A message from Bodley’s Librarian and Director
of Oxford University Library Services
Dear Reader,
You will find here a universe of knowledge to discover. Whether you explore
one or more of Oxford’s 100 libraries or visit the libraries online, you’ll be
encountering one of the world’s greatest resources. We hold collectively
11 million volumes, and we also offer more access to online publications
and databases than any other academic institution in the UK. A partner
in Google’s Book Search initiative, we have scanned many of our 19th
century books, and we offer over 200,000 titles in our Early English Books
Online and the Eighteenth Century Collections Online. Oxford’s Digital Library is only an introduction
to our extraordinary holdings. Among our treasures are four copies of the Magna Carta, a copy of the
Gutenberg Bible, and the archives of great writers such as Franz Kafka and J R R Tolkien. In 2009-10
we’ll be exhibiting some examples of our distinguished holdings, including a selection of our Hebraica
holdings and rare books, manuscripts, objects from the archives of Percy and Mary Shelley, and others of
the Romantic period as well.
In addition to our collections and web services, you’ll find a variety of appealing spaces in which to study
or conduct research. College libraries are invaluable for students and fellows, and many permit 24-hour
access. The Bodleian Library and the associated libraries that comprise the Oxford University Library
Services support all members of the University of Oxford and welcome scholars from around the world.
Founded in 1602, the Bodleian is the centre of advanced humanities research. The Social Science Library
is the University’s busiest library, with over 7,500 users during a single week in Trinity Term. The Radcliffe
Science Library has opened its doors not only to scientists and engineers, but will also, for the next four
years, provide a Special Collections reading room during the renovation of the New Bodleian Library.
Oxford University Library Services is about to embark on an historic transformation of its services. A book storage
facility that will be constructed in 2009-10 will house several million volumes, and the New Bodleian will be
reconfigured into a Special Collections library and public exhibition space. In the process, two-thirds of libraries’
holdings and almost 40% of its staff will move to temporary and new locations. Our goal is to minimise the
disruption to readers, but I suspect, if I am realistic, there will be some infelicities. Other institutions have closed
their libraries or warned of sharply reduced services during similar renovations. We have chosen to continue our
service without significant interruption, but I want to ask for your patience if you encounter difficulties associated
with the move.
I invite you and indeed encourage you to take advantage of all Oxford’s libraries have to offer. You’ll
have an opportunity to delve into our unparalleled collections, to use our diverse spaces, and to enjoy
specialized services, all assembled for your benefit.
Our goal is to be one of the best university library service in the world. We endeavour to innovate and develop our
services and collections continuously in order to improve our users’ and readers’ research and learning.
Sincerely yours
Sarah E. Thomas
How to use this Guide
Oxford University has one of the world’s leading university library systems including over
100 libraries, a rich collection of printed and online materials, a wide range of services and
knowledgeable staff to assist you.
This guide provides you with an overview of many of the libraries within the Oxford system and
includes details of each library’s subject coverage, access and borrowing arrangements, contact
details and core opening hours. (You are advised to check opening hours with individual libraries
before visiting as there may be some variation during the academic year).
This guide does not cover individual college libraries, as these are normally only open to college
members.
Libraries are listed alphabetically with subject and course indexes (for undergraduate subjects) at
the back.
Further information about Oxford libraries is available at www.ouls.ox.ac.uk
The Libraries
Oxford University Library Services
Oxford University Library Service (OULS) encompasses the majority of University libraries
including the major research and faculty libraries and a growing number of departmental libraries.
It does not include college libraries.
Faculty and Departmental Libraries
These libraries provide subject specific collections and dedicated library support for each subject. In
most cases they are lending libraries and will stock many of the key texts for taught courses.
The Bodleian and Research Libraries
I N T R O D U C T I O N / 3
The Bodleian Library is one of the world’s great research libraries and is a legal deposit library, entitled
to receive a copy of every book published in the UK and the Irish Republic. The legal deposit material
is reference only and may not be borrowed. It is housed in the following libraries:

