Lord Coe backs UCLan Olympic bid
UCLan Sports Arena given gold medal
Olympic legend Seb Coe’s backing for
UCLan’s bid to attract elite Olympic
squads to its top-rated sporting
facilities as a pre-games training base
has met with success. We are
delighted that we will now be hosting
a number of Oceanic countries’
athletes including Fiji, Papua New
Guinea, Guam and the Solomon
Islands before they head off to
London 2012.
And as part of a visit to see how
Lancashire is engaging with London
2012, Lord Coe, Chair of the London
Organising Committee for the
Olympic and Paralympic Games, called
in at the University’s multi-million
Preston Sports Arena (PSA). During a
whistle stop tour, the former Olympic
gold medalist saw outstanding
facilities used on a daily basis by a
range of sporting enthusiasts
including students, elite athletes and
those within the local community.
Dr Adrian Ibbetson, UCLan’s Director
for Sport, led the tour of the facilities
which included a visit to the
University’s new Olympic standard
‘Strength and Conditioning’ lab, built
to aid performance and improve the
strength of athletes across a wide
range of individual and team sports.
Dr Ibbetson explained: “Lord Coe was
genuinely impressed with our
cutting-edge facilities and the way
we are assisting elite athletes,
students and those from schools
throughout the region to meet their
sporting aspirations.”
The site boasts the UK's only premier
league standard football pitches in the
public domain and also features a
floodlit eight-lane athletics arena.
Other facilities include seven grass
pitches, two floodlit all-weather
pitches, four floodlit netball or tennis
courts, a cricket square and pavilion,
seven floodlit multi-use areas, a
covered training area and a 1.5 km
cycle circuit.
Each week over 500 students train
and play matches at PSA and the
facilities have helped the University to
make a dramatic rise up the British
Universities Sports Association (BUSA)
league rankings. The sporting
performances of UCLan students have
placed the institution in the top three
of all North West universities having
risen 34 places in the last two years.
Accompanying Lord Coe on his visit
was cyclist Chris Newton, a key
member of the Team GB Pursuit
Squad and bronze medallist at Beijing
2008. Lancashire based Chris races for
one of Britain’s leading road cycling
teams, the Preston based
RaphaCondorRecycling.co.uk which is
sponsored by UCLan. Chris was able
to meet staff and test new facilities
within UCLan’s Centre for Applied
Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES).
In the latest National Student Survey
students studying on UCLan’s Sports
Science degrees gave the University a
100 percent satisfaction rating. Out of
60 universities in the UK which offer
Sports Science as a degree, UCLan is
ranked at number one for this factor.
Nuclear skills boost for West Cumbria
A landmark investment of £5 million
pounds in the comprehensive
redevelopment and extension of its
Westlakes Campus in Cumbria is
reaching completion.
The development will ensure that it
will be a fit-for-purpose, modern
campus and bring state-of-the-art
teaching facilities to the local area,
particularly supporting the local skills
agenda and the nuclear industry.
Facilities will include a new wet
laboratory, advanced teaching areas,
a lecture theatre with 3D capability,
and will be equipped with high
performance computing facilities.
The redevelopment comes as a result
of a £2.5m investment from UCLan,
with a £2m contribution from
Westlakes Renaissance and £500,000
from the West Cumbrian
Development Fund.
The newly refurbished premises will
be 30 percent larger than before and
will accommodate a range of
students. The redevelopment will
bring the Westlakes Campus in line
4
with the high standards of existing
UCLan buildings and make it
complementary to the Dalton
Cumbria Facility of Manchester
University (soon to be on the
Westlakes Science Park), enabling
students from both campuses to share
equipment and facilities.
Areas of research will include
environmental sciences, sustainable
development, epidemiology and
genetics. Also covered will be
materials science, proliferation, socioeconomic
and governance issues,
three-dimensional visualisation
technology and renewables.
“The investment we are making at the
Westlakes Campus underpins our
strategies for dealing with the energy
sector and will enable us to deliver
advanced nuclear skills locally,” said Dr
Graham Baldwin, Pro Vice-Chancellor,
Skills and Employer Engagement.
“Work started on the refurbishment
late last year and we look forward to
unveiling the new facilities in
September 2009."
Physiotherapy graduates
attend Masterclass
Graduate Physiotherapists
attended a Cardiorespiratory
Masterclass funded by the UCLan
Alumni Association in March 2009.
