Tips for Finding a Great
River Cruise Vacation
The travel industry’s hottest new trend, river cruising, is finding a niche
as an alternative to mainstream cruises and megaships. With hundreds of
options to sail the amazing waterways of Europe (the Danube, Douro, Rhine,
Rhone, Seine and Moselle Rivers) and exotic destinations, via the Yangtze,
Mekong and Nile, small-ship cruising is becoming one of the most popular
ways for Americans to both experience and explore the world. Jerry & Gwen Lee with an ancient Croatian
Part of the appeal of the modern river cruise is that it delivers a cruise unlike
other cruise experiences. Instead of thousands of passengers, there might
be 150 on a river cruise vessel. Instead of miles and miles of ocean views (if
you have an outward-facing room), 100 percent of modern river cruise ship
staterooms face outside, many with floor-to-ceiling windows, affording
panoramic views at every moment of villages, castles and vineyards. And,
while deals drive megaship bookings, river cruising provides travelers a
different value: A destination-focused vacation where in-port excursions
and activities, as well as drinks and dining are included in the price of the
cruise.
“Each time cruisers disembark from our contemporary river cruise ships,
they are in a new location, often within walking distance of the village square
or city center,” says Patrick Clark, managing director of Avalon Waterways.
“Our cruisers can not only experience metropolitan areas like Paris, Vienna,
Budapest or Ho Chi Minh City, they’ll cruise to off-the-beaten-path gems
such as Bruges, Bernkastel and Durnstein, where travelers can take part in
included excursions or even rent a bike to explore on their own.”
For those interested in embarking on a river cruise for the first time, Avalon
Waterways has created the following tips to choose the perfect, intimate
escape:
New, Newer or Newest Ship?
Clark says there’s a whole new group of river cruise ships that has emerged
since 2004. Older ships offer travelers limited space and views (with small
windows that don’t open). The new class of river cruise ship–including the
industry’s first “suite ships”–features large, contemporary spaces, as well as
floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows that open wide to enjoy the fresh air
and magnificent landscapes.
Room to Relax and Unwind.
With a new class of ships from
which to choose the perfect cruise experience, travelers should pay
attention to the square footage of their stateroom. While some ships feature
300-square-foot suites, others offer less than 130-square-foot spaces. Know
what you’re getting when you book (172- to 200-square-foot staterooms
come standard with Avalon’s fleet).
Choice and Customization.
How important is choice on your cruise? Are you looking for choice in
dining options, choice in your ship, choice in bed configuration, choice in
enrichment activities and even choice in rivers and destinations? Do you
want to customize your trip before you go? Go with a company that offers
you the choice and personalization you crave.
Culture and Cuisine.
While most river cruise ships do not offer a variety of restaurants like
megaships, it doesn’t mean they don’t offer a menu of options (something
you should look for when you book). If you like light fare with grilled lunches
or a la carte, local chef offerings, you should have that option. If you want
to experience drinks off the ship at a local pub or grill, outdoor lunches on
board, go for it. Choose a cruise and/or cruise line that marries cuisine and
culture while catering to your dietary interests and needs.
Discovery by Your Design
On a river cruise, land programs should not be an afterthought. And
these experiences should be offered as part of the inclusive price of your
cruise. From guided tours to a customized sightseeing adventure, choose
a company with a great reputation that offers a plethora of experiences.
Also, consider booking a themed itinerary if you’re interested in exploring
a passion like food, wine, music, art, photography or history on your
vacation.
Timeless Wonders of Vietnam,
Cambodia & the Mekong 2013
There can be no more striking cultural contrast between bustling Vietnam
and the tranquility of Cambodia. From Ho Chi Minh City, through the
Mekong Delta so rich in human life and endeavor, to the diverse countryside
of Cambodia, you’ll discover two countries, two cultures, and two ways of
life linked by one river, the Mekong, that have shaped these nations.
14 Nights / 17 Days • River Cruise Tour from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Vietnam
January 22 - February 7, 2013 • River Orchid – New Ship! • Tour Manager: Geri Ichimura
The Uniworld Experience – Uniworld offers an intimate
encounter inside Vietnam and Cambodia that other river cruise
lines can’t match. You’ll never descend onto a village, market, or
important cultural site as part of a massive tour group. Instead,
you’ll be part of small groups, with one local guide for every
twenty guests. You will meet the people and visit the places that
make up these fascinating destinations. In addition, you’ll travel
to floating villages and sites by way of a luxurious sampan, so
you’ll have a genuine experience every step of the way.
