Dean of Windsor and a courtier
of Henry VII.
The medieval church was the
religious centre of the Hackney
community until the parish
decided to build St John’s
in 1814.
According to the first census
in 1801 Hackney had a
population of 12,700 and the
building project was started
after St Augustine’s could
no longer accommodate the
area's growing population. The
medieval church could only hold
800 people.
The tower has its bell, a key part in its history
The new church was meant
to hold 3,000 worshippers,
but the budget of £10,000
was insufficient and St John’s
church was built without a bell
tower. St Augustine’s Church
was demolished but the tower
survived.
“So Hackney ended up with a
church without a bell tower
and a tower without a church,”
Laurie explains.
