“ I believe I have the best —
the finest — Degas and
Manet in America and I
want to over-match them
with the finest Whistler —
We ought to bring this
about — YOU and I.
ANNUAL REPORT
July 1, 2008–June 30, 2009
HILL-STEAD AT-A-GLANCE
Hill-Stead offers the public more than
1,000 programs and activities annually,
for all ages.
Volunteers are a high priority. Over 150
volunteers help us get our work done.
Art and decorative collections — masterpieces
by the French Impressionists, 3,500
family-collected objects — get top billing.
Hill-Stead stewards historic structures, 19
intact period rooms, ornamental gardens,
woodland trails, a pond ecosystem, outdoor
classrooms and a 19,000 document archive,
and features them in a wide variety of
public programs.
With ten buildings dating from 1765 to
1940 and 152 acres of designed landscape,
preservation and cyclical maintenance
projects rate among our highest priorities.
of an SBM Charitable Foundation-funded education program.
Perhaps the most notable event that occurred in the last year was
the January 2009 arrival of our new Director and CEO, Sue
Sturtevant. Our search underscored the many strengths that reside
at Hill-Stead. First and foremost, Cindy Cormier and Marie Dalton-Meyer
performed wonderfully as Interim Co-Directors during the search period
and both were finalists for the position, demonstrating the high quality of
our staff and the strength of the resultant management team. Second,
the Search Committee was "blown away" by the depth and talent of the
applicant pool which spanned the globe! Finally, as we entered a period
of economic turmoil, the management team, during a period of transition,
ably managed Hill-Stead. While we did experience an operating deficit of approximately $150,000
during FY2009, the newly formed management team quickly took steps to contain the 2009 deficit
and to ensure a balanced budget for FY2010.
Maintaining the quality of programming and the grounds remained a top priority in spite of the
economic challenges facing all not-for-profit institutions, and our efforts paid off. Over 30,000
individuals visited Hill-Stead in the last fiscal year, which is an increase from the prior two year period.
Visitors took part in house tours, enjoyed lectures and programs, and walked the grounds. The
Sunken Garden Poetry and Music Festival flourished and we continued to attract new and broader
audiences. In the past year, we welcomed more than 100 new members.
As 85% of the operating budget is raised from scratch each year, I can’t thank my fellow Board
members, volunteers and staff enough for their steadfast dedication and persistent support of the
museum. This group makes generous contributions to our Annual Fund campaigns, which in our
most recent fiscal year grossed $252,000. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the 2009
Chairs of the Theodate Pope Riddle Society, Holly and Stuart Holden, and to the chair of Annual
Fund, Kathanne Fowler. We were able to meet our Annual Fund goals in both years, albeit adjusted
lower for economic conditions, and I am especially proud that Hill-Stead's Board contributed over
40% of these totals.
Our two primary fund raising events, May Market and the Benefit Dinner Auction, were masterfully
organized and presented by Hill-Stead’s core volunteer group, the Hill-Steaders, ably co-chaired in
2009 by Elizabeth Carter and Jane Edwards. These two events raised more than $250,000 in support
of educational programs and day-to-day operations. Kudos to Ingunn Hekneby and Michael
Bassock for so ably serving as Honorary Chairs of the benefit dinner auction and ensuring that the
museum’s most important fundraising event was a resounding financial success.
In closing, I am excited to report that the Trustees, Board and Staff recently completed and
approved a five-year strategic plan which sets the course for a strong and energetic Hill-Stead.
Included in our plan is the launch of an Endowment/Capital Campaign, and to jump-start our campaign,
Hill-Stead received a $25,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor.
Hill-Stead, with its world-renowned Impressionist art collection, landmark site, landscape and public
programs is a place where art and nature meet in the most pleasant and inspiring ways. Please
come visit soon.
A Place Where Art & Nature Meet 5

When I joined Hill-Stead Museum as Director and CEO in
January 2009, I was captivated by the beauty of the collections
and landscape. As a relative newcomer, I threw
myself into learning everything I could about the history of Hill-Stead
to gain a better sense of this unique National Historic Landmark.
