, jewellery and
bronzes. The café in the Glyptothek is also a favourite with locals, especially on sunny
days. In the middle of the city, the hustle and bustle of the surrounding area can be
completely forgotten in the museum’s inner courtyard. And it doesn’t take much imagination
to see yourself in Athens or Rome.

man ihn erst mal betreten hat. Zu vielfältig
sind die Möglichkeiten, auf sieben
Etagen seine Zeit auf angenehmste
Weise zu verbringen. Ein Anlass dazu
ergibt sich im Frühling, wenn
die Natur erwacht, die Einheimischen
ihre Winterfelle
ablegen, und sich das Leben
in der Stadt wieder überwiegend
draußen abspielt, auf
den Straßen, an der Isar, in
Cafes, Innenhöfen und auf
Dachterrassen.
Die vielleicht beste Art und
Weise, auch mit wenig Zeit
viel davon mitzubekommen,
ist, die Stadt mit dem Rad
zu erkunden. Der Bayerische
Hof ist ein idealer Startpunkt
für eine Tour. Ganz gleich
ob man sich für eine Tour durch den
Englischen Garten Richtung Norden
entscheidet, für eine Fahrt Richtung
Süden entlang der Isar. Oder für einen
Ausflug, der nach Westen führt und einen
Ort zum Ziel hat, der dem Bayerischen
Hof engstens verbunden ist: die
Weinhandlung Volkhardts in Pasing. Dafür kann man sich eins von sechs hauseigenen
E-Bikes leihen, wer auf Unterstützung lieber verzichtet, kann an der Rezeption
ein herkömmliches Rad bekommen. Elf Kilometer sind es auf dem kürzesten Weg,
durch den Hirschgarten, vorbei an Münchens größtem Biergarten, doch es lohnt,
ein paar Abstecher zu machen. An Orte, die viel über die Geschichte Bayerns und
Münchens erzählen, die eng mit der Geschichte des Bayerischen Hofs verknüpft ist.
Nur ein paar Minuten sind es vom Promenadeplatz zur Glyptothek am Königsplatz,
weltweit das einzige Museum, das ausschließlich antiken Skulpturen gewidmet ist.
In Auftrag gegeben wurde es von König Ludwig I., von der bei seinen Lieblingsbaumeistern
Leo von Klenze und Friedrich von Gärtner eine Reihe von Bauten errichten
ließ, die bis heute das Stadtbild Münchens prägen, darunter auch den Bayerischen
Hof. Die Glyptothek entstand nach Plänen von Klenze, dessen Bauten sich die
klassische Antike zum Vorbild nahmen. Die Fassade orientiert sich an griechischen
Tempeln, die Innenräume mit ihren gewölbten Decken erinnern an römische Thermen.
In 14 Säalen sind Meisterwerke antiker Bildhauerkunst zu sehen. Wie sie dort
hinkamen? Die Wittelsbacher haben mit dem Sammeln von Antiken bereits im 16.
Jahrhundert begonnen, die griechischen und römischen Statuen in der Glyptothek,
wurden in den Jahren zwischen 1810 und 1820 erworben. Gegenüber der Glyptothek
befindet sich ein weiteres Museum, die Antikensammlung, sie zeigt insbesondere
Vasen, Schmuck und Bronzen. Unter Münchnern ist auch das Café in der Glyptothek
ein Geheimtipp, zumal an Sonnentagen. Mitten in der Stadt lässt sich im Innenhof
des Museums das hektische Getriebe ringsum völlig vergessen. Und es bedarf nicht
viel Fantasie, um sich in Athen oder Rom zu wähnen.

HOF ARE ALSO DRAWN OUTSIDE. AND THE HOTEL IS THE IDEAL STARTING POINT
FOR A VERY SPECIAL EXCURSION THROUGH THE CITY.
There are not many good reasons to leave the Bayerischer Hof once you have entered it.
The opportunities for spending your time in the most pleasant way on seven floors are
too varied. One occasion for this arises in spring, when nature awakens, the locals shed
their winter coats and life in the city once again takes place predominantly outside, on
the streets, at the Isar, in cafes, courtyards and on roof terraces. Perhaps the best way
to see a lot of it, even with little time, is to explore the city by bike. The Bayerischer Hof
is an ideal starting point for a tour. No matter whether you decide on a tour through
the English Garden in a northerly direction, or a tour in a southerly direction along
the Isar. Or a tour that leads west to a place that is closely associated with the Bayerischer
Hof: the Volkardts wine shop in Pasing. You can borrow one of six e-bikes at the
hotel, or if you prefer to do without assistance, you can rent a conventional bike from
reception. The shortest route is eleven kilometres long, through the Hirschgarten, past
Munich’s largest beer garden, but it’s worth making a few detours. Places that tell a lot
about the history of Bavaria and Munich, which is closely linked to the history of the
Bayerischer Hof.
It takes just a few minutes to walk from the Promenadeplatz to the Glyptothek on the
Königsplatz, the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to ancient sculptures.
It was commissioned by King Ludwig I, who had a series of buildings constructed by
his favourite architects, Leo von Klenze and Friedrich von Gärtner, which still shape
architekten Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell in einen Park englischer Prägung verwandelten
Park zu erkunden. Aber mit dem Rad darf man durch die 180 Hektar große
Anlage ohnehin nicht fahren, so muss man sich entscheiden: Zwischen einem Besuch
der Amalienburg, einer der ältesten erhaltenen Rokokobauten Europas, dem
Marstallmuseum mit seiner historischen Kutschensammlung, der Schönheitengalerie
mit Porträts adeliger wie bürgerlicher Münchnerinnen des 19. Jahrhunderts, der
Sammlung der Porzellanmanufaktur Nymphenburg oder dem Besuch einer auch für
Kinder und Jugendliche immer sehr spannenden Ausstellung im Museum Mensch
und Natur. Oder für einen Stopp im Café Palmenhaus.
An der Schlossmauer entlang führt ein Radweg Richtung Pasing zur Weinhandlung
Volkhardts, die nicht ganz so alt ist wie der Bayerische Hof, mittlerweile aber auch
schon seit mehr als 115 Jahren existiert. Ursprünglich unterhielt die Familie Volkardt
eine eigene Weinkellerei im Haus am Promenadeplatz. Als dort in den 70er-Jahren
das Trader Vic‘s einzog, verlegte die Weinhandlung ihren Sitz nach Pasing. Volkhardts
beliefert nicht nur den Bayerischen Hof mit Weinen und Spirituosen, sondern rund
350 Restaurants und Hotels in München und im Süden Bayerns. 2008 eröffnete über
dem Lager ein Laden mit einer Auswahl, für die man sich etwas Zeit nehmen sollte.
Zu nahezu jedem Wein gibt es eine Geschichte zu erzählen und eine Empfehlung, zu
welchem Essen und zu welcher Gelegenheit er passt. Und das Beste: Sofern man sich
entscheidet, ein paar Flaschen mitzunehmen, muss man sie nicht selbst mit dem
Rad nach Hause bringen. Man kann sie sich an den Promenadeplatz liefern lassen.
Ein weiterer guter Grund, den Bayerischen Hof ab und an doch mal zu verlassen.

