18.10 Wireless security<br />

This section briefly outlines Wireless Transport Layer Security, its goals, <strong>and</strong><br />

how it manages its connections <strong>and</strong> gives a brief protocol overview. In addition,<br />

this section provides a brief overview of the Wireless Identity Module.<br />

18.10.1 Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS)<br />

Many applications on the Web today require a secure connection between a<br />

client <strong>and</strong> the application server. WTLS is the security protocol, defined by the<br />

OMA WAP-261-WTLS-20010406-a specification, to ensure secure transactions<br />

on WAP terminals.<br />

WTLS is based upon the industry-st<strong>and</strong>ard Transport Layer Security (TLS)<br />

protocol, but has been optimized for use over narrow-b<strong>and</strong> communication<br />

channels. It ensures data integrity, privacy, authentication, <strong>and</strong> denial-of-service<br />
