FISHING AT FOGO ISLANDS
Turcliffe, arrived on the scene with his crew and piloted the Harry B.
by the northern route around Bakeapple Island to Turcliffe Tickle to a
mooring adjacent to his. At 9.52 p.m. the great berg rent on the shoals
and' foundered at 10.2" its towering steeples cascading and setting 'up a
tidal wave which thundered through Brown's tickle and on Brown's Cove
in roaring fury at being thwarted of its prey. Safe from its menace, the
Harry B. and the Bessie M. rode securely at their new anchorages.
Arch Scammell Gets Wetting in Back Cove
Yesterday Arch Scammell and crew were up around Back Cove on the
hunt for caplin. They spied some in a narrow gulch and shot the bunt
of the seine across. In the scuffle and bustle the punt hooked on a sunker
and Skipper Arch went headlong into the icy water. Meanwhile Cecil,
Charlie and Art were trying to save the few caplin in the seine, working
feverishly for fear the bunt would foul around a rock before they got the
foots up. Art heard the splash and turning round, saw his father's white
head, peepin' over the opposite gunnel, just aft of the bow thole-pin.
Art said afterwards he didn't know what he'd best do first, try to get
the caplin or the old man. However, he grabbed his father's arm and
after much puffin' and blowin' and salt water f1yin' and shouts of
"Get on father side of the punt", and "Haul me in, don't shuff me
under," and "Keep the bunt kark in the middle," both the caplin and
Skipper Arch came aboard together, one on one side of the punt and
father on father.
