und back to the roots zieht’s ihn öfter am späteren Abend.
Erleuchtet vom Weine, befeuert und mächtig beflügelt
donnert Karl Heinz dann Akkorde und wucht’ge Kaskaden,
schonend wohl kaum des Klavieres empfindliche Tasten.
Wo blieb Verlorenen Tangos subtiles Gewebe?
Lasset uns heben nun hoch unsre schimmernden Humpen,
Heinz (how can anyone have their child baptised with
that name...?) - we love you and we need you!
Ten years ago, on the occasion of a birthday (yes -
good guess, it was the sixtieth!) of the person who we
are celebrating today, I already read an arduously composed
and even engraved poem. Without an echo, it
went up in smoke in the strongly alcoholised crowd and
therefore deserves to be recited today (repetitions, dear
Karl Heinz, are the salt of light music), but not without
careful adaptation to this festive occasion:
Today, dear people, is the seventieth anniversary
Of the birth of our old man so hale and hearty.
Look at him, the fiery elder with his bearded countenance,
His hair silvery and eyes shining with so much vigilance!
Even if the minor seconds and some of the tritones
- the sounds that have given his music a style of its own
Even if these tones, dissonant as they are in their place,
Engraved runes and little wrinkles in his wise face,
This cheerful fellow is still bursting with youth and energy,
And from his lips bubbles a stream of unstoppable speech
Full of anecdotes and information we should know,
Karl Heinz is familiar with most things about body and soul,
About Kafka and Heisenberg, Wilhelm and Frederick II the Great,
- as well as the Prussian empire’s history to date
Which means taking the owls of Brandenburg March to Spree-Athens -
He not only knows (and, in turn, also knows that we all know this)
How to use the rules of serious music in a way that is ideal,
Layering both bravely and heartily the friction’s appeal
One upon the other and side by side in Euterpe’s realm,
He even knows the delights of classical jazz and how to enjoy them
And often, late in the evening, back to the roots he is drawn
Inspired by wine, full of fire, with powerful wings to carry him on
Karl Heinz thunders the chords and cascades so massively,
That he hardly spares the piano’s sensitive keys.
What has happened to the subtle texture of the Lost Tango?
Where did the tender Song of Virgins in the Garden go?
Everything unites in the undulating muse’s primal stream,
Yet Adorno is turning in a grave that is clammy and unseen.
So now our glistening glasses should all be raised
Drink to him and with him as he celebrates his special day!
May fate in its mercy long spare you
Of the evil dangers that threaten as we grow older too!
Allow yourself, and your friends, one more schnapps in the glass,
And may you be given many more fruitful years as they pass!
Now it’s time for the whole group here to call out and applaud:
Oh, friend Karl Heinz Wahren - may you and yours be blessed by God!