The Lenbachhaus is not far from
the beginning of Nymphenburger
Straße, which is very wide by Munich
standards. Its name indicates
what its purpose once was: it led out
of the then still quite manageable
city to the summer residence of the
Bavarian electors, Nymphenburg
Palace. It opens into the southern
driveway, on the Nymphenburg
Canal. From there, the palace ensemble
with its impressive fountain
in front of it can already be seen
from afar. Of course, you could easily
spend a whole day here just exploring the park, which was originally laid out in a
geometric pattern in the French style and then transformed into an English park by
landscape architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell. But you’re not allowed to take your
bike through the 180-hectare park anyway, so you have to choose: Between a visit to
the Amalienburg, one of the oldest preserved rococo buildings in Europe, the Marstallmuseum
with its historical collection of carriages, the Schönheitengalerie (Gallery of
Beauties) with portraits of noble and bourgeois Munich women of the 19th century,
the collection of the Nymphenburg porcelain manufactory or a visit to an exhibition at
the Museum Mensch und Natur (Museum of Man and Nature), which is always very
exciting for children and young people. Or a stop at Café Palmenhaus.
Along the palace wall, a cycle path leads towards Pasing to the Volkardts wine shop,
which is not quite as old as the Bayerischer Hof, but has been around for more than 115
years. Originally, the Volkardt family had their own winery in the building on Promenadeplatz.
When Trader Vic’s moved in during the 1960s, the wine store relocated to
Pasing. Volkardts not only supplies the Bayerischer Hof with wines and spirits, but also
around 350 restaurants and hotels in Munich and southern Bavaria. In 2008, a shop
was opened above the warehouse with a selection that you should take some time for.
There is a story to tell about almost every wine, along with a recommendation as to
which food and occasion it goes well with. And the best thing: if you decide to take a
few bottles home with you, you don’t have to take them home with you by bike. You can
have them delivered to Promenadeplatz. Another good reason to leave the Bayerischer
Hof from time to time.

zarter Spinat und Rhabarber. Fragt
man Philipp Pfisterer, Küchenchef des
Garden Restaurants im Bayerischen Hof,
nach seiner liebsten Saison, dann muss
er nicht lange überlegen: Es ist natürlich
der Frühling. Denn wenn die ersten Blumen
auf der Terrasse des Gardens erblühen,
ist seine Kreativität besonders gefragt.
„Ich liebe den Moment, wenn nach
den langen Wintermonaten endlich
Kräuter und Gemüsesorten verfügbar
sind und unsere leichten, farbenfrohen
‚Green Gusto‘- Gerichte die Speisekarten
erobern“, so Philipp Pfisterer. Für das kulinarische
Konzept, bei dem frische und
erlesene Zutaten im Fokus stehen, wurde
das Garden bereits mit einer Haube
mit Prädikat im Gault & Millau, 6,5 Pfannen
im Gusto und drei Kochmützen im
Großen Guide ausgezeichnet.
Eine der Hauptdarstellerinnen in Philipp
Pfisterers Frühlingskreationen ist die sizilianische
Marinda-Tomate. Sie gehört
zur Gruppe der Camone-Tomaten und
zeichnet sich durch ihr einzigartiges Geschmacksprofil
und die perfekte Balance
zwischen Süße und Säure aus. Mit ihrer
festen, saftigen Konsistenz und ihrem
knackigen Biss eignet sie sich hervorragend
für frische Salate und Tomaten-
Carpaccio. Auch der Spargel bekommt
im April und Mai traditionell seinen großen
Auftritt im Garden Restaurant – und
zwar in allen möglichen Formen und
Variationen. Gedünstet, gehobelt oder
gebraten, als Hauptgang oder Side-Dish.
Philipp Pfisterers liebste Kombination:
Ein Bett aus grünem Spargel, auf dem
mit Kalbsbries und Morcheln gefüllte
Maultaschen liegen, dazu eine samtige
Miso-Veloutè. Das Gericht begeisterte

Sugar snap peas, kohlrabi, pea sprouts,
tender spinach and rhubarb. If you ask
Philipp Pfisterer, head chef at the Garden
Restaurant in the Bayerischer Hof, what
his favourite season is, he doesn’t have to
think twice: it’s spring, of course. Because
when the first flowers bloom on the Garden’s
terrace, his creativity is particularly
in demand: “I love the moment when
herbs and vegetables are finally available
after the long winter months and our light,
colourful ‘Green Gusto’ dishes conquer the
menus,” says Philipp Pfisterer. For its culinary
concept, which focuses on fresh and
exquisite ingredients, the Garden has already
been awarded a toque with distinction
in Gault & Millau, 6.5 pans in Gusto
and 3 chef’s hats in the Great Guide.

