Teachers Day Celebrated as Street Store Day: Spread the word
to Hang Up and Help Out
On the occasion of Teachers Day,Silver Oaks –The School of Hyderabad hosted ‘Street
Store’ a pop up store concept where the needy come and pick up whatever they want on
an equal footing with the giver. Giving away in a manner that is dignified for the receiver
to receive. This was our approach of celebrating Teachers Day this year.
The Street Store has previously hosted editions in other cities across the world, including
Cape Town, Itajai, Sydney, Teresina, Chennai and Hyderabad among others. Founded
as recently as January 2014 by South-African citizens Max Pazak and Kayli Levitan, the
concept became open source when the two realized that homelessness is an unfortunate
situation not limited to just South-African cities. Now just about anyone can host their
own street store anywhere in the world.
The one day event was held in front of the School premises and curated by the teachers
of Silver Oaks. Contributions for this event came from the teachers and students of
the School. The publicity for this event started ten days prior and the response was
overwhelming. The school was buzzing with the drive to donate, then sort and display
so that finally when the store is put up, it will be hassle free for the people to browse
through and “Shop”.
“To integrate in teaching and learning, the goals for conservation and social justice. To
develop civic virtues and emotional skills that can empower our acorns to be icons of
personal and social change who will play leading roles in the transition to a sustainable
future is the mission of our School . The idea of the Street Store appealed to us as it is
congruent with our ideology”, said the Principal of the School, Ms. Seetha Murty.
Teachers rolled up their sleeves and ensured that the day went on smoothly and that they
were able to put on a smile on and each and every one who visited the store today.
