315-445-2360 | Adults and Seniors Program AARP driver safety courses at the JCC this fall We can all use a refresher every now and then when it comes to safely navigating the roadways. If you’d like to further hone your driving skills—as well as save some money on your auto insurance and knock some points off your driving record—check out these upcoming driver safety courses that the JCC will be hosting. Connect. Learn. Have fun. Birthday celebrations Each month we hold a birthday celebration for all the senior birthdays in that month. The dates are posted in the newsletter. Come help us celebrate! Bridge We welcome new bridge players of all ages and levels on Mondays from 1–3:30 p.m. Join us for lunch and then hit the tables! A new table will open up when we have enough extra players signed up. Please stop by the front desk to get on the list. Driver safety courses Would you like to lower your auto insurance costs and reduce points on your license? We regularly host AARP Driver Safety and National Safety Council Defensive Driving courses here at the JCC one or more times each year. See this fall’s upcoming AARP classes at left. For classes coming up a little further out in the future, check our monthly newsletter or regularly visit our website for announcements. Mah Jongg Come play Mah Jongg at the JCC on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. New players are always welcome! For more information, call us at 315-445-2040, ext. 104. Neighborhood Advisor The JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor program offers outreach, information and referral services to seniors age 60 and older living in DeWitt, Jamesville, Fayetteville, Manlius and Minoa. This free, confidential service helps seniors so they can live independently in their homes. The program is part of the Onondaga County Department of Adult and Long Term Care Services. Presentations We regularly hold informational presentations by our Neighborhood Advisor and other speakers on topics of interest to seniors. Check our newsletter for upcoming topics and dates. SAVE THE DATE: Sisterhood Symposium Oct. 19 This year’s Sisterhood Symposium, titled “Assimilation: Is It Good for the Jews?,” will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the JCC of Syracuse. It is being presented by the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas and the JCC of Syracuse. The event’s featured guest speakers will be Jenna Weissman Jocelit, Ph.D., professor, Experiential Education & Jewish Cultural Arts at George Washington University, and Beth Sholom’s very own Rabbi Pepperstone. For information on tickets and table sponsorships, contact the CBS-CS office at 315-446-9570 or Fall 2017 AARP Driver Safety schedule • Tuesday, Oct. 10 and Wednesday, Oct. 11 9 am – noon • Tuesday, Nov. 14 and Wednesday, Nov. 15 9 am – noon The class is $25 per person ($20 for AARP members) and open to licensed drivers of all ages, although it is geared toward older drivers. Attendees must come both days and bring their drivers license. The AARP Driver Safety course teaches current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Attendees will also learn how to manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. AARP membership is not required to take the course and there are no tests to pass. Upon completing either the AARP course, participants are eligible for a discount on their auto insurance and up to a four point reduction for recent infractions.
