Liebe Freunde der Chormusik,
herzlich willkommen zum 16. Internationalen
Chorwettbewerb & Festival Bad
Ischl 2026. In einer Stadt mit großer musikalischer
Tradition begegnen sich heute
Chöre aus aller Welt und schreiben die
Geschichte in lebendiger Form fort.
In diesem Jahr begrüßen wir 20 Chöre aus
13 Nationen – Stimmen, die die kulturelle
Vielfalt unserer Zeit hörbar machen. Sie
treten an Orten auf, die seit Generationen
von Musik geprägt sind und heute erneut
Raum für künstlerischen Ausdruck und
internationale Begegnung bieten.
Die Wettbewerbe und Konzerte in den
kommenden Tagen tragen diese Idee
weiter in die öffentlichen Räume der Stadt.
So wird Bad Ischl erneut zur Bühne der
Begegnung und Musik – ganz im Sinne des
INTERKULTUR Mottos „Singing together
brings nations together“.
Eine besondere Facette dieses Festivals
bildet der 1. Mai: Im Kaiserpark und im
Marmorschlössl sind alle teilnehmenden
Chöre eingeladen zu singen und die
dort gezeigte Kunstausstellung von Jakob
Lena Knebl musikalisch zu bereichern. So
entsteht ein Dialog zwischen Musik und
bildender Kunst, der die kulturelle Tradition
Bad Ischls aktiv fortführt.
Ich möchte auf diesem Weg erneut allen
Unterstützern und Sponsoren, Partnern
und Gastgebern meinen herzlichsten Dank
für die langjährige Zusammenarbeit und
Unterstützung aussprechen, die dieses
Festival immer wieder zu einem besonderen
Erlebnis machen. Ganz besonderer

Dear friends of choral music,
Welcome to the 16 th International Choir
Competition & Festival Bad Ischl 2026. In a
city with a rich musical tradition, choirs from
all over the world come together today and
carry this history forward in a vibrant and
living form.
This year, we are pleased to welcome 20
choirs from 13 nations – voices that make the
cultural diversity of our time audible. They
perform in places shaped by generations of
music, offering space once again for artistic
expression and international encounter.
The competitions and concerts in the
coming days bring this idea into the public
spaces of the city. As a result, Bad Ischl
once again becomes a stage for music and
international encounters – in the spirit of
the INTERKULTUR motto “Singing together
brings nations together.”
A special facet of this festival is May 1: in
the Kaiserpark and at the Marmorschlössl,
all participating choirs are invited to sing
and to enrich the art exhibition by Jakob
Lena Knebl with their music. In this way,
a dialogue between music and visual art
emerges, continuing Bad Ischl’s cultural
tradition in an active and contemporary way.
I would like to express my sincere thanks

hosts for their long-standing cooperation
and commitment, which make this festival
such a special experience time and time

Mit seinem besonderen Charme öffnet sich
Bad Ischl auch heuer wieder als ein besonderer
Raum für Stimmen aller Couleur:
Der 16. Internationale Chorwettbewerb &
Festival trägt die Tradition der Chormusik
weiter in die Gegenwart und verbindet
Menschen aus verschiedenen Kulturen
und musikalischen Welten zu einem gemeinsamen
Klangerlebnis. 20 Chöre aus
13 Ländern kommen nach Bad Ischl, um
ihr Können zu zeigen. Wo Stimmen aus
vielen Teilen der Welt zusammenkommen,
entsteht mehr als ein Wettbewerb – es wird
zu einer Klangreise, getragen von der universellen
Sehnsucht nach Harmonie und
Gemeinschaft.
.Bad Ischl bietet dafür die ideale Bühne.
Die Stadt, tief verwurzelt in Musik und Kultur,
verleiht dem Festival eine besondere
Atmosphäre von Herzlichkeit und Offenheit.
Die prachtvolle Kulisse des Salzkammerguts
und die historische Architektur
schaffen eine besondere Atmosphäre. Hier
wird jeder Auftritt zu einer Begegnung –
mit dem Publikum, mit anderen Ensembles
und mit Bad Ischl selbst.
Im Wettbewerb treten Chöre aus unterschiedlichen
Sprachräumen und musikalischen
Traditionen an. Diese Vielfalt
eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf vertraute
musikalische Formen und lässt zu, dass
Chorkunst ständig neu gedacht wird. Darüber
hinaus verbindet alle Teilnehmenden
eines Chorwettbewerbs die Liebe zur Stimme
und der Mut, sich mit Leidenschaft,
Transparenz und Freude dem Publikum zu
öffnen. Die Begegnungen hinter und vor
den Kulissen schaffen Netzwerke, die über
die Festivalzeit hinaus wirken. So entsteht
eine lebendige Gemeinschaft, die Grenzen
überwinden hilft und den kulturellen Austausch
stärkt. Die Vielfalt der Programme
und die Qualität der Ensembleleistungen
tragen dazu bei, das hohe Anspruchsniveau
mit einer positiven Atmosphäre zu verbinden.