und frischem Bärlauch, sowie ein
Frühlingsragout mit zartem Stubenküken
werden sich in dieser Saison auf der
Speisekarte finden.
Das Garden Restaurant im Bayerischen
Hof ist bekannt dafür, bewährte Klassiker
neu und zeitgenössisch zu interpretieren
und auch Philipp Pfisterer hat viel Freude
daran, die Geschmacksbibliothek
seiner Gäste ein wenig umzuschreiben.
Im Frühling gelingt ihm das vor allem
mit Lammgerichten. „In Deutschland
verbinden wir Lamm mit der kalten Jahreszeit,
mit deftigen, schweren dunklen
Soßen und Wurzelgemüse. Das möchte
ich ändern. Denn in Griechenland und
der Levante ist das Tier seit Hunderten
von Jahren fester Bestandteil der lokalen
Küche – auch im Hochsommer.“ Statt das
Lamm also lange in einer Rotweinsoße
zu schmoren, serviert er das aromatische
Fleisch zum Beispiel mit jungem
Brokkoli, Paprika, Tomaten und einer
Prise Zimt.
Im Garden zeigt sich der Frühling aber
nicht nur auf den farbenfrohen und
hübsch angerichteten Tellern von seiner
besten Seite – auch das Interieur verstärkt
die heitere und beschwingte Stimmung,
die aktuell in der gesamten Stadt
zu spüren ist. Ein Wintergarten mit sechs
Meter hohen Fenstern, gedeckte Wandfarben,
dazu ein heller Boden aus Kirchheimer
Muschelkalk und eine Terrasse,
auf der Blauregen und Clemantis blühen
– im Garden dreht sich alles um Licht,
Luft und die Nähe zur Natur. Zu verdanken
sind die dezent-eleganten, hellen
Räume übrigens dem renommierten
belgischen Designer und Kunsthändler
Axel Vervoordt. Er gestaltete das Restaurant
im Industrial-Style wie ein Künstleratelier,
in dem der Fokus auf der herausragenden
Küche und auf dem Himmel
liegt. Und zwar nicht nur am Abend,
sondern auch zum Businesslunch.

One of the main protagonists in Philipp Pfisterer’s spring creations is the Sicilian
Marinda tomato. It belongs to the Camone tomato family and is characterised by its
unique flavour profile and the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. With
its firm, juicy texture and crunchy bite, it is ideal for fresh salads and tomato carpaccio.
Asparagus also traditionally makes its grand entrance at the Garden Restaurant in
April and May - in all possible forms and variations. Steamed, sliced or fried, as a main
course or side dish. Philipp Pfisterer’s favourite combination: a bed of green asparagus
with ravioli stuffed with sweetbreads and morels, served with a velvety miso veloutè.
The dish delighted so many guests last year that there is a good chance of a revival this
year. Gnocchetti with pistachios and fresh wild garlic, as well as a spring ragout with
tender poussin will also be on the menu this season. The Garden Restaurant at the Bayerischer
Hof is known for reinterpreting tried and tested classics in a new and contemporary
way and Philipp Pfisterer also enjoys rewriting his guests’ flavour library a little.
In spring, he is particularly successful with lamb dishes. “In Germany, we associate
lamb with the cold season, with hearty, heavy, dark sauces and root vegetables. I want
to change that. Because in Greece and the Levant, the animal has been an integral part
of local cuisine for hundreds of years - even in the height of summer.” So instead of braising
the lamb for a long time in a red wine sauce, he serves the flavoursome meat with
young broccoli, peppers, tomatoes and a pinch of cinnamon, for example.
At the Garden Restaurant, however, spring is not only at its best on the colourful and
beautifully draped plates - the interior also pays tribute to the cheerful and upbeat
mood that can currently be felt throughout the city. A winter garden with six-metrehigh
windows, muted wall colours, a light floor made of Kirchheim shell limestone and
a terrace on which blue rain and clemantis bloom - everything in the Garden revolves
around light, air and closeness to nature. Incidentally, the discreetly elegant, bright
rooms are thanks to the renowned Belgian designer and art dealer Axel Vervoordt.
He designed the industrial-style restaurant like an artist’s studio, where the focus is on
the outstanding cuisine and the sky. And not just in the evening, but also for business
lunches.

War es ein Missverständnis, ein Versprecher oder gar eine raffinierte
Marketing-Strategie? Um die Entstehungsgeschichte des
„Munich Mule“ ranken sich viele Mythen. Was indes kein Geheimnis
ist: Der würzig-frische Frühlingsdrink, den man anders
als seinen Namensvetter, den „Moscow Mule“, mit Gin statt Vodka
mixt, ist seit Jahren nicht mehr von den Barkarten der bayerischen
Landeshauptstadt wegzudenken.
Zu verdanken ist das vor allem Max Schauerte, Daniel
Schönecker und ihrer Schnapsidee. Ausgerechnet
in der Hochburg des Bieres gründeten die beiden
Münchner 2008 die Destillerie „The Duke“
– mit der Vision, einen bodenständigen Gin
aus hochwertigen und regionalen Zutaten zu
kreieren, der es mit den großen internationalen
Marken der Branche aufnehmen kann.
Mit Erfolg: Heute ist „The Duke“ weit über die
Stadtgrenzen für seinen exzellenten Craft-Gin
bekannt und sorgt mit einer besonderen Rezeptur
dafür, dass auch der „Munich Mule“ in aller Munde ist.
Neben klassischen Botanicals wie Wacholder, Koriander, Angelikawurzel,
Lavendel und Zitronenschale sind auch zwei bayerische
Zutaten Teil der Komposition: Hopfenblüten und Malz.
Sie verleihen The Duke Munich Dry Gin eine leicht süßliche und
würzige Note, die perfekt mit der Schärfe von Ginger Beer und
der Frische von Limetten harmoniert. Und weil wir an der falk’s
Bar im Bayerischen Hof am liebsten lokale Produkte verwenden
und Münchner Gründer unterstützen, servieren wir den ikonischen

THERE’S A LOT OF MUNICH IN THIS DRINK
Was it a misunderstanding, a slip of the tongue or even a clever
marketing strategy? There are many myths surrounding the
origins of the “Munich Mule”. What is no secret, however, is
that the spicy-fresh spring drink, which unlike its namesake,
the “Moscow Mule”, is mixed with gin instead of vodka, has
been an integral part of the Bavarian capital’s bar menu for
years.
This is mainly thanks to Max Schauerte, Daniel
Schönecker and their “schnapps” idea. In 2008,
the two Munich residents founded the distillery
“The Duke” in the stronghold of beer of all
places - with the vision of creating a down-toearth
gin from high-quality, regional ingredients
that could compete with the big international
brands in the industry. With success:
today, “The Duke” is known far beyond the city
limits for its excellent craft gin and, with its special
recipe, ensures that the “Munich Mule” is also on
everyone’s lips. In addition to classic botanicals such as juniper,
coriander, angelica root, lavender and lemon peel, two Bavarian
ingredients are also part of the composition: hop blossom
and malt. They give The Duke Munich Dry Gin a slightly sweet
and spicy note that harmonises perfectly with the sharpness of
ginger beer and the freshness of lime. And because we at falk’s
Bar im Bayerischen Hof prefer to use local products and support
Munich founders, we naturally serve the iconic “Munich
Mule” with Duke Gin. Our bartenders mix ice cubes, gin, lime
juice and spicy ginger beer in a highball glass and garnish the

