PREMIER YACHTS
AIM HIGH IN THE
MEGAYACHT MARKET
Since June 2006 Premier Yachts has been a member of the highly
reputable and successful Horizon Group whose shipyards are based
in the coastal city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Premier Yacht’s facility occupies 24,000 m 2 (nearly six acres), and with 200m
(656ft) of water frontage, this special location gives Premier superb logistical
advantages for sea trials and delivery.
Premier Yachts strives to fulfil the yachtsman’s dream through building
custom megayachts that encompass vision and reflect individuality. Aptly
titled the ‘Premier Series’, the yard manufactures yachts of 32m (105ft) and
up. Since Premier Yachts was formed in 2005 it has continued to break
records for the largest yachts ever built in Taiwan, proving that the team and
its facilities can take on any challenge. The first record was created by ‘Miss
Rose’, the first Premier130 series yacht, with a hull length of 40m (132ft).
This record has since been broken by the 3rd Premier130 with a hull length
of 41m (135ft).
It is Horizon’s commitment to ensure comfort and seaworthiness with
unsurpassed quality. To date, an incredible five Premier 130+ yachts have
been sold. This is not surprising considering the Premier 130+ models
combine industry-leading design with advanced construction technologies,
built as standard to DNV HSLC Classification and the MCA Code of
Compliance.
Premier Yachts continually strive to improve the performance of every new
yacht and their recent builds have been upgraded with several new features;
the engines, genset power and navigation limits have all been upgraded,
along with an enlarged fuel and water capacity to enable a longer cruising
range.
In 2008 Premier yachts realised that in order to achieve the gloss, durability
and color retention that owners now expect, they needed to upgrade from
the traditional gelcoat to the superior finish that Awlgrip provides. Gelcoats
have a limited color choice and require high maintenance in order to keep
OCEAN SPRAY MARINE
Since its inception in 1989, Ocean Spray Marine
has been synonymous with quality throughout the
Southern hempisphere. Ocean Spray Marine is
also a firm advocate of Awlgrip and the
partnership between the two companies further
enhances this reputation.
Brett Allen (Owner/Director of OSM) once said that
“his passion has always been to work with the very
best’; “to set the standard” and “to give his customers
the finish that they can be proud of” and that by using
Awlgrip he has been able to deliver these qualities for
20 years
Brett’s apprenticeship years and affiliation with Awlgrip
began back in 1980 in Fort Lauderdale, USA, where
he was taught the basics of the trade. His thirst for
experience and knowledge of painting led Brett to
work with Cheoy Lee in China, CRN in Ancona, Italy,
and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
After almost 10 years working abroad Brett moved
back to his home town, Auckland, New Zealand and
formed Ocean Spray Marine. In the ensuing years
the company continued to grow and evolve and
eventually saw him take on work for Alloy Yachts.
In 1994 Brett embarked on another adventure in
Cape Town, South Africa, where he worked on
Corsta V, the biggest boat in South Africa at the time.
the yacht looking glossy. Repairs can
be labor intensive and the surface
difficult to clean due to its porous
nature. Awlgrip provides a durable
high gloss finish that is less porous
and more resistant to UV rays and
degradation – and as Premier Yachts
have discovered, all Awlgrip topcoats
are available in any color the owner
desires.
AWLCRAFT 2000
For the past year Premier Yachts have been using Awlcraft 2000 Metallics
with great success.
James Fwu, a licensed marine architect who earned his Master's Degree in
Naval Architecture engineering from National Taiwan University, is in charge
of management and construction operations at Premier Yachts. Awlgrip
would like to congratulate James and his team on the success of the Premier
Series and look forward to an excellent long-term relationship with them!
After returning to New Zealand Brett formed a close
working relationship with Southern Spar’s and
became heavily involved in Team NZ’s Americas Cup
boats and race boats.
In 2004 Brett relocated Ocean Spray Marine to
Brisbane, Australia where his team continues to
apply finishes to some of the world’s best
superyachts. Ocean Spray Marine are proud to be
responsible for attracting 13 superyachts to Brisbane
that otherwise were destined to dock elsewhere.
