A Loving Legacy
A legacy is a wonderful thing. Here at the Sheridan Senior Center we offer lots of opportunity to cherish
those legacies. One of the ways that we celebrate the legacy of individuals and families is through our Loving
Legacy Endowment Fund. This endowment continues to grow for the benefit of those we serve here at the
Center. It is an investment in our community.
The money earned from the Loving Legacy Endowment Fund will be used to keep our doors open,
transportation up and running, our meals delicious and nutritious, services for those in the home, adult day
services for loved ones, and healthy activities in place here at the Center.
Our endowment is a fund whose contributions are all tax deductible. Proceeds from the fund are used
solely for the operation of the Sheridan Senior Center. It is managed by the Senior Center's Board who oversee
the collection of principle and the disbursement of interest.
So why do we need the Loving Legacy? In this age of fluctuating revenues to non-profit agencies, the
Loving Legacy Endowment Fund is a perfect opportunity to make a contribution that will have a lasting and
stabilizing impact on local programs for all Sheridan County seniors. With an increasing number of people
getting older, organizations that serve elders must think about how they are going to meet their needs. The
Loving Legacy Endowment is a strategy to become more financially independent and less reliant on the
uncertainties associated with federal and state funds. It is the Center's hope that through this endowment, the
doors will always be open in the future.
So how do you get involved? Only you know your personal situation and financial needs. We would be
happy to meet with you to discuss any additional questions you might have or to help determine the best way for
you to become involved. Your contributions will provide ongoing financial support and serve as meaningful
ways for individuals, families or foundations to leave a lasting legacy. Call Carmen Rideout, the Executive
Director, or myself to set up a non-obligation personal, information session at 307-672-2240. We wish you the
best this Spring!
Senior Center Endowment Goal
The Sheridan Senior Center Board of Directors is enthused to reach the organization’s Endowment
Fund Goal of $2 million dollars! Growing the Endowment Fund is a strategy the Sheridan Senior Center
must take to become more financially independent and less reliant on uncertainties associated with
federal and state funds. Endowment dollars will generate income, a portion of which is available year after
year, while the principal continues to build the fund. The Board believes raising endowment will help to
ensure that money to provide services will be available well into the future.
What is an Endowment Fund? It is a fund of money, the principal which is held in perpetuity, invested
and from which an organization may use only earnings. Money is contributed to provide a continuing
income for support or maintenance of services. The endowment may be general or designated for a
specific program. The growth of this fund will enable the Senior Center to develop and sustain a stable
organization, with the capacity to grow and develop as the needs increase and continue to change.
The Board through its Finance Committee oversees the policies and procedures associated with
the endowment fund and assures that the financial performance of the investments are satisfactory. The
Endowment Committee is responsible for raising the money. Committee Members are happy to talk with
anyone that has questions or is considering making a gift. If you have questions please call 307-672-2240
and ask for Rindy West, the Development Director.
Ellen and Frank Kawulok, Jr.
My husband, Frank Kawulok Jr. grew up on the family ranch in
Sheridan County. He managed the Job Service office in Sheridan for
many years. Frank was a member of the Founding Board of Directors
when the Sheridan Senior Center was first incorporated in 1973. He
was also part of a group that organized the Senior Citizens
Coordinating Council prior to that time and served through the year
that the Senior Center building was built in 1980. He was very proud to
have had a small part in the launching of such a successful endeavor.
I grew up and was educated in upstate New York. I taught at
Sheridan High School for many years. I first became interested in the
Sheridan Senior Center through my husband. Frank and I watched as
the Sheridan Senior Center grew and provided more services to more
people in the community. My mother, Dorothy Herzhauser was a
retired CPA from upstate New York and Florida. She was impressed
with the Senior Center's facilities and the level of services it provides.
Ellen and Frank Kawulok, Jr.
The Sheridan Senior Center is instrumental in providing
Sheridan area seniors with healthy meals, activities and
companionship. The ability of our seniors to remain in their homes
without becoming isolated is priceless. The Sheridan Senior Center is an awesome organization. I am
committed to supporting the endowment fund now and in the future as a gift from all three of us.
Emery & Betty Matthews
Betty states, “My husband of 63 years
(Emery) and I would go past the Center and say
wonder if we’ll ever be old enough to go there? And
we became it and now they can’t keep us out!”
Betty says it started out with food and
camaraderie. Emery’s vision failed, so Betty drove
them to the Senior Center and then when her
eyesight failed too, they started using the MiniBus.
They then took advantage of all the programs the
Center has to offer.
Betty at one point thought how can I do this?
And yet she continues still. The activities and
Betty and Emery Matthews
programs are so wonderful. She clearly
remembers in 2009 a late night game show at the
Sheridan Senior Center on her birthday. A group of
high school youth was attending. Betty showed
them how to play Cribbage. They then surprised her
later with a birthday cake and a gift—a portable
makes you want to come! You look forward to
coming…even if it’s sub-zero. There are so many
wonderful activities from physical fitness, food,
bingo, table tennis, shooting pool, crafts, planned
trips, and things I have inadvertently left out!”
