BALL Watch Company
Since 1891, accuracy under adverse conditions
Since 1891, BALL Watch Company has been producing mechanical timepieces that comply
with the most stringent criteria for precision, quality and reliability. As pioneer of chronometry
standards and with a rich past closely associated with the history of the American rail-
roads, BALL Watch remains one of the most respected and well established watch brands in the
United States.
Watchmaking accuracy for the
benefit of the American RailRoads
The most adverse conditions can give rise
to the greates t achievements. The history of
BALL watches is inseparabl e from that of the
railroad pioneers. Indeed, the BALL Watch
adventure began on 18 th April 1891 with the
tragic railroad accident in Kipton (Ohio) in
the United States. This catastrophic head-on
collision between two trains resulted in eight
fatalities. This disaster has left a lasting impres -
sion, all the more so since it was due to the inaccuracy
of the watch belonging to one of the
trains’ engineers.
The main American railroad companies then
entrusted the watchmaker Webster Clay Ball
(1847 - 1922) of Cleveland (Ohio) with the res-
ponsibility of establishing strict chronometric
precision standards for all watches used by railroad
employees. As «Chief Time Inspector», he
took to creating a time standardization system
based on extremely strict criteria of accuracy
and reliability. In order to maintain the accuracy
of the railroad network, he also created the
«BALL Time Service». Employing more than
1,800 inspectors and over 75% of the railroads
in America, it allowed to regularly check the
timepieces of all rail employees. The requirements
of Webb C. Ball were of such validity that
they inspired later in 1973 the Swiss Society of
Chronometry (COSC) for the establishment of
its own chronometric certification standards
which are still applied today.
History
From America to Switzerland,
back to the basics of watchmaking
By founding the «Webb C. Ball Watch
Company» in Cleveland in 1894, Webb C. Ball
has spread the use of watches bearing the
«BALL’s standard» logo to virtually the entire
United States railroad network. Their renown
rapidly extended beyond American borders
and the phrase «to be on the BALL» came to
mean absolute precision. In order to provide
watches that complied with its own quality
and reliability criteria, BALL Watch soon fitted
its timepieces with movements manufactured in
Switzerland.
While preserving its American origins, BALL
Watch Company relocated its international
headquarters and watchmaking workshops
to Switzerland in La Chaux-de-Fonds in the
canton of Neuchatel. The historic seat of Swiss
watchmaking and named on the UNESCO
World Heritage List for its exceptional watchmaking
town planning, La Chaux-de-Fonds
provides BALL Watch with access to a sophisticated
industrial fabric and highly skilled
personnel. By maintaining the United States
as its historical reference market and after
having implanted a strong presence in Asia,
BALL Watch is now focusing its development
in Europe, the Middle East and South America.

Watches for the challenge and conquest with absolute performance as ultimate reference
A spirit of adventure, a love of a challenge, endurance and no-nonsense aesthetics: these
are the common denominators of BALL watches. These robust timepieces express an authentic
strength of character and are capable of exceptional performance. They are equipped with unparalleled
technical capabilities that enable them to confront the most adverse conditions with
complete peace of mind for the wearer. Their classic design and their natural elegance personify
the most remarkable technical exploits in a completely understated manner.
The names of its collections have been selected by BALL Watch to honor the old railroad heroes:
n Engineer Hydrocarbon
n Engineer Master II
n Engineer II
n Conductor
n Trainmaster
n Fireman
The BALL watches are certified «Swiss made»
and house mechanical movements based on
the ETA calibers onto which can be grafted
numerous additional modules. The extraordinary
strength of BALL watches is reflected in particular
by their shock resistance, their defense
against magnetic fields and their water resistance.
Real signature of all BALL watches,
the dial indexes and the hands are fitted with
micro tubes of luminous 3H gas. Ensuring
perfect visibility even in the deepest darkness,
this state-of-the-art Swiss technology requires
no external source of light or energy while
being up to 100 times more efficient than
conventional luminous paints.
At the dawn of the 21 st century, BALL Watch
has placed the legitimacy of its watchmaking
expertise at the service of all explorers, sports-
people and great actors of the civil society
and has made of their most emblematic representatives
its ambassadors within the BALL
Explorers Club. In the same way that the
American railroads had constantly pushed
further west in their conquest of the New World,
these outstanding figures are involved in pushing
the boundaries of knowledge and taking up the
great challenges of our time.