"We have had amazing success encouraging
overseas superyachts to Australia for extensive paint
re-fits based on ‘word of mouth’ referrals from
satisfied skippers." reports Brett
Brett and Ocean Spray Marine depend on the
consistent quality that they have come to trust and
expect from Awlgrip products. Wherever Brett is
in the world he can always purchase the Awlgrip
products he needs and can always obtain the
professional advice of an Awlgrip Technical
Representative that he has come to rely on.
With over 30 years experience and having managed
the painting of over 100 superyachts, specializing in
the application of Awlgrip, the company is continuing
its evolution – Ocean Spray Marine is now
restructured as a project management company
specializing in new build and refit coatings systems.
Awlgrip wish Brett and Ocean Marine continued
success for the future!

VANCOUVER SHIPYARDS CARRY OUT
THE LARGEST REFIT IN NORTH AMERICA
It is without doubt that the M.Y. Attessa IV refit project in Vancouver is a project with plenty of big numbers.
Originally built for the chairman of Evergreen in 1997 she was the 25th largest Yacht in the world. The addition
of a further 32ft (10m) in length will see Attessa IV move to 21st place at just over 320ft (100m) LOA.
The extensive refit includes a re-styling of the exterior superstructure which has involved the use of many composite
panels and adding numerous sections to the vessel. These, and the hull extensions, have been faired in with an estimated
10,000 gallons (40,000 litres) of Awlfair. The selection of Awlfair was driven by a desire to have a strong and stable fairing
compound which would be easy to process. To facilitate this the first of the new filler mixing machines, developed specifically
to handle Awlfair by Michigan based Michael Engineering, was shipped to the Washington Group yard. To further reduce labor
time on this project the specification also incorporated Hullgard primers. These specially formulated primers allow for
overcoating with subsequent primers or fillers without the need for sanding. This not only reduces the workload but also the
cost of consumables and cuts down on dust generation.
Another first for this project is the use of an innovative new approach to applying a metallic, or other special effect, finish
to a large vessel area. Previously it has been a challenge to achieve a Yacht quality application over a large surface without
resorting to the use of weaker paint products designed for land based applications. Recently the Yacht and Aerospace
divisions have been finding new ways to take an AkzoNobel core technology to the sea and skies where the operating
environment is much harsher and Attessa IV is the first Superyacht to benefit from this.
The whole project, which is now in its second year of a three year schedule, is a compelling testament to the capabilities of
the Vancouver shipyards and local yacht industry that is supporting this project. Vancouver Shipyards have developed a solid reputation for the design, construction,
maintenance and repair of all types of vessels. The yards’ facilties boasts an impressive 22,500 sqft (2090m 2 ) fully enclosed paint shed as well as a 13,000 sqft
(1200m 2 ) covered paintshed. However, even these were not big enough for a project of this size and the work is being done under a custom built boat cover. When
completed the Washington Group plans to use this refit as a showcase of what can be done just over the border in the Pacific Northwest and Awlgrip is proud to
be a key part of this activity.
DELAWARE CHALLENGES
THE CAROLINAS AT
SMOOTH SPORTFISHERS.
Located in Delaware, North America, F&S Boatworks carefully blend
craftsmanship and technology to create custom built sportfishers
that have an additional uniqueness factor – that being the novel
‘variable deadrise longitudinally stepped vee hull design’.
The uniqueness of the design is down to the clever
arrangement of longitudinal steps which creates an ‘air cushion
ride’. The shape of the hull provides a cutting edge that knifes
smoothly into the water on re-entry as you come off a big wave
in the rough seas.
F&S
Hull Design
Typical
Hull Design
The construction technique of F&S is to cold mould with epoxy
and requires a full painted finish. Awlgrip Technical Service
Representative Fred Sommers sat with the team at the yard to
work out their best options. Jim Floyd, along with Joe Bonvetti
and a select group of craftsmen, uses the latest and highest
quality materials available to build yachts that perfectly fit their
owner’s needs and the paint specification is no exception.
