RABBI DR. GIDEON M. GOLDENHOLZ HAZZAN MICHAEL S. KRAUSMAN
Throughout Jewish history, the Passover Seder has become
more than just a ceremony that we perform. Its intended goal is to
establish a mood and context in which we not only read about the
story of the Exodus, but recreate it as well. We gather as a family
and eat matzah, as did our enslaved ancestors in Egypt; and we recline
as we drink four cups of wine. At the Seder table, we take
pride in declaring our freedom.
The Torah describes for us that God instructed the Jewish people
that, while they remained indoors protected from the death
and suffering God inflicted on the Egyptians that night, they were
required to eat the Pesach sacrifice, matzah and maror. That the
Jewish nation ate the sacrifice and had time only to eat matzah
that night makes perfect sense. But why did an enslaved nation
have to eat bitter herbs? What reminder of the suffering could
they have needed? They had not even left Egypt at that point in
time! The requirement to eat maror in Egypt, however, suggests a
profound idea. While surrounded by darkness and not yet glimpsing
the light of dawn, the Israelites began to imagine themselves
as free men and women. While remaining seated around their
meager tables in Egypt, they had the spiritual courage to imagine
a different time and place. While daring to feel the excitement and
challenge of an imagined new life as they “tasted” the future, they
needed to eat from the bitter herbs in order to remind them of the
oppression.
We can do the same. As we eat maror, we too, can have the
courage to imagine ourselves in a brighter and exciting future.
We can imagine a better, more peaceful and safer world. We can
imagine being liberated from challenging economic times. We can
imagine a world free from oppression and terror.
As we approach the holiday of our liberation and spiritual birth
and growth.
I extend to each of you and your family a Chag Kasher
V’sameach.
Rabbi Dr. Gideon M. Goldenholz
OUR FOUNDATION CORNER
Lawrence Wiener, CLU, ChFC, AEP
In our last newsletter we discussed the gift annuity program
available through our Temple Endowment Fund. The article
was focused on fulfilling the financial needs of those individuals
who rely on fixed incomes. There is, however, another
group who can use this form of instrument to great advantage.
We pay a high price for the right to die in this country. It is
called the Estate Tax. Currently, anyone with an estate in excess
of $2 million dollars is required to pay as much as 55% tax.
Some assets are doubly taxed, both income and estate (IRA’s,
insurance annuities, pension assets etc.). A gift annuity with
our Endowment fund can reduce both of these taxes without
necessarily reducing the inheritance a person can leave to children
and grandchildren. Should you be interested in pursuing
such a relationship or learning more about techniques utilized
to minimize taxation, help the Temple and get more to your
heirs, get in touch with the Temple office.
Pesach is the Jewish holiday during which family traditions are
established and nurtured. As we begin cleaning the house, inviting
our guests and preparing for the Seder, a flood of magnificent
memories and joyful experiences is unleashed in our hearts and
minds and in those of our children. It is incumbent upon us, as
parents, to carefully create these magical memories and craft them
for our kids so that they will have wonderful experiences that will
last a lifetime and beyond.
Adding to the experiential nature of the Seder, is an extremely
effective way of accomplishing this mandate. This task can be accomplished
in many different ways- some quite simple and others
a little more involved. An easy way to begin is by supplying toy
percussion instruments, such as tambourines and drums, so that
even the youngest of the family can participate in the Seder. Another
simple but effective way to engage our children is through
props, puppets and costumes. Using toy elements of the plagues,
asking participants to dress as characters from the Passover story,
such as Moses or Pharaoh, or using puppets to act out part of the
story, are all work well. Experiential games are also quite effective.
For example, we begin our Seder by handing out cards with the
names of each element of the Seder as well as an appropriate picture
on them. As we progress through the evening, each participant
is asked to look at the card they have been given and, at the
appropriate time, to affix it by Velcro to the board at the front of
the room. A close friend often writes clues to the location of the
Afikomen on the back of a jigsaw puzzle, which all of the participants
must work together to assemble in order to find the hidden
Matza.
Of course music is a key component of any successful Seder.
Make sure to allow time for the children to sing all of the songs
they learn in school. Individualize the Seder by having guests and
relatives with different traditions share their favorite melodies. It
is also important to allow children every opportunity to ask questions
and to offer information they have learned – it is a great opportunity
to show them how much you value Jewish Education.