Whether as art forger Kujau or pothead
Kai, RAF terrorist Baader or electrician
Kudinski (in his current series ‘Viktor
bringt’s’) – this man can somehow
do everything: sophisticated, complex,
straightforward, funny... Moritz Bleibtreu
has now appeared in more than 100
films, and new projects are, of course,
already in the making. When we meet
him for our interview, he has another
busy weekend behind him: the Bavarian
Film Award on Friday, the Film Ball
here at the Bayerischer Hof on Saturday
and now the cover shoot for this issue.
Despite all the hustle and bustle, however,
the actor seems totally relaxed when
we ask him about his great love, his
self-image as an actor and his relationship
with Munich, the city of his birth.
You have been in the business for over
30 years. Do you still feel the same
passion for acting as you did at the
beginning of your career?
That hasn’t changed. The great thing
about the profession is that the roles
change over the years and as you get
older, as do the backgrounds of what you
play. Acting is a profession that you can
pursue as long as there are stories and
characters that you can play.
So the job never gets boring?
At best, yes, as long as you keep getting
offered roles that allow you to grow.
Is this variety also the reason why you
haven’t shot any series for so long?
In the past, series were primarily an
economic undertaking. They tried to keep
people glued to their screens for as long
as possible and a certain simplicity in the
narrative structure was desired. That has
changed in the meantime. What remains
is the fact that you may work on a character
for four or five years. That’s why so
many actors from my mother’s generation
didn’t want to do series. That also
applies to me. I much prefer watching
films, I like it when a story is manageable,
as is the length, and the whole thing
somehow has an end. I feel the same way
about work. Films are my great love –
and for me, the cinema has always been
the most beautiful space to let this profession
take place.
Ob Kunstfälscher Kujau oder Kiffer Kai,
RAF-Terrorist Baader oder Elektriker Kudinski
(in seiner aktuellen Serie „Viktor
bringt’s“) – dieser Mann kann irgendwie
alles: anspruchsvoll, komplex, geradlinig,
witzig. Mittlerweile hat Moritz Bleibtreu
in mehr als 100 Filmen mitgespielt, neue
Projekte sind, na klar, schon in Arbeit. Als
wir ihn zum Gastgespräch treffen, liegt
ein weiteres geschäftiges Wochenende
hinter ihm: der Bayerische Filmpreis am
Freitag, am Samstag der Filmball hier
im Bayerischen Hof und nun das Cover-
Shooting für dieses Heft.
Trotz all dem Trubel wirkt der Schauspieler
jedoch total entspannt, als wir ihn
über seine große Liebe, sein Selbstbild als
Schauspieler und seine Beziehung zu seiner
Geburtsstadt München befragen.
Sie sind seit über 30 Jahren im
Geschäft. Verspüren Sie noch immer
dieselbe Leidenschaft fürs Schauspiel
wie zu Beginn Ihrer Karriere?
Das hat sich nicht gerändert.
Das Schöne an dem Beruf ist ja, dass
sich auch die Rollen mit den Jahren
und dem Älterwerden verändern,
ebenso die Hintergründe von dem, was
du spielst. Die Schauspielerei ist ein
Beruf, den du ausüben kannst, solange
es Geschichten und Figuren gibt, die du
spielen kannst.
Es wird in dem Job also nie langweilig?
Bestenfalls, ja, solange du immer wieder
Rollen angeboten bekommst, mit
denen du wachsen darfst.
Ist diese Vielfalt auch der Grund,
weshalb Sie so lange keine Serien
gedreht haben?
Früher waren Serien primär ein wirtschaftliches
Unterfangen. Man hat
versucht, die Leute so lange wie möglich
am Endgerät zu halten und eine
bestimmte Schlichtheit in der Erzählstruktur
war gewollt. Mittlerweile hat
sich das verändert. Was bleibt, ist die
Tatsache, dass du dich unter Umständen
an einer Figur vier, fünf Jahre lang
abarbeitest. Deshalb hatten auch so
viele Schauspieler aus der Generation
meiner Mutter keine Lust auf Serien.
Das gilt auch für mich. Ich selbst gucke
viel lieber Filme, mag‘s, wenn eine

Do you particularly like a certain genre?
Not really. I feel kind of comfortable in everything. But I see myself as an actor much
more as a tool – in the very best sense. For me, it’s totally exciting to try out different
genres and acting styles. Because I don’t tell the stories of the films I act in from the
point of view of the recipient. If I only made films that I would want to see as a viewer,
I would probably make a film every three years.
So you see yourself more as a craftsman than as an artist?
Exactly. I don’t see myself as an art-bearing figure who aspires to reach the greatest
heights of art in everything he does. I’m an actor, that’s my job, I’ve done good films
and bad ones too. But that’s secondary for me. Working on the character, the experience,
making the film as such – that’s what’s important to me. And I do that with all
my conviction and with all my heart. Whether it is ultimately successful is relatively
unimportant to me. The comparison with craftsmanship is only misleading in one
respect: it is easier to draw quality boundaries there than in acting.
Can a bad actor muddle through better?
Maybe not a bad one, but a mediocre one. However, no one is always good either.
How do you become good?
Above all, it takes a huge amount of willpower, especially in the film industry. In
theatre, the motivation of the actors is certainly somewhat different. But basically,
willpower is at least as important as talent.
Are there roles that have particularly challenged you?
Of course there are films that are harder for you than others. But the question is always:
was it the film? Or the story? Or the way you deal with the character? Or maybe
you just had an idiot for a director? That happens too. But that’s also the great thing
about the job: you never get to the point where you read a scene and think, ‘I’ve seen
this a million times before.’ It’s a constant new challenge.
And the opposite of routine?
As an actor, you can never really achieve a routine – and if you do, it’s probably unhealthy.
Instead, you’re always standing in front of a blank sheet of paper. Because
you have to say this sentence as if you’d never said it before.
Geschichte überschaubar ist, ebenso die Länge, und das Ganze irgendwie ein
Ende hat. Ähnlich geht‘s mir auch mit der Arbeit. Filme sind meine große Liebe
– und Kino war für mich immer der schönste Raum, um diesen Beruf stattfinden
zu lassen.
Mögen Sie ein bestimmtes Genre besonders?
Eigentlich nicht. Ich fühle mich in allem irgendwie wohl. Aber ich verstehe mich
als Schauspieler viel eher als Werkzeug – im allerbesten Sinne. Für mich ist es
total spannend, verschiedene Genres und Spielstile auszuprobieren. Denn die Filme,
in denen ich spiele, erzähle ich ja nicht aus der Sicht des Rezipienten. Würde
ich nur Filme machen, die ich als Zuschauer sehen möchte, käme ich vermutlich
auf einen Film alle drei Jahre.
Sie empfinden sich also eher als Handwerker statt als Künstler?
Genau. Ich sehe mich nicht als kunsttragende Figur, die in allem, was sie tut, den
Anspruch hat, die größten Höhen der Kunst zu erreichen. Ich bin Schauspieler,
das ist mein Beruf, ich habe gute Filme gemacht und auch schlechte. Aber das ist
für mich sekundär. Die Arbeit an der Figur, das Erleben, das Machen des Films als
solches – das alles ist für mich entscheidend. Und das mache ich mit all meiner
Überzeugung und mit ganzem Herzen. Ob das am Ende erfolgreich wird, ist mir
relativ egal. Nur in einer Beziehung hinkt der Vergleich zum Handwerk: Dort ist es
einfacher, Qualitätsgrenzen zu ziehen, als bei der Schauspielerei.
Kann sich ein schlechter Schauspieler besser durchmogeln?
Vielleicht kein schlechter, aber ein mittelmäßiger. Jedoch ist auch niemand immer
nur gut.
Wie wird man denn gut?
Dazu braucht es vor allem eine Riesenportion Willen, gerade im Filmbereich.
Im Theater ist die Motivation der Schauspieler sicher etwas anders gelagert. Aber
grundsätzlich ist Willen mindestens genauso wichtig wie Talent.
Gibt es Rollen, die Sie besonders herausgefordert haben?
Es gibt natürlich Filme, die dir schwerer fallen als andere. Aber da stellen sich
immer die Fragen: Lag das am Film? Oder an der Geschichte? Oder an der Aus-

