Schloss Beberbeck
Resort
Foreword
Let’s not be modest. After all, it has often been called “Europe’s largest tourism project.”
Spanning nearly 2,000 acres and boasting five hotels, four golf courses and some 600 vacation cottages
and villas, it’s no wonder that it makes such a big impression. Yet its sheer size is not what makes
Schloss Beberbeck Resort so unique and convincing. There’s much more. Its myriad facets, its wealth of
possibilities, that’s what it is. The magical landscape of the Brothers Grimm, the proud tradition of horse
breeding, the first-class golf courses, the primeval forests, the venerable avenues, the beautifully
preserved Neoclassical architecture and all of this ideally situated in the heart of Germany –
that is true wealth. That is Schloss Beberbeck Resort.
Come and see for yourself.
A wealth of tales
Fairy tales and treasures
Take a few minutes and come along on a trip. Deep in the heart of Europe, deep
in the heart of Germany. Here, in the middle of the country, there are still mysterious forests with
century-old trees, even older legendary castles and an enchanting landscape. This is the area that inspired
the Brothers Grimm to assemble their collection of fairy tales. Here is located the Sababurg, the castle in
which, according to local legend, Sleeping Beauty waited a hundred years for her prince. And
Trendelburg, another castle about 6 miles away, is where Rapunzel let down her
hair in order to be saved by a noble hero.
Today, the area with the old oak and beech forest is called Reinhard Forest
and still conjures up visions of the fairy tales from here. The region is the center of the German
Fairy Tale Road; a wide variety of museums and events keep the old legends and tales alive for future
generations. For days on end, visitors can explore the fairy tale trails, listen to storytellers and attend
theater performances. And if you ever wander into the middle of the forest, you’ll find small timber-framed
houses or castle ruins from the Middle Ages, magical and mythic. Right here, directly between
Sababurg and Trendelburg, is situated a true treasure –
the Schloss Beberbeck Resort.
Centrally located
It’s actually right in the middle; take a look yourself. Hardly any
other place is more centrally located in Germany than the Schloss Beberbeck Resort.
The major urban centers of Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne are all about the same
distance from Beberbeck. But of even greater importance: Europe’s largest metropolitan area,
the Rhine-Ruhr area with its 18 million residents, is just a short trip away. And living in a radius
of up to four hours by car are more than 81 million people. This gigantic potential is so far
unparalleled in the German resort market. Plus, it’s an unbeatable argument for
attracting conferences, congresses and seminars.
The Schloss Beberbeck Resort is easily accessible for international visitors.
Several airports are just a two- to three-hour drive away, including the Frankfurt Main airport, a
major hub for international travelers. Traveling to Beberbeck by train or car is also easy and
convenient. Thanks to nearby freeways running north-south and east-west, the journey is quick
A wealth of natural beauty
Old forests, vast fields
Gently rolling hills, sleepy lakes and vast fields, from which the early
A wealth of playing areas
Golf and grandeur
Golf – a sport for visionaries who love to let their imagination roam and
be inspired by the vastness of the landscape. The resort’s nearly 2,000 acres provide a
unique opportunity for just this. Integrated in an idyllic landscape featuring tranquil lakes
and ponds along with venerable, solitary oak trees, four distinct golf courses offer
exciting athletic competition.
Situated directly next to the castle is the 18-hole Schloss Golf Course –
designed for the highest standards in golf and conceived of as a tournament-ready course with
spectator areas. Particularly competitive golfers will be delighted with the bordering Berg Golf Course,
which features the qualities of a typical Scottish inland course, including the altitude. Nestled
on an idyllic forest lake, the course’s clubhouse is at the core of a wide range of golf offerings.
The golf academy provides ideal practice opportunities on pitching,
chipping and putting greens, a 9-hole family course and an executive course for all handicaps.
Both can be combined to create an 18-hole course for practice purposes. Naturally,
the golfers will find a stylish ambience before and after a game. The attractive
clubhouse contains bistros, bars and also a fireplace room:
for cultivated exchange among visionaries.
Equestrian sports and tradition
Beberbeck and horses – they simply belong together.
As early as the 18th century, the horses bred here caused a huge furor. Originating from
the herds of horses that grew up nearly wild in the Sababurg region, they were known for their
special toughness, strength and speed. Several of the Beberbeck’s male horses were later
used as breeding stallions at the famous Trakehnen Stud Farm. This rich tradition is
another treasure for the Schloss Beberbeck Resort, and one that
we are virtually obligated to pursue.
The resort’s riding activities begin in the first introductory course
with pony stables and a comprehensive equestrian center, which includes a large arena with
spectator stands, a longeing arena and an arena with a horse walker. Spacious paddocks and a variety
of equestrian facilities from dressage and show jumping to all-weather and tournament venues fulfill all
wishes. In the expansion phase, a harness and thoroughbred racing track as well as a polo field are
also planned. Children learn basic horse handling and riding skills here; adult hobby riders can
bring their own horse and board it in the stables. The famous “Wild” horses may no longer
be bred here, yet each visitor, whether child or professional rider, is guaranteed
to experience a sense of achievement.
A wealth of history
First mention of Beberbeck in
various records of the Benedictine
monks. In 1273, it is
explicitly referred to as a village.
Its name means quite simply
“Beaver Brook” and comes
from the animals that used to
be common at that time.
Ages.
Beberbeck stud farm, around 1870
1724
Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel
founds a stud farm in the region
and moves his horse breeding
operations, which had taken
place since 1490 at nearby Sababurg,
to Beberbeck. Sababurg’s
famous “wild” horses are given
a new home and real stables.
1823
The region’s heyday. Electoral
Prince William II of Hesse-Kassel
erects a new stud farm, which
would serve as the new
model for horse breeding in
the Hessian region. The master
builder of the court, Johann
Conrad Bromeis – one of the
most distinguished Neoclassical
architects – receives the
commission.
1833
After the Electoral Prince
abdicates power, the position
of master builder of the court
also changes hands. Julius
Eigen Ruhl concludes
Bromeis’s nearly finished
work. The Beberbeck Stud
Farm with castle and officiants’
residence is completed in full
splendor. Today, it is one of
the few remaining Neoclassical
after 1929
In connection with the repa-
rations from the First World
War, the stud farm is closed
and a state institution is established.
A revitalization of the