In addition, the Seder can be also be individualized by asking relatives
and guests to share their own stories of liberation or escape
from oppression, poverty or any other such adversity. Even telling
the history of your special Kiddish Cup, Seder Plate or other Seder
element will enhance the personal nature of your Seder. Such stories
give an immediate quality to your Seder celebration.
To truly make your Seder celebration an experiential occasion,
try erecting a “tent” in a room other than the dinning room in
which to conduct the Seder. In any event, it is a good idea, especially
for families with children, to have the beginning of the Seder
in a different location than the meal. This has the added advantage
of giving the children opportunity to move around and not be “enslaved”
in one room. One can simulate liberation from the tent in
the dessert to the luxury of the modern dinning room.
Of course, the preceding are only a few of many possibilities
that exist to add unique meaning to your Seder. One final suggestion,
however, provide a variety of Haggadot for both children and
adults. Modern versions of the Passover eve service have explanations,
activities, beautiful pictures and other tools to stimulate in-
Our present Board has just met for the last time before the annual
election and subsequent installation. Under the leadership of
Judy Wiener this Board demonstrated what it means to lead by example.
Working tirelessly days and nights our leaders helped guide
the Temple to new levels of excellence. Membership outreach and
retention was very skillfully executed this past year. All new members
signing up described their appreciation for the Temple Sinai
warmth, not only to me but to their friends and relatives as well
leading to more members. Our PR and marketing efforts set a new
standard for excellence that the new Board will ensure continues.
Temple Sinai of Hollywood has been working hard to meet our
budgetary goals, and with the national economy suffering a new
reality we will depend even more on your financial support as we
continue our pursuit of a growing and vigorous membership base.
We all know it can be done. Reaching into your pocket or finding
the time to participate in committee work is always challenging but
oh so rewarding.
Look around you next time you are in the Temple and ask yourselves
if you like what you see and feel and then take the lead by
giving of yourself. It is well worth it, for yourselves, your children
and community.
CARYN GRAINER DUNN
President
“Leadership has been defined as the ability to hide your panic from others”
–Anonymous
It is with humility and gratitude that I assume the role of President
of my beloved Temple Sinai.
Whatever your politics, we have this last American Presidential
election witnessed the introduction of a new concept long overdue-
the opportunity of each person to make a difference, to rally,
to participate, to have a voice in our future, regardless of financial
status, age, job or education. Energy and support was drawn, motivated,
from across our country and across the world. The key –
COMMUNICATION. Even though we have inaugurated a new
President, I still receive e-mails asking for my help and my opinion.
An American educator once wrote that, “The greater the loyalty
of a group toward a group, the greater is the motivation among
the members to achieve the goals of the group and the greater the
probability that the group will achieve its goals.”
We are a family. Each family member has a talent, has something
to offer, regardless of age or status. Do yourself a servicejourney
with your leaders to achieve the goals of our family. While
we, as your leaders, will listen to you, go outside of yourself and
help the common goal.
That goal is to keep our Temple thriving, to keep our Temple
hamish. I realized the depth of my commitment to the Temple
when I started picking up garbage on the lawn. It’s my home.
Dates and times of committee meetings will be announced in
our publications. If you are a teacher, presently or have been a
teacher, join the education committee. If you are a past or present
leader of any organization, join the membership committee. If you
like to cook, help prepare Shabbat onegs. If you can read Torah or
Haftorah, great! You get the idea.
I keep asking myself, about this economic stimulus package: why
stimulate from the top, why the trickle down theory? As Jon Stewart
said, why not trickle up?
We can only be as successful as our member’s loyal and motivation,
when we interact, when we trust that we all have the best interests
of the shul at the center of our heart and when we
communicate- being informed of the joys and the obstacles.
Always ask: What can I contribute that will be in the best interests
of Temple Sinai’s continued health?
To our always everywhere past President Judy Wiener- your
boundry-less service to our shul serves as a role model of how one
persons vision can lead to endless achievements. We thank the
past executive Board and General Board for their service.
I am thrilled with the talented persons who have agreed to serve
our shul the next two years as members of the Executive Board
and Board of Directors. A huge resource, I will call upon the past
leadership, Presidents and the Board members alike, for their support
and to help resolve issues so as not to recreate the wheel.
Grab on to the energy. The reward is heavenly.