With its distinctive charm, Bad Ischl once
again opens itself this year as a unique space
for voices of all kinds: the 16th International
Choir Competition & Festival carries the
tradition of choral music into the present
and unites people from different cultures
and musical worlds in a shared sound
experience. Twenty choirs from thirteen
countries come to Bad Ischl to showcase
their skills. Wherever voices from many
parts of the world come together, more than
just a competition emerges – it becomes a
musical journey shaped by the universal
longing for harmony and community.
Bad Ischl provides the ideal stage for this.
The city, deeply rooted in music and culture,
lends the festival a special atmosphere of
warmth and openness. The magnificent
scenery of the Salzkammergut and the
historic architecture create a unique
ambience. Here, every performance
becomes an encounter – with the audience,
with other ensembles, and with Bad Ischl
itself.
In the competition, choirs from different
linguistic backgrounds and musical
traditions come together. This diversity opens
up new perspectives on familiar musical
forms and allows choral art to be reimagined
again and again. Moreover, all participants in
a choir competition are united by their love
for the voice and their courage to present
themselves to the audience with passion,
openness, and joy. Encounters both behind
the scenes and on stage create networks that
extend far beyond the duration of the festival.
In this way, a vibrant community emerges–
one that helps to overcome boundaries and
strengthens cultural exchange.
The diversity of the programs and the quality
of the ensemble performances contribute
to combining high artistic standards with a
welcoming atmosphere.

Mit großer Freude darf ich Sie zum internationalen
Chorwettbewerb 2026 in Bad
Ischl willkommen heißen. Vom 29. April
bis 3. Mai wird unsere Stadt erneut zum
Treffpunkt der internationalen Chorszene
und zum Schauplatz musikalischer Begegnungen
auf höchstem Niveau.
13 Ensembles aus 20 Nationen treten in
insgesamt 9 Kategorien gegeneinander
an und bringen dabei die beeindruckende
Vielfalt der Chormusik zum Ausdruck. Bad
Ischl, geprägt von seiner lebendigen Kultur
und seiner einzigartigen Atmosphäre,
bietet dafür den idealen Rahmen.
Der Chorwettbewerb steht nicht nur für
künstlerische Exzellenz, sondern auch für
gelebte Gemeinschaft und internationalen
Austausch. Musik verbindet Menschen
über Grenzen hinweg – sie schafft Verständnis,
weckt Emotionen und lässt uns
die Welt aus neuen Perspektiven erleben.
Gerade in einer Zeit, in der Zusammenhalt
und Dialog besonders wichtig sind, setzt
die Chormusik ein starkes Zeichen für Miteinander
und Offenheit.
Mein herzlicher Dank gilt allen Sängerinnen
und Sängern, die mit ihrem Engagement
und ihrer Leidenschaft dieses Ereignis

to the International Choir Competition 2026
in Bad Ischl. From April 29 th to May 3 rd , our
town will once again become a meeting
place for the international choral scene and
a stage for musical encounters of the highest
caliber.
13 ensembles from 20 nations will compete
across a total of 9 categories, showcasing
the remarkable diversity of choral music.
Bad Ischl, with its vibrant cultural life and
unique atmosphere, provides the perfect
setting for this celebration.
The choir competition stands not only
for artistic excellence but also for
community and international exchange.
Music connects people across borders – it
fosters understanding, evokes emotion,
and allows us to experience the world from
new perspectives. In a time when solidarity
and dialogue are more important than ever,
choral music sends a powerful message of
togetherness and openness.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to
all the singers, whose dedication and passion
enrich this event. My gratitude also goes to
the organizers, supporters, and volunteers,
whose tireless efforts ensure its success.

