Solid State Overview
Solid State Drives (SSDs) are comprised of large quantities of flash chips rather than motors and platters like
standard hard disc drives (HDDs). There are no moving parts in SSDs, hence they are much more reliable. Data
moves from the flash to the attached drive controller and then to the host system. The lack of moving parts
improves the performance of the drive by increasing speed and reliability and decreasing size and power
consumption.
Reliability
Rugged, durable and more stable than traditional magnetic HDDs, Delkin’s SSDs are made with non-volatile NAND
flash. These drives have no mechanical failure points and therefore have a higher tolerance to shock/vibration,
temperature, and altitude.
Speed
Solid state technology eliminates seek time and rotational latency as the drive does not have to spin up to run.
Users can increase efficiency by storing and booting operating systems and other applications directly from the SSD
instead of a traditional HDD.
Power Consumption
Because SSDs have no mechanical parts to draw power, they use much less energy than traditional HDDs and even
hybrid drives. For the mobile user, an SSD is the ideal storage solution.

Archival Gold ® CD-R: The 300 Year Disc
Standard recordable CD media is prone to data loss and corrosion in as little as six
months to five years on average. Archival Gold ® CD-R media eliminates disc
degradation by utilizing corrosion-resistant materials in the layer of the disc that
stores digital information. A patented Phthalocyanine phase-changing dye layer is
applied instead of azo or cyanine dye, and the silver reflective layer is replaced
with a stable 24 karat gold layer. To protect the media from data loss due to
surface damage, ScratchArmor ® protective coating is applied in the final stage of
manufacturing, making each disc over ten times more resistant to physical damage.
The result is a disc that effectively resists corrosion and other environmental degradation for over 300 years.
Archival Gold ® DVD-R: The 100 Year Disc
The design of a recordable DVD is much like two CDs glued together, with the data
layer in the center of the disc. Because adhesive is used to bond these two halves,
DVDs are extremely susceptible to changes in heat and humidity, as well as to
corrosive gases in the environment that can “leak” through the porous adhesive
layer. To combat common DVD-R data loss, Archival Gold ® DVD-Rs utilize a 24
karat gold inert reflective layer that cannot be penetrated (or corroded) by these
environmental effects. For added protection, an extra sealant layer is added in
between the gold and adhesive layers and applied to the sides of the disc, and a
ScratchArmor ® protective coating is applied to the surface to protect the disc from
physical damage. The result is a disc that effectively resists corrosion and other
environmental degradation for over 100 years.
Archival Gold ® Blu-ray: The 200 Year Disc
The Blu-ray disc is the next generation in optical media storage. It is manufactured
in a similar fashion as recordable CD media, but communicates with disc drives via
a blue laser (hence the name “Blu-ray”) to read and write data. This blue laser is
able to focus at precise points on the disc, which enables more data to be written
in the same amount of space. Archival Gold ® recordable Blu-ray media uses a
patented “enhanced” version of ScratchArmor ® protective coating to completely
seal the disc on all sides, thus preventing corrosive forces from effecting disc
usability or lifetime. The combination of this enhanced sealant and Delkin’s
advanced manufacturing standards results in a disc that effectively resists corrosion
and other environmental degradation for over 200 years.

1. Which photographers have influenced your
work?
John Shaw, Rod Planck, and Jim Brandenburg
among others. Early on I noted the pure
backgrounds featured in John’s flower images
and Rod’s bird images and tried to emulate
them while creating an even tighter, more
graphic style for myself. Jim’s use of light and his intentionally
blurred images have inspired me as well.
2. Any advice for someone thinking about starting a career in
photography?
Know your subjects, photograph only what you love, make images that please you, learn to create markets for your work, diversify
your approach to the business, and more importantly, work hard for at least 12 hours seven days a week.

The longevity of an optical disc can be affected by numerous factors, including manufacturing techniques,
materials used in disc construction, integrity of the recording, physical handling as well as environmental
factors and storage conditions that cause deterioration.
Across the optical media industry, products are tested for longevity with a standard set of testing criteria. This
standard requires multiple lots of discs to be subjected to increased levels of heat and humidity in an

with the NAPP in 2006. He is actively involved in educating and consulting corporations, studios and
agencies in the applications of digital imaging workflow, color management, pre-press and digital

1. Which photographers have influenced your work?
Would have to start with Ansel Adams… even though I do commercial/portrait type of work… his
profound level of quality as far back as 1923 has yet to be surpassed… He also made a profound
statement in 1971 that confirmed something I believed and will last my entire life because I was
already doing this when I heard him say: “Half the image is created in the camera, and the other half
is created in the dark room.” Needless to say, the likes of Photoshop are now my darkroom. Being able
to perfect tone and color after capture is critical in today’s workflow.
2. If you could be in any other
profession, what would you like
to be?
I would love to be a Helicopter
pilot… silly isn’t it seeing how
Martin (Delkin’s CEO/President)
always teases me about helicopters…
but that would be my
profession if photography was
not.
Actually, before photography I
was a musician (drummer) and
played at Six Flags and for the
grand opening of Disney World
in Orlando in the early 70’s. I
may have gone down that path
but I did become a band photographer,

Kansas back in 1980, and had
many other music clients when I
started my photography business
