Resistance to SO 2
Fastness to light
Here a pigment is said to be resistant if the discoloration is no
greater than 3– 4 on the ISO 105-A02 gray scale after 10 exposure
cycles (2 liters of SO 2 per cycle). The pigments were tested in an
alkyd/melamine system (130 °C at 30 minutes). The test method is
described in DIN 50018.
Exposure to light, testing and assessment were carried out following
DIN 53952, using the eight-step wool scale (1 = very poor, 8 =
outstanding).

Notes on individual pigments
XX22 series These pigments are used when the emphasis is on economy rather
than fastness to light and weathering and resistance to SO 2 . They
are particularly suitable as the sole colorant present, either in the
full or reduced shades, and in combination with other pigments for
producing oranges and greens.
XX25 series These pigments, whose shade is somewhat duller, their fastness to
light and weathering good enough for high-quality automotive
paints.
XX30 S series Apart from having very good light and weathering fastness, these
pigments exhibit high resistance to SO 2 and other acidic gases
emitted by industry.