Mehr als 35 Jahre erfolgreich: Seit 1988 ist INTERKULTUR, gegründet von Günter
Titsch, der weltweit größte Veranstalter internationaler Chorwettbewerbe und -festivals.
Durch das hohe künstlerische und organisatorische Niveau sind die Events mittlerweile
in der ganzen Welt bekannt. INTERKULTUR ist zu einem Begriff in der Welt der Chöre
geworden und die Begeisterung rund um die internationalen Wettbewerbe und Festivals
wächst.
Seit mehr als 35 Jahren feiern Sänger, Sängerinnen und Chöre aus aller Welt
mit INTERKULTUR die internationale Chormusik in verschiedenen Städten und
auf verschiedenen Kontinenten. Sei es im Palau de la Música in Barcelona oder
im Konzerthaus Liebfrauen Wernigerode, an Traumzielen in Europa oder Asien:
Überall erleben die Teilnehmenden ein friedliches, weltumspannendes Fest voller
Gesang und interkultureller Chormusik auf einem hohen künstlerischen Niveau.
Freundschaftskonzerte und gemeinsames Singen verstärken die große emotionale
Wirkung der internationalen Chortreffen von INTERKULTUR.
INTERKULTUR verbindet Nationen. In den Jahren 2004 und 2006 ist es der Organisation
nach langwierigen Verhandlungen gelungen, Chöre aus Süd- und Nordkorea gemeinsam
auf eine Bühne zu bringen. Auch Chöre aus Ländern wie Israel und dem Iran standen bei
den Chorfestivals immer wieder nebeneinander und setzen in Freundschaftskonzerten
ein Zeichen für den Frieden.
Teilnahme ist die höchste Ehre. Der bislang größte Erfolg von INTERKULTUR war
es, die Olympische Idee der Völkerverständigung und Toleranz auf die Chormusik
zu übertragen. Die Chorolympiade 2000 in Linz (Österreich) war der Beginn einer
chorolympischen Bewegung, die bis heute um die Welt geht: Ihre Erfolgsgeschichte
setzte sich 2002 in Busan (Korea), 2004 in Bremen, und ab 2006 unter dem Namen World
Choir Games in Xiamen (China), 2008 in Graz (Österreich), 2010 in Shaoxing (China) und
2012 in Cincinnati (USA), 2014 in Riga (Lettland) und 2016 in der olympischen Stadt Sochi
in Russland fort. Die 10. World Choir Games 2018 fanden erstmals auf dem afrikanischen
Kontinent statt: Tshwane in Südafrika war Gastgeberstadt für mehr als 300 Chöre und
mehr als 16 000 Teilnehmende. Aufgrund der weltweiten COVID-19-Pandemie musste
die 11. Ausgabe der World Choir Games, die von den Städten Antwerpen und Gent in
Belgien ausgerichtet wurde, von Juli 2020 in den Herbst 2021 verschoben werden.
Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte der Veranstaltung fanden diese Spiele als hybride
Veranstaltung mit Live-Wettbewerben in Flandern und einem zusätzlichen Teil mit
virtuellen Wettbewerben statt. Die 12. World Choir Games luden Chöre aus aller Welt
nach Gangneung, Republik Korea ein und im Juli 2024 trafen sich Chöre aus aller Welt
zu den World Choir Games 2024 erstmals auf dem ozeanischen Kontinent: in Auckland,
New Zealand. Die nächsten World Choir Games finden im August 2026 in Helsingborg,
Schweden statt.

Seit 2007 überträgt INTERKULTUR die Idee der World Choir Games immer wieder
auch auf einzelne Kontinente: Die Asia Pacific Choir Games fanden im Oktober 2017
schon zum vierten Mal statt, 2025 wurden die African Asia Pacific Choir Games auf der
Trauminsel Mauritius ausgetragen. Die European Choir Games feierten 2013 in Graz
(Österreich) Premiere. Diese europäische Version der World Choir Games fand seither
in Magdeburg (Deutschland, 2015), Riga (Lettland, 2017) Göteborg (Schweden, 2019)
und in Norrköping (Schweden, 2023) statt – jeweils zusammen mit dem „Grand Prix of
Nations“, der sich an erstklassige internationale Chöre richtet. Im Sommer 2025 trafen
sich Chöre zu den 6. European Choir Games & Grand Prix of Nations im dänischen
Aarhus.
Die Idee
INTERKULTUR ist zum Symbol für eine einzigartige künstlerische Idee geworden:
Während sich bei traditionellen Chorwettbewerben nur Chöre vergleichen, die zur
internationalen Spitzenklasse gehören, stehen die INTERKULTUR–Veranstaltungen
allen Chören unabhängig von ihrer bisherigen Wettbewerbserfahrung offen. Alle Chöre
der Welt können sich im Wettbewerb entsprechend ihres Leistungsstandes vergleichen.
Mit der Idee der World Choir Games hat es INTERKULTUR geschafft, der nationalen und
internationalen Chorszene neue Impulse und Perspektiven zu geben.
Die Wettbewerbe
Es gibt verschiedene Kategorien für alle Arten von Chören in unterschiedlichen
Schwierigkeitsgraden, mit und ohne Pflichtstück. Sie bieten eine einzigartige
Atmosphäre, gute Wettbewerbsbedingungen, intensive künstlerische Kontakte,
unterschiedliche Beratungsprogramme und Workshops, sowie Praxis mit internationalen
Kunstschaffenden. Mehr als 200 Expert*innen und führende Chorleitende aus der
ganzen Welt gewährleisten bei allen INTERKULTUR-Veranstaltungen ein hohes Maß an
Kompetenz.
Das Wertungssystem
Die Jury vergibt bei den kleineren INTERKULTUR-Wettbewerben Goldene, Silberne
und Bronzene Diplome in 10 Stufen nach dem MUSICA MUNDI ® Bewertungssystem
(30-Punkte-System) sowie Bronzene, Silberne oder Goldene Medaillen bei den World
Choir Games, den Asia Pacific Choir Games, den European Choir Games und dem Grand
Prix of Nations nach dem Bewertungssystem der World Choir Games (100-Punkte-
System). In jeder Kategorie gibt es einen Siegerchor oder Champion, zudem werden
herausragende Leistungen mit Sonderpreisen geehrt. In einigen Wettbewerben wird
zusätzlich um den Gesamtsieg der Veranstaltung gesungen, den sogenannten Großpreis.
Das pädagogische Konzept
Die INTERKULTUR-Veranstaltungen sind nicht nur Wettbewerbe und internationale
Chortreffen, sondern stehen auch für fachliche Kompetenz durch zahlreiche
pädagogische Angebote, die für eine nachhaltige Wirkung bei den teilnehmenden Chören

