Message from the Chair
Fiscal year 2010-2011 was a busy and successful year for LNCT. As Board Chair Olivia
Mercado completed her tenure, the Trust entered the new fiscal year on a sound economic
footing and well on the path to organizational sustainability.
Memberships and business sponors have increased and the Trust has reorganized
its donor categories that we might better recognize some of the larger donors who have
stepped forward to show that they value the work being done by LNCT.
The work being, of course, the reason we exist and to that end the Trust was able to
Doug Firstbrook acquire an additonal 19 acres that connect directly to the 54-acre Alder Creek Farm (ACF).
Board Chair
This parcel has been long sought after by the Trust and is the keystone piece in our desire to
create ecological connectivity between the farm and the State Park. Sitka Wetlands, named for its dominant habitat
type, includes fresh and estuarine wetlands, and some uplands along the entire bay front between ACF and the
residentially developed Bayside Garden area. This acquisition along with the 14 acres west of Bayside Garden Road
acquired previously as part of our North Edge protection strategy has put us in the enviable position of securing 90%
of goal. We continue, of course, to pursue the remaining parcels while we investigate the availability of other high
priority estuary properties.
The Coastal Food Ecology Center continues to shine as a key way to keep the community involved in a
hands-on way. Community Garden and Permaculture Garden participation is at an all time high and a new orchard
steward has stepped forward. Moving forward our goal is to increase our knowledge of sustainable agriculture
practices and provide an increase in our contribution to the North County Food Bank.
Because of the generosity of our donors, we were able to have our first Stewardship Intern this summer. The
timing couldn’t have been better as acqusitions require not only management plans but also hands-on stewardship to
meet the expectations of our community and institutional funders alike.
As we move into FY 2011-2012, increasing our capacity to both acquire and properly steward land will be
foremost in our planning. The ability to bring ongoing projects to fruition, continue to engage volunteers and fulfill
our management obligations will require both hard work and capital. We continue to be grateful to our community
of volunteers, sponsors and donors who make it possible for us to do this work.
