The signaling <strong>and</strong> control protocols locate users, negotiate capabilities, <strong>and</strong><br />

manage voice calls. There are currently four major signaling protocols:<br />

► Session Initiation Protocol (S<strong>IP</strong>)<br />

► Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP)<br />

► ITU-T Recommendation H.248/Media Gateway Controller (Megaco)<br />

► ITU-T) Recommendation H.323<br />

These protocols are incompatible <strong>and</strong> often provide redundant functions. When<br />
