Role of the Department APL Co-ordinator 

Departmental APL Co-ordinators manage the process from a departmental perspective. They will be appointed by the Head of Department to ensure 

that University policy and practice is developed appropriately within department provision, and that activity in this area is appropriately monitored and 

evaluated. Because of the nature of the role, a Head of Department may appoint more than one APL Co-ordinator. 

A Departmental APL Co-ordinator has responsibility for 

1. providing a point of contact for staff in the department and advice and guidance to those staff dealing with applications for APL credit; 

2. ensuring that advice and guidance to is made available to students enrolled in the department who wish to make applications for APL credit; 

3. as appropriate, liaising with other Department APL Co-ordinators and Recruitment Co-ordinators to ensure roles and duties are clear; 

4. evaluating applications for certificated credit and making the award of credit for prior study (APCL) to students enrolled on courses; 

5. ensuring that Credit Record Forms for award of APCL credit are completed fully and in line with University guidance regarding the award of APCL 

credit. Sign off same forms; 

6. advising and providing guidance to staff and students regarding making an APEL application; 

7. ensuring that the process of agreeing the form of an APEL claim, including an initial diagnostic assessment of an individual’s APEL opportunities, 

is undertaken and recorded on a University APEL Assessment Agreement Plan; 

8. managing the assessment of APEL submissions and ensure that the process is completed. Act as a first or second marker as appropriate. 

9. liaising with the Recruitment Co-ordinators where appropriate to support the process of credit-rating of external courses against departmental 

provision (in particular for the purposes of international recruitment.) 

10. providing monitoring/feedback on systems and outcomes to the APL Board as requested. 

11. To determine any deadlines pertaining to the currency of prior certificated learning awarded against departmental subject provision. 


Role of the Recruitment Co-ordinator. 1 

Recruitment Co-ordinators manage the award of credit for prior certificated learning process from an admission perspective to ensure, amongst other 

responsibilities, that University practice is developed appropriately within admissions provision, and that activity in this area is appropriately monitored 

and evaluated. APEL processes will be managed by the APL Co-ordinators. 

A Recruitment Co-ordinator has responsibility for 

1. providing a point of contact and advice and guidance to those staff dealing with applications for APCL credit at the admissions stage 

2. ensuring that advice and guidance to is made available to applicants who wish to make applications for APL credit; 

3. as appropriate, liaising with Department APL Co-ordinators and other Recruitment Co-ordinators to ensure roles and duties are clear; 

4. evaluating applications for certificated credit and making the award of credit for prior study (APCL) to applicants at the admissions stage 

5. ensuring that an Admissions Credit Record Forms for award of APCL credit are completed fully and in line with University guidance regarding the 

award of APCL credit. Sign off same forms 

6. ensuring that procedures for processing APCL credit are in place over the clearing period and open evenings. 

7. make recommendations regarding the credit-rating of external courses liaising with APL Co-ordinators or Course Leaders as appropriate. 

8. providing monitoring/feedback on systems and outcomes to the APL Board as requested.
