With Rowan Johnstone - General Manager AFL Canberra
After Round 10 of the AFL Canberra Labor Club Division 1
Premiership, Belconnen and Eastlake share top spot with
32 points each, Ainslie and the Sydney Swans Reserves fill
the remaining two spots in the four, with Queanbeyan and
Tuggeranong both on 3 wins half a game outside.
In Division 2, Queanbeyan are Belconnen are clear leaders
with Eastlake, Tuggeranong and Ainslie fighting for the
remaining two finals spots. Marist remain undefeated in the
Under 18 competition with all teams very much in finals
contention.
After Round 9 in Division 3, ANU and Harman are well clear
of the rest fighting for the final two spots. In Division 4,
Goulburn are a game and a half clear and the rest would
have top four aspirations. After Round 7 of the ACT Women’s
AFL, Eastlake, Ainslie, Tuggeranong and Belconnen hold the
top four positions on the ladder.
On May 29, AFL Canberra, AFL NSW/ACT and the AFL
Canberra Foundation together with Ainslie, Belconnen,
Eastlake, Queanbeyan and the Sydney Swans football clubs
signed a three year agreement providing funding towards
the development of local AFL clubs and the AFL Canberra
competitions.
The AFL Canberra Development Fund secures personnel and
financial resources for investment in Tuggeranong, Gungahlin
and Weston Creek as well as priority growth areas in NSW.
Development Plan priorities include introduction of Division
2 and Under 18 teams from Gungahlin by 2010, maintenance
of Division 1 teams and addition of at least one other team
by 2011 and provision of adequate resources and programs
for umpiring over the next three years. The commitment of
stakeholders to this is unlikely to occur any where else but
in Canberra, where clubs are prepared to put these sort of
resources forward to secure the future of a local competition.
The Gungahlin Jets are now seeking Division 2 and Under
18 coaches for the 2010 season. Appointments in July
will allow the successful applicants to be involved in the
development of playing lists for their first year of entry into
these competitions.
This weekend sees Belconnen hosting the Sydney Swan
Reserves at Manuka on Saturday.
On Sunday, Queanbeyan are home to Tuggeranong and
Eastlake hosting Ainslie at Manuka. This Sunday is the last
match that the South East Region Academy of Sport team
will play in this year’s Under 18 competition. A win over
Eastlake will see them having won 4 from their 6 matches,
a loss three and three, a great result for a team playing
together for the first time in this trial program. If there is
enough support from AFL Canberra, Sapphire Coast AFL
League and their participating clubs, a full-time team in
2010 is a real possibility. Add this team to the new Gungahlin
Jets team, next season could see an eight team competition
in the Under 18’s, further strengthening this competition as
the best in NSW/ACT and a showcase of the talent that is the
future of local footy and what this region has to offer as a
pathway to the AFL.
Last week the 2009 AFL Canberra Representative squad
was announced. Coaches Steve Mahar and fellow selectors
Nathan Clarke, Michael Horne and Anthony Bourke have
selected the following players in their 40 man squad for this
year’s representative fixture against AFL Sydney on July 26 at
the new Blacktown Olympic Park.
MATT
PORTER
After beating undefeated Eastlake last week and moving
top of the table, it looks as if last years runners up,
Belconnen, are determined to go one better this year.
And if consistent performers like Matthew Porter keep
up their good form, it’s going to be hard to bet against
the Magpies avenging last season’s heart-breaking loss.
Playing every match for Belconnen in ’09 so far, 25yr
old Porter has stood out for the Magpies. With his huge
stature, standing 198cm tall and weighing in at 110kgs,
it’s easy to see Porter is making a big impact on the
Division 1 competition.
The ruck man puts his great start to ’09 down to a big
pre-season. “I had a great preparation for the year, I
trained really hard and I think that has meant I can get
around the field a bit better this year” he said.
The hard work seems to have paid of for Porter, who was
recently selected in the ACT representative side along
with 9 other Belconnen players, which included stars like
Andrew Ainger and Lexie Bennett.
The Canberra local has played his whole career at
Belconnen, rising through the junior ranks, up to second
division then through to Division 1. Porter was part
of the losing Grand final team last year and said that
gave him extra motivation coming into the new season.
“That was a massive disappointment for us, but we
have moved on and I think it has spurred us on. I think
it gave me personally more incentive to train and work
hard, and helped me push myself harder in pre-season”
he said.
By Joel Diggins
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
After a solid start to the season Belconnen hit a rough
patch, losing 2 games in a row against Ainslie and
Eastlake. But the Magpies have turned that around,
winning 5 games on the trot, defeating top placed
Eastlake and third placed Ainslie in the process.
But Porter said the Magpies aren’t getting carried away.