Today, more than ever, BALL Watch is continuing
its journey and asserting its role as a key protagonist
in the evolution of watchmaking history.

Origins
Triggering event in 1891: Disaster of
Kipton, Ohio (USA), with the collision of two
trains due to the inaccuracy of one of the engineer’s
watches
Founder of the company: Webster Clay Ball
(1847-1922), named Chief Time Inspector of
the American Railroads
Establishment of watch inspection system
and strict standard time recommendations of
such validity that they formed the basis of the
COSC chronometer certification system
Since then, BALL is an American Official
Railroad Standard Watch and stands for
accurate time!
Brand essence
Motto: «Since 1891, accuracy under ad -
verse conditions»
Unique Selling Point: «Luminosity technology
that allows our ultimate explorer watches
to conquer all night activities.»
«RR» logo stands for Rail Road
Philosophy
Our goal is to be on the wrist of every
direct, no nonsense life adventurer in the
search of his or her destiny . We are single-
minded in our commitment to this vision. At
BALL Watch Company, we are focused to
build the mightiest, superior watches that
endure all adverse conditi ons. Along the
process, we faithfully create a family enter -
prise that genuinely fosters our humanity and
have fun in our endeavors.
BALL Watch Basics

Sectional view of an anti-magnetic case
Luminosity
The dials and hands of BALL watches are fitted with
self-powered gas micro tubes which enable the time to be
read under all circumstances, even in the most extreme
conditions. Our 3 H (tritium) micro gas light technology
glows up to 100 times brighter than luminous paints
for up to 25 years. They do not require char ging from
any outside light source or power source. However , the
brightness of 3 H micro gas lights will deteriorate over the
years. The encapsulated tritium gas poses no risk to the
wearer over the life of the watch and enables the wearer
to read the watch quickly and safely.
Water resistance
The water resistance of BALL watches ranges
by collection. The Trainmaster and Conductor series
begin at 30m / 100ft. The Engineer II and Fireman
series are 100m / 330ft. The Engineer Master II series
ranges from 100m / 330ft to 300m / 1,000ft. And
finally, the Engineer Hydrocarbon series begins at
300m / 1,000ft and goes up to 3,000m / 9,850ft for
the DeepQUEST model. The Engineer Hydrocarbon
series also boasts a special crown protection system to
further ensure water resistance in rough environments.
Anti-magnetic
The precision of automatic watches is easily af fected
by the magnetic fields to which we are subject on an almost
constant basis in our everyday lives. According to
the accepted watchmaking standards, an automatic watch
is deemed «anti-magnetic» providing its movement withstands
a magnetic field of at least 4,800 A/m without its
precision then being affected by more than 30 seconds a
day. Our anti-magnetic collections employ a special case
design constructed with corrosion resistant ferrite stain -
less steel materials and are specially equipped with an
inner soft iron jacket consisting of a back plate, a ring
surrounding the movement and the dial. The Engineer
Hydrocarbon series far surpasses the common standard
with a magnetic tolerance up to 12,000A/m.
Technology
Shock resistance
Built with the highest quality standards in mind,
every BALL watch under goes rigorous testing pro -
cedures to verify its impecc able shock resistance up
to 5,000Gs for the whole BALL collection and up to
7,500Gs for the major part of the Engineer Hydrocarbon
series.
Cold temperature endurance
BALL Watch Company has engineered time-
pieces with special lubrication of specially blended
Swiss watch oils that give the watches, and especially
the Engineer Hydrocarbon series, an operating tempera -
ture range from -40°C to 60°C (-40°F to 140°F). Move-
ment oil plays a vital role in every mechanical move-
ment. It acts as lubricant that reduces the friction between
contact surfaces of the diferent small components within.
Without the lubricant, the friction created would wear out
the movement and adversely affect its accuracy.
Movement
All BALL watches are equipped with Swiss
movements based ETA. Thanks to a strong
collaboration with the Swiss watchmaking industry,
BALL Watch adds several functions to basis engine.
Crown protection system
The crown, particularly if it is not a screw-down
crown, is among the most at risk parts of a watch. For
this reason, almost all the BALL watches use screwdown
crowns. Furthermore, a special crown protection
system was designed for the Engineer Hydrocarbon
series to guarantee its superior water and shock resis -
tance. A protective plate is placed around the crown,
which also ensures the crown must been screwed down
to its original secure position after time adjustment.

