positions was one of the highlights<br />
of the annual summer meeting of the<br />
Alumni Association Board of Directors<br />
held in Bellingham on Aug. 27.<br />
Mrs. Elmer Harris (BETTY KIM2EY,<br />
'41), Seattle, is the new alumnae director<br />
at large for the west side of<br />
the state. At WSU, she was president<br />
of Associated Women Students and a<br />
member of the Board of Control, Mortar<br />
Board, Omicron Nu and Kappa Kappa<br />
Gamma, and was an ROTC sponsor. Her<br />
husband is a 1942 WSU graduate.<br />
Mrs.Bill Rathbun (JO NEWPORT,'39),<br />
Richland, was re-appointed alumnae<br />

NORMAN L. CLOWERS.'60.'63. was killed<br />
this suamer in a Viet Cong ambush in<br />
Khan Hoa Province. He was a public<br />
safety adviser for the Agency for International<br />
Development. He had been<br />
in the Tacoaa Police Department from<br />
1948 to 1956. In 1957. he went to<br />
Viet Nam as a police adviser. Upon<br />
his return. he enrolled at WSU. In<br />
1960-61. he was chief of police in<br />
Laramie. Wyo. He later was a private<br />
detective and lie detector examiner<br />
in Tacoma. He returned to Viet Nam<br />
last March.<br />

Capt. HAROLD A. SOLBERG.'56. Da Nang.<br />
AB. has been decorated twice for heroism<br />
as a helicopter search and rescue<br />
pilot. He received the Distinguished<br />
Flying Cross for rescuing two<br />
persons from a downed helicopter near<br />
Quang Tri. He received the Silver<br />
Star for rescuing three survivors of<br />
an AC-47 Dragon Ship shot down near<br />
Ashau.<br />

ALUMNI DEATHS<br />
HENRY L.CHITTENDEN, e'97, Abbotsford,<br />
B.C., died Febr. 26. He was a retired<br />
construction engineer for Grant-Smith<br />
and Company. He was right tackle on<br />
the 1894 (then) W.A.C. football team<br />
and in his later years .ade several<br />
trips back to Pullman to watch the<br />
Cougar teams in action. He was wounded<br />
in action in World War I as a captain<br />
of a command of Canadian engineers.<br />
J. HOUSTON McCROSKEY, '09, Spokane,<br />
died Aug. 19. He was a past president<br />
of ' the Alumni Association. He<br />
had farmed in Garfield until he moved<br />
to Spokane in 1931 to join Broadview<br />
Dairy Co. which later beca.e a subsidiary<br />
of Carnation Co. He retired<br />
in 1957 as general manager and president.<br />
His many civic positions included:<br />
member of the Spokane City<br />
Planning Commission, member of Spokane<br />
Park Board, county chairman of<br />
the American Red Cross, president of<br />
the board of directors of the Spokane<br />
County Good Roads Association, board<br />
• ember of the Inland Auto Association,<br />
president of <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />
Milk Dealers Association, and district<br />
governor of Sigma Nu fraternity.<br />
Survivors include his wife, the former<br />
MARION FLOOD, 'II, and two daughters,<br />
Mrs. Lee J. Sahlin (JOAN Mc<br />
CROSKEY, '49), Spokane, and Mrs. Joseph<br />
W. Rupley (JANET McCROSKEY, '34),<br />

R.L. LATHROP,e'14, Walla Walla, died<br />
in July.<br />
Dr. ERNEST MUZZALL, '23, '24, Ellensburg,<br />
died Aug. 21. He was a professor<br />
emeritus at Central <strong>Washington</strong><br />
<strong>State</strong> College. He was superintendent<br />
of schools at Garfield from 1925-28,<br />
at Ritzville from 1928-32, and Toppenish<br />
from 1932-38. He joined CWSC<br />
as professor of education and director<br />
of public service in 1938, became<br />
dean of instruction in 1941, and was<br />
named director of graduate studies in<br />
1954. He retired in 1961. Survivors<br />
include his wife,the former ELLA MUS<br />
TARO, '24, and a son, Dr. HUGH MUZ<br />
ZALL, '53, Edmonds.<br />
JOEL L. FOULON, '24, Cheney, died April<br />
25.<br />
LINCOLN MEEKER,'23, Plainfield, N.J.,<br />
died March 24. Survivors include his<br />
wife, the former THELMA SHAFER, '24.<br />
JESSE W. CURTIS, '26, Clarkston, died<br />
July 29. He was a public school superintendent<br />
in Inland Empire Schools<br />
for many years prior to 1930. For<br />
two years during the 'thirties, he<br />
published the Wilbur Register. In<br />
later years he returned to teaching<br />
and retired in 1950. Survivors include<br />
two sons, H. MARSHALL CURTIS,<br />
'47, Lewiston, Idaho, and CARROLL A.<br />
CURTIS, '48, Oakland, Calif.<br />
BREN H. STARCHER, '28, Medford, Ore. ,<br />
has died. He was a sporting goods<br />
salesman and gunsmith for the Rogue<br />
. Sportsman. Survivors include wife,<br />
the former OLIVE SWAN, '28•<br />
FREDERICK E. JOCHEN, '28, Richland,<br />
has died. He had been with Dupont<br />
Co. and General Electric Co. for 38<br />
years. He was a specialist in technical<br />
personnel. Survivors include<br />
his wife, the former JAYE ISRAEL,'28.<br />
HARVEY L. COLE, '29, Lafayette, Calif.,<br />
died in March. He was a general<br />
contractor with VanBakkelen-Cole Co.<br />
GEORGE C. STARLUND, '30, Seal Beach,<br />
Calif., died this suamer. He was regional<br />
coordinator for the Bureau of<br />
Commercial Fisheries at Terminal Island.<br />
He was director of the <strong>Washington</strong><br />
<strong>State</strong> Department of Public Assistance<br />
from 1957 to 1961. He previously<br />
had been assistant state license<br />
director. From 1961 to 1965 he<br />
was <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>State</strong> Fisheries director.<br />
At one time, he was WSU editor<br />
of publications. Survivors include<br />
his wife, the former JOY BARCLAY,'24.<br />
