Free flow times are approximate and subject to air pressure, weather and basin levels. During free flow the tide through the lock may run faster than expected.
All tide times and heights are corrected to local time and chart datum – no further adjustment is required. Heights are in metres.
All tide times and heights are corrected to local time and chart datum – no further adjustment is required. Heights are in metres.
numbered 57 to 74 (leave to port)
and by green piles to the east
running from 95 to 75. Twenty of
the piles are lit by navigational
lights (see chart extract opposite).
PASSAGE NORTH THROUGH
PORTCHESTER LAKE
At night make for pile No.57 -
approximately 1 mile north of
the harbour entrance this marks
the entrance to Portchester
Channel. You should also look
for pile No.95 until the channel
opens. Both these piles are
visible at 3.2 miles. Immediately
to the north of pile No.94 are
two unlit spherical yellow buoys
marking foul ground and these
should be left to starboard.
Although the channel in the
south is wide, the best water
is defined by large buoys, which
are not lit, and should be left to
port. At night this reach of the
channel is clearly defined by lit
starboard hand piles No’s 93,
92, 90, 88 and 86.
As you clear the buoys, in the
vicinity of pile No.63 to port,
and pile No.88 to starboard, the
channel narrows and starts a long
left-hand bend. North of 86 the
best water now lies close to the
three port piles No.66, No.67 and
No.68. On the right-hand side
opposite these piles is Tipner Lake.
This entrance is marked by two
piles red No.82 and green No.85.
The former on the starboard side
of the main channel can cause
confusion. As you proceed around
the bend the gates at lit piles
No.68 to port and No.80 to
starboard mark the sharp turn left
into the final section of channel
with Portchester Castle to port.
AT PILE NO.78 CALL
PORT SOLENT ON VHF CH.
80 AND REQUEST A LOCK IN
In season, the upper section is
well marked by moored yachts.
Out of season, beware of many
unlit moorings on both sides of
the channel. From pile No.80 turn
slowly almost due north to pile
No.79 avoiding the shallow water
immediately north of pile No.80.
At low tide keep to the port side
of the channel to pile No.72A,
thereafter cross to the starboard
side of the channel to pile No.76.
pile No.75 opens the channel
between rows of piled yacht
moorings.
Proceed between the moorings
steering on pile A and pile B.
Once abeam of pile B, steer to
follow a line leaving the outer
pontoons to starboard. At pile B
the lock entrance will be clearly
visible. Do not proceed into the
lock barrel unless three green
entry lights show. If it is necessary
to wait for the lock, moor to the
outer waiting pontoon, clear of
the lock entrance. Please note
that during the ‘off-season’ the
outer waiting pontoon may
not be in position.
QUEEN’S HARBOUR MASTER
RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. Keep clear of ships and avoid
close quarters situations.
Remember that many ships in
the main channel and harbour
will be unable to manoeuvre to
keep clear of you. If a large
vessel is in doubt about your
movements, it will sound five short
blasts. Make your intentions clear.
2. Keep to the Small Boat
Channel in the west side of the
harbour entrance.
3. Keep well to starboard in all
channels. If you have to cross a
main channel, do so at right
angles and only when clear of
large vessels.
4. The speed limit within the
harbour is 10 knots with an
advisory limit of 5 knots at
Portchester.
5. Craft fitted with engines must
use them in between Ballast and
the No 4 Bar.
6. In fog or poor visibility, stay
alongside. If caught out seek a
safe berth or anchorage as soon
as possible.
7. The main marine VHF channel
for control of shipping by QHM
is 11, you may find it useful to
listen in if you have it because it
gives you a good idea of
shipping movements.
8. You are not allowed to stop or
linger in the range safety arcs of
Tipner Range. The limits are
marked to the south by pile No’s
62 and 87 and to the north by
pile No’s 70 and 78.
9. Navigational piles should not
be approached too closely as
many are on mudbanks which
are steep in most parts but
beginning to edge into the
channel in some places.