Patented folding buckle
Exclusively available for the Engineer Hydrocarbon
series, the BALL patented triple folding buckle with extension
system performs with several assets. For an extreme
resistance and a long term quality, the buckle is manufactured
in a unique block of stainless steel. For comfort, the
balance of the clasp is perfect, the folding elements are
equally divided under the buckle cover and a 22mm extension
system on both sides of the bracelet allows an er gonomic
fit on every type of sport equipment. The buckle and
the extension can be opened with one hand. The closure
works with a mechanical lock which resists to powerful
traction forces. Apart from the technology BALL Watch
has made an esthetic and an anti-allergic buckle.
Amortiser ® anti-shock system
Any significant shock can result in sudden oscillations
in the rotor of an automatic movement, leading to
extensive damage or even causing the watch to stop. Additionally,
the high inertia of the oscillating weight of an automatic
caliber can distract the wearer when playing certain
sports. The revolutionary, patented and BALL’s exclusive
Amortiser ® system protects the movement against extreme
shocks. This micro-mechanical marvel is comprised of an
anti-magnetic protection ring, enveloping the movement to
absorb shocks, and a rotor locking mechanism. The wearer
can lock the watch movement’s oscillating mass when required
using the form of an airplane propeller on the case
back. This ingenious system protects the mechanism from
both lateral and frontal shocks. The Engineer Hydrocarbon
Spacemaster Orbital has been the first model of BALL
Watch to benefit from this technological innovation.
Helium System Patented
In order to avoid the excess of internal pressure in
a watch due to the helium molecules, a helium release
valve needs to allow gases to escape as the watch resurfaces
after deep-sea diving. A world first in watchma-
king, BALL Watch has been able to incorporate an automatic
helium release valve directly into the crown. This
patented BALL innovation has eradicated a potential
surface liable to warp under the effects of water pressure,
thereby improving the timepiece’s water resistance
even further. The Engineer Hydrocarbon NEDU
has been the first watch to be fitted with this new major
technological innovation for diving watches.
Technology
DLC
Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings provide
superior scratch resistance and longevity. Metals coated
with DLC exhibit impressive hardness, low friction,
high resistance to wear, and even electrical insulation.
Research shows that DLC coating dramatically
improves the performance and life of any material.
TMT
The BALL TMT movement powers the world’s
first mechanical thermometer from -35°C to 45°C
(-31°F to 113°F) wrist watch. The TMT movement incorporates
a spiral bimetallic thermometer to measure
temperature with incredible accuracy. The outside edge
of the spiral is pinned to the frame and a pointer is
connected to the center. As the temperature increases
the spiral winds up, deflecting the pointer clockwise.
GMT & Worldtime functions
In watchmaking, the GMT movement provides
a vital function to modern-day travelers: timing two
locations on one wrist. With a 24-hour second time
zone that is easily changed depending on the wearer’s
location, BALL GMT watches are unique. To further
enhance the readability, the second time zone display
has incorporated our Swiss micro gas light tubes. Most
of our GMT collections feature the world’s only selfilluminated
second time zone, not only the hour hand,
but also the hour itself is traced across the dial.
To accompany global travelers, BALL Watch
Company has also developed and manufactured a special
module grafted onto basic calibers. This module
adds a remarkable Worldtime function to the move -
ment. The central hands display the local time, while
a 24-hour disk rotating automatically in the opposite
direction simultaneously indicates the time in 24 different
time zones.

«Engineer Master II» Series
The ultimate diving and sport watch collection with illuminated rotating inner bezel
The «Engineer Master II» series salutes these
fine men who were the trains’ engineers with a variety
of no-nonsense watches which are robust as well as
aesthetically functional and deliver remarkable performance.
The engineer’s primary duty was to drive
the train. They were also responsible for interpreting
train orders and signals as well as railroad rules and
regulations. They inspected the locomotives before a
run and synchronized time with the conductor.
This collection includes especially a wide range of diving
timepieces that comply with the many requirements
imposed by deep-sea diving. It incorporates superb
innovations such as the «Engineer Master II Diver» that
features an internal rotating bezel used to count down
dive time using an extremely precise notch system, the
«Engineer Master II Skindiver», an audacious combination
of an undeniably vintage design echoing the 1960s
with contemporary watchmaking codes and techniques,
or the «Engineer Master II Diver Worldtime», an elegant
solution for the busy travelers.
