Through caverns dark, unvisited, unthought of;
Where never look of love from moon or star,
Where never thought of power from the nearest Sun,
Nor bird, nor falling flower with mute caress
Shall cheer the longing waves from weariness
Of following, following – wither, – no wave knows.
And yet, they shrink not from thee, solemn cave,
Forbidding, yet inviting their dimmed love.
The Suns and Moons which flatter need them not,
And faithfully have they adorned the vale,
Has now the moment come to live with thee.
Thou must not be left lonely. Doth the light
The inmost Powers a strange convulsion cause
And give the glories secrets of sad love,
Of darkened, chilled, but changeless love to day:
Then shall, perchance be seen
From this dim grotte to crystal heights
Of these serenest is but a step
For winged feed elastic.
All suffered, and all strove for their return.
Melodia suffered most, much would have striven,
Had but her way been clear.
Her heart was large with love, her ear was keen,
Her hand was strong upon the golden wires.
But through her flowed such endless wishing sweetness
As dimmed her eyes with tears; she asked a guide,
Or else to have that sweetness harmonized,
That she might pause in thought, kneel in the shrine,
And see, clear eyed, the Virgin Mother smile.
One day she wandered lonely in the grave,
Lonely she long had been, thus was the best;