You come from a family of actors. Did that help you to understand the challenges
of the profession earlier on?
Absolutely, especially when it comes to dealing with the profession realistically: how
do you deal with a certain kind of success? What do you have to hold on to? What are
the basic principles? What are the cornerstones? As the child of actors, I have a huge
advantage in that I grew up with such topics and learned very early on how to live
such a life.
The film industry is very time-consuming. What helps you to relax and recharge
your batteries?
When I work, I am driven by a certain speed, so my free time is my haven of peace.
Here at the Bayerischer Hof, you can also relax quite well...
And I always enjoy coming back here. The Bayerischer Hof is definitely one of the hotels
in Germany where I have spent the most time. It’s great that such places still exist
and are still run with so much love and passion.
You live in Hamburg, but have roots in Munich. What connects you to the city?
My parents are actually Austrian, and when my father came to Munich, where I was
born, the city took him in a bit – mainly because of the ‘Münchner Geschichten’ or
his work with Ruth Drexel at the Volkstheater. He also played Alois Baierl in a weekly
television programme on Bayerischer Rundfunk for ten years. So it seemed a bit like
he was Bavarian.
You have also appeared in a few Bavarian productions yourself.
I had the great good fortune to work with Helmut Dietl. And I love the Rosenmüller
films. But all in all, I still think there is not enough German cinema with local colour.
And Bavaria has a very special colour: the Bavarian language, the Bavarian dialect,
the diction is a unique, striking form of comedy that I love very much. I also find the
dry humour of someone like Gerhard Polt unique.
Are there any Bavarian customs that you associate with your place of birth?
I only remember wearing lederhosen as a child.
And you’ve never worn them since then?
Hamburg has suppressed that a bit and I’ve never been to the Oktoberfest yet.
What do you particularly like about Munich?
I like the Bavarian sense of humour and Munich is definitely the most beautiful part
of Germany in culinary terms. It’s an incredibly pleasant city, also to work in.
When will you be back?
Soon, definitely. Preferably in summer, when you can swim
in the open-air pool at the Bayerischer Hof.

einandersetzung mit der Figur? Vielleicht hast du auch einfach einen Idioten als
Regisseur gehabt? Das gibt’s auch. Aber das ist zugleich das Schöne am Beruf: Du
kommst nie an den Punkt, an dem du eine Szene liest und sagst „Kenn ich, hab
ich schon x-mal gespielt.“ Es ist eine ewig neue Herausforderung.
Und das Gegenteil von Routine?
Routine kannst du als Schauspieler nie wirklich erlangen – und wenn, dann ist es
vermutlich ungesund. Stattdessen stehst du immer wieder vor einem weißen Blatt
Papier. Weil du diesen Satz ja nun mal so sagen musst, als hättest du ihn noch nie
zuvor gesagt.
Sie stammen aus einer Schauspielerfamilie. Wussten Sie dadurch eher, welche
Herausforderungen der Beruf mitbringt?
Absolut, speziell, was den realistischen Umgang mit dem Beruf betrifft: Wie geht
man mit einer bestimmten Art von Erfolg um? Woran muss man sich festhalten?
Was sind die Grundprinzipien? Was sind die Eckpfeiler? Schauspielerkinder wie
ich haben da einen Riesenvorteil, mit solchen Themen groß geworden zu sein und
sehr früh gelernt zu haben, wie man so ein Leben lebt.
Die Filmbranche ist sehr zeitintensiv. Was hilft Ihnen, sich zu entspannen und
neue Energie zu tanken?
Wenn ich arbeite, bin ich von einer ziemlichen Geschwindigkeit bestimmt, daher
ist meine Freizeit mein Ruhepol.
Hier im Bayerischen Hof kann man auch ganz gut entspannen …
Und ich komme immer wieder gerne her. Der Bayerische Hof gehört definitiv zu
den Hotels in Deutschland, in denen ich die meiste Zeit verbracht habe. Toll, dass
es solche Häuser noch gibt, die nach wie vor mit so viel Liebe und Leidenschaft
geführt werden.
Sie leben in Hamburg, haben jedoch Wurzeln in München. Was verbindet Sie
mit der Stadt?
Meine Eltern sind ja eigentlich Österreicher und als mein Vater nach München
kam, wo ich geboren wurde, hat ihn die Stadt so ein bisschen eingeheimst – vor
allem wegen der „Münchner Geschichten“ oder seiner Arbeit mit Ruth Drexel am
Volkstheater. Außerdem spielte er zehn Jahre lang den Alois Baierl in einer wöchentlichen
Fernsehrubrik beim Bayerischen Rundfunk. So entstand ein bisschen
der Eindruck, er sei Bayer.
Sie selbst haben auch schon in einigen bayerischen Produktionen mitgespielt.
Ich hatte das große Glück, noch mit Helmut Dietl drehen zu dürfen. Und ich
liebe die Rosenmüller-Filme. Doch insgesamt gibt es mir immer noch zu wenig
deutsches Kino mit Lokalkolorit. Und Bayern hat da eine ganz spezielle Farbe: die
bayerische Sprache, der bayerische Dialekt, die Diktion ist eine eigene, markante
Form von Comedy, die ich sehr liebe. Auch die trockene Art eines Gerhard Polt
finde ich einzigartig.
Gibt es bayerische Bräuche, die Sie mit Ihrem Geburtsort verbinden?
Ich weiß nur noch, dass ich in meiner Kindheit Lederhosen getragen habe.
Und seither nie wieder?
Hamburg hat das ein bisschen verdrängt. Und auf dem Oktoberfest war ich noch
nie, das hat sich noch nicht ergeben.