The event was held at Blackpool
Victoria Hospital and was led by
Dr Rebecca Scholes.
Rebecca qualified as a
Physiotherapist in 1997 and
completed her PhD in 2005. This
focused on prediction of
pulmonary complications in
patients following upper
abdominal surgery. Rebecca is
currently Deputy Head of
Physiotherapy at Monash
University, Melbourne.
Sessions included:
• Physiotherapy in the abdominal
surgical patient
• Evidence based practice in the
abdominal surgery population
• Risk prediction in the surgical
population
• Musculoskeletal management of
the respiratory patient
• Clinical reasoning and patient
prioritisation
• Education and assessment of
physiotherapy students in the
clinical environment
• Cardiorespiratory Education –
the Monash Model
The event was highly interactive
and encouraged participants to
evaluate their own practice in light
of research findings in the field of
Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy.
First class Sports Therapist goes from strength to strength
Professional sports therapist Laura Patterson is flying high thanks
to a first class honours degree from UCLan.
Lytham lass Laura was one of the first
students through the BSc (Hons)
Sports Therapy course, graduating in
2007, and has now set up her own
business on the Fylde Coast.
Laura said: “I set up Active Start UK
Ltd as soon as I graduated and it’s
been steadily growing over the past
12 months, building up through
word of mouth.”
She continued: “Hard work and
determination is an underestimate
for what was required for me to
achieve a first class honours -
especially when I had to hold down a
job and undergo major surgery and
health problems at the same time!
But it was all definitely worth it.
“The Sports Therapy course is the
perfect course if you’re interested in
anatomy, physiology and sport. You
need to be really passionate about it
if you want a successful degree and
when you graduate the learning
never stops.”
The undergraduate course is
underpinned by the study of
physiology, psychology, pathology,
exercise rehabilitation and manual
therapies. There is an emphasis on
the use of manual therapy, massage
and sports specific exercise as
therapeutic components of a
rehabilitation programme.
As well as gaining a first class
honours degree, Laura also picked up
a Cresta award from her tutors for
her hard work.
Principal lecturer for Sports Therapy,
Andy Cunningham, said: “Laura has
been an outstanding student who
came to us through a non-standard
alumni
entry route. She demonstrated
throughout what can be achieved
through hard work, application and a
desire to succeed.”
Laura will be continuing her studies
in September 2009 when she
undertakes the MSc Psychology of
Sport and Exercise at UCLan.
The ‘future’ is in your hands
With the media reporting the
constant downturn of the economy,
it seems that every week another
business goes into administration -
is this really a good time to change
your career, undertake further study
or even start a business?
Some critics would say yes - this is the
best time to do those things!
Change your Career?
In the current climate changing your
career may not seem like a viable
option. However, use this time to
re-evaluate and perhaps look at
changing the sector you are working
in or even push for that promotion
you’ve always wanted. Businesses are
recruiting and they are looking for
skilled experienced staff.
With this in mind, there are a number
of things you can do to increase your
chances of success. Update your CV;
focus on your skills, experiences and
achievements. Write a good
application form; ensure you relate
your experiences to their requirements
and undertake some work experience
to prove to your (potential) new
employer that you are serious about
working in their sector.
6
Postgraduate Study
Whether you undertake full-time or
part-time further study it shows
employers a number of things,
including your ability to learn and
intent to update your knowledge.
Some careers require a postgraduate
qualification so it’s worth taking some
time to research the career area that
interests you and find out whether a
postgraduate course would be essential
or provide a distinct advantage.
Business Start-up
With businesses going bust on what
seems a daily basis, is it really a good
time to start a business? Some would
say yes, especially if you have a well
researched product or service and a
robust business plan. It is argued that
businesses that push forward with
their marketing and sales during a
recession are the businesses that
ultimately thrive.
What next?
Did you know that as a UCLan
Name: Jo Fox-Tutchener
Course of Study:
BA(Hons) Fashion Promotion
Year of Graduation: 1998
Job Title & Employer:
Managing Director, Beauty Seen PR
What made you choose to study
your course?
I actually started on a public relations
course which I found a little hard going.
It was not at all creative and I missed
using that side of my brain. My flat-mate
was doing fashion promotion which
looked like my dream course – I used to
sit with her in the evenings giving her
ideas and longing to be on the same
course. Creative, inspiring and current,
it managed to perfectly fuse theory and
creative, touching on every side of the
fashion industry. I went to see the course
leader to see if I could swap and never
looked back. As soon as I started on the
course I knew this was the path that was
right for me – I loved every minute!