sorgen. So können sich Chöre beispielsweise in Beratungsrunden vor dem Wettbewerb
und in intensiven Gesprächen mit der internationalen Jury wertvolle Hinweise zu ihrem
derzeitigen Leistungsstand geben lassen und Ratschläge zur Interpretation bekommen.
Mit der MUSICA MUNDI ® -Chorakademie gibt INTERKULTUR der jungen Chorleiterszene
neue Impulse, insbesondere in China.
Alle zwei Jahre tagt während der World Choir Games das World Choir Council,
bestehend aus 146 Chorfachleuten aus 96 Ländern und Regionen, tauscht sich über
die Chorlandschaft in ihrer Heimat aus und leistet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur
Weiterentwicklung der internationalen Chorszene.
Die Wettbewerbs- und Festivalorte
Die Veranstaltungen von INTERKULTUR fanden bisher in folgenden Ländern statt:
Belgien, Dänemark, Deutschland, Frankreich, Griechenland, Großbritannien, Indonesien,
Israel, Italien, Japan, Kambodscha, Kroatien, Lettland, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius,
Neuseeland, Niederlande, Österreich, Portugal, Philippinen, Russland, Schweden,
Serbien, Spanien, Sri Lanka, Südafrika, Südkorea, Thailand, Tschechische Republik,
Ungarn, USA, Vietnam und in der Volksrepublik China. 2026 organisiert INTERKULTUR
zum ersten Mal einen internationalen Chorwettbewerb in Finnland, 2027 geht es erstmals
nach Bulgarien. Zahlreiche Städte lassen sich immer wieder vom Erfolg der INTER-
KULTUR-Idee überzeugen und etablieren ein regelmäßiges Chorfestival oder bewerben
sich wiederholt für die Austragung einer völkerverbindenden Großveranstaltung.
Die Teilnehmerchöre
Über 11.000 Chöre mit mehr als 460.000 aktiven Sängerinnen und Sängern aus 112
Ländern haben bisher an den INTERKULTUR-Wettbewerben teilgenommen. Mehr
als die Hälfte der Teilnehmenden sind junge Menschen unter 27 Jahren. 67 % der
teilnehmenden Chöre sind wiederkehrende Ensembles auf der Suche nach neuen
Herausforderungen und Destinationen. Oft steigern sie ihre Leistung dabei von kleinen
Erfolgen bis zur großen Goldmedaille und dem ersehnten Champions-Titel.
Die Fördermöglichkeiten
Gemäß seiner Satzung unterstützt der Förderverein INTERKULTUR e.V. folgende
Aktivitäten und Gruppierungen:

More than 35 years of success: Since 1988 INTERKULTUR, founded by Günter Titsch,
is the world’s leading organizer of international choir competitions and festivals. The
event series has meanwhile become known throughout the world for its high artistic and
organizational standards. INTERKULTUR is a concept for choirs all over the world and
their excitement about its competitions and festivals is constantly growing.
Since more than 35 years singers and choirs from all over the world have been
celebrating international choral music with INTERKULTUR in different cities and on
different continents. Whether the Palau de la Música in Barcelona or the Konzerthaus
Liebfrauen Wernigerode, whether dream destinations in Europea or Asia; wherever
they go, participants will experience a peaceful, world-spanning festival of singing and
intercultural choral music on a high artistic level. Friendship Concerts and joint singing
events complete the great emotional impact of INTERKULTUR’s international choral
meetings.
INTERKULTUR unites nations. In 2004 and 2006 – following long negotiations – the
organization was able to bring choirs from North and South Korea together on stage.
Also, choirs from countries like Israel and Iran kept coming together at the choir
festivals and light a beacon of peace in Friendship Concerts.
Participation is the highest honor. INTERKULTUR´s biggest success to date was to bring
the antique Olympic idea to the choral community. The Choir Olympics 2000 in Linz,
Austria was the beginning of a Choir Olympic movement, which goes around the world
until today: Its story of success continues with subsequent events in Busan, Republic of
Korea in 2002 and Bremen, Germany in 2004, and as of 2006 under the name “World Choir
Games” in Xiamen, China; Graz, Austria in 2008; Shaoxing, China in 2010; Cincinnati,
USA in 2012; Riga, Latvia in 2014 and the Winter Olympics City of Sochi, Russia in 2016.
The 10 th anniversary edition of the World Choir Games in 2018 happened on African soil
for the first time: Tshwane in South Africa attracted more than 300 choirs and more
than 16,000 participants in July 2018. Due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic the 11 th
edition of the World Choir Games hosted by the cities of Antwerp and Ghent in Belgium
had to be postponed from July 2020 to the fall 2021. For the first time in the event’s
history these Games took place as a hybrid event with live competitions in Flanders and
an additional Virtual Competitions part. The 12 th edition of the event invited choirs from
around the world to Gangneung, Republic of Korea in summer 2023, while the 13 th World
Choir Games happened in Oceania for the first time: in Auckland, New Zealand. The next
World Choir Games will take place in Helsingborg, Sweden in August 2026.
Since 2007 INTERKULTUR has been transferring the idea of the World Choir Games also
to different continents: The Asia Pacific Choir Games took place for the 4 th time already
in October 2017, and in 2025 the first African Asia Pacific Choir Games were held on the
dream island Mauritius. In 2013 the European Choir Games premiered in Graz, Austria.
Subsequent editions of the event were held in Magdeburg, Germany (2015), in Latvian
capital Riga (2017) and in the Swedish cities of Gothenburg (2019) and Norrköping (2023),