4 / A G U I D E T O L I B R A R I E S I N O X F O R D
Bodleian Japanese Library
Bodleian Law Library
Bodleian Library—New Library
Bodleian Library—Old Library
Bodleian Library—Radcliffe Camera
Bodleian Library of Commonwealth and African Studies at Rhodes House
Education Library
Institute for Chinese Studies Library
Oriental Institute Library
Radcliffe Science Library
Sackler Library
Social Science Library
Taylor Bodleian Slavonic and Modern Greek Library
Taylor Institution Library
Vere Harmsworth Library
The research libraries also purchase material. Purchased items may be borrowed from most of the
research libraries, although not from the central Bodleian Library or the Bodleian Law Library.
The majority of Bodleian collections are held in closed book stacks. To read these materials you will
need to order them from the stacks to a reading room using the Automated Stack Request (ASR)
system which is part of OLIS. You will find more information about OLIS below.
College libraries
College libraries offer collections and services tailored to the needs of their college members and
typically offer long opening hours and generous lending arrangements.
The holdings of most college libraries are included in the OLIS catalogue. However, items in college
libraries are normally only available to members of the college. Exceptions may be made in the case
of unique research materials including special collections and manuscript materials as well as books
and journals that are not available elsewhere. Requests for access to such material should be directed
to the college librarian. For contact details please see www.ox.ac.uk/colleges
Admission to libraries
Members of Oxford University are entitled to use all OULS libraries although some local
registration may be necessary. Your University card is also your library card and should be presented
at each library. If you do not already have a card, your college or departmental administrator will
be able to advise you on how to apply for one. If you are not a member of Oxford University you

should consult the Admissions Guide at www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/services/admissions or contact the
Admissions Office (tel. 01865 277180, email:
admissions@bodley.ox.ac.uk) for information about admission to OULS libraries.
Non OULS libraries have individual admissions policies. For more information please refer to the
appropriate entry in this guide or check the library website.
Finding resources
SOLO: Search Oxford Libraries Online
http://solo.ouls.ox.ac.uk
SOLO offers easy access to Oxford’s extensive printed and online collections. The SOLO homepage
searches the OLIS library catalogue, Oxford’s large collection of e-resources and
e-journals and other collections such as the Oxford Research Archive (ORA).
SOLO also offers ‘Articles and databases’ searching. This allows you to search for keywords within
pre-selected sets of online resources and is a useful way of finding a sample of articles for your
subject. However, for more in depth research we recommend that you search each online resource
independently using its own search interface. This generally gives you more control over your search.
OLIS: Oxford Libraries Information System
www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/olis
OLIS is the main library catalogue covering the collections of nearly all of the libraries within the
University including the research libraries and most faculty, departmental and college libraries. It
includes e-journals as well as Oxford’s extensive printed collections.
OLIS covers over 11.5 million items. However, it is not comprehensive and so you may need to use
other finding tools as well. This is particularly true if you are consulting manuscripts, maps, music
scores or government publications. If you can not find an item please ask library staff who will be
happy to help you.
You can search OLIS from SOLO or independently at www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/olis.
I N T R O D U C T I O N / 5
If you wish to consult items from the closed book stacks you should use OLIS to order them to a
reading room of your choice using the ‘stack request’ system.
You can also use OLIS to check your borrowing record, to renew your books and to reserve books
which are out to other readers.

6 / A G U I D E T O L I B R A R I E S I N O X F O R D
For more information about OLIS please see www.lib.ox.ac.uk/olis/documentation/all.htm
or pick up a guide in your local library.
You will find information about your personal details on OLIS at www.lib.ox.ac.uk/olis/
documentation/yourrecord.html.
OxLIP+: Oxford Libraries Information Platform
http://oxlip-plus.ouls.ox.ac.uk
OxLIP+ provides access to Oxford’s extensive online collections including databases and
e-journals. Although these collections are also available via SOLO, OxLIP+ includes additional
functionality including the ability to browse online resources by subject and title. It also includes
an A-Z of e-journals.
In addition, the OxLIP+ cross-search facility allows you to search up to 5 online resources
simultaneously. You may find this useful for finding a sample of articles, but it is generally not as
effective as searching each resource independently.
You can find guides to OxLIP+ at www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/guides or in print in your library.
Oxford University e-Journals
http://ejournals.ouls.ox.ac.uk
Oxford University e-Journals is an A-Z of more than 28,000 e-journals. It can be searched from
within SOLO and OxLIP+ as well as independently.
Remote access to e-resources
If you are a current member of Oxford University you will be able to access nearly all online
resources when you are away from Oxford by logging in to SOLO or OxLIP+ using your Oxford
Single Sign On (SSO) username and password.
For more information about Oxford Single Sign On including details of how to apply for a
username or reset a forgotten password please see www.ict.ox.ac.uk/oxford/username.