KASSELMAN SCHOOL NEWS
Donna Anton, Director
It was very simple to be a part of our school mitzvah project
called “TREES TALK.” All you had to do was write on a paper
leaf your family’s mitzvah story or one you had planned for the
near future, decorate it, and return it to your child’s teacher. Once
all the leaves were collected, they would be displayed on our
blooming trees in the school’s hallway. The trees started to grow
as parents returned their leaves and my heart began to kvell as I
read them. Please let me share some of their stories with you.
“We planted a lemon tree in our yard. The fruit will be made into
lemonade, which we will sell. The money will be sent to a fund to support
families injured by terror in Israel. I’m also donating some of my
birthday gifts to JAFCO.”
“I helped change my sister’s diapers and I sing to her when she cries.”
“We helped hurricane victims.”
“Sometimes the playground balls get thrown over the fence and stuck
behind the bushes. Mom and I get them out and put them back in the
playground every day.”
“The mitzvah that our family did was giving tzedakah.”
“I helped to catch a bunny rabbit.”
“I take good care of my cat, Sophi. I played with my toys with her and
give her special treats.”
“I helped my grandmother all day. I carried her purse for her and told
her that I was doing a mitzvah. Later I helped her sort out her newspapers
and while visiting with her I helped my grandmother cook dinner.
I told my mom all about my mitzvah helping grandma and she
was very proud. “
“My family and I participate in races. The money raised goes to good
causes and we get to exercise together!”
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS
Sabrina Mueller, Director
Shalom Lekulam, Everybody
It has been an incredible month at the Religious School!! We
are working in two knowledge areas: 1) Jewish Identity, Customs
and Values 2) Hebrew Language and Prayer Skills.
Hands on activities are the main ingredient to make the learning
fun and participative.
We chose Shabbat as the unit to learn and experience during
January. We baked challah while learn the meaning of this Jewish
bread; we made candleholders, and sent these items home with the
hope our families will use them and light every home on Fridays.
We had a one-day workshop of Challah called Let’s Challabrate in
which we invited the mothers to have a special feminine moment
while baking challah.
Students from Vav and Zayn (sixth and seven graders) started
their preparation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. We’re very happy to
offer this new program every Tuesday. Students join the Mincha
Service as a part of their Jewish heritage and study with the Kantor
Torah, Haftarah chanting and Hebrew reading.
We are working on our Tu B’shevat Seder. We will dance and
It is very important that children feel the connection between
the Religious School and home. We’re sending home every Friday
a newsletter with all we’ve done that week and upcoming activities.
Education is a partnership between school, parents and students.
We are willing to make the school a supportive and inviting Jewish
community.
Beyond all of the differences that stand between us, we are all
the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We are all one family,
with one land, and one destiny... This is the Mitzvah of Ahavat Israel.
Shalom Chaverim!
I can’t believe its spring already! Time truly flies.
We’ve had some wonderful Events in the last two Months.
Over winter break our own Sydney Gorodetsky spent a week in
Washington D.C. representing our community at USY’s annual
International Convention. Her experience was described as greatly
enjoyable and rewarding.
Yom Disney was amazing. Our kids from both USY and
Kadima shined while having a blast.
The Sinai Scooby’s have some incredible events coming up in
the next two months. Look forward to the 20th of March, where
our youth group and Ramah Darom Families take over Friday
night services, followed by the oh so traditional Chinese Shabbat
Dinner in the dining hall.
terest and discussion.
One of the most important mitzvoth of Pesach is “V’Higadita
L’Vincha,” of teaching and transmitting our rich and ancient heritage
to our children. By investing a small amount of preparation
and planning you can help foster the creation of eternal experiences
and memories that will not only live in the hearts of your
children, but will transmitted by them to future generations of children
and their children’s children.
Best wishes for a “Zissen (sweet) Pesach”, to all the members of
the Temple Sinai Family and their dear ones.
SHARE-A-MEAL PROGRAM
Since the December Share-a-Meal morning occurred just before
the Jan-Feb Bulletin went to press, we are combining that
date with the recent February meal preparation. Thank you to
Mark and Lois Nonkin, Micha and Eva Fireman with son Micha,
Michael Stern, Ruth Heimsohen, Fred Hochsztein with AJ and
Jocelyn, Linda Levine, Diane and David Snyder, Audrey Branse,
Paula and Steve Platt, Sam Monchek, Ruth Ann Valdman with
Edon, Sarah and Adam, Steven and Eileen Samilow with Jared
and Matthew, Marjut Herzog and Judy and Larry Wiener. These
names were taken from the sign in sheet. We thank Entenmann’s
Thrift Bakery for continuing to supply us with dessert and the
Melines for their continuous donation of toothpaste and
toothbrushes. Everyone pitched in to help make the brown bag
lunches and toiletry bags that we then served to many very needy
individuals one hour later in the Broward Outreach Center’s
cafeteria.