along with the Grand Prix of Nations, which addresses international top choirs. The
most recent edition of the European Choir Games & Grand Prix of Nations took place in
Aarhus, Denmark in July 2025.
The Idea
INTERKULTUR has become the symbol for a unique artistic idea: In comparison to
traditional meritorious choir competitions that only invite international elite choirs
to take part, the INTERKULTUR competitions are open to all non-professional choirs.
Choirs from all over the world, interested in gaining international festival and competition
experience, can compete according to their level of artistic achievement. INTERKULTUR
has opened a door to new impulses and perspectives for the national and international
choral movement.
The Competitions
There are various categories for all types and levels of choirs in different degrees of
difficulty, with or without compulsory pieces. The competitions offer good, competitive
conditions, valuable, artistic contacts, various workshops and seminars, as well as
practice opportunities with international performers. More than 200 experts and
leading choir conductors from all over the world guarantee a high level of expertise in
all INTERKULTUR events.
Evaluation System
The jury awards Bronze, Silver, and Gold Diplomas on 10 levels at INTERKULTUR
competitions according to the MUSICA MUNDI ® evaluation system (30-points-system);
and Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals at the World Choir Games, the Asia Pacific Choir
Games, the European Choir Games and the Grand Prix of Nations according to the World
Choir Games evaluation system (100-points-system). In each category, a Winner or
Champion is determined and outstanding achievements are honored with Special Prizes.
In some competitions there is a Grand Prize Competition of the best choirs selected by
the international jury which determines the overall winner of the competition.
The Pedagogical Concept
INTERKULTUR events are not only competitions and international choir festivals,
but also serve as professional development such as providing feedback from various
pedagogical offerings. In Evaluation Performances or Individual Coachings, choirs have
the chance to work with international jury members and gain advice on their current
level of achievement, receive proficient pedagogical and artistic information and obtain
suggestions as to how to interpret the chosen piece. The MUSICA MUNDI ® Choir
Academy gives new impetus especially to young choir conductors in China.
Every two years the World Choir Council consisting of currently 146 members
representing 96 countries and regions comes together during the World Choir Games to
discuss the choral scenes in their respective home countries. These meetings make an
important contribution to the development of the international choral scene.

Locations of Festivals and Competitions
To date, INTERKULTUR events have taken place in Austria, Belgium, Cambodia,
Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary,
Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Netherlands, New
Zealand, People’s Republic of China, South Africa, Portugal, Philippines, Republic of
Korea, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, USA and Vietnam. In 2026
INTERKULTUR will organize its first-ever international choir competition in Finland,
while in 2027 a first event will be held in Bulgarien. Many cities have been convinced
of the success of INTERKULTUR events and establish regular choir festivals or apply
repeatedly to host more unifying major events.
The Participants
In total, more than 11,000 choirs with more than 460,000 active singers from 112
countries have taken part in the INTERKULTUR competitions to date. An interesting note
is that more than half of the participants have been children and youth up to 27 years
of age and 67% of the participating choirs are returning ensembles looking forward
to new destinations and new choral challenges. Many of them constantly increase
their achievements – from first little successes to a Gold Medal or the sought-after
Champions title.
Means of Support
In accordance with its statutes, INTERKULTUR supports the following activities:
• International music festivals and choir competitions whose goal is to bring together
choirs from different regions of the world and encourage international collaboration
through mutual respect, as well as to contribute to cultural exchange and
understanding among nations
• Children and youth choirs even from financially challenged countries
• Non-professional choirs that focus on the growth of youth development
• Young, talented conductors, young musicians and singers through the support of
scholarship awards
• Specific sponsorship opportunities

