Music Theater Works summer workshop builds confidence on
stage, all students guaranteed parts during summer camps
For the past 17 summers, children
from 8 to 13 have learned
about musical theater firsthand
at Music Theater Works in Wilmette.
“I think it was Lucy who convinced
me we really had a good
thing going,” recalls general
manager Bridget McDonough,
when asked about her favorite
memories of the company’s
summer workshop programs.
“Lucy was a sassier, more selfassured
Nathan Detroit in ‘Guys
and Dolls’ than any ten-year-old
little red-haired girl had a right
to be!”
“I was flabbergasted when I
found out later that on the first
day of the workshop, Lucy’s
mom approached our director to
say her daughter had never been
on stage before and might need a
little extra coaching and coaxing
to get over her shyness. Believe
Parents rave!
“Our sons love the Workshop and are so
excited about their parts. They’ve been
practicing their songs again all morning with
their scripts –- it’s so fun to watch them!”
“The Workshop has been a highlight of our
me, on stage that girl was not
shy!”
Performing offers so many
benefits to young people: it
builds confidence, enhances observational
and analytical skills,
fosters teamwork and, above all,
is a lot of fun.
At Music Theater Works, children
get to sing, dance and act, in
a nurturing and fun atmosphere.
No experience or audition is required,
and everyone gets a part.
“Our staff does a wonderful
job giving each of the kids their
moment to shine, regardless of
their experience level,” says Mc-
daughter’s summer the last two years, and she
always returns from the experience bubbling
with confidence and full of fond memories.”
“This experience for our son has been one of
incredible growth –- mainly because he has
suffered his entire life with social anxiety. You
have made a difference that will profoundly
counselors to prepare a performance
“You’d be amazed at what
these kids accomplish in only
six days,” McDonough says. “I
know Lucy’s parents were!”
