Dear Pennfield Parents and Community Members,
The Lunchbox Express
What a week at Pennfield! Holiday cheer abounds! Lower Schoolers making gingerbread houses overflowing
with candy, Senor DT’s Spanish Honor Society traveling to Child and Family Services for a holiday-themed
community service project, Fourth graders (pictured below) playing their creatively designed, literature-based
board games with their parents, and so on. Our students sure do quite a bit of hands-on learning.
As you all know, Friday is our all-school holiday concert. It begins promptly at 11:00 a.m. – so please arrive
early. We finish up around noon.
A special thank you to the PSA, Stephanie Bartley, Erik Sperl and to all of our student, parent and faculty
performers last Friday. The Barnes and Noble Bookfair was a huge success!
Parents of students in grades four through eight received their children’s report cards yesterday. If you have any
questions about the enclosed comments, don’t hesitate to contact teachers directly or their respective division
heads, Debbie Bartlett or Mattie Kemp.
The next Kiddie Yoga class begins January 8 th and our next Open House is January 25 th . There are flyers at the
front desk for both events. Please help by taking a few and hanging them at your local library, church, gym,
coffee shop, etc. Thank you!
Thank you to the Oak Society for coming to Barnes and Noble last Friday night to listen to the musicians, help
move musical equipment, and work at the gift wrapping table. We realize that there wasn’t as much to do as
some of the other events, since it was mostly Pennfield families at the store, but we very much appreciate you
coming to support the cause!
A special thanks to Garnie Cory and Shannon Mazur and to all of those that contributed to the Giving Tree this
year.
May this holiday season be filled with laughter, good food, and plenty of quality time with family and friends.
My daughter returns next Thursday from a semester abroad in Argentina. Gifts don’t get better than that!

Session 2
Mondays – Chess Club with Mathew Bottone, Grades 3 through 8
10 weeks, January 7 to April 8 from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $80/program
No experience required. Novice or advanced players may join the club!
Participation is limited to 20 players. Instruction will be provided in the
areas of rules, strategy, tactics, openings and notation. Above all, we will
practice how to maintain graceful composure when faced with the
inevitable final move of check-mate or dignified resignation.
Tuesdays – Introduction to Mandarin with Lan Xie, Grades 4 through 8
6 weeks, January 8 to February 12 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Cost: $90.00
This class provides an easy introduction to an exciting language! Develop an
appreciation and understanding of Mandarin by learning pronunciation, practicing
conversation, playing games and sampling food. Limit 12 Students.
Tuesdays – Brain Fit Club with Piper Padillia, Grades K through 3
8 weeks, January 8 to March 5 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $80.00
Brain Gym exercises are helpful in improving overall concentration. Children will
be introduced to 26 Brain Gym activities. These activities are designed to
“integrate body and mind” in order to improve “concentration, memory, reading,
writing, physical coordination, and more.”
Wednesdays – Art Enrichment with Susan Kremer, Grades 3 through 5, 8 weeks
Exploring Mexican Arts and Crafts, January 9 to February 27 from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $90.00 (snacks included)
We will be exploring a variety of Mexican arts and crafts. Everyone will have the
opportunity to work with terra cotta, tin, stencils, mosaics, and much more. The
projects will be age appropriate – but challenging and fun!

Wednesdays – Glen Farm and Pennfield School Riding Program with Ted Torrey, Grades 4 through 8
Eight weeks, April 3 to May 29 from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Cost: $325.00 Location: Glen Farm Stables
In a group environment, students will learn the basics of riding, as well as
proper horse-handling, grooming and equipment care. They will ride for one
hour each week where they will learn how to walk, trot and canter the horse in
both directions. Students will be expected to groom, tack and untack their
horses (with supervision) so entire “horse time” will be about 2 hours. Focus
will be on safety, balance and fun! This class is perfect for those who always
wanted to try riding or to prepare for dressage, jumping and/or polo.
Saturdays – Yoga for Kids with Karen King, Grades 6 through 8
Six Weeks: January 5 to February 23 from 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Cost: $45.00
Thursdays – Art Enrichment with Susan Kremer, Grades K through 2, 8 weeks
Exploring Mexican Arts and Crafts, January 10 to February 28 from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $90.00 (snacks included)
We will be exploring a variety of Mexican arts and crafts. Children will have the
opportunity to paint, make stencils and mosaics and work in terra cotta. All projects
are age appropriate – meant to challenge and inspire.
Yoga teaches children to focus and make a body-mind connection, as well as,
promoting self esteem. This class incorporates easily understood explanations
of breathing techniques, yoga poses and games while maintaining a fun and
playful environment. Library (yoga mats are provided but feel free to bring
your own mat) Limited space available – up to 10 students per class.