After attending every program available to the public, I was able to
discern five major assets that we offer: a renowned Impressionist
collection, a Colonial Revival house that is an architectural wonder,
a beautiful formal Sunken Garden and three miles of walking trails,
plus 152 acres of pastoral and woodland property and an important agricultural / farming heritage to
interpret and cultivate in new ways.
In the spring of 2009, Hill-Stead Museum began to see a rise in the number of visitors, members
and gift shop sales. As an institution we are becoming increasingly more visible in various media
and the press and are very much an integral part of the Connecticut museum world. Cultivating
new, serious partnerships with different organizations such as Leadership Greater Hartford,
Stanley-Whitman House, CT Historical Society, Greater Hartford Arts Council, Mark Twain House,
Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, Discovery Center and New Britain Museum of American Art has
helped build credibility and excitement around our mission and values.
Our capital projects in 2009 were funded by a grant received from the Connecticut Trust which
allowed us to take two important steps toward the preservation of our two barns on the lower
part of the property. The “Assessment of Existing Conditions” report of the barns, completed in
October 2008, is the road map to the stabilization of both barns and will enable us to write grants
for this work. We were also able to hire an architectural historian, Rachel Carley, to amend our 1991
National Landmark Application at the National Park Service. The amended report carefully
describes all of the buildings and the significant landscape features on the estate, not just the Pope
Riddle House. It also changes Hill-Stead’s designation from a single building to a historic district.
This report is now in the hands of the CT Commission on Culture & Tourism's Historic Preservation
Office, who will get it to Washington for us. A major capital improvement project well underway is
the installation of a sophisticated fire detection and suppression system funded through major
grants from the Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman and William and Alice Mortensen Foundations,
and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. This major improvement will preserve
the historic house, rich archives, priceless collections and important business files far into the future.
More than 2,500 students from around the region representing schools K–college visited Hill-Stead
in 2009. The students and their teachers were here for an extended period of time, taking full
advantage of the property and resources. We are proud that there is such a high rate of repeat
visitation. In addition, we have poets-in-residence based at two Hartford high schools, A. I. Prince
Technical and Greater Hartford Classical Magnet School. Our education programs at the museum
are supported in part by SBM Charitable Foundation and Farmington Bank. We receive support for
our Poetry Outreach Program from Ellen Jeanne Goldfarb Memorial Trust and Lincoln Financial.
Just checking our website, www.hillstead.org, gives a complete idea of all the public programs
that are offered here. They range from nature walks for all ages to the Sunken Garden Poetry and
Music Festival to summer adventure programs for children and new letterboxing and family backpack
activities. The museum also has a strong online presence with its internationally-read nature blog
at hillsteadblog.wordpress.com and its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/hillsteadmuseum.
I’m convinced that Hill-Stead has something for everyone. Please make time to come back for a
visit and find out what you can gain from the full Hill-Stead experience.
COLLECTIONS & ARCHIVES
Accomplishments in FY09
New low-voltage, white halogen painting lights
were installed on 8 of the museum’s 19 major
works of art. In contrast to the old fixtures – frame
lights with incandescent bulbs installed by the first
Museum Director in 1951 – these lights allow for true
color rendition, and illuminate the entire canvas.
Collections review was completed in the period
rooms. Since the project began in January 2000,
nearly 3,300 items have been examined, described,
numbered individually, photographed and logged into
the collections database. Many interns and volunteers
spent countless hours assisting with this project.
The Sonia Osborn
Museum Studies
Internship, developed
between Hill-Stead and
Westover School, was
launched in April 2009.
In honor of Westover’s
long time art history teacher, Sonia Osborn, the internship
is intended for junior or senior AP Art History
students looking to pursue in-depth study. During
their time at the museum, each student must work
on a collections project, research a piece in Hill-
Stead's collection, and explore a subject of her
choosing that illustrates the Hill-Stead–Westover
connection.
Above: Director of Education & Curatorial Services Cynthia Cormier admires the newly visible clarity, texture and nuance in the color of Monet’s
Grainstacks, White Frost Effect (Oil, 1889) after the installation of a new state-of-the-art light fixture.
