2012 Annual Report - Jewish Foundation of Memphis

Futu For the

2012 Annual Report

This phrase is so simple, yet it means so much. It

was chosen as the theme for this year’s annual

report because it reflects the core objective of the

Jewish Foundation of Memphis - ensure the financial

stability of our Jewish community organizations for future

generations.

A task that will take the entire community, working

together, to make happen.

This year major strides were made toward reaching this

goal. Of particular note was the re-launch of our bequest

program- Create Your Jewish Legacy, in partnership

with Memphis Jewish Federation. With funding from

the Domestic Endowment Fund of Jewish Federations

of North America and local donors Hal and Ronna

Newburger, we expanded our staff and reached out to our

partner agencies to build the momentum for a focused

deferred giving initiative. Over the next several years this

will continue to be a primary focus.

Kay Saslawsky, President

Futu

For the

Our strength has been in our ability to be objective

philanthropic advisors, working with donors with varied

interests and goals. For some donors, utilizing the

resources of the Jewish Foundation for annual donations

is the extent of their relationship with us. For others,

the resources of the Foundation have been helpful in

the development of long-term legacy plans, some of

which include structures for engaging family members for

generations to come. Whatever your philanthropic goals,

we have the tools to help.

The picture below was taken last month when the

Foundation was recognized as Outstanding Foundation

of the Year by the Memphis Chapter of the Association

of Fundraising Professionals. This wonderful honor is

a testament to the impact we have had in the Jewish

community and beyond.

Thank you for your continued partnership.

private foundations and the SO gains instant access to

the professional resources of the Jewish Foundation of

Memphis.

Create Your Jewish Legacy

Create Your Jewish Legacy is a bequest effort that aims to encourage long-time

donors to remember their favorite Jewish organizations in their estate plans. Over

the next three years the Foundation’s partner agencies will work to build their

knowledge and will reach out to donors to raise endowment funds through bequests,

life insurance policies and other deferred gift vehicles.

Stacy and Scott Vogel

10

Tami and Bob Eiseman

As successor advisors to the Sandy and Kirke Lewis Donor Advised Fund,

Tami and Bob Eiseman (pictured right) and Stacy and Scott Vogel (left)

recommended the Foundation purchase two charitable life insurance

policies for the benefit of Memphis area Jewish organizations.

“My parents loved this community and were committed to its

survival. My sister and I learned from their example and hope

to pass their values on to our children as well.”

- Scott Vogel

The Jewish Foundation’s Legacy Society recognizes donors who have helped secure the financial future of

the Memphis Jewish community by including the Jewish community in their estate plan or by making a

contribution of at least $10,000 to a permanent endowment fund of one of our partner institutions.

Legacy Society members are given the opportunity to write a personal family message in the Foundation’s

Endowment Book of Life.

Professional Advisory Group

Professional advisors play an important role in helping their clients make tax-wise

charitable gifts. The Foundation’s Professional Advisory Group (PAG) is comprised

of professional advisors in various legal and fi nancial fi elds who support the mission

of the Foundation. These legal and fi nancial advisors help clients make informed

decisions about charitable giving and advise them of the tax and fi nancial benefi ts

that can be gained by making these gifts.

Lisa & Jonathan Frisch

12

Lisa and Jonathan Frisch grew up in Memphis

and are active members of the Memphis

Jewish community. Their passion for

Judaism and our local Jewish community led them

to include a charitable bequest in their will to a

Donor Advised Fund at the Jewish Foundation

of Memphis. At the time of their death, several

local Jewish organizations will benefit from the

Frisch’s generosity.

“It’s a very simple step with truly rewarding

results.”

“Leaving a bequest in

our estate plan was easy.

Our attorney, Mike Adams,

guided us through the process

and the Foundation took

care of the rest”

- Jonathan Frisch

Local attorney Mike Adams, with Wyatt Tarrant & Combs PLLC, worked with the couple on their

estate plan. Adams is a member of the Jewish Foundation’s Professional Advisory Group and is a

certified specialist in estate planning. He enjoys guiding his clients through the charitable planning

process and is a long-time friend of the Jewish Foundation of Memphis.

Investment Program

The Jewish Foundation launched a new

investment platform in February, 2012 after a

6-month process of research and review by its

Investment Committee (pictured below).