Our February 15th date was very similar. But we want to thank
Steve Platt, Don Levine and Andy Wiener for taking charge of
this February making and serving date while we were out of town.
The report from our son is that it went very well and they had
much help preparing and serving the meal. Good feeling that we
can go away and know that everything will run smoothly. Thanks
crew!
Next Share-a-Meal Date: Sunday, April 19th, 11:30
in Cafeteria
Bring hard boiled eggs in shells in carton and toiletries.
There was a time when Sarah’s chicken soup
was the highlight of every Passover Seder.
This year, Sarah cannot afford the ingredients
to make a pot of soup.
The Passover Haggadah teaches, “Let all who
are hungry enter and eat.” With your support, MAZON
will honor this tradition by helping people like Sarah.
The Mishnah claims there is more than one Jewish New Year. According to Seder Moed,
Tractate Rosh Hashanah, the four New Years are:
On the first of Nisan (circa April), the new year for the kings and for the festivals;
On the first of Elul (circa August), the new year for the tithing of animals;
On the first of Tishrei (circa October), the new year for years…and for the planting.
On the fifteenth of Shvat (circa February), the new year for trees according to the House of Hillel
The Temple Sinai Green Team seems to be in harmony with this cycle. The Green Team was borne
from a conversation at one of Judy Wiener’s summer pool parties (around the first of Elul). We announced
the changing of light bulbs in the sanctuary and social hall to compact fluorescents
on Rosh Hashana (first of Tishrei). Our efforts continue with a new paper recycling program,
our first green fundraiser, and the planting of a Biblical Garden at the temple on Tu B’Shvat (the
fifteenth of Shevat).
To be successful, the paper recycling program needs community participation. The more often we fill the new bin, the more money we
raise for Temple Sinai; if we do not fill the bin often enough, the company turning our waste into newspapers cannot afford to service us.
To that end, we hope to fill our paper recycling bin twice by the first of Nisan (April first) to complete a cycle of New Years and new
beginnings as a “green” temple. We urge each of you to take the paper pledge! If just 100 families commit to bring their paper waste to
Temple Sinai, together we will generate 4,000 pounds of paper per month! This paper gets recycled and Temple Sinai receives $$$!
All these projects highlight the Green Team’s commitment to “green” Temple Sinai, help members experience Judaism’s ancient connection
to the environment, and build a sustainable community together.
Karaoke at Temple Sinai of Hollywood
Saturday Night, March 7th 2009 at 7:30pm
KARAOKE (a mixture of Japanese kara, "empty," and okesutora, "orchestra") pronounced ka-ra-oakie/; is a form of entertainment
in which amateur singers sing along with recorded music (and/or a music video) using a microphone and public address system.
The music is typically a well-known pop song which has no lead vocal. Lyrics are usually displayed on a video screen, along with a
moving symbol or changing color and/or music video images, to guide the singer. In some countries, a karaoke music video with
lyrics and the option to disable the original voice track is called a KTV. Some people incorrectly spell it "kareoke". (source
Wikipedia).
So, the questions are:
1. Was the above definition important to you?
2. If it was or it wasn’t, would you like to try karaoke?
3. If you have already tried karaoke, would you like to try it again?
4. Would you like to hear your friends and family give karaoke a try?
If any of the answers to the above questions were “YES”, then you need to join us for the first ever
Temple Sinai Karaoke Night on Saturday March 7th 2009 at 7:30pm.
The family of Dr. Joe Stein extends sincere gratitude to
Temple Sinai for the love and support given to us at this most
love. His wishes were that any donations in his memory be
made to Temple Sinai Hazak or Jewish National Fund.
Entrance is free, and there will be refreshments available for a small charge.
Ear plugs will be available for a large charge and all proceeds will go to research for curing tone deaf singers.
We look forward to a great night of music, fun and laughter.
So, regardless of how you spell it, Karaoke is coming to Temple Sinai on Saturday March 7th 2009 at 7:30pm.