“We have a lot of work to do, trying to get everything
100%. There’s a long way to go in the season yet, and
we are just aiming to keep improving as the season
goes” he said.
The Magpies will look to keep the good run of form
continuing when they take on last seasons Premiers
Sydney at Manuka oval.
“We have a lot of work
to do, trying to get
everything 100%.
TIM
INKSTER
When Ainslie secured Tim Inkster in January of this year,
they knew they had recruited a very valuable asset to
their club.
The 29 year old has found his way into the AFL Canberra
competition after successful stints in the VFL and SANFL,
two of the most highly regarded football leagues outside
of the AFL.
Playing in the TAC cup as an under 18 for the Ballarat
rebels, Inkster was then picked up by VFL side the North
Ballarat Roosters before relocating to South Australia.
Inkster, a medium forward who can also go into the
midfield when required, won a premiership with SANFL
team Woodville West Torrens in 2006 in his best year
of football to date. In the same year he also made the
SANFL team of the year and finished 5th in the leagues’
best and fairest count.
Not surprisingly Ainslie Football Manager Corey Saitta
can’t speak highly enough of the new recruit, saying his
professionalism and insight into the game has been a
huge gain for the club.
“Tim has slotted in beautifully to the club” he said. “He’s
quite informed as well as a being a great person and
player…he’s instinctive, and has shown outstanding
character.”
It is no wonder Ainslie were keen to get their
hands on the skilled journeyman. Not only is he an
experienced and skilled player, he also possesses a
wealth of knowledge that has come from playing under
some excellent coaches and with some elite players
By Jack Baker
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
throughout his career.
Saitta say’s Ainslie knew right from the start what they
were getting with Tim.
“We knew from day one that Tim was going to be more
than just a player for us.” He said. “He’s brought football
knowledge with him and is very good at giving direct
instructions to players so that they understand...he
always places the team before himself.”
So far this season Inkster has kicked sixteen goals, a
handy return from the opening ten rounds, consolidating
Ainslie’s high regard for him and helping the club to
third spot on the ladder.
With a fantastic win in the wet over Belconnen earlier
in the season and a draw with Eastlake, Inkster’s Ainslie
have shown they have what it takes to match it with
the top two powerhouses of the competition. However
if they want to be serious contenders for the flag they
must avoid slip ups like last weekends narrow defeat to
the Hawks.
When they run out this weekend against the Demons,
Ainslie will be relying on all of Inkster’s experience and
knowledge and them some to stop an Eastlake side
stinging from a last round defeat.
“He’s brought football knowledge
with him and is very good at giving
direct instructions to players so
that they understand...he always
places the team before himself.”
ACT WOMEN DO
US PROUD IN
PERTH
The AFL Women’s National Championships were held
over the Queens Birthday long weekend, with the ACT
putting on some good performances.
The ACT faced a tough draw, coming up against the
power house Victorian team in their first game of the
round robin style competition. Our girls went down to
the Big V in a brave battle which was not reflected by
the final score 17-10-112 to 2-2-14.
The team soon turned their attention to their next
contest with Queensland. In a disappointing but
impressive showcase of skill, the ACT squad were
unlucky to come away with the eight point loss.
ACT Head Coach Ossie Terron said he was proud of his
players efforts
“We attacked hard and tried to put points on the board.
Both sides had that attitude which is why it was such a
see-saw game.”
In a disappointing end to the competition, the team
was overpowered by the eventual runner-up Western
Australia. Victoria beat Western Australia in the final
which was a curtain raiser to the West Coast v Geelong
match at Subiaco Oval.
At the completion of the tournament, the All-Australian
team was announced, with Rebecca Hall representing
the ACT. Rebekah Allen was also named as an
All-Australian squad member. Congratulations to both
girls on this fantastic achievement.
Belconnen player and first time ACT Representative
Genevieve Netting said the team performed well in Perth
considering their lack of preparation
By Sarah Bakerr
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
“I think we played well and were very unlucky against
Queensland, but perhaps could have benefited from a
longer preparation, considering some of the other states
have been training together since last year.”
“Its still an awesome effort for such a little state to be in
the top four though”.
A little closer to home, the ACT Women’s League has
reached the half-way point of the season, with no
outright contender for the flag evident.
Ainslie, Eastlake and Tuggeranng are fighting it out at
the top of the ladder after seven rounds, all sitting on
five wins for the season. Belconnen are not far behind,
comfortably occupying fourth position with some gutsy
performances to have four wins on the board.
Riverina, ANU, ADFA and Gungahlin round out the
bottom four respectively.
With seven games remaining for the season, it will be
interesting to see which team will break away from the
pack to make a claim for the top prize.
