AREA(S) OF GOOD PRACTICE:
• Specialist Gymnastics and Dance teaching for every year
group once a week during class teacher’s PPA time.
• Establishing links with a wide number of sports clubs both
in and outside school. This led to more clubs and sporting
activities being offered to pupils before and after school.
• Raising the profile of sport in school and delivering
varied CPD to teachers.
• Increasing competitive opportunities both inside and
outside of school.
• Creating an inclusive environment where all children
are challenged and encouraged to have a go!
WHAT PRIORITY AREAS WERE IDENTIFIED?
• All pupils in school – The need to raise the profile of
sport in school was high, for both pupils and teachers.
CPD and competitive opportunities needed to be
provided to those who asked for it and needed it.
• To work collaboratively and in partnership with local
schools and sporting organisations.
HOW WAS IT IDENTIFIED?
• An audit of staff skills highlighted a need to up skill
staff and to also build confidence.
• Need to raise the quality of PE teaching in school.
• Desire to target the less active pupils.
• Need to create inclusive competitive opportunities
both in and outside school, where all children were
given a chance.
WHAT WERE THE INTENDED OUTCOMES?
• For all teachers to feel confident in delivering high quality
PE lessons, even in those where they felt less confident
previously. This would then lead to all children having
access to high quality PE teaching.
• To create an inclusive and dynamic programme of sport,
both inside and outside school, where all children would
feel encouraged to participate.
WHAT PROVISIONS WERE PUT IN PLACE?
• Children from all 12 classes apply to be Sports Prefects.
These children, alongside the School Sports Crew,
support in lessons and during competitive events.
• Inter-house competitions regularly held across a variety
of different sports.
• Links were built upon and more local competitions were
entered, which resulted in us achieving a 2nd place finish
in Tri-Golf at the 2016 Hampshire School Games.
• Coaches and specialist students from local colleges were
bought in to support curriculum delivery, after school clubs
and to deliver CPD to teachers.
• Strong relationships have been built with other local
schools through the delivery of CPD. Staff were able to
be covered in school to attend these sessions, then apply
their knowledge to their own teaching.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR US?
• We will continue to provide CPD throughout the course of
the year, as this has led to teachers having greater interest,
motivation and confidence when delivering PE in school.
• We will continue to provide opportunities for pupils to
participate in competitive sport competitions, both inside
and outside of school, as we have seen a large increase in
this since we started to promote it more in school.
Saints Foundation delivered an ‘Anti
Bullying Festival’ on Friday 18 November
2016, at Woodlands Community College as
part of anti-bullying week, which involved
running a football festival that focused on
values to actively combat bullying; respect,
equality and fair play were the focus areas.
As such, the rules and points system of this festival reflected
these values and differed to that of a normal football festival
(Please find the rules opposite).
The schools involved were Bassett Green Primary School,
Ludlow Junior School and Townhill Junior School, who are
part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme that
is delivered by Saints Foundation, and funded through the
Premier League Charitable Fund.
During the festival Kelvin Davis (Ex-Southampton FC
Goalkeeper) met and spoke with participants, as well
as being interviewed by the club’s media team.
The media team were able to capture the positive
atmosphere at the festival, and were able to publicise
this through social media and sharing pictures from
the day with the participating schools. Players responded
extremely well to the values and could explain the
definitions of the values and how they can relate to them
in school. Please feel free to use and adapt the rules
below for any festivals you may run in your school.