Ich mag den bayerischen Humor und kulinarisch ist München auf jeden Fall der
schönste Teil Deutschlands. Es ist eine unheimlich angenehme Stadt, auch zum
Arbeiten.
Wann kommen Sie wieder?
Bald, ganz bestimmt. Am besten im Sommer, wenn man im Pool des Bayerischen
Hofs unter freiem Himmel schwimmen kann.

Der Deutsche Filmball ist eines der wichtigsten
gesellschaftlichen Ereignisse der
bayerischen Landeshauptstadt und ein
fester Termin im alljährlichen kulturellen
Kalender. Die Spitzenorganisation der
Filmwirtschaft (SPIO) lud in diesem Jahr
zum 49. Mal Filmschaffende und Prominente
aus Kultur, Medien und Politik in
den Bayerischen Hof.
Nachdem gegen 20 Uhr die letzten Gäste
ihren Weg vom roten Teppich in den
Festsaal gefunden hatten, schlossen sich
die Türen und der Abend begann mit
einer fulminanten Zeremonie. Hinter
den Kulissen traf das Team um Fotograf
Alexander Courtman indes die letzten
Vorbereitungen für eine ganz besondere
„Photo Op“ für alle Ballgäste: die Memory
Box im Store von RIANI.
Dass es diesen Ort gibt, an dem man
sich eine unvergessliche Erinnerung
mitnehmen und die Wartezeit bei feinster
elektronischer Musik und eiskalten
Espresso Martinis überbrücken kann,
hatte sich schon auf dem letztjährigen
Filmball blitzschnell herumgesprochen.
Und auch dieses Jahr ließ der Ansturm
nicht lange auf sich warten. Kaum hatten
SPIO-Präsident Björn Böhning und
seine Frau Nancy der „geselligen“ Teil
des Abends mit dem Eröffnungstanz eingeläutet,
erklangen auch in der Memory
Box bereits die ersten Electro Beats von
DJ Tekto.
Direkt vor dem Studio, in einer gemütlichen
Lounge der Frauenzeitschrift Marie
Claire interviewten Chefredakteurin Nicola
Le Vourch und Verlagsleiterin Tess
Buchele die Stars des Abends, bevor sie
sich in der Memory Box auf einem Foto
verewigen ließen. Mit von der Partie:
der Coverstar der letzten Ausgabe von
INSIGHTS QUARTELY, Jella Haase, die
mit ihren besten Freunden unsere Memory
Box besuchte. Außerdem zu Gast:
die frisch prämierten Nachwuchstalente
Merle Grimme und Julius Gause sowie
Maja Bons, die zudem am Abend zuvor als
beste Newcomerin mit dem Bayerischen
Filmpreis ausgezeichnet worden war.
Viele illustre Gäste, eine gemütliche Atmosphäre
und ausgelassene Stimmung,
zufällige Begegnungen und entspannte
Gespräche machten die Memory Box zu
einer schönen Abwechslung zum großen
Filmball-Trubel. Und da der Weg in den
Palais Keller, wohin sich gegen Mitternacht
das Getümmel zum traditionellen
Weißwurstessen verlagerte, direkt an der
Memory Box vorbeiführte, nutzten auch
spät noch Gäste die Gelegenheit zum
Spontanbesuch. A night to remember!

The German Film Ball is one of the most
important social events in the Bavarian
capital and a fixed date in the annual
cultural calendar. This year, the leading
organisation of the film industry (SPIO)
invited filmmakers and celebrities from the
worlds of culture, media and politics to the
Bayerischer Hof for the 49th time.
After the last guests had made their way
from the red carpet into the ballroom at
around 8pm, the doors closed and the
evening began with a brilliant ceremony.
Behind the scenes, photographer Alexander
Courtman and his team were making the
final preparations for a very special „Photo
Op“ for all ball guests: the Memory Box in
the RIANI store.
Word had already spread in a flash at
last year‘s Film Ball that there is a place
where you can take away an unforgettable
memory and bridge the waiting time with
the finest electronic music and ice-cold
espresso martinis. And this year, too, the
rush was not long in coming. No sooner
had SPIO President Björn Böhning and his
wife Nancy kicked off the „social“ part of the
evening with the opening dance than the
first electro beats of DJ Tekto were already
playing in the Memory Box. Directly in
front of the studio, in a cosy lounge of the
women‘s magazine Marie Claire, editorin-chief
Nicola Le Vourch and publishing
director Tess Buchele interviewed the stars
of the evening before they had themselves
immortalised in a photo in the Memory
Box. Also in attendance: the cover star of
the last issue of INSIGHTS QUARTELY,
Jella Haase, who visited our Memory Box
with her best friends. Also in attendance:
the newly awarded young talents Merle
Grimme and Julius Gause as well as
Maja Bons, who had also been honoured
with the Bavarian Film Award for Best
Newcomer the evening before.
Many illustrious guests, a cosy atmosphere
and exuberant mood, chance encounters
and relaxed conversations made the
Memory Box a nice change from the hustle
and bustle of the big film ball. And as the
route to the Palais Keller, where the hustle
and bustle moved towards midnight for
the traditional veal sausage dinner, led
directly past the Memory Box, guests also
took the opportunity to pay a spontaneous
visit late at night.
INSIGHTS QUARTELY would like to take
this opportunity to thank its partners

