Gardening provides year

Gardening provides year round access, and makes mowing simple. Beech hedges either side add volume and structure, and over time will frame the wilder area beyond, where apple, plum and cherry trees form a diminutive orchard. Native grasses and beautiful weeping birch trees soften the far corners, sheltering an informal seating area of sunken railway sleepers. From a tired and unused space (below) to year-round beauty If your garden needs a new lease of life, we can help, writes Izi Glover This was a particularly serendipitous garden project, that began back in March when a LoveEast reader from Bow asked us for help with their back garden. The old decking in their five by seven metre patch had long given way, and they were looking for some inspiration so that they could enjoy their outside space once more. After a good chat, we came up with a plan. Floriferous borders were number one on the list, with plants to give lengthy colour and interest – foxgloves, aromatic Nepeta (catmint), hardy Geranium "Johnson’s Blue", Japanese anemones and wafting Mexican feather grass. Roses add height and drama – Rosa glauca with its hint of the wild and Rosa "Fru Dagmar Hastrup" for its pointed hips and fragrance. A lawn extends from the existing patio paving to the rear of the garden, making a soft relaxation space and giving a good year-round eyeful of green. Paving set into the lawn edges Our landscapers worked hard and fast, and within a few days the new garden was complete. Our customers told us that on the first weekend they kept on popping outside just to see their new garden. We hope they enjoy it for years to come. Tasks for July Give greenfly the brush off, or squirt them with a weak solution of water and washing up liquid. Keep the weeds down! Try a little weeding more often to prevent weeds from setting seed and increasing their numbers. Izi Glover is a Hackney gardener at London Fields and Gardens.
