hinderlich wären. Die Vereinfachung des Motivs mündet in
eine zunehmende Reduktion.
Auch bei der «Frau mit Shawl» (1933) wird mittels expressiver
Schattenformen das helle Gesicht auf die es umgebenden
schwarzen Flächen bezogen. Doch sind die Schatten
nicht autark, sondern stehen in Abhängigkeit zu den hellen,
raumplastisch dargestellten, schattenwerfenden Formen
des Kopftuches, der Augenhöhlen und der Nase. Die erzeugte
Hell-Dunkel-Wirkung gibt einen spezifischen Lichteinfall
und somit den Bezug zu einer bestimmten räumlichen
und zeitlichen Situation wieder. Es wird dadurch ein
Zeitmoment eingebracht, welches der fortwährenden Gültigkeit
der Bildaussage entgegensteht.
Im Blatt «Der Taubstumme» (1935) (Abb. S. 117) sind
neben dem Antlitz des bärtigen Mannes noch zusätzlich dessen
Hilfe suchende Hände und das kahle Geäst eines Baumes
im Hintergrund dargestellt. Durch die Erweiterung des
Kopfes um diese Motive tritt die grafisch-formale Bedeutung
von Schatten im Gesicht zurück. Die um zusätzliche Attribute
erweiterte Porträtdarstellung ermöglicht den Verzicht
auf jenes ausgeprägte Lichtschattenspiel, wie es in den bisherigen
Porträts aus formalen Gründen unentbehrlich war.
Diese Schattenflächen besitzen zudem eine stark expressive
Wirkung, die Werner Berg in den Dreißigerjahren bewusst

attribute of artistic intention would be a hindrance. With time,
such simplification increasingly became reduction.
In «Woman with Shawl» (1933) the light face is also related
to the surrounding black surfaces using expressive shadow
forms. But the shadows are not autarkic, being instead dependent
forms of the head scarf, the eye sockets and the nose,
which are light, show spatial plasticity and cast shadows. The
effect of light and dark reproduces a specific illumination and
with it a relationship to a defined spatial and temporal situation.
Thus an element of time is introduced that opposes the
perpetual validity of the image’s statement.
In addition to the bearded man’s face, the print «The
Deaf-Mute» (1935) (ill. p. 117) also shows his hands impeaching
for help and the bare branches of a tree in the background.
Through the inclusion of these other elements, the graphic-formal
significance of shadows in the face decreases. The extension
of the portrait using these additional attributes makes it
possible for the artist to abandon the pronounced play of light
and shadow, which for formal reasons had been indispensable
in the portraits up to this point. Additionally, such shadows
have a strongly expressive effect, which Berg was consciously
striving for in the thirties. In the quieter, less expressive depic-