For the latest 72ft (22m) Bandolera hull #12, Awlcraft 2000
topcoat was selected for inside the engine room as well as the
yacht exterior. Awlcraft 2000 delivers long lasting gloss with a
repairable finish which is perfectly suited for these hardworking
boats. Keeping the lines as smooth as the ride was achieved
with a combination of Awlgrip primers and Awlfair L.W.
F&S have recently taken advantage of the opportunity to
reduce labour time and ensure good mixing accuracy by using
the new Michael Engineering Awlfair mixing machine.
We asked the team at F&S what makes them choose Awlgrip
over the alternatives: “We have been very impressed with the
Awlfair and the mixing machine and the performance of the
product and the willingness of Awlgrip to develop systems for
our specific needs.” We think their customers will be just as
impressed as they enjoy the benefits of these clever designs as
they cruise down to the Caribbean.

ZEYDON Z60 LUXURY
SPORTSCRUISER
SAILING YACHTS
Zeydon is an innovative newcomer among European shipyards.
The design of the Zeydon Z60 yachts expresses the extraordinary
boatbuilding concept in a striking, elegant and direct manner. The
hydrodynamics and the hull design were developed in close
cooperation with yacht and boat designer Peter Bosgraaf and
even below the waterline, the Zeydon presents its perfect
synthesis of performance and aesthetics
The styling of the hull and the superstructures convey pure dynamics
and exhibit maximum design perfection in every detail of the
boatbuilding design: the exterior of the Z60 presents regatta-oriented
functionality, outstanding seaworthiness and a generously designed
deck area.
This approach seamlessly merges both performance and comfort
elements required in the boatbuilding segment, along with creating
SPIRIT YACHTS 100 ‘GAIA’
A breathtaking 30m (100ft) sailing superyacht weighing less than 50
tonnes; truly exceptional!
‘Gaia’, the Spirit 100 superyacht of supreme elegance and performance,
recently left the Spirit shipyard, to cruise the Mediterranean and take part in
this summer’s races. This includes the eagerly anticipated Maxi Yacht Rolex
Cup Sardinia (6 – 12th September 2009), one of the highlights of the
Mediterranean yachting season.
Designed and built in-house by Spirit to the highest quality, she represents
state of the art technology allied with uncompromising beauty and style,
bringing outstanding sailing performance.
Built using modern lightweight wood/epoxy technology with laser cut
stainless steel-reinforced ring frames, the Spirit 100 is very different from
most previous superyachts. The superyacht world has seen everything from
extreme minimalism to flamboyant complexity, but rarely, if ever before, has
a superyacht combined such classic beauty, laminar wood construction, the
latest underwater foil profiles and a highly efficient modern rig.
The lines and construction of the hull result in a yacht so strong and
lightweight that, with a powerful rig, fin & bulb keel and a semi-balanced
spade rudder, she takes maximum advantage of the elements resulting in
an easy sailing performance where wind speed and boat speed are often
as one. The hull form is perfectly drawn allowing the yacht to move through
the water creating minimal wake and a barely discernible quarter wave.
Her exterior represents all the purity of line and elegance that attract
admirers wherever Spirits sail. She is finished with only the highest quality
materials including the finest range of Awlgrip paints. The Spirit 100 uses
the full Awlgrip system from primers and fillers right up to Awlcraft 2000
topcoat; as used by all Spirits over the last ten years. GAIA had a full
re-spray this winter to change her color from Whisper Gray to Aqua Mist
as part of the Owner’s special request. Spirit Yachts use Awlgrip because
it's a total system with full compatibility - having experienced exceptionally
good long term results.
a striking and convincing overall design. The customer will discover
a unique yacht with a spacious, comfortable and relaxing feel.
From its construction, to its mechanical systems, to its electronics
package, even to the way it has been designed, a Zeydon is likely one
of the most innovative 60-footers ever built.
It is therefore no surprise that Zeydon chose a breathtaking shade of
Awlgrip blue for their first yacht to be presented to the public last fall, a
rather clear statement of the boat builder’s focus on innovation and the
aspiration to bring a fresh breeze to the yachting segment.
“
Zeydon is different – we chose the color blue because
it perfectly communicates the characteristics that
determine our corporate identity: progressiveness,
originality, courage, strict authenticity and infinite
emotion - Zeydon explains.