well as SPIO and the entire team, without
whom this evening would not have been

Ihre Marke ist auf der ganzen Welt
bekannt, Menschen warten gerne bis
zu zwei Jahre auf eine handgefertigte
Hirschlederhose, Arnold Schwarzenegger
sagte mal, dass er ohne seine
Kleidungsstücke von Meindl nackt
wäre. Was ist Ihr Erfolgsrezept?
Wir stehen für traditionelles Handwerk
und gelebte Nachhaltigkeit. Hirschleder
ist von Natur aus ein Material mit begrenzten
Kapazitäten. Unsere Produkte
verschwinden nicht nach einer Saison
wieder aus dem Schrank, sondern können
auch den nächsten Generationen
noch viel Freude bereiten. Ich nenne
das ‚authentischen Luxus‘, weil er nicht
durch die Tür poltert, sondern leise und
diskret daherkommt.
Die Suche nach Beständigkeit ist in
unserer Gesellschaft allgegenwärtig.
Profitieren Sie von dieser Sehnsucht?
Ja, und es ist schön zu sehen, dass sich
Menschen auf alte Werte wie Ehrlichkeit,
Stabilität und Respekt vor der
Natur zurückbesinnen. Dennoch muss
man Dinge weiterentwickeln, weiterdrehen.
Nur dann hat die Tradition eine
Chance, auf Dauer zu überleben.
Wenn man Sie fragt, für wen Sie Ihre
Kollektionen entwerfen, dann fällt
immer wieder der Begriff „Gebirgsstädter“.
Was steckt dahinter?
Damit sind Menschen gemeint, die
sich sowohl auf dem Land und in den
Bergen als auch in der Stadt mühelos
bewegen, die sich nicht zwischen Tradi-

tion und Moderne entscheiden, sondern
beides leben. Denn sie lieben die
Kontraste. Genauso funktioniert auch
unsere Kleidung. Sie passt zu allen
Gelegenheiten: Auf dem Motorrad, im
Businessmeeting, bei der Alpenüberquerung
und in der Oper.
Wie das?
Jedes unserer Kleidungsstücke ist
stilvoll, gleichzeitig zeitlos und lässt
sich je nach Anlass kombinieren. Zum
Beispiel mit Canvas, Leinen, Wolle
oder Sneaker. Hirschleder ist außergewöhnlich
weich, widerstandsfähig und
passt sich dem Körper an. Es hält warm
bei Kälte und trocken bei Wärme oder
körperlicher Anstrengung, indem es
Feuchtigkeit gut aufnimmt und abgibt.
Und das Beste: Je länger man es trägt,
desto schöner wird es.
Es klingt fast so, als würden Sie über
einen guten Freund und nicht über
einen Stoff sprechen …
Ich bin passionierter Jäger. Für mich ist
Leder hochemotional. Denn jede Haut
erzählt ihre ganz eigene Geschichte.
Bis zu dem Moment, in dem das Wild
weidmännisch erlegt wird, lebt das Tier
in der Natur. Keine Lebendtransporte,
keine Antibiotika, keine Massentierhaltung.
Nur Freiheit.
Wie wird aus der Haut eines Hirsches
am Ende ein Rock oder eine Lederhose?
Unsere Gerbereien sammeln die Decken
der erlegten Tiere und verarbeiten
diese nach uralter Handwerkstradition.

nachhaltig und organisch, weil sie ohne
Chemikalien auskommt. Stattdessen
verwenden wir Fischtran. Es gibt nur
noch ganz wenige Betriebe, die das
Handwerk des sämischen Gerbens
beherrschen und auch ausüben. Der
Prozess dauert fast drei Monate und
erfordert sehr viel Erfahrung. Ein Fehler
kann die Arbeit von mehreren Wochen
zerstören.
Neben Kleidung gibt es mittlerweile
auch Möbel von Meindl. Wie kam es
dazu?
Ich habe sie zuerst für mich selbst entworfen
und gebaut. Daraus ist dann
eine ganze Kollektion aus Ledersesseln
und Sofas entstanden, die man kaufen
kann. Allerdings produzieren wir nur
auf Bestellung. Jedes Möbelstück ist ein
Unikat und wird in Hunderten Arbeitsschritten
von Hand gefertigt.
Sie probieren generell viel aus und
arbeitet unter anderem mit BMW und
der Schweizer Uhrenmarke Hublot zusammen.
Auf welche Kooperationen
sind Sie besonders stolz?
Jede unserer Partnerschaften ist bereichernd
und auf Augenhöhe. Besonders
am Herzen liegt mir aber ein Projekt,
dass wir gemeinsam mit BMW auf die
Beine gestellt haben. Dabei entstanden
die exklusiven Editionsmodelle BMW
X5 M Competition und BMW X6 M
Competition, bei denen der gesamte
Innenraum mit unserem Hirschleder
bezogen wurde. Carbon, die neuste
Technik und unsere Handwerkskunst –
genau die richtige Kombination für die
Gebirgsstädter.

Your brand is known all over the world,
people like to wait up to two years for
a pair of handmade deerskin trousers,
Arnold Schwarzenegger once said that
he would be naked without his Meindl
clothes. What is your recipe for success?
We stand for traditional craftsmanship
and sustainability. Deerskin is by nature
a material with limited capacities. Our
products don‘t disappear from the wardrobe
after one season, but can continue to
give pleasure to future generations. I call
this ‚authentic luxury‘ because it doesn‘t
bang through the door, but comes along
quietly and discreetly.
The search for permanence is omnipresent
in our society. Do you benefit from
this longing?
Yes, and it‘s nice to see people returning
to old values such as honesty, stability
and respect for nature. Nevertheless, you
have to develop things further, take them
further. Only then does tradition have a
chance of surviving in the long term.
When people ask you who you design
your collections for, the term „Gebirgstädter“
comes up again and again.
What does that mean?
It refers to people who move effortlessly in
the countryside and in the mountains as
well as in the city, who don‘t choose between
tradition and modernity, but live
both. Because they love contrasts. Our
clothing works in exactly the same way.
It suits all occasions: On a motorbike, at
a business meeting, crossing the Alps and
at the opera.
How comes?
Each of our garments is
stylish, timeless and can be
combined to suit the occasion.
For example with canvas,
linen, wool or trainers.
Deerskin is exceptionally soft,
durable and moulds to the
body. It keeps you warm in
the cold and dry in the heat
or during physical exertion
by absorbing and releasing
moisture well. And best of all,
the longer you wear it, the
more beautiful it becomes.

