“Employees Extraordinaire”
Corrine McMahon and Janet Sherlin raise the bar for others when it comes to dedication and
“stick to it-ness.” They have both worked at the Hendricks Community Hospital for over 35
years. Both admitted that they did not intend to make it a career when they first started, but
after working there now, neither has any retirement date in the near future.
Corrine McMahon
Corrine started at the hospital as a candy striper and
then was given the opportunity to work as a nurse aide.
She worked in the facility
as a nurse aide for about 10
years and then moved into
housekeeping. Corrine has
been the housekeeping supervisor
for over 20 years.
She supervises a staff of
nine people who handle the
housekeeping duties for the
entire complex, 24 hours per
day, seven days per week.
Corrine spends most of her
days too doing the hands-on
part of housekeeping. She is
thankful for her staff of dedicated
workers. “We have a
very low turn-over rate in my
department,” she said, “and we are very proud of that.”
“Keeping the carpets clean is our most difficult
task,” she admitted. “Our equipment today is so
much easier to operate than it used to be,” she added.
Corrine graduated from Hendricks High School
and she and her husband, Kenneth, have lived in
the community all of their lives. She and Kenneth
have been married for 31 years. “We just got to be
grandparents two months ago,” she quickly said.
There have been many changes in the medical field,
according to Corrine. We all get to meet lots of very nice
people. The patients come and go much quicker these days.
Our Mission
Hendricks Community Hospital
Associates strives to provide the highest
quality health and residential care in
a Christian caring environment.
Janet Sherlin
Can you imagine facing 1,200 to 1,400 pounds of
laundry? Janet does that every day with her job as laundry
supervisor. She and her staff of six people work
eight hours per day and six days per week. She started
working in the kitchen and laundry for four years and
then moved strictly to the laundry. She handles all the
hiring for her department, but indicated the department
has very low turnover. She said she is very fortunate
to have a great group of people in her department.
Janet has worked as supervisor in the laundry
for 18 years. The lady who she replaced as
supervisor is now living in the nursing home.
Janet is married to Louis and they make their home
in Canby where he is a county commissioner and an
insurance and
real estate agent.
She has three
stepdaughters.
Janet and Louis
also have four
granddaughters
and two grandsons
who all
live in the Twin
City area. Janet
added that
she graduated from Hendricks High School, but
moved to Canby when she and Louis married.
“The paperwork is the most difficult part of my
job,” she said in conclusion, “and the best part of my
job is the great group of people I work with everyday.”
Our Vision
This “Ol’ Place”
Hendricks Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop
This “Ol’ Place” is a thriving business on the Main
Street of Hendricks. It is a thrift shop, starting 14 years
ago in the upstairs of the old hospital building. The store
is now housed in the former Digre Plumbing & Heating
building, donated by an anonymous donor. Items
are received daily from Hendricks community members,
as well as folks from surrounding communities.
These items are greatly appreciated. Sale of donated items
makes it possible to raise thousands of dollars for auxiliary
projects of equipment purchased for the hospital and nursing
home. Equipment recently purchased includes a nursing home
tub, ambulance cart and activity equipment. The auxiliary has
purchased numerous items for the facility through the years, as
well as funding the remodeling of the outpatient service area.
New and used clothing, furniture, dishes, radios, toys, pictures,
games, linens, knick-knacks, household items and “you
name it” are available for sale – sometimes even at half price.
This “Ol’ Place” has been called the “Fredricks of Hendricks”
or the “Hendricks Shopping Mall”. Others say, “If you
can’t find it at the Thrift Shop, you don’t need it.” It is staffed
by over 20 faithful volunteers. You can find hundreds of rea-
ized care. Delivered on a one-to-one
basis, services are tailored to meet the
individual needs of every patient and
family unit. Services are offered up to
7 days/week inclusive of on-call nursing
services. The staff work closely
with your physician and work as needed
with other community agencies and
services that compliment care in the
home. In the event an indicidual is in
need of 24 hour care beyond the scope
of Home Care or Hospice, arrangements
for a smooth transition to an alternative
level of care is done.
Doctors, nurses, therapists, social
workers, aides, volunteers and other
providers are committed to improving
the lives of others by delivering personalized
care and attention in the comfort
of an individual’s home. A free in home
assessment is available to assist in formulating
a plan. If you or someone you
know is in need of assistance, please
Hospice staff at 507-275-3134.
Fourth Annual Tour of Tables
Good Shepherd Hospice’s fourth annual Tour of Tables fundraiser was, in
spite of the weather, beautiful and inspiring. It served to remind all of us what
a great, supportive area we live in. The volunteers and staff would like to thank
all the individuals and sponsors in our local communities for helping make
this event such an on-going success. This year, with the money we raised,
Good Shepherd Hospice will move forward with purchasing a Hoyer lift, acquiring
new furnishings for the hospice room and expanding our hospice library
resources.
Good Shepherd Hospice is also pleased to announce we will be hosting
the 15th annual Hospice Foundation of America’s Living With Grief Series:
Children and Adolescents. This two-hour educational event will be held later
on this summer at the Hendricks Community Hospital. This in-service will be
open to the public. More information will be made available toward the end
of July.
Hospice care is considered to be the model for high-quality care at the end
of life. Hospice involves a team-oriented approach to care that includes expert
medical attention, pain-and-symptom management, emotional and spiritual
support. The quality of a person’s life is emphasized, not the duration. Moreover,
services and support are provided to family caregivers, in addition to the
patient.
