Northbrook Community Nursery School’s
tradition continues in downtown Northbrook
Founded 66 years ago, Northbrook
Community Nursery
School (NCNS) is turning over
a new leaf this year. The nonprofit,
non-denominational
preschool will relocate to The
Village Presbyterian Church in
downtown Northbrook in July.
The move signifies a homecoming,
as NCNS was previously
based at the corner of Shermer
Road and Church Street from
1955 to 1975.
The location offers NCNS
bright, big classrooms and excellent
facilities perfectly suited
to school’s play-based philosophy.
A beautiful back garden,
soon to be equipped with a new
playground, invites children to
explore outside.
NCNS has a strong reputation
for preparing children for
kindergarten and beyond. Each
preschool class is taught by two
highly-experienced co-teachers
using the Creative Curriculum
model. This flexible curriculum
engages students in theme-based
study units while fostering development
across social/emotional,
physical, cognitive, and
language platforms.
A day’s activities include a
range of dramatic play, creative
art, scientific exploration, storytelling
and literature, and outdoor
play. Students engage in a
mix of small- and large-group
activities. Each week, children
spend dedicated time with the
school’s music specialist. Pre-K
classes also include a focus on
math and science in addition to
daily practice of Handwriting
Without Tears.
Beyond the independent
classes for two-, three-, and fouryear
olds, NCNS offers enrichment
programs. Students are
invited to extend the day with
Lunch Bunch classes ranging
from yoga to Spanish to cooking.
Along with their caregivers,
children ages 18 to 23 months
experience their first taste of preschool
in the popular Parent &
Tot program.
In addition to a commitment
to excellent education, Northbrook
Community Nursery
School is known for its inclusive
atmosphere and deep local
ties. The school hosts several
popular family events each year,
bringing parents and children together.
The return to downtown
Northbrook will grant families
easy access to The Village Green
as well as many local events in
which the school participates,
including Northbrook Farmers
Market, Fourth of July Parade,
and Northbrook Days.
“Northbrook Community
Nursery School is a special
place. Our students learn from
an early age the importance of
being a part of a community,
participating in local events and
service,” Board President Kelly
Parikh said. “Many of our parents
attended the school, and are
now enrolling their own children
here. We look forward to many
years at our new location instilling
a love of learning in all our
little ones.”
Northbrook Community Nursery
School is now enrolling.
Tours are available on request.