It almost sounds like you‘re talking about
a good friend rather than a fabric...
I‘m a passionate hunter. For me, leather
is highly emotional. Because every hide
tells its very own story. Until the moment
the game is hunted, the animal lives in
nature. No live transport, no antibiotics,
no factory farming. Only freedom.
How does the skin of a deer end up
being turned into a skirt or leather
trousers?
Our tanneries collect the skins of the
hunted animals and process them according
to age-old craft traditions. The
chamois tanning process is particularly
sustainable and organic because it does
not require any chemicals. Instead, we
use fish oil. There are only very few companies
that still master and practise the
craft of chamois tanning. The process
takes almost three months and requires a
great deal of experience. One mistake can
destroy several weeks‘ work.
In addition to clothing, Meindl now
also produces furniture. How did that
come about?
I first designed and built it for myself. This
then developed into a whole collection of
leather armchairs and sofas that you can
buy. However, we only produce to order.
Each piece of furniture is unique and is
made by hand in hundreds of steps. You
generally try out a lot and work together
with Porsche and the Swiss watch brand
Hublot, among others.
Which collaborations are you particularly
proud of?
Each of our partnerships is enriching and
on an equal footing. One project that is
particularly close to my heart, however,
is one that we set up together with BMW.
This resulted in the exclusive BMW X5 M
Competition and BMW X6 M Competition
edition models, in which the entire
interior was covered with our deerskin.
Carbon fibre, the latest technology and
our craftsmanship - just the right combination
for the mountain townsfolk.

Wir jonglieren zwischen Job, Familie,
sozialen Verpflichtungen und finden im
Alltag nur schwer echte Ruhe und Entspannung.
Deshalb braucht es manchmal
eine Auszeit. Schon Seneca sagte:
„Es ist nicht wenig Zeit, die wir haben,
sondern es ist viel Zeit, die wir nicht
nutzen.“ Also nutzen wir sie doch für
unser wichtigstes Gut: unsere Gesundheit
– am besten in einem schönen Hotel
wie dem Bayerischen Hof.
Ein Forschungsteam der australischen
Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth
fand nämlich kürzlich heraus: Fühlt
man sich auf Reisen rundum wohl, profitiert
auch die Gesundheit – und das
kann lebensverlängernd wirken. Die
interdisziplinäre Studie wurde im Fachmagazin
„Journal of Travel Research“
veröffentlicht und analysierte die negativen
und positiven Einflüsse von
Reisen auf Körper und Psyche sowie soziologische
Faktoren. Wer an neue Orte
reise, schreiben die Forschenden in der
Studie, kurbele seinen Stoffwechsel an;
gegen chronischen Stress hingegen, eigneten
sich beruhigendere Aktivitäten.
Was darf es sein: Sauna, Yoga, eine Wellness-Behandlung
im Blue Spa? Schon
eine zehnminütige Massage (im Blue
Spa dauern sie natürlich länger) könne
die körperliche und mentale Gesundheit
positiv beeinflussen, besagt eine
Studie von Psychologinnen und Psychologen
der Universität Konstanz. Und
auch der Tapetenwechsel an sich wirkt
oft bereits Wunder – erst recht, wenn
die neue Umgebung so luxuriös und
entspannend ist, wie die Zimmer und
Suiten im Bayerischen Hof. Das veränderte
Umfeld und die Freiheit, sich

YOUR HEALTH
We juggle our jobs, families and social
commitments and find it difficult to find
real peace and relaxation in everyday
life. That’s why we sometimes need some
time out. Seneca once said: “It is not a
little time that we have, but a lot of time
that we don’t use.” So let’s use it for our
most important asset: our health - preferably

A research team from Australia’s Edith
Cowan University (ECU) in Perth recently
discovered that if you feel completely
at ease when travelling, your health also
benefits - and this can have a life-prolonging
effect. The interdisciplinary study
was published in the “Journal of Travel
Research” and analysed the negative and
positive influences of travel on the body
and mind as well as sociological factors.
The researchers write in the study that
travelling to new places boosts the metabolism,
while more calming activities
are suitable for combating chronic stress.
According to a study by psychologists
at the University of Konstanz, even a
ten-minute massage (they last longer at
the Blue Spa, of course) can have a positive
effect on physical and mental health.
And a change of scenery often works
wonders in itself - especially when the
new surroundings are as luxurious and
relaxing as the rooms and suites at the
Bayerischer Hof. The change of environment
and the freedom of not having to
worry about everyday life, the delicious

like balm for the soul - and lighten the

peace. I’ll send you cash in a suitcase every day. You’ll send that
back once, twice, maybe a third time. But I’ll send you more every
day. At some point you’ll be so worn down and so exhausted, and
the temptation will be so great that you’ll take it. And then I’ll have
you, you’ll belong to me. Then you’ll be my lackey. I’ll be too much
for you. You don’t stand a chance against my money. I just want to
be your friend – and now call me Heini.’ “A classic for Mario Adorf,”
said Helmut Dietl (photo, left) about this brilliant scene at the pool,
in which CEO Heinrich Haffenloher (Mario Adorf, photo, right)

(Franz Xaver Kroetz) ein unmoralisches Angebot macht. Sie ist eine
der vielen Szenen in dieser legendären Fernsehserie aus den Achtzigern,
die im Bayerischen Hof gedreht wurden. Und das nicht zufällig.
Schon in seiner Jugend war der spätere Kult-Regisseur Dietl vom
Hotelleben fasziniert, besonders aber vom Bayerischen Hof. „Ich
habe vor den Toren der Stadt gewohnt, in Laim, bei meiner Oma,
und dann in Gräfelfing. Ziemlich spät, so mit 14, 15, bin ich mit meiner
Mutter in die Stadt gekommen, nach Schwabing. Da war ich das
erste Mal im Bayerischen Hof. Aber nicht drin, das habe ich mich
nicht getraut, sondern davor, ich habe ihn nur angeschaut. Das war
für mich so was Ähnliches wie Schloss Nymphenburg, grandios.“

1980s TV series that were shot at the Bayerischer Hof. And not by
chance. Even as a young man, the later cult director Dietl was fascinated
by hotel life, but especially by the Bayerischer Hof. ‘I lived just
outside the city, in Laim, with my grandmother, and then in Gräfelfing.
It was quite late, around 14 or 15, that I came to the city with
my mother, to Schwabing. That was when I was at the Bayerischer
Hof for the first time. But not inside, I didn’t dare to do that, but just
outside, just looking at it. For me, it was something like Nymphenburg
Palace, magnificent.’