Den zeitlosen Reiz gleich wie das Wesen der Sommerfrische kann man nirgendwo besser
erkunden als hier - wo die Sommerfrische in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entstand
und bis heute erfolgreich weiterentwickelt wurde. Die Sommerresidenz von Kaiser Franz
Joseph hat erkennbar Spuren hinterlassen: Von der Trinkhalle über das ehemalige
Kurhaus bis zum heutigen Museum der Stadt, wo sich der junge Kaiser mit Sisi, der
späteren Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich und Ungarn verlobte. Authentische Einblicke in
diese Epoche bieten u.a. die Kaiservilla im gleichnamigen Park oder die ehemalige k.u.k.
Hofzuckerbäckerei Zauner.
When setting out for the timeless charm and true nature of an authentic summer
health resort – Bad Ischl is the place to be. It is the place where the original concept of the
summer health resort was born in the mid-nineteenth century and still to this day, has been
further developed to great success. What started as a summer residence commissioned
by Emperor Franz Joseph I, has left its impressive marks and traces all over town: The
Trinkhalle building (pump room of the original spa), the former Kurhaus (spa house), and the
site of today’s Bad Ischl Town Museum, where the young Emperor got engaged to Elisabeth
(nicknamed Sisi), who would later become the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary.
For authentic insights into this era, come and visit some of these fascinating places like the
Kaiservilla located inside a park of the same name or the Zauner confectionary, purveyor to
the former imperial household.

Die Eröffnung der ersten „Badestube“ 1823 ebnete den Aufstieg Ischls zum führenden
Kurort in Europa. Erzherzogin Sophie von Bayern ließ sich in Ischl mit Sole-Kuren gegen
Unfruchtbarkeit behandeln und brachte anschließend die vier „Salzprinzen“ zur Welt
- als ersten den späteren Kaiser Franz Joseph. Dieser verlobte sich 1853 im heutigen
Museum der Stadt mit der 16-jährigen bayerischen Herzogin Sisi. Als Hochzeitsgeschenk
für ihren ersten Sohn ließ Erzherzogin Sophie von Bayern die Kaiservilla bauen, 66
Jahre Sommerresidenz der kaiserlichen Familie und jener Ort, an dem 1914 mit der
Unterzeichnung des „Manifests an meine Völker“ der erste Weltkrieg ausgelöst wurde.
Franz Lehár lebte und komponierte in Bad Ischl, das Lehár Festival gilt als führend in ganz
Europa. Johann Nestroy arbeitete ebenfalls hier in seiner eigenen Villa, genauso wie Anton
Bruckner.
The opening of the first “Badestube“ (public bath) in 1823 paved the way for the rise of Bad
Ischl to become the leading spa in Europe. Archduchess Sophie of Bavaria visited Ischl several
times to receive brine cures to treat her infertility, eventually resulting in her giving birth to
the four ”Salt Princes“. The eldest of her children, Franz Joseph, who later became Emperor
of Austria, became engaged to sixteen-year-old Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria (called “Sisi”),
in 1853, using what now houses the Bad Ischl Town Museum as a prestigious setting for
the engagement ceremony. As a wedding gift for her first-born son, Archduchess Sophie of
Bavaria had the Kaiservilla built, which continued to serve as the summer residence for the
imperial family for a total of 66 years. In 1914 this place was chosen for the signing of the
manifesto “To my peoples”, the declaration that was to mark the unleashing of World War I.
Among the famous persons who came to live and work in this town, there were Franz Lehár,
the composer and namesake of the continentally acclaimed Lehár Festival in Bad Ischl, as
well as singer, actor and playwright, Johann Nestroy - who also worked here at his own
mansion - and composer Anton Bruckner. who also worked here at his own mansion, and
composer Anton Bruckner.

Für ein angenehmes Urlaubsklima sorgt u.a. die nebelfreie Lage auf 468 Meter Seehöhe
mit subalpinem Heilklima auf einer Fläche von 163 km², davon sind 72 % bewaldet.
Immerhin wurde vor 200 Jahren Ischler Luft in Glasgefäßen exportiert und in europäischen
Adelshäusern zur „Luftverbesserung“ eingesetzt.
The town’s geographical position 468 meters above sea level provides for healthy subalpine
climate conditions without fog, making Bad Ischl an ideal holiday resort that spreads over
a total area of 163 square kilometers, of which 72 % are forested. About 200 years ago in
fact, the air of this region was even commercially captured in glass vessels and exported to
numerous houses of European aristocrats where it was used as “air improver”.

What used to be suitable for the royal family of the Habsburgs may only be considered a
proven recipe for the visitors still coming to the imperial town to this day to spend a pleasant
vacation time: clean mountain air, mild yet stimulating climate on 468 meters above sea
level, the Bad Ischl Thermal Spa resort with its wide range of brine (bath) applications, as
well as the state-of-the-art infrastructure of a modern town that offers an abundance of
cultural highlights and attracts visitors from all over the region. The city itself is a perfect
starting point for trips to fascinating tourist attractions nearby: The World Cultural Heritage
site of Hallstatt, the town of St. Wolfgang on the waterfront of the lake of the same name, the