“We attacked hard and
tried to put points on the
board. Both sides had that
attitude which is why it was
such a see-saw game.”
IN THE BLOOD – CELEBRATING THE RED AND WHITE
THE NEW BOOK FROM JIM MAIN
Jim Main has authored the book ‘In The Blood’, a definitive
history of the Swans over 135 years. This Collectors Edition
book details the journey from the establishment of the South
Melbourne Football club in 1874 to the present day Sydney
Swans. There are few football clubs, of any code in the world,
who have worn the red and white colours longer and have
experienced such a rich history of heartache and jubilation, lean
times and richly rewarding eras over the past 135 years. The
Swans have always worn the red and white with pride, winning
four Victorian Football Association premierships before becoming
one of the eight inaugural VFL clubs in 1897. Swans supporters
can now own a piece of this history with the launch of Jim
Main’s new book, In The Blood – Celebrating the red and white,
to be released in July 2009 and the Inaugural Hall of Fame event
to be held in Melbourne on July 18. To pre-order your limited
edition copy now, visit www.sydneyswans.com.au.
CLUB NEWS Vs
Queanbeyan Football Club
Today’s match against the Tuggeranong Hawks promises to be a
cracker between two sides desperate for a win and a chance to
further their respective aspirations of making the AFL Canberra
finals series for 2009. We welcome the Hawks to Dairy Farmers
Park and look forward to three great games of footy.
Our Volunteer of the Week is Gary Bullivant. Gary has been a
long time volunteer at both levels of the organisation being
President of our Licensed Club and a Sports Trainer of the
Football teams. An incredible amount to of work is required to
manager both voluntary positions and we are indeed fortunate
to have Gary to assist maintain the high standard required to
manager those areas. He receives the Star Q Café and bar Award.
Ladies Team – 2010. The Tigers are looking at fielding a Ladies
Team in 2010 and would welcome assistance in all areas. Please
phone the Tigers Office on 62993467.
A few dates to put in the diary are:
Our next after match function will be on 27 June after the home
match against Ainslie and is being organised by the player’s
leadership group.
Tigers 100 Club Dinner – 15 August. This function also
incorporates Premiership reunions of the 1989 1st and Reserve
Grade teams and also the 1999 1st Grade premiership. An Old
Boys Match will be played the next day against the ACT Super
Rules team. See Allan Mapleson for details.
Tuggeranong Hawks
With the race for the bottom two positions in the top
four hotting up, the Hawks showed last weekend they
want to play finals. With a dogged effort against Ainslie
the boys never gave up all day. Ainslie kept coming but
the determined Hawks hung on in what was a thriller.
Well done to all the players and coaches for a great win
at Greenway. The reserves and U18’s both went down
but still showed they can play good footy and need to
put four quarters together. Unfortunately the 3rd’s had a
loss to a very strong ANU after a close first quarter and
the women’s team had another win which sees them in
a 3 way tie for top spot.
This weekend we travel to Dairy Farmers Park to take on
Queanbeyan who are looking to turn around their loss
from last weekend. Both clubs will be battling hard for
their fourth win of the season and creep closer to the
finals.
Congratulations to Jay “Disco” Kickett for playing his
200th senior game. Jay is a true clubman and selflessly
battles his heart out for TFC.
CLUB NEWS EASTLAKE Vs
Eastlake Football Club
This week Ben Collins will play his 150th senior game
for the club. Ben came to Eastlake in 2001 playing in
the club’s senior premiership that year and has been an
important member of the club ever since. His loyalty
and commitment to the Demons has been outstanding.
According to house mate and team manager Phil Gaynor,
Collo is also a great cook.
Congratulations also to one of Canberra‘s top firemen
(along with Paul Raadts and Joe Box!) in Peter McGrath
who will play his 50th senior game with our club as
will Aaron Rogers. Alex Hayward will play his 50th club
game. Congratulations to all of these players for their
achievements.
Our big Red and Black Ball is quickly coming over the
horizon on 4th July. For details please ring Keith Miller on
62280999. The evening will incorporate our annual 100
Club Dinner and we have a number of new inductees this
year.
Belconnen was too good for us in all grades last weekend
and they proved what a strong club they are particularly
their ability to fight back in difficult situations.
Our sponsor of the week is One Sportswear. The company
is run by Allan Short a former top Manuka player. The club
has had a great relationship with Allan for many years
now and his support is greatly appreciated.
DICKINSON VITAL
TO TIGER
CHANCES
A simple training mishap had the potential to disrupt
Scott Dickinson’s and potentially, Queanbeyan’s season.
The Tiger ruckman fell awkwardly in the lead-up to their
round two clash with Ainslie, breaking his collarbone.
Dickinson recalled his initial uncertainty after the
incident.