With the «Engineer Master II» collection, BALL Watch
has confirmed its undeniable place among diving-watch
designers. The «Engineer Master II» watches can be
«Engineer II» Series
The sport-elegant collection
The «Engineer II» collection includes timepieces
that express an authentic strength of character and are
capable of exceptional performance. They are equipped
with unparalleled technical capabilities that enable them
to confront the most adverse conditions with complete
peace of mind for the wearer. Their classic design and
their natural elegance personify the most remarkable
technical exploits in a completely understated manner.
They integrate the common denominators of all BALL
watches: spirit of adventure, love of challenge, endurance
and no-nonsense aesthetics. The «Engineer II»
watches honor the old railroad heroes that were these
locomotive mechanics of the past. The locomotive
engineer was a real hero in olden days who took care
of its engine with passion. He was the one who decided
of the color of its engines, polished the coppers and
proudly dolled it up. He was also allowed to alter the
sound of the whistle by plac ing wooden stops in it to
create a unique and distinct sound. This had a side
benefit for the engineer. His wife or landlady would
learn to recognize that distinct sound and she knew he
would be home soon, so she would have dinner waiting
for him when he arrived.
BALL Collection
«Trainmaster» Series
The classical railroad heritage watch collection
Born in the 19 th century at the start of the epic era of
the American railroads, BALL watches are synonymous
with precision, quality and reliability. As early as 1891,
the founder of the company that bears his name, Webster
Clay Ball instigated the first railroad chronometric standards
that were later used as the reference for Swiss
chronometric certification that is still in use to this day.
The «Trainmaster» collection celebrates the railroad
masters who supervised the smooth operation of the
networks. They handled many aspects of the various
railroads including the implementation of company poli-
cies, supervision of the trains, depots and employees,
management of test runs and safety programs, cost
management, and accident investigations, to name just
these activities.
The models in this collection naturally echo the first
watches signed «BALL’s Standard» that ensured train
safety thanks to their precision and reliability. In the
absolute respect for the values of precision, reliability
and tradition of the BALL heritage, the «Trainmaster»
timepieces are a brilliant reinterpretation of the time -
less attributes of elegance, lightness and simplicity that
personify this classic BALL collection.
«Conductor» Series
The vintage tonneau-shape watch collection based on 1920’s BALL models
The «Conductor» collection truly represents
the heritage of the compa ny founded in 1891 by
Webster Clay Ball and initially linked to the history of
the American railroads. This series is the most authentic
and most faithful to the origins of BALL Watch. It
pays homage to the train conductors of the golden age
of rail, the railroad counterparts of ships’ captains. At
the time, the train conducto r played a crucial role in
providing an exact measure ment of time to ensure
the trains ran to schedule. They also collected fares
when folks boarded the train where there was no
ticket agent In so doing, they actively contributed to
improving rail safety and held the ultimate dignity.
BALL Watch has combined in this collection the vintage
lines of its first watches with the aesthetic codes and
technical performances of contemporary watchmaking.
The retro characteristics of the «Conductor» timepieces
are found instinctively in the tonneau-shape. Indeed,
the first wristwatch designed BALL Watch in the 1920s
was already based on a tonneau form. The anti-reflective
sapphire crystal is also the result of a technical feat in
order to create its convex form. The transparent caseback,
also fitted with a curved sapphire crystal, sits
perfectly on the wrist. All these elements combined
immediately imbue the «Conductor» collection with
its strong identity.
n Shock resistance up to 5,000Gs
n Water resistance up to 50m/160ft
BALL Collection
«Fireman» Series
The entry level range of quality watches with simple design
The «Fireman» collection is a modern combat
timepiece that embodies the railroad practicality. Robust
models with simple design, these watches celebrate the
hard workers of yesteryear: the locomotive firemen. The
fireman was the heart of the locomotive, the person who
kept the whole machine moving. Without his efforts
loading coal into the hungry machine and maintaining
the many mechanical parts of the train «en route», rail -
road transport would have been impossible.
Since their inception, railroads have been an integral
part of modern warfare, often deciding the success or
failure of entire campaigns. And firemen, working
directly in front of the firebox of military trains, were
at the most risk. It should not come as a surprise, there -
fore, that railr oading, military service and, by exten -
sion, watchmaking share many similarities: the same
adverse conditions that pose the greatest challenges
to people as well as the same quest for precision and
nononsense timepieces with few frills but lots of rugged