Prof. Romāns Vanags ist einer der führenden
lettischen Chorleiter und Pädagogen.
Er studierte Chor- und Orchesterdirigieren
an der Jāzeps Vītols Musikakademie
in Riga, wo er seit 1987 Chordirigieren
unterrichtet, später Professor wurde und
von 2005 bis 2012 den Fachbereich Dirigieren
leitete. Seit 1987 leitet er den Knabenchor
der Jāzeps Mediņš Musikschule Riga,
seit 1990 ist er Künstlerischer Leiter und
Chefdirigent des Frauenchores Minjona
der Universität Lettlands und prägt
seither maßgeblich die Chorlandschaft
des Landes. Er ist Mitglied des INTER-
KULTUR World Choir Council und seit 2014
Künstlerischer Leiter bei INTERKULTUR.
In dieser Funktion verantwortete er die
World Choir Games in Riga sowie weitere
Ausgaben in Antwerpen & Gent, Pyeongchang
und Auckland. 2026 gehört er erneut
dem Künstlerischen Leitungsgremium der
World Choir Games in Helsingborg an. Für
sein langjähriges Wirken erhielt er zahlreiche
Auszeichnungen, darunter den
höchsten lettischen Staatsorden, den Drei-
Sterne-Orden.
Prof. Romāns Vanags is one of Latvia’s
leading choral conductors and educators.
He studied choral and orchestral
conducting at the Jāzeps Vītols Academy of
Music in Riga, where he has taught choral
conducting since 1987, later becoming a
professor, and from 2005 to 2012 served as
Head of the Conducting Department. Since
1987 he has directed the Boys’ Choir of the
Jāzeps Mediņš Music School Riga, and since
1990 he has been the Artistic Director and
Principal Conductor of the women’s choir
Minjona at the University of Latvia, shaping
the nation’s choral life for decades. He is a
member of the INTERKULTUR World Choir
Council and has served as Artistic Director
at INTERKULTUR since 2014. In this role,
he oversaw the World Choir Games in Riga
and further editions in Antwerp & Ghent,
Pyeongchang and Auckland. In 2026 he will
again join the Artistic Directors Board of
the World Choir Games in Helsingborg. His
achievements have earned him numerous
honors, including Latvia’s highest state
award, the Order of the Three Stars.

Die österreichische Dirigentin Agnes
Schnabl verbindet eine vielseitige internationale
Tätigkeit als Chorleiterin, Pädagogin
und Dozentin. Seit 2021 unterrichtet
sie Dirigieren und Chor an der Universität
für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien.
Sie leitet mehrere Ensembles, darunter
den Jugendchor Österreich, den Tiroler
Landesjugendchor, ensemble kanti (Graz)
sowie coro siamo (Wien). Ihr Studium der
Chorleitung und Dirigierpädagogik absolvierte
sie an der Kunstuniversität Graz bei
Johannes Prinz; weitere Studien führten
sie an das Mozarteum Salzburg. Künstlerische
Impulse erhielt sie unter anderem
von Justin Doyle und Florian Helgath. Von
2021 bis 2023 war sie Stipendiatin des renommierten
Förderprogramms Forum
Dirigieren des Deutschen Musikrates und
arbeitete in diesem Rahmen mit Ensembles
wie dem MDR-Rundfunkchor, dem
SWR Vokalensemble und dem Philharmonischen
Chor Berlin. 2024 gewann sie den
1. Preis der London International Choral
Conducting Competition und ist regelmäßig
als Dirigentin, Dozentin und Jurorin bei
internationalen Festivals und Wettbewerben
tätig.

Award-winning Austrian conductor Agnes
Schnabl is active internationally as a choral
conductor, educator, and lecturer. Since
2021 she has been teaching conducting
and choir at the University of Music and
Performing Arts Vienna. She directs
several ensembles including the Austrian
Youth Choir, the Tyrolean State Youth
Choir, ensemble kanti (Graz) and coro
siamo (Vienna). Schnabl studied choral
conducting and conductor pedagogy at the
University of Music and Performing Arts
Graz with Johannes Prinz and continued
her studies at the Mozarteum University
Salzburg. Further artistic inspiration came
from Justin Doyle and Florian Helgath.
From 2021 to 2023 she was a scholarship
recipient of the prestigious program Forum
Dirigieren of the German Music Council
and worked with ensembles such as the
MDR Radio Choir, SWR Vokalensemble and
Philharmonic Choir Berlin. In 2024 she
received first prize at the London International
Choral Conducting Competition and
is regularly invited as conductor, educator,
and jury member to international festivals