?
?
?
What did you do after graduation?
I spent a year on placement at various PR
companies in London, at one point
working seven days a week. I worked in a
shop at weekends to pay for me to be
able to do unpaid work experience to
help build contacts and get as much
experience as possible. Following this,
I had two job offers and decided to go to
a PR agency specialising in fashion, events
and music. I stayed there for six years,
setting up a beauty division, before being
approached by Estee Lauder to head up
their in-house PR department. I spent
three years as Communications Manager
for Estee Lauder and Tom Ford Beauty
before deciding to set up my own PR
agency, Beauty Seen PR, which opened in
October 2007.
What are your lasting memories of
your time at UCLan?
I absolutely loved my time at UCLan, both
socially and academically. I found the
course extremely inspiring and the
placement year essential when it came to
getting to know the industry inside out
and building contacts.
What is your greatest achievement
since graduation?
Opening my own agency. It has been
extremely hard work but I now represent
fourteen clients including Sainsbury’s
Health and Beauty, Ruby and Millie,
Cowshed, Eve Lom and Annick Goutal.
What advice would you give to
graduates wanting to do something
similar, or what message would you
like to give to those thinking of
taking up study?
Without sounding like your parents…you
get out of it what you put in. I worked
hard but also played hard going out five
nights a week (I used to claim I was
developing my networking skills!) and
loving every second. But all day, every
day, I was in the studio working,
researching, feeding my brain and
coming up with campaign ideas.
Has your degree, or your experiences
at UCLan had any particular impact
on your current employment or your
life in general?
When I joined UCLan I didn’t really know
what I wanted to do.
I had enrolled on a PR course because my
Dad said I would be good at it and I
didn’t really know what it was about
apart from ‘being good with people’.
UCLan introduced me to a new world,
it took me on a wonderful journey that
enabled me to focus my passion and
talent turning it into a career that I love
and introducing me to a world I didn’t
even know existed.
A climb of 14 places up the latest Times Higher Student Experience Survey table was recent cause for
celebration. From a position of 37th last year, UCLan is now ranked 23rd, placing it second in the
Northwest, with Liverpool University appearing at 25th and Manchester University at 59th.
For the second year running, UCLan’s Library was highly rated giving it a joint overall ranking of 11th.
And with work due to start this summer on Phase 2 of the refurbishment it is hoped to make the top 10
in next year’s survey.
UCLan was also third of the three highest ranking new universities,
all of which made it into the top 25 overall.
Graduate sets up England’s
first community-owned farm
UCLan graduate, twenty-six year old
Charlotte Hollins, has helped to save
her organic family farm by setting
up an imaginative new scheme.
After leaving university with an
Environmental Management and Maths
degree, Charlotte returned home to
save money before planning to go
travelling. However, a set of events and
an eviction notice led her and younger
brother Ben to start a battle to raise
£800,000 to save their farm.
Charlotte and her family had been at
Fordhall Farm for generations as
tenant farmers but their landlord was
determined to sell the land for
development and the Hollins family
were in his way. Charlotte’s father was
in his late eighties and their mother
was struggling to manage the farm so
the siblings decided to have one last
attempt at saving their family heritage.
Charlotte and Ben set up a campaign
and a year later managed to secure a
tenancy in their own names. This led
to them being offered the option to
purchase the farm but they had to
raise £800,000 in only six months.
As young people and tenant farmers,
they knew a mortgage would be out
of the question so they set up an
Industrial and Provident Society for
Community Benefit Account which
enabled them to sell non-profit
making £50 shares in the farm, raising
all of the money and turning Fordhall
into England’s first ever communityowned
farm.
The Fordhall Community Land
Initiative (FCLI) is a pioneering project
which continues to attract press
interest from around the world.
The FCLI has over eight thousand
members world-wide and hundreds
of volunteers, all of whom Charlotte
manages and co-ordinates. Project
Director, Charlotte, now works for the
community trust that owns the farm
and Ben is the tenant farmer.