10. The master of a vessel
navigating the Dockyard Port
should navigate the vessel with
care and caution and in such
a manner as to not cause
annoyance to the occupants
of any other vessel, or cause
damage or danger to any other
vessel or to any moorings or
other property.
CROSSING RULES
If crossing to Gunwharf Quays
or the Town Camber you must
ask permission from the QHM
on Channel 11 and cross north
of Ballast Beacon. Remain 250m
clear of all warships and MOD
berths and facilities
IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY DIAL 999. SELECT THE
SERVICE YOU REQUIRE. TELL THE OPERATOR THE NATURE
OF THE EMERGENCY, WHERE YOU ARE AND THE
TELEPHONE NUMBER YOU ARE CALLING FROM. CALL THE
MARINA RECEPTION ON VHF 80 OR DIAL 023 9221 0765
TO ENSURE YOUR GENERAL SAFETY IN THE MARINA
AND FOR ADVICE ON FIRE SAFETY IN THE MARINA
– PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING NOTES.
GENERAL SAFETY
IN THE MARINA
• First aid is available from
the marina reception 24
hours a day
• Locate the positions of the
marina emergency boxes
– you will find them on the
pontoons. These boxes house
fire extinguishers, throw lines,
thermal blankets, first aid kits
and lifebelts. Nearby you will
find emergency ladders
• Report all accidents and
potential hazards to the
marina reception immediately
• Do not use the pontoons to
store materials, dinghies etc
• Do not allow your vessel’s
anchors and davits to
overhang walkways
• Do not travel above 5 knots
in the marina – do not
create wash
• Do not ride, or allow children to
ride in the marina trolleys
• In wet or icy weather watch out
for slippery pontoons
• Do not swim, fish or scuba dive
in the marina
• Children should wear suitable
lifejackets and be supervised
when near the water
• Keep clear of vessels and
plant involved in lifting
operations
• Use rescue equipment only in
the event of an emergency
– advise the marina reception
if you use any of the
equipment. Rescue equipment
is provided for use in
emergencies. Misuse of this
equipment may have life-
threatening ramifications for
future users
• Do not use bicycles, scooters
or skateboards on the
pontoons or jetties
• Ensure that you use the
correct size and quantity of
mooring lines for your boat
• Do not remove supports from
vessels in the yard
• Have electrical leads checked
by a qualified person on a
regular basis
• Do not sail or row boats in
the marina
ADVICE ON FIRE SAFETY
IN THE MARINA
• Locate and note the position of
Fire Assembly (Muster) Points
– see site map in this guide.
Where applicable note Water
Evacuation Points
• At the Fuel Jetty: No smoking.
Turn off mobile phones, VHF
radios, engines and cooking
appliances. Extinguish
naked flames
• Do not BBQ on boats, jetties
or pontoons
• Keep minimum stores of petrol,
diesel and gas
• Install a smoke alarm, test it
regularly – fitting a smoke
alarm is the simplest step you
can take to reduce the risk
of fire
• Ensure all gas installations are
in a sound condition and
checked regularly by a
qualified registered contractor
• Make sure your gas bottle
(LPG) is secured and kept
away from heat sources
• Check that your fire
extinguishers and fire blanket
are serviceable
• Always isolate fuel and gas
on leaving your vessel
• Check electrical heaters,
dehumidifiers and 240v
equipment on leaving
your vessel
IN THE EVENT OF AN
EMERGENCY
• Dial 999 select the service you
require. Tell the operator the
nature of the emergency,
where you are and the
telephone number you are
calling from
• Notify the marina reception on
023 9221 0765 or
VHF channel 80. The marina
staff will then implement their
Emergency Action Plan
• Do not try to tackle the
incident yourself - unless you
are appropriately trained for
the incident at hand - and it is
safe to do so
• In the event of an evacuation
leave immediately and head
for the nearest Fire Assembly
(Muster) point – see site map
in this guide. If the route is
blocked, make your way to the
nearest Water Evacuation Point
• Follow all instructions given by
marina staff, security and the
emergency services