The new platform offers 8 different strategies, each of

which is available to Foundation fund holders. A

complete description of the different strategies can be

14

accessed at www.jfom.net. Donors are given the

opportunity to recommend an investment strategy at

the time his/her fund is established. The platform was

designed in such a way that donors can take into

account their time horizon and risk tolerance.

The Investment Committee of the Jewish Foundation of Memphis meets quarterly to review investment performance and manager

selection. Pictured is its Chairman Charles Jalenak (third from right) with several members of the committee (l to r - Stanley Bilsky, Andy

Saslawsky, Sarah Thomas, Anthony Morrison, Steve Leib, Mr. Jalenak, Gary Kaplan and Jerome Makowsky)

“The Investment Committee ensures that policies and procedures are in

place to ensure the responsible oversight and management of community

dollars. Their diligent work has resulted in the development of a unique

platform that off ers a variety of options to fund holders.”

- Laura Linder, Executive Director

Ways to Make a Gift

Assets that can be used for charitable giving through the Jewish Foundation of Memphis

Cash

Cash contributions are always accepted and are fully deductible

up to 50% of a donor’s adjusted gross income (AGI).

Securities

The Jewish Foundation of Memphis has accounts at nearly

every local brokerage firm and is equipped to accept charitable

gifts of securities. Gifts of securities that have been held for

more than one year are fully deductible – up to 30% of AGI -

based on the fair market value of the gift. Donors receive a

charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift,

and, if the securities have appreciated, can generally avoid the

capital gains tax that would be due if the asset was sold by the

donor.

Real Estate - Minimum $25,000

(or $15,000 for vacant land)

JFM Realty, Inc. was established to accept charitable gifts of

real estate in support of local Jewish organizations. A board of

directors made up of 5 community members carefully evaluates

each potential real estate gift and works closely with donors to

facilitate the transaction. Property with an appraised value of

$25,000 ($15,000 for vacant land), good marketable title, and

with no environmental problems make ideal charitable gifts.

Collectibles - Minimum $10,000

Gifts of collectibles can encompass a variety of items including

artwork, coins and sports memorabilia. In an ideal situation,

gifts of collectibles should be made to a

charitable organization whose

function is related to the items

being donated. If this is the

case, the charitable tax

deduction is equal to the fair

market value of the collection.

If the collection is unrelated

to the intended charity then

the charitable deduction is

limited to what the donor paid

for the item(s). How the donor

attained the item is also a factor in

determining the deduction value.

This coin was part of a larger collection given to the Foundation in 2012.

Sale proceeds will support programs in the local Jewish community.

15

Life Insurance

Gifts of life insurance are an excellent way to leave a lasting

legacy for the community. This can be accomplished by

purchasing a new life insurance policy or by naming a favorite

charity (or the Foundation) as the owner and beneficiary of an

existing policy. Donors are generally entitled to a tax deduction

for the amount of the premiums or the cash surrender value of

an existing policy. The Jewish Foundation of Memphis is

owner of approximately 30 life insurance policies with a

combined death benefit of $6 million.

Bequests

Bequests are fully deductible for estate tax purposes, and a

bequest may be included in a new will or added to an existing

will through a simple codicil. Gifts may be stated in terms of a

specific amount or asset, a percentage of one’s estate, or the

remainder of one’s estate after all debts, taxes, expenses and

other bequests have been paid.

Retirement Assets

Retirement plan assets left to children, grandchildren and

other beneficiaries at the death of the account owner often are

subject to both income tax and estate tax. With the growth in

retirement and pension plan investments, many donors are

naming charitable organizations as beneficiary of their

retirement accounts. This is a simple and tax-wise way to

establish a legacy gift.

Life Income Gifts - minimum $100,000

($25,000 for Charitable Gift Annuities)

Donors wishing to make a gift that provides income for

themselves or a loved one may establish a Charitable

Remainder Trust or a Charitable Gift Annuity. These gifts will

pay income to the donor (or a named designee) for life or a

term of years. The trustee will then distribute the remaining

assets to the Foundation or to the charity of the donor’s

choice.

Charitable Lead Trusts - minimum $500,000

Donors wishing to make lifetime gifts to charity, accelerate

charitable deductions and maximize the children’s inheritance

may consider a Charitable Lead Trust. Assets are transferred

into an irrevocable trust and a charitable beneficiary is named

to receive fixed annuity payments from the trust for a specified

number of years. At the end of the trust term, the balance of

the trust passes to heirs.