“I was just doing some marking work on the ruck bag
and I landed on the back of my shoulder,” he said.
“I heard it crack but I didn’t know how bad it was. They
said I would be out for between six and eight weeks,
depending on how quickly it healed.”
Dickinson missed six matches before he returned in
their round eight triumph over Ainslie. The 25-year-old
admitted it was difficult to watch from the sidelines,
despite staying involved with the side.
“I went to all the team meetings,” he said.
“They also took me up to the Sydney game which was
really good. It’s just annoying standing there watching
from the side.”
During Dickinson’s his lay-off, the Tigers struggled
with only one victory. With the ruckman in the side,
Queanbeyan have won two out of four matches. Last
season Dickinson played in every Queanbeyan victory. A
horror seven match losing streak last season coincided
with Dickinson’s absence due to another injury. Coach
Mark Armstrong said his value could not be underestimated.
“He has been arguably the best big man running around
in the competition over the last 18 months,” Armstrong
said.
“The evidence would suggest that without him playing
Seamus Bromley
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
and us losing, against him playing and us winning is
quite significant.
“He brings a great physical presence. He is a great mark
and gives us first chance to win a lot of clearances. He
is also a developing leader at the club.”
Dickinson has been impressive since returning in round
eight. Armstrong admits he was surprised at Dickinson’s
immediate return to form.
“I was impressed with his marking ability in his first
game back,” Armstrong said.
“I didn’t expect his touch to be as strong as it was,
especially considering he was coming back from a
shoulder injury.”
Queanbeyan have lost ‘winnable’ games to Sydney and
Eastlake over the last two rounds. While confident the
Tigers can match it with anyone in the competition,
Dickinson concedes they need to find consistency.
“I think we are good enough to beat any team in the
competition,” he said.
“We need to play four quarters. The last couple of weeks
have all been winnable games that we have dropped.”
The Tigers face a crunch game this round against
Tuggeranong. A victory for either side could see them
move into the top four. The Tigers will be wary of a
resurgent Tuggeranong outfit that impressed with
wins over Ainslie and Sydney in the last two rounds.
Dickinson believes every game is crucial for Queanbeyan
to make the finals.
“We can’t afford to drop anymore,” he said.
“He has been arguably the best big man
running around in the competition over
the last 18 months”
JAKE GUMLEY
MARIST IS
ON A ROLL
After Winning the Swans Cup and the Premiership last
year, the Marist u/18s have continued their winning
ways and are undefeated after 10 rounds.
If Marist go on to win the premiership this year it will
be their sixth premiership since 1999, which is a great
achievement for a school that used to be completely
Rugby orientated.
Mark Winchester has been at Marist for 30 years and
after being the junior coach since 1999 he is now in his
second year coaching the senior side. Marist football
president, Brendan O’Rourke believes that Mark, having
coached some of the current group of players for
10-years, is a key part of the success the team is having.
“Another key aspect to the success of the current team
is that Mark Winchester is well involved with the group
of current players…they all respect Mark and get on very
well with him.”
Mark Winchester believes that school spirit helps give
his team extra depth.
“There are always kids who want to play and represent
their college and by the time you get to the u/18 level
there is just that depth of talent there. I think also
the fact it is a school based team means you pick up
kids who might be lost to the sport and who wouldn’t
necessarily play for a club but they will play for the
school and develop the skills.”
One disappointment that the team has had to face this
year is the fact that they will not be able to defend their
Swans Cup title.
By Ben Radisich
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
Because of scheduling problems the furthest Marist can
go in the Cup this year is to the ACT regional grandfinal,
which will be played between the winner of the
government schools and non-government schools.
Brendan O’Rourke says it is disappointing the team will
not travel to Sydney and defend their title.
“There was a little bit of conflict last year when we won
the Swans Cup, it was on a Saturday night in front of
the Swans v Geelong game and then we had to travel
back over night and got back at 3am to get up at 10am
to play our final against Belconnen.”
Mark Winchester says his team is well balanced across
the board and the depth in the team forces players to
play at their best.
“I think part of the reason we have done so well is
that there are no stand out players. So it’s difficult for
opposition teams to mark one or two players because we
have a strong depth right across the board in all kinds of
positions, and that puts pressure on the kids to perform
to a higher level and maintain their place.”
In next weeks record I will speak to former Marist coach
Andy Finlay about the process that was involved from
changing Marist from a Rugby dominated school into an
AFL powerhouse.
I will finish now with some congratulatory words from
Coach Mark Winchester.
“The kids are really quite courageous and they tackle
hard, chase hard and do all the team things that have
led to success and I think they should be congratulated
for that…If they just go out and give it their best that’s
the main thing.”