Services
Photocopying, scanning and photography
Self services photocopiers are available in most libraries and reading rooms. Please see www.ouls.
ox.ac.uk/services/copy/copying for more information and for current prices.
Please remember that copyright law restricts the amount that can be copied from any single
work. The standard amount regarded as reasonable is one chapter or 5% of the total length of a
monograph, or one article from a periodical issue. More information about copyright limits is
available on the Bodleian ‘Making a copy’ web page at www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/bodley/services/
copy
Fragile and manuscript material, and material printed before 1800 may not be photocopied using
self service photocopiers. For details of how to obtain copies of these materials in the Bodleian
please see www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/services/copy/imaging_services. In other libraries please
consult library staff.
Digital cameras and personal scanners may be used in some libraries and reading rooms. Please
see www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/services/copy/digital for further details. In addition, scanning is available
using the self-service photocopiers in some libraries. Please ask staff for more information.
Inter-library Loans
If you need to consult a publication that we do not hold in Oxford, we may be able to get it for
you using our Inter-library Loan service. Please see www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/services/ill for more
information.
Computing facilities and connecting your laptop
You will be able to connect your laptop to the network in many of our libraries and reading rooms.
Please ask local library staff for more information.
In addition, many libraries provide public computers and printing facilities for readers.
Getting help and training
I N T R O D U C T I O N / 7
Members of staff in all libraries will be happy to assist you and to help you make the most of
library resources - please do not hesitate to ask us.
We run a range of tours and classes to help you to make the most of our printed collections and e-

8 / A G U I D E T O L I B R A R I E S I N O X F O R D
resources. Classes are advertised at www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/training and on the websites of individual
libraries. If you cannot find a class that suits you please contact usered@ouls.ox.ac.uk
In addition, we produce a range of user guides and tutorials which are available from www.ouls.
ox.ac.uk/guides (or in print in your local library).
Many libraries also offer drop in sessions or opportunities to ‘book a librarian’ to help you with
your studies and research. Please contact your library for details.
Information for disabled students and staff
Library staff have been trained to be aware of the needs of disabled customers. The Access
Directory on the Web lists the facilities and special equipment at each library and includes
important information such as whether there are any steps or assistive equipment in each library.
Where there are potential barriers to using a library, staff have provided ways of ensuring access
to the library’s stock and services; these policies and procedures are listed in the Directory. Some
equipment, such as adaptive keyboards, is available centrally and can be requested in order to
equip a workstation at a specific library. The Access Directory can be found at www.ouls.ox.ac.
uk/services/disability/access/
ARACU - Accessible Resources Acquisition and Creation Unit - is part of OULS. It creates
alternative formats (electronic text, audio DAISY CD, Braille and also tactile diagrams) for
disabled readers who cannot access printed materials. Please contact aracu@ouls.ox.ac.uk or 01865
283862 if you would like more information.
Other useful services include the University Disability Advisory Team. Please visit
www.admin.ox.ac.uk/eop/disab. The Oxford University Computing Services (OUCS) offers a
range of facilities that are listed on its website at www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/enable.
If you are a disabled student and have specific access needs for a particular library, please
contact the Disability Librarian (teresa.pedroso@ouls.ox.ac.uk or 283861) to discuss your
requirements. Alternatively, contact the Disability Contact of the library you intend to use.
The Bodleian Library: Special Collections Move
In preparation for the refurbishment of the New Bodleian Library expected to begin next year,
a large proportion of Special Collections material currently stored there must be relocated
temporarily. The relocation is being carried out for conservation reasons, in order to protect the
Bodleian’s important collections during the refurbishment of the library.
During this period the Special Collections that are affected will be available for consultation at
the Radcliffe Science Library (RSL). A dedicated Special Collections team and relevant resources
will relocate to the RSL to administer this material for readers. The Special Collections Reading
Room in the New Bodleian Library will close at some stage during the academic year 2009-10. A
new Special Collections Reading Room will be opened at the RSL.
Duke Humfrey’s Library will continue to provide access to manuscripts and rare books not
transferred to the Radcliffe Science Library.
A list of the transferred collections and fuller information is available on the website www.ouls.
ox.ac.uk/scmoves.
Note:
I N T R O D U C T I O N / 9
Until the relocation of Special Collections material to the RSL, Duke Humfrey’s Library will
house reference material supporting the study of pre-1800 manuscripts and pre-1641 printed
books; the Special Collections Reading Room will house material supporting the study of
post-1800 manuscript material, ephemera, Oriental manuscripts and special collections. A
large proportion of the reference material, complementing the temporarily transferred Special
Collections, will be relocated to the RSL Special Collections Reading Room when this is created.
Please contact Special Collections staff with any queries, either in person in the Special
Collections Reading Room, by e-mail: enquiries.sc@bodley.ox.ac.uk or by telephone: 01865
277046 – please note that the number might change after the relocation.
