The major pollutants in diesel exhaust emissions are a direct result of the diesel combus� on process itself, and the type of fuel used also plays a major part in determining the composi� on of the exhaust. Diesel exhaust gas is composed of SO X , CO 2 , CO, HC, Smoke/ Par� culates and NO X . This ar� cle exclusively discusses about NO X reduc� on technique using SCR technology. NO X is formed during the combus� on process and is deemed as one of the most harmful entity to the environment, contribu� ng to acidifi ca� on, forma� on of ozone, nutrient enrichment and smog forma� on. The amount of NO X produced is a func� on of the maximum temperature in the cylinder, oxygen concentra� ons, and residence � me. At high cylinder temperatures, nitrogen from the intake air and fuel becomes ac� ve with the oxygen in the air forming oxides of nitrogen. Increasing the temperature of combus� on increases the amount of NO X . The best way to reduce NO X genera� on is to reduce peak cylinder temperatures and there are a number of ways that this can be achieved, however all methods cause a certain loss in engine effi ciency which increases the engine specifi c fuel consump� on. SCR stands for Selec� ve Cataly� c Reduc� on. The term selec� ve is used because the catalysis ac� on selec� vely targets the reduction of NO X amongst the other byproducts in the diesel exhaust gas. The important reac� ons which form the basis of NO X reduc� on using SCR technology are: 4NO + 4NH 3 + O 2 → 4N 2 + 6H 2 O 2NO 2 + 4NH 3 + O 2 → 3N 2 + 6H 2 O NO + NO 2 + 2NH 3 → 2N 2 + 3H 2 O DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is used in the SCR technology as its decomposi� on releases NH 3 which is required for the above men� oned reac� ons. DEF is an aqueous urea solution blended with 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. The solution may also be referred to as AUS32 or as AdBlueÒ, a trademark held by the German Associa� on of the Automobile Industry (VDA), which ensures that quality standards are maintained in accord with ISO 22241 specifi ca� ons. For an optimized diesel engine, SCR system has a be� er fuel consump� on advantage over EGR. Some of the important factors which determine the effi ciency of the SCR system are exhaust gas temperature, the quality of the fuel (sulphur content) and SCR catalyst volume. At op� mal condi� ons, using SCR technology, NOx conversion up to 95% can be achieved. This is the reason why SCR technology is one of the most sought out choice of the global OEM’s as the NOx reducing technique. COMPACT SCR DOSING SYSTEM Since SCR technology has become the preferred choice of OEM’s, the dosing systems have to address the requirements of compactness, efficiency, easy integra� on and cost eff ec� veness. A SCR dosing system incorporates the properties which caters to all the above points.