The brother and sister team has great
plans for the future development of
Fordhall including the renovation of
old buildings to open a local food tea
room and generating more income to
expand the educational work they do
in the community. They have even
written a book called ‘The Fight for
Fordhall Farm’ which has sold over ten
UCLan helps Chris Moyles
with Kilimanjaro challenge
10
In preparation for their Red Nose Climb
up Mount Kilimanjaro in March, Chris
Moyles and his Radio One team scaled the
highest mountain in Wales with help from
the Outdoors staff at UCLan.
Braving winter winds and snowy crags,
the 3,000ft ascent took seven and a half
hours to complete.
UCLan’s Nigel Garratt, Division Leader for
the Outdoors, said: “Climbing Snowdon is
always a real test and I think Chris and the
team found it a tougher test than they
expected. However, they were all very
determined and stuck at it. It was certainly
good preparation for their Kilimanjaro
challenge which involved a climb of
19,000ft.”
UCLan, which has formally opened its
new outdoor centre in nearby Llangollen,
North Wales, supplied clothing and
rucksacks for the expedition as well as
guiding, instructing and leading the Radio
One team safely to the summit.
The official climb, in aid of Comic Relief,
has raised over three million pounds to
date in sponsorship and UCLan is thrilled
to have had an involvement in Chris’
training and preparation.
Internal Communication: making an impact on the environment
Rachel Fielding, Principal
Communications Officer for the
Environment Agency, came back to
UCLan four years after she graduated
to talk to students.
The Environment Agency is a complex
organisation with a challenging role: to
look after the environment and make it
a better place. And with more than
10,000 staff involved in diverse specialist
roles from fisheries to flood protection,
the Agency's internal communications
presents a huge challenge.
Rachel gave a guest lecture to MA
Strategic Communication students,
who study internal communication as
part of their course, to give them an
insight into the scale and complexity of
internal communication at the
Environment Agency.
Rachel said: “We see internal
communication as an important
corporate communication function.
Providing high quality communication
tools is a significant aspect of our work
and internal communication is a lot
more than channel management. It is
vital for engaging staff at all levels to
help the Agency achieve its aim of
making the environment a better
place.”
Rachel graduated from UCLan's BA
Hons Public Relations course in 2005
and her communication career began
in local authority public relations. She
moved to museum and art
communication in Birmingham, and
then joined the Environment Agency's
Corporate Communications Team.
Rachel credits her UCLan course with
providing a good foundation for her
communication career: “The degree
course at UCLan provided me with a
good balance of theoretical and
practical modules. I took a placement
year as a Public Relations Assistant at
Pendle Borough Council after my
second year and acted as an Account
Manager with the student consultancy,
UK Progress, in the third year.”
MA Strategic Communication
programme director, Dr Mary Welch
said: “It is great to see Rachel's career
going from strength to strength. Our
students really appreciated Rachel's
valuable insight into the challenge of
communicating inside complex
organisations.”
Charity begins….at work!
UCLan graduate, Amalia Brightley-
Hodges, has achieved more in her
short career than most people achieve
in several years of employment.
Amalia, who graduated in 2008, has
been key in developing and launching
the charity, My Ten Days.
The aim of My Ten Days is to
encourage owner/managers of small
and medium size businesses to give
one employee ten days of paid leave
in order to do something truly
amazing for charity. The initiative
allows individuals the opportunity to
fundraise and volunteer without
having to worry about losing holiday
entitlement or pay, making them free
to make a real contribution.
The charity has been set up to mark the
20th Anniversary of London based
design and communications agency,
Still Waters Run Deep, where Amalia
has worked as a PA/Studio
Administrator and PR, since graduation.
UNIQUE COURSES FOR BURNLEY
UCLan has unveiled a range of exciting
new courses for its new Burnley
campus not only to meet the needs of
employers and the community in
Fashion and Brand Promotion
graduate, Amalia, undertook several
placements whilst at university to
ensure she had the skills, experience
and contacts to go straight into
employment on leaving UCLan. She
worked at Still Waters Run Deep over
several summers as well as placements
at Miss Sixty, FHM, Good Housekeeping
and Vivienne Westwood.
These fantastic opportunities made
Amalia realise the importance of
‘getting a foot in the door’ at a
company and due to this, Still Waters
Run Deep will soon be launching the
SWRD! Academy, which will give a
graphic design graduate a 6 or 9
month apprenticeship rather than the
standard 6 week placement which
they have been offering for 15 years.
Amalia said: “Whether good or bad
experiences, I would never have
known what it was I really wanted to
do without doing these placements.
