Schloss Beberbeck<br />

Resort<br />

Foreword<br />

Let’s not be modest. After all, it has <strong>of</strong>ten been called “Europe’s largest tourism project.”<br />

Spann<strong>in</strong>g nearly 2,000 acres and boast<strong>in</strong>g five hotels, four golf courses and some 600 vacation cottages<br />

and villas, it’s no wonder that it makes such a big impression. Yet its sheer size is not what makes<br />

Schloss Beberbeck Resort so unique and conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g. There’s much more. Its myriad facets, its wealth <strong>of</strong><br />

possibilities, that’s what it is. The magical landscape <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>rs Grimm, <strong>the</strong> proud tradition <strong>of</strong> horse<br />

breed<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> first-class golf courses, <strong>the</strong> primeval forests, <strong>the</strong> venerable avenues, <strong>the</strong> beautifully<br />

preserved Neoclassical architecture and all <strong>of</strong> this ideally situated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> –<br />

that is <strong>true</strong> wealth. That is Schloss Beberbeck Resort.<br />

Come and see for yourself.<br />

A wealth <strong>of</strong> <strong>tale</strong>s<br />

Fairy <strong>tale</strong>s and treasures<br />

Take a few m<strong>in</strong>utes and <strong>come</strong> along on a trip. Deep <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> Europe, deep<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>. Here, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>the</strong>re are still mysterious forests with<br />

century-old trees, even older legendary castles and an enchant<strong>in</strong>g landscape. This is <strong>the</strong> area that <strong>in</strong>spired<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>rs Grimm to assemble <strong>the</strong>ir collection <strong>of</strong> <strong>fairy</strong> <strong>tale</strong>s. Here is located <strong>the</strong> Sababurg, <strong>the</strong> castle <strong>in</strong><br />

which, accord<strong>in</strong>g to local legend, Sleep<strong>in</strong>g Beauty waited a hundred years for her pr<strong>in</strong>ce. And<br />

Trendelburg, ano<strong>the</strong>r castle about 6 miles away, is where Rapunzel let down her<br />

hair <strong>in</strong> order to be saved by a noble hero.<br />

Today, <strong>the</strong> area with <strong>the</strong> old oak and beech forest is called Re<strong>in</strong>hard Forest<br />

and still conjures up visions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>fairy</strong> <strong>tale</strong>s from here. The region is <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> German<br />

Fairy Tale Road; a wide variety <strong>of</strong> museums and events keep <strong>the</strong> old legends and <strong>tale</strong>s alive for future<br />

generations. For days on end, visitors can explore <strong>the</strong> <strong>fairy</strong> <strong>tale</strong> trails, listen to storytellers and attend<br />

<strong>the</strong>ater performances. And if you ever wander <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest, you’ll f<strong>in</strong>d small timber-framed<br />

houses or castle ru<strong>in</strong>s from <strong>the</strong> Middle Ages, magical and mythic. Right here, directly between<br />

Sababurg and Trendelburg, is situated a <strong>true</strong> treasure –<br />

<strong>the</strong> Schloss Beberbeck Resort.<br />

A wealth <strong>of</strong> play<strong>in</strong>g areas

Golf and grandeur<br />

Golf – a sport for visionaries who love to let <strong>the</strong>ir imag<strong>in</strong>ation roam and<br />

be <strong>in</strong>spired by <strong>the</strong> vastness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> landscape. The resort’s nearly 2,000 acres provide a<br />

unique opportunity for just this. Integrated <strong>in</strong> an idyllic landscape featur<strong>in</strong>g tranquil lakes<br />

and ponds along with venerable, solitary oak trees, four dist<strong>in</strong>ct golf courses <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

Situated directly next to <strong>the</strong> castle is <strong>the</strong> 18-hole Schloss Golf Course –<br />

Equestrian sports and tradition<br />

Beberbeck and horses – <strong>the</strong>y simply belong toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

As early as <strong>the</strong> 18th century, <strong>the</strong> horses bred here caused a huge furor. Orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

<strong>the</strong> herds <strong>of</strong> horses that grew up nearly wild <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sababurg region, <strong>the</strong>y were known for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

special toughness, strength and speed. Several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beberbeck’s male horses were later<br />

used as breed<strong>in</strong>g stallions at <strong>the</strong> famous Trakehnen Stud Farm. This rich tradition is<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r treasure for <strong>the</strong> Schloss Beberbeck Resort, and one that<br />

we are virtually obligated to pursue.<br />

The resort’s rid<strong>in</strong>g activities beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first <strong>in</strong>troductory course<br />

with pony stables and a comprehensive equestrian center, which <strong>in</strong>cludes a large arena with<br />

spectator stands, a longe<strong>in</strong>g arena and an arena with a horse walker. Spacious paddocks and a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> equestrian facilities from dressage and show jump<strong>in</strong>g to all-wea<strong>the</strong>r and tournament venues fulfill all<br />

wishes. In <strong>the</strong> expansion phase, a harness and thoroughbred rac<strong>in</strong>g track as well as a polo field are<br />

also planned. Children learn basic horse handl<strong>in</strong>g and rid<strong>in</strong>g skills here; adult hobby riders can<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own horse and board it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stables. The famous “Wild” horses may no longer<br />

be bred here, yet each visitor, whe<strong>the</strong>r child or pr<strong>of</strong>essional rider, is guaranteed<br />

to experience a sense <strong>of</strong> achievement.<br />

A wealth <strong>of</strong> history<br />

First mention <strong>of</strong> Beberbeck <strong>in</strong><br />

various records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Benedict<strong>in</strong>e<br />

monks. In 1273, it is<br />

explicitly referred to as a village.<br />

Its name means quite simply<br />

“Beaver Brook” and <strong>come</strong>s<br />

from <strong>the</strong> animals that used to<br />

be common at that time.<br />

Ages.<br />

Beberbeck stud farm, around 1870<br />

1724<br />

Landgrave Carl <strong>of</strong> Hesse-Kassel<br />

founds a stud farm <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region<br />

and moves his horse breed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

operations, which had taken<br />

place s<strong>in</strong>ce 1490 at nearby Sababurg,<br />

to Beberbeck. Sababurg’s<br />

famous “wild” horses are given<br />

a new home and real stables.

1823<br />

The region’s heyday. Electoral<br />

Pr<strong>in</strong>ce William II <strong>of</strong> Hesse-Kassel<br />

erects a new stud farm, which<br />

would serve as <strong>the</strong> new<br />

model for horse breed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Hessian region. The master<br />

builder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court, Johann<br />

Conrad Bromeis – one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

most dist<strong>in</strong>guished Neoclassical<br />

architects – receives <strong>the</strong><br />

commission.<br />

1833<br />

After <strong>the</strong> Electoral Pr<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

abdicates power, <strong>the</strong> position<br />

<strong>of</strong> master builder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court<br />

also changes hands. Julius<br />

Eigen Ruhl concludes<br />

Bromeis’s nearly f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

work. The Beberbeck Stud<br />

Farm with castle and <strong>of</strong>ficiants’<br />

residence is completed <strong>in</strong> full<br />

splendor. Today, it is one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> few rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Neoclassical<br />

In connection with <strong>the</strong> repa-<br />

rations from <strong>the</strong> First World<br />

and a state <strong>in</strong>stitution is established.<br />

A revitalization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
