Rewarding our Volunteers
On 27 June we celebrated our
Volunteer Long Service awards at
the Crowne Plaza hotel, where 62
volunteers celebrated a staggering
1,312 years of combined service.
Our team of 1,550 volunteers are vital
and valued members of ‘Team NUH’,
working across QMC, City Hospital and
Ropewalk House.
3,905
years of
dedication
This year's staff Long Service
Awards took place at Colwick Hall
Hotel on Friday 28 July. 135 staff
members were recognised for
their dedication and service to our
hospitals.
Colleagues who attended the award
ceremony celebrated 25, 30 and 35
years of service at NUH. To coincide
with QMC40 celebrations, an additional
category of 40 years' service was
introduced and seven colleagues
successfully celebrated this key
milestone at the event.
Barbara Hart, a domestic at NUH, who
celebrated 40 years of service said:
"I've always loved my job and the
people I've met have become firm
friends. Colleagues much younger then
me can't believe how keen I am to
come to work every day. I love working
at Ropewalk House and have enjoyed
a lot of good times over the years.
It's especially nice to be rewarded on
QMC's 40th birthday."
This year's event was hosted by our
Chief Executive Peter Homa and
Chairman Eric Morton.
Eric said:"Thank you are the most
important two words you can say
to someone, we were honoured to
celebrate a combined 3905 years of
service at our hospitals."
Award winners and guests enjoyed a
celebratory meal followed by a formal
certificate presentation. Throughout
the evening a series of short videos
were shown, capturing colleagues'
experience at NUH and reflecting on
what it has meant to be part of 'Team
NUH'.
At the event amongst our dedicated
staff was Deputy Trust Secretary,
Tracey Wright, who joined the Chief
Executive's Office at the age of 18,
after graduating from college. Tracey
celebrated her 30 years’ service at the
ceremony and reflected on her time at
NUH and what it means to be formally
recognised:
“It’s nice to know that loyalty is
appreciated, recognising people's
commitment and dedication to the
organisation is a really positive thing. I
love working here; people share similar
beliefs and principles, and there’s
always frequent change which keeps
my role interesting.”
Staff members were presented with a
commemorative badge and certificate
in recognition of their service to NUH.
This year's awards ceremony proved
poignant to Chief Executive, Peter
Homa, as it was his last opportunity to
formally thank staff for their years of
service, before he retires, with his last
day at NUH on 27 October, Peter was
presented with a special certificate on
the night, marking his 11 years’ service
at NUH.
This year's awards ceremony was only
made possible due to the generous
sponsorship by the League of Friends
at both QMC and City Hospital. Their
continued commitment and support
allows us to formally recognise and
reward staff and improve the event
year on year.
valued and rewarded.”
62 volunteers were recognised for
reaching the following key milestones
in 2017; 5 years, 10 years, 15 years,
20 years, 25 years, through to an
impressive 30 years’ of service.
This year’s event was hosted by Peter
Homa and Eric Morton and kindly
sponsored by the QMC and City
League of Friends.
Peter said: “On behalf of the NUH
Trust Board, I would like to thank
our volunteers for all they do. Our
volunteers contribute significantly to the
soul of our organisation and enrich the
lives of so many we serve – patients,
their families and carers. Our volunteers
are intimate and valued members of
the NUH family, and today’s event was
all about saying ‘thank you’ for their
dedication and for the difference they
make.”
After the formal presentation, award
winners and their guests enjoyed a
celebratory meal at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel.
Karen Nowicki who celebrated five
years of service at this year’s event
remarked that her role as a volunteer in
renal transplant proved very important
on a personal level. Karen is on her
third kidney transplant and felt strongly
that it is important “to give something
back” to the NHS and is proud to be a
member of ‘Team NUH’.