The River Orchid – Uniworld’s commitment to intimacy
extends to your shipboard experience as well. The River Orchid,
Uniworld’s brand new ship plying the Mekong, boasts just 30
deluxe staterooms, and no more than 60 guests at a time. This
means that you will be treated to gracious and personalized
service. The staff onboard the River Orchid will be there to ensure
you have everything you need—morning, noon, and night.
Whether you are sitting on the spacious sun deck being served
a refreshing complimentary beverage as you watch the passing
scenery or you are listening to an enlightening lecture, your staff
will make your stay as special and comfortable as can be.
You’ll also notice extra special Uniworld touches throughout
your journey, from VIP check-in service at all onshore hotels
to luxurious sampans that let you tour the river in style, to
relaxing with fresh fruit and tea after your onshore excursions.
There’s simply no better way to experience the magic of these
destinations along the Mekong River.
Deluxe Staterooms – Beautiful riverview staterooms have
hotel beds draped in fine linens along with a pillow menu. Other
stateroom amenities include: vanity, built-in closet and safe,
individual climate control and bottled water. Bathrooms are
stocked with fine bath and body products, hair dryer, bathrobe,
and slippers.
Imperial Waterways of Russia 2013
12 Nights / 15 Days • River Cruise Tour from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Russia
July 2 - 16, 2013 • River Victoria • Escorted from Honolulu • Tour Manager: Mike Hama
4 Nights in Moscow Along the Volga River: Uglich, Yaroslavl, Lake Rybinsk, Goritsy,
Lake Onega, Kizhi Island and Mandrogi Plus 3 Nights in St. Petersburg
Follow the Path of Peter the Great
and Discover the Heart of Russia…
The Volga River, Europe’s largest and longest
waterway, holds a special place in Russian history
and in the hearts and minds of the Russian people.
An important aquatic “highway” since Medieval
times, the Volga has long served as a major route
of trade, settlement, and conquest. Peter the
Great sailed along the Volga from Moscow to St.
Petersburg approximately 300 years ago on a quest
to bring Russia out of the Dark Ages. And centuries’
worth of Russian music and literature reflect the
people’s deep feeling for the river.
Now it’s your turn to discover the rich history and
traditions along the imperial waterways of Russia.
Your journey starts in Moscow, where you’ll stand
in awe of world-famous sights such as Red Square;
the Kremlin; and iconic, onion-domed St. Basil’s
Cathedral. Cruise along the Golden Ring to some
of Russia’s most beautiful cities—including Uglich
and Yaroslavl, which are known for their white
stone churches and gorgeous monasteries. Visit
UNESCO-designated Kizhi Island, and experience
daily life in Russia with visits to the Children’s House
of Arts and Crafts, and Mandrogi, a reconstructed
Russian village. Your journey ends in enchanting
St. Petersburg with visits to Catherine’s Palace
and the Hermitage Museum, and a viewing of a
breathtaking ballet, all of which will bring you up
close to the rich traditions and royal history of
Russia.
DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
Day 1: Sat, June 29 – Depart Honolulu via Hawaiian Air Flight #449 at
12:50 pm.
Day 2: Sun, June 30 – Arrive Kansai Airport, Osaka, Japan at 6:00 pm. After
entry formalities, transfer by coach to hotel in Kyoto, Japan. New Miyako Hotel (2
Nights). A group dinner has been arranged at hotel. (D)
Day 3: Mon, July 1 – After an included American buffet breakfast, full day
sightseeing of Kyoto. Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern
Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally
known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga
Yoshimitsu. Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa
Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). His grandson Iemitsu
completed the castle’s palace buildings 23 years later and further expanded the
castle by adding a five story castle. After the Tokugawa Shogunate fell in 1867,
Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace. Its palace buildings are arguably the
best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan’s feudal era, and
the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994. Kiyomizudera
(literally “Pure Water Temple”) is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It
was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of
Kyoto, and derives its name from the fall’s pure waters. In 1994, the temple was
added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. Today’s hands-on experience
is “Surikomi Yuzen (brush dyed Yuzen)”, which is one of Kyoto’s traditional craft
“Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing” techniques. Since the patterns are dyed by placing a paper
stencil over a piece of fabric, such as a handkerchief, you can make an authentic
piece, even if this is your first time. They have over 500 different types of patterns
to try – your very own original work will be a perfect memento for yourself or a
gift for someone. Return to hotel in Kyoto. Recommendations for dinner will be
made by our Japanese tour guide. (B, L)
Day 4: Tue, July 2 – After breakfast we will checkout from hotel. Half-day
sightseeing tour of Nara. Todaiji (“Great Eastern Temple”) is one of Japan’s most
famous and historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara. Todaiji’s main
hall, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall) is the world’s largest wooden building.