The striking shade of blue coupled with the outstanding high gloss
Awlgrip Topcoat finsh truly makes this yacht and eye-catching marvel.
Sprit Yachts was established in 1993 and is led by Sean McMillan.
The company is now widely recognised as the most significant builder
of modern Classics worldwide with a reputation for craftsmanship that is
difficult (if not impossible) to match. Spirit Yachts has an unrivalled in-depth
knowledge of contemporary wood/epoxy techniques which has been
acquired through the building of many varied yachts in this superb method.
AWL®FAIR L.W. MIXING MACHINE PAGE 5
AWARD WINNING DEVELOPMENT
INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY
For the last 35 years Awlgrip has been the market leader not only due to its world
class product range but also through the desire to put the customer first. Awlgrip is
well known for its hands-on problem solving approach. Through this approach
Awlgrip has strived to identify and develop ways to increase our customer’s overall
productivity. The result of one such development is the Awlfair Filling Mixing Machine.
THE NEED
Following several months of research by the North American division of Awlgrip, an
opportunity to develop a unique filler mixing machine specifically for use with Awlgrip Awlfair
L.W. Fairing Compound was evident.
In order to address the ever changing needs of the yacht industry the requirement for a
non-electric, low compression machine was required. This machine would be designed
to accurately, swiftly and consistently mix Awlfair L.W. without compromising the product
integrity.
COLLABORATION
A search within the industry to find suitable existing equipment was unsuccessful as current
technologies were often unable to meet all the requirements of Awlgrip. With no suitable
off-the-shelf product available the next phase of research was to identify a suitable partner
whom Awlgrip could collaborate with to jointly develop the specific and unique machine
required. Ultimately the search led to a Michigan-based company, Michael Engineering.
Following 2.5 years of development and numerous modifications of prototype machines the
Awlfair Mixing Machine was finalised. Modifications included replacement of all the pumps,
pipelines & casings, down to coating the machine with Awlgrip HS for protection. The end
result is a high tech 5 gallon mixing machine which safely, accurately and consistently mixes
Awlfair L.W. without any product compromise.
As well as extensive in-house testing, this new machine was also rigorously trialled in two
world class North American boat builders to fine tune the product for use in an industrial
workplace.
BENEFITS
With the Awlfair Mixing Machine applicators are able to eliminate the air pockets often seen
with hand mixing whilst easily mixing the correct quantity of Awlfair L.W. they require for the
job at hand with exceptional ease and accuracy. As the machine measures the precise ratio
of base to converter, no matter how small or large the job, the right quantity is produced,
helping to eliminate wastage and increase efficiency.
Not only is the product fully mixed, always in the exact ratio, the filling and fairing operation
can now be carried out by fewer people with less downtime mixing new material. One
customer was able to double the area filled with less than half the number of personnel as
previously required simply due to the increased efficiency of the mixing machine.
THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES...
“
With the Awlfair machine they are taking ½ the time to fair the boat.
Waste has been reduced and no clean up of the mixing table is required.
Working time is longer as time is not used up mixing the filler.
Comments from Alloy and YDL, New Zealand
Fairing crews like the mixing machine because it has reduced solvent clean up when hand
mixing and therefore has reduced our dirty solvent waste treatment.
Fred Rydberg, Delta Marine Seattle
The mixing machine is great. It’s ease of mobility means we can station it right next to the area
they are applying the Awlfair. David Sullivan, Washington Yachting Group, Canada
AWARDS
The Awlfair Mixing machine recently received an ‘honourable
mention’ in the Boatbuilding Methods & Materials category at the
IBEX Innovation Awards 2008. The IBEX Innovation Awards are
organised by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)
and judged by Boating Writers International (BWI). The Awards
recognise products that, amongst other criteria, best meet innovative
distinction from other products currently being manufactured and
that are a benefit to the industry and/or customer.
LAUNCH
The machine, and its benefits, have been presented
to several yards in North America
and the Asia Pacific region.
The following applicators are now using these
machines every day with great results:
