<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />
Graduates Association (UQLGA)<br />
The UQLGA was founded in 1993 under<br />
the patronage <strong>of</strong> former <strong>Queensland</strong><br />
Governor Mrs Leneen Forde (LLB 1970)<br />
with the late Sir Harry Gibbs (LLB 1939;<br />
LLM 1946; Hon. LLD 1980) and the late<br />
Sir Walter Campbell (LLB 1948) as Vice<br />
Patrons. The current President is the<br />
Hon Dr Glen Williams AO QC (LLB 1961),<br />
former justice <strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>of</strong> Appeal <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Queensland</strong>.<br />
The objectives <strong>of</strong> the Association, as<br />
outlined in its Constitution, are to:<br />

reach, serve and engage all<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> alumni<br />
who are graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>TC</strong><br />
<strong>Beirne</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, nurturing<br />
strong intellectual and emotional<br />
connections by providing a broad<br />
range <strong>of</strong> events, activities and<br />
communication opportunities<br />
foster mutually beneficial relations<br />
amongst graduates <strong>of</strong> The <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>TC</strong> <strong>Beirne</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, and between them and<br />
the <strong>University</strong>, and to support the<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s teaching, research and<br />
community service activities<br />
The UQLGA has held regular functions for<br />
the <strong>School</strong>’s alumni since its inception,<br />
including a successful seminar Practical<br />
Ethics: A <strong>Law</strong>yer’s Duties to the Courts,<br />
presented by His Honour Judge David G<br />
Searles, District Court <strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong>, in<br />
April 2009.<br />
Alumni Achievements<br />
Many former graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Law</strong> have made outstanding contributions<br />
to their community, have stimulated<br />
new ideas or innovations, and have<br />
demonstrated dedication, creativity or<br />
leadership to their field <strong>of</strong> expertise. In<br />
2008 and 2009, several <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong>’s<br />
notable alumni continued to be an<br />
excellent example to students, staff and<br />
other graduates.<br />
Her Excellency Dr Quentin Bryce AC,<br />
Governor-General <strong>of</strong> the Commonwealth<br />
<strong>of</strong> Australia<br />
Former <strong>Queensland</strong> Governor, UQ<br />
graduate Dr Quentin Bryce AC, was<br />
appointed Australia’s first female<br />
Governor-General after a long and<br />
successful career in legal education,<br />
human rights and community advocacy.<br />
Dr Bryce graduated from UQ with a<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts and a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>s.<br />
On returning to Australia after living in the<br />
United Kingdom following graduation,<br />
she was the first female appointed to<br />
the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>’s academic staff in<br />
1968 and she spent 14 years teaching<br />
Introduction to <strong>Law</strong>, Criminal <strong>Law</strong>,<br />
Administrative <strong>Law</strong> and Legal Aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
Social Work.<br />
Mr John Story<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> graduate and highlyexperienced<br />
corporate leader Mr John<br />
Story was appointed Chancellor <strong>of</strong> The<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> in 2009. A<br />
lawyer with broad corporate experience,<br />
including being Chairman <strong>of</strong> Suncorp-<br />
Metway, Tabcorp Holdings and the<br />
Australian Institute <strong>of</strong> Company Directors,<br />
a Director <strong>of</strong> CSR, and a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Queensland</strong> Public Service Commission,<br />
Mr Story took up his appointment in<br />
February.<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> the Senate, UQ’s governing<br />
body, voted Mr Story into the honorary<br />
position, which carries important<br />
governance, ceremonial and symbolic<br />
responsibilities. Mr Story previously<br />
held two voluntary positions at UQ, as a<br />
Senator since May 2006 and formerly as<br />
an Adjunct Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, and as a partner<br />
<strong>of</strong> Corrs Chambers Westgarth initiated<br />
supportive links between the legal firm<br />
and the <strong>TC</strong> <strong>Beirne</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>.<br />
2009 Australia Day Awards<br />
Former staff and alumni associated<br />
with the <strong>TC</strong> <strong>Beirne</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> were<br />
honoured in the 2009 Australia Day<br />
awards.<br />
Officer (AO) in the General Division<br />
UQ alumnus Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Brian Crommelin<br />
(LLB 1971), for service to the law and to<br />
legal education, particularly as a tertiary<br />
educator and through the development <strong>of</strong><br />
mining and petroleum law in Australia.<br />
Member (AM) in the General Division<br />
Alumnus The Hon Justice Keiran<br />
Cullinane (LLB 1966), for service to the<br />
judiciary and to the law, to the James<br />
Cook <strong>University</strong>, and to the community <strong>of</strong><br />
north <strong>Queensland</strong>.<br />
Alumnus Peter Short (LLB 1984, Adjunct<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>), for service to the<br />
law as a practitioner, to legal education<br />
and the promotion <strong>of</strong> ethical standards,<br />
through contributions to a range <strong>of</strong><br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional organisations, and to the<br />
community, particularly people with an<br />
intellectual disability.<br />
Future Plans<br />
ENGAGEMENT<br />
Australia’s 25th Governor-General Her<br />
Excellency Dr Quentin Bryce AC was also<br />
appointed UQ’s Alumnus <strong>of</strong> the Year for<br />
2008.<br />

The <strong>TC</strong> <strong>Beirne</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> is committed to the development <strong>of</strong> mutually supportive<br />
and beneficial relationships with the <strong>School</strong>’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional and community stakeholders.<br />
To that end, the <strong>School</strong> will continue to build on the initiatives undertaken over the past<br />
two years and will work with the <strong>School</strong>’s Advisory Board in 2010 and into the future to<br />
develop avenues to communicate, engage with, and influence the various communities<br />
within which it exists.<br />