Pennine Lancashire, but also to
establish its reputation for developing
programmes that are amongst the
most innovative in the UK.
alumni
What’s more, the contacts I made have
proved invaluable and when I
graduated I was offered three jobs –
how many graduates can say that
these days?”
Please see www.mytendays.org for
more information and contact details
for the charity (to be launched in May
2009). The web-site will provide a
central hub for charities to post their
schemes and voluntary opportunities.
Many of the courses being put forward
for the campus are the first in the
country. Proposed titles include: BA
(Hons) Asian Fashion, BA (Hons)
Community Journalism, BA/BSc (Hons)
Computer Games Enterprise and BA
(Hons) Design Enterprise.
Martin Brown, Director of the Burnley
Campus, said: “We’re really looking to
capture the imagination of the region’s
public and provide courses that tune in
with local needs. For instance, double
the national average of Pennine
Lancashire’s working population is
employed in manufacturing and so we
will be offering the BSc (Hons)
Engineering Business Enterprise and
MSc Manufacturing Leadership.”
The new Burnley campus will open in
September 2009. For information about
courses please contact 01282 711222.
Every little helps….
At the start of this academic year the
Magic Taxi search engine was installed
onto the University's computer
network enabling student and staff
web searches via Magic Taxi to raise
money for the Harris Bursary Fund.
We're pleased to report that over a
four month period the partnership
with Magic Taxi has generated an extra
ALUMNI TELETHON – March/April 2009
alumni
Thank you to everyone who has continued to support us in our fundraising efforts to increase the
Harris Bursary Fund. The fund continues to enable us to help students who are financially
disadvantaged by allowing us to buy books, computers and even food vouchers from your donations.
The University of Central Lancashire
Foundation is a charity exempt from
registration under the second
Schedule to the Charities Act 1993.
We’ve recently completed our second telethon campaign which came to an end in
April 2009 and you may have been one of the people who we contacted.
The telephone callers are all UCLan students and one of them, Pratima, wanted to
share her thoughts about working on the campaign with you.
Dear Alumni,
Let me start with a puzzle. I am what you were once upon a time, not so long ago.
Guess who I am? Well, the answer is...a student of the University of Central Lancashire!
Now that we share something in common, let me tell you something about what I study
and what I do within the University. I am a Masters student studying Forensic DNA
Profiling. I must say that it’s quite an intense course, which is why working as a student
caller for the University’s Fundraising Team is great fun and a very welcome break.
My job is to get in touch with the University’s alumni, largely to maintain contact but also
let the bond that we all have with our university thrive. They say that our university days
are the best of our lives. The friends, those late nights, the lecturers and the exam pressure
are all experiences we’ve learned from and I am sure will cherish forever.
I’m glad that my job is to try and make every student’s experience as memorable as mine
and yours. I play my small part in raising both the profile and money for the Harris Bursary
Fund, which I think is an excellent initiative taken by the University to support students who
are financially less fortunate than I am.
The Harris Bursary Fund aims at providing help where it is absolutely necessary, so that
students can get a degree that helps them towards a brighter future. I would appeal to
everyone to join us in making our university a place where economic barriers do not
become a hindrance in getting a decent education because education is hugely important
to the future culture and citizenship of a country.
There is also a government initiative which almost doubles every pound donated to the
Fund at no further cost to the donor. However, there is a time limit on this scheme so let’s
make the most of the opportunity to help our university support a small but sizeable
portion of students who are in need.
Best wishes to you all,
Paul Mukerji
- 1994 graduate
alumni
In 1994 I graduated with a 2:1 in
French and History from UCLan. I
have very fond memories of my time
in Preston and the people I met
during both periods of study –
and socialising!
After doing some additional
language courses I got a job in the
tourism industry and have visited
over 60 countries through my work,
principally in Europe, the Americas,
Africa and Asia. In the intervening
years I also completed an MA in
Peace Studies from the University of
Bradford which led me to becoming
a human rights observer first in
Columbia and more recently in
Israel/Palestine.
Since my return, I have been giving
talks about my experiences to
schools, amnesty groups, rotary
clubs and churches. If there is
anyone who remembers me
(you might not recognise me from
the photo as I had more hair in my
uni days) who belongs to an
organisation which may be
interested in hosting such a talk
then please get in touch. Equally, if
you just want to catch up it would
be great to hear from you.
