FOOTBALL BRINGS FUN
A big fall football season is already
in full swing for Cougar rooters.
Here is a rundown on the remaining
games and social functions to be
held in conjunction:
Arizona State University at Pullman,

University of Utah at Salt Lake
City, Oct. IS, 1:30 p.m. Alumni living
in Utah will hold a pre-game gathering
on Friday night. Announcements

Three Alums Named
Appointaent of three alumni to key
positions was one of the highlights
of the annual summer meeting of the
Alumni Association Board of Directors
held in Bellingham on Aug. 27.
Mrs. Elmer Harris (BETTY KIM2EY,
'41), Seattle, is the new alumnae director
at large for the west side of
the state. At WSU, she was president
of Associated Women Students and a
member of the Board of Control, Mortar
Board, Omicron Nu and Kappa Kappa
Gamma, and was an ROTC sponsor. Her
husband is a 1942 WSU graduate.
Mrs.Bill Rathbun (JO NEWPORT,'39),
Richland, was re-appointed alumnae
director at large for the east side.
CLARENCE L. HIX, '09, Pullman, was
Uhiversity of Arizona at Tucson,
Nov. 12, 2:30 p.m. Alumni living in
Arizona and New Mexico will be notified
of any plans made for a WSU gathering.
University of Washington at Spokane,
Nov. 19, 1:30 p.m. The traditional
rally dance, sponsored by the
Spokane area alumni,will be held Friday
night from 9 p.m. to 1 a. m. in
the Empire Ballroom at the Ridpath
Hotel.

Portland area alumni are sponsoring
showings of films of all Cougar
games each Thursday night. The meetings
are held at the 3 Star Restaurant,

of Outstanding Contributions to
the Training of Veterinarians in the
Diagnosis of Foreign Animal Diseases.
Dr. Maurer, Bryan, is associate dean
of the Texas A&M College of Veterinary
Medicine. Dr. Wilbur, Austin, is
veterinarian in charge of animal disease
eradication and animal inspection
and quarantine for the USDA in
Texas.

SOLBERG HOPKINS
VC Kill Clower
NORMAN L. CLOWERS.'60.'63. was killed
this suamer in a Viet Cong ambush in
Khan Hoa Province. He was a public
safety adviser for the Agency for International
Development. He had been
in the Tacoaa Police Department from
1948 to 1956. In 1957. he went to
Viet Nam as a police adviser. Upon
his return. he enrolled at WSU. In
1960-61. he was chief of police in
Laramie. Wyo. He later was a private
detective and lie detector examiner
in Tacoma. He returned to Viet Nam
last March.
OFC to Solberg
Capt. HAROLD A. SOLBERG.'56. Da Nang.
AB. has been decorated twice for heroism
as a helicopter search and rescue
pilot. He received the Distinguished
Flying Cross for rescuing two
persons from a downed helicopter near
Quang Tri. He received the Silver
Star for rescuing three survivors of
an AC-47 Dragon Ship shot down near
Ashau.

Lt. Col. ALFRED H. HOPKINS JR •• '49,
Langley AFB. Va., was the first Air
Force pilot to log 200 missions in an
F-5 Freedom Fighter. He commanded an
F-5 squadron at Bien Hoa Air Base.

cluster for missions in Southeast Asia.

ALUMNI DEATHS
HENRY L.CHITTENDEN, e'97, Abbotsford,
B.C., died Febr. 26. He was a retired
construction engineer for Grant-Smith
and Company. He was right tackle on
the 1894 (then) W.A.C. football team
and in his later years .ade several
trips back to Pullman to watch the
Cougar teams in action. He was wounded
in action in World War I as a captain
of a command of Canadian engineers.
J. HOUSTON McCROSKEY, '09, Spokane,
died Aug. 19. He was a past president
of ' the Alumni Association. He
had farmed in Garfield until he moved
to Spokane in 1931 to join Broadview
Dairy Co. which later beca.e a subsidiary
of Carnation Co. He retired
in 1957 as general manager and president.
His many civic positions included:

Park Board, county chairman of
the American Red Cross, president of
the board of directors of the Spokane

Dr. ERNEST MUZZALL, '23, '24, Ellensburg,
died Aug. 21. He was a professor
emeritus at Central Washington
State College. He was superintendent
of schools at Garfield from 1925-28,
at Ritzville from 1928-32, and Toppenish
from 1932-38. He joined CWSC
as professor of education and director
of public service in 1938, became
dean of instruction in 1941, and was
named director of graduate studies in
1954. He retired in 1961. Survivors

two years during the 'thirties, he

later years he returned to teaching

has died. He was a sporting goods

has died. He had been with Dupont
Co. and General Electric Co. for 38
years. He was a specialist in technical

HARVEY L. COLE, '29, Lafayette, Calif.,
died in March. He was a general
contractor with VanBakkelen-Cole Co.
GEORGE C. STARLUND, '30, Seal Beach,
Calif., died this suamer. He was regional
coordinator for the Bureau of
Commercial Fisheries at Terminal Island.
He was director of the Washington
State Department of Public Assistance
from 1957 to 1961. He previously
had been assistant state license
director. From 1961 to 1965 he
was Washington State Fisheries director.
At one time, he was WSU editor