The massive building houses one of Japan’s largest bronze statues of Buddha
(Daibutsu). Kasuga Taisha is Nara’s most celebrated shrine. It was established
at the same time as the capital and is dedicated to the deity responsible for the
protection of the city. Nara Park is a large park in central Nara. The park is home
to hundreds of freely roaming deer. Considered in Shinto to be messengers of the
gods, Nara’s nearly 1200 deer have become a symbol of the city and have been
designated a natural treasure. Transfer to Kobe Pier & embark Sun Princess®.
Enjoy a group dinner aboard the Sun Princess®. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Wed, July 3 – After breakfast aboard ship, board your awaiting
motorcoach for a full day of sightseeing in Osaka. We will tour a sake brewery
and enjoy a tasting. A tour of Osaka Castle is followed by a visit to Dotonbori.
One of Osaka’s most popular tourist destinations, this street runs parallel to the
Dotonbori canal. It is a popular shopping and entertainment district and is also
known as a food destination. Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade and the surrounding
Shinsaibashi area is Osaka’s premiere shopping center. Approximately 600 m
long, this area is unique as it combines chain retail stores and trendy boutiques
with expensive department stores and top designer fashion labels. After an
included lunch at a local restaurant, return to ship.
Established in 1953, as the world center for documentation, research, education, and commemoration
of the Holocaust, today Yad Vashem is a dynamic and vital place. As the Jewish people’s living
memorial to the Holocaust, Yad Vashem safeguards the memory of the past and imparts its meaning
to be built over the home of John the Baptist’s parents. Lunch is included while you enjoy a beautiful
view of the valley and the surrounding wooded hills. This evening, join your fellow travelers for
Day 11: Fri, March 15 – Jerusalem, Jordan Valley Border Crossing, Petra, Jordan
This morning you travel to the Jordan Valley, crossing the border into Jordan. Travel the Desert
Highway to the ancient city of Petra.
Day 12: Sat, March 16 – Petra, Wadi Rum
Enjoy a morning tour of the remarkable stone-carved city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site,
and one of the new Wonders of the World. A treasure of the ancient world, Petra was “hidden” behind
rugged mountains prior to its discovery in 1812 after being lost for over 300 years. Explore this
breathtaking city, carved from sandstone by the Nabataeans, with an expert guide and learn about
the importance of Petra to the ancient trade routes, the history of its prominence and decline, its
rediscovery, and efforts at preservation. This afternoon, depart for the immense desert of Wadi Rum,
stunning in its natural beauty and home of the famous film Lawrence of Arabia. Experience desert
life and learn about the fascinating history of the Bedouin people who have lived for generations in
the Wadi Rum’s stark, fragile and unspoiled desert. This evening, experience the flavors of the region
with a delightful dinner at a popular local restaurant. (B, D)
Day 13: Sun, March 17 – Petra, Madaba, Mt. Nebo, Amman
Travel along the Kings Highway, an ancient route from biblical times, to the city of Madaba, the “City
of Mosaics.” Visit the church of St. George to see the famous 6th century Byzantine mosaic map of
the region, one of the oldest in existence, and the museum where many other spectacular mosaic
examples are on display. Visit a local mosaic school to learn the history of this ancient art and how to
create your very own mosaic piece. You will also visit Mt. Nebo, where Moses saw the Promised Land
– present day Israel – and is believed to be laid to rest. Later, arrive in Amman, known as the “White
City” because of white limestone used to construct the majority of the buildings. (B, D)
Day 14: Mon, March 18 – Amman, Jerash, Jordan Valley Border Crossing, Tel Aviv, Israel
Travel the quiet valley among the mountains of Gilead to the city of Jerash – the “Pompeii of the
East.” Step back in time as you tour the ruins with a local guide. Walk through columned streets,
hilltop temples, public squares, and plazas. Archeologists uncovered evidence inside the city walls
indicating Amman was occupied as far back as the Neolithic age over 6,500 years ago. Later, travel
to the Jordan Valley Border Crossing, returning to Israel. Continue to Tel Aviv for your overnight stay.
(B, D)
Day 15: Tue, March 19 – Tel Aviv. Tour Ends. Flight home to Honolulu. (B)