Primož Kerštanj studierte am Konservatorium
und an der Musikakademie
Ljubljana und vertiefte seine Ausbildung
bei renommierten Chorleitenden in
Frankreich, Spanien und Ungarn. Neben
seiner Tätigkeit als Pädagoge leitet er das
Willems DOREMI Music Center in Bled,
wo er Solfeggio und Klavier unterrichtet
und mehrere Ensembles betreut. Ein
besonderer Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit
liegt auf der musikalischen Förderung von
Kindern mit besonderen Bedürfnissen und
Autismus-Spektrum-Störungen.
Kerštanj dirigierte zahlreiche Chöre,
darunter den Akademischen Chor France
Prešeren sowie den Mädchenchor
des Gymnasiums Kranj, mit dem er
herausragende Wettbewerbserfolge
erzielte. Als künstlerischer Leiter des
Frauenchores Carmen Manet gewann
er u. a. den Grand Prix beim Montreux
Chorfestival (2014) und den Titel
„Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017“. Zu
den jüngsten Erfolgen zählt der Grand
Prix beim internationalen Chorwettbewerb
in Lucca (2023). Darüber hinaus ist er
international als Dozent und Juror gefragt.
Primož Kerštanj studied at the
Conservatory and the Academy of Music
in Ljubljana and continued his training
with distinguished choral conductors in
France, Spain, and Hungary. In addition
to his pedagogical work, he directs the
Willems DOREMI Music Center in Bled,
teaching solfeggio and piano and leading
several youth ensembles. He is particularly
dedicated to working with children on the
autism spectrum and with special needs.
Kerštanj has conducted multiple choirs,

of the women’s choir Carmen Manet, he
led the ensemble to major successes
such as the Grand Prix at the Montreux

recently, the choir won the Grand Prix
at the international choral competition
in Lucca (2023). Kerštanj is also active
internationally as a lecturer and member

Der slowakische Dirigent und Pädagoge
Dr. Milan Kolena zählt zu den prägenden
Persönlichkeiten der europäischen Chorszene.
An der Akademie der Darstellenden
Künste in Bratislava unterrichtet er
Chorleitung und Gregorianik und begleitet
junge Dirigentinnen und Dirigenten auf
ihrem künstlerischen Weg.
Als Künstlerischer Leiter mehrerer internationaler
Chorfestivals in Bratislava
bringt er jährlich über 1.500 Sängerinnen
und Sänger aus aller Welt zusammen.
Mit seinen Ensembles – dem Apollo-Chor
und der Schola Gregoriana Bratislavensis
– gewann er zahlreiche internationale
Preise und konzertierte in Europa, Russland,
Südafrika und Asien. Seine Workshops
und Meisterkurse sind weltweit
gefragt.
Kolena wirkt regelmäßig als Juror bei
internationalen Wettbewerben, darunter
den World Choir Games. Zudem ist er
Vizepräsident der World Youth and Children
Choral Artists’ Association und
Mitglied des INTERKULTUR World Choir

Slovakian conductor and educator Dr.
Milan Kolena is widely recognized for his
energetic work in choral performance,
education, and international festival
leadership. He teaches choral conducting
and Gregorian chant at the Academy of
Performing Arts in Bratislava, where he
mentors the next generation of conductors.
Kolena is Artistic Director of several
international choral festivals in Bratislava,
bringing together more than 1,500 singers
each year from across the world.
With his ensembles, the Apollo Choir
and Schola Gregoriana Bratislavensis,
he has achieved numerous international
successes and performed throughout
Europe, Russia, South Africa, and Asia.
His workshops and masterclasses are
regularly invited to festivals and institutions

Im prächtigen Kurpark erblühen farbenfrohe Sommerblumen, Rosen und echte Staudenraritäten,
die das Kongress & TheaterHaus malerisch umrahmen. In den Frühlings- und Sommermonaten
ist der Park Anziehungspunkt zum Verweilen und mit seinem modern sanierten
Musikpavillon gleichzeitig Lebensader für Kulturveranstaltungen und Austausch.
At the splendid spa gardens, colorful summer flowers such as roses and real perinneal rarities
bloom and frame the Kongress & TheaterHaus in a picturesque way. During spring and summer
the park and its modernly reconstructed music pavillion are a center of attraction that invite
passers-by to linger and also serve as central points for cultural events and exchange.
TRINKHALLE
FREUNDSCHAFTSKONZERTE FRIENDSHIP CONCERTS
Die Trinkhalle wurde ab 1829 von Franz Lössl als Solebadeanstalt in Form eines griechischen
Tempels mit einem schönen Foyer erbaut und 1831 in Betrieb genommen. Der elegante, großzügige
Innenraum mit fast 80 Metern Länge diente als Wandelhalle für die Kurgäste, die hier
ihre Trinkkuren absolvierten, und später auch als Bühne für die Kurmusik. Heute wird die
Trinkhalle als vielseitiges Veranstaltungszentrum genutzt.
The architectural design of the “Trinkhalle“ is reminiscent of an ancient Greek temple and was
originally used as a brine bath house. It was built by Franz Lössl and features, among other
things, a beautiful foyer. Construction work began in 1829 and was opened two years later. The
elegant and spacious interior provides ample room as it measures almost 80 meters in length.
It consequently served as the pump room and lobby for the spa‘s patrons, who sought after the
spa‘s waters as an natural remedy. Later, a stage was installed for the spa orchestra to entertain
the guests, and today the ”Trinkhalle“ is a treasured all-round venue for a wide variety of different
concerts and events.
