How has the charity expanded/evolved since
your initial chili run?
Chilis on Wheels now serves once a week in NYC, and 100-
200 meals a week. Chapters have sprung up across the
country in San Diego, Portland, Denver, and Puerto Rico.
What are your further aspirations for Chilis
On Wheels?
In the immediate future we are looking for a kitchen that
will allow us to increase the amount of food that we
distribute. In NYC there are approximately 60,000 people
living in the streets. 1 in 6 Americans struggle with
hunger. The need is there and it is staggering. It is up to
us to do something about it.
Within a couple of years we hope to create a sort of vegan
food hub where we can get the community together
around food. Provide daily meals, give vegan cooking
classes on a budget to the community. Perhaps have a
community garden and rally people on how to grow some
of their own food. Collaborate with other agencies, for
example work readiness organisations, have cooking
training, internships, etc.
We hope to help people that are hurting, and at the same
time spread the message of veganism, and help people go
vegan.
In your view, how does veganism intersect
with issues relating to justice?
All struggles are connected, all suffering is connected. I
like to maximise my impact, so I like to work the