Hospice volunteers play a key role in hospice’s high-quality care at end of
life. Good Shepherd Hospice has a strong core group of dedicated volunteers.
If you would like to become a hospice volunteer and join this great team of
individuals, or if you have questions about the volunteer program, please call
Gwen Meyer, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator at 275-2210.
Disaster Planning
The Hendricks Community Hospital
actively participates in disaster
planning. The Southwest Emergency
Preparedness Team (SWEPT) meets
monthly at Avera Marshall Hospital in
Marshall, MN. Beginning this year Dr.
Todd McCluskey of Hendricks Clinic,
P.A. took on the role of Medical Director
for the southwest region. Rosemary
Christianson and Jeff Moen of the
Hendricks Hospital attend the monthly
SWEPT meetings. There are sixteen
counties that are included in the southwest
region. SWEPT represents twentythree
hospitals, forty three primary care
clinics, fifty four EMS groups and two
tribal governments.
SWEPT receives funding and guidance
from the Minnesota Department of
Health. SWEPT works with members to
coordinate purchases of equipment and
supplies to meet the Minnesota Department
of Health benchmarks for emergency
preparedness. It is important for
our facility to participate regularly in
the monthly meetings to enhance planning
and participation in drills for emergency
preparedness.
Some of the equipment that the Hendricks
Hospital has been able to secure
through the SWEPT grant includes a
HAM radio to enhance communication,
specialized suits with respirator equipment
for chemical disasters and extra
portable beds for a surge of patients
in time of disaster, just to name a few
things.
During the month of May Jeff and
Rosemary have participated in education
put on by SWEPT. Minnesota Responds
was a two-day conference educating
SWEPT members on emergency
preparedness. A tabletop exercise was
held at Jackpot Junction. The scenario
at the tabletop was that a tornado had hit
your community and participants had to
work through the phases of the disaster.
Equipment
Ivanhoe Medical Center and the
White Clinic. The testing equipment
gives physicians quicker
access to patient lab results. This
on-campus equipment allows
physicians the ability to diagnose
patient conditions sooner.
Blood tests can help diagnose
heart attacks, congestive heart
failure, blood clots, organ diseases
and many other illnesses.
The lab is staffed by Joyce
Grong, Ann Nuese and Amy Otten.
Lab Manger, Joyce Grong
stated, “The new updated equipment
in the lab has been a giant
step forward for the department,
physicians and patients.”
Infection Control:
Learning about MRSA
What is it? Staphylococcus Aureus or
“staph” bacteria commonly live on the
skin and in the nose. Usually, staph bacteria
don’t cause any harm. However, if
they get inside the body they can cause
an infection. When common antibiotics
don’t kill the staph bacteria, it means
the staph is called MRSA (Methicillin
Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).
Anyone can get MRSA. You can get
MRSA by touching someone or something
that has the bacteria on it and then
touching your skin or your nose. You
may increase your chances of getter
MRSA if:
•You take antibiotics a lot.
• You take antibiotics without a prescription.
• You don’t follow your doctor’s directions
when taking antibiotics (for
example you stop taking your antibiotics
before finishing a prescription or
you skip doses)
• You frequently get cuts or scrapes
on your skin.
There are two ways you can have
MRSA
• You have an active infection. An
active infection means you have symptoms.
This is usually a boil, a sore, or
an infected cut that is red, swollen, or
pus-filled.
• You can be a carrier. If you are a
carrier you do not have symptoms that
you can see, but you still have MRSA
bacteria living in your nose or on your
Immunization for Shingles
What causes shingles? The same virus,
the varicella zoster virus (VZV),
causes both chickenpox and shingles.
After a person has had chicken pox,
the virus rests in the body’s nerves permanently.
Approximately 30% of all
people who have been infected with
chicken pox will later develop herpes
zoster, commonly known as zoster or
shingles.
Herpes zoster or shingles occurs
when latent VZV reactivates and
causes recurrent disease. It is not well
understood why this happens in some
people and not others. The risk of getting
shingles increases as a person gets
older. People who have medical conditions
that keep the immune system
from working properly or people who
receive immunosuppressive drugs are
also at greater risk to get shingles.
Shingles usually start as a rash with
blisters that scab after 3 to 5 days. The
most frequently mentioned symptom is
The White Family Practice Clinic is a satellite clinic of the
Hendricks Community Hospital that opened in July of 1996.
The clinic is located in the south wing of the White Health
Care Center at 302 E. 5th Street, White, SD.
The clinic is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Services
provided by the clinic focus on prevention and wellness.
Patients are seen for well child and adult exams, athletic
Cindy Troelstrup and Jo Gibson CFNP
pain. The rash and pain usually occur
in a band on one side of the body, or on
one side of the face. The rash usually
clears within 2 to 4 weeks.
Before the rash develops, there is
often pain, itching, or tingling in the
area where the rash will develop. Other
symptoms of shingles can include fever,
headache, chills and upset stomach.
Very rarely, shingles can lead to
pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness,
scarring, brain inflammation, or
death.
For about one person in five, severe
pain can continue even after the rash
clears up a situation called post-herpetic
neuralgia (PHN). As people get older,
they are more likely to develop PHN,
and it is more likely to be more severe
and long lasting. The pain may be sharp
or throbbing, and it may extend beyond
the area of the original rash. The skin
may be unusually sensitive to touch and
to changes in temperature. PHN can last
for months, or even years.
Several antiviral medications can be
used to treat shingles. These medications
should be started as soon as possible
after the rash appears. They can
help shorten the length and severity of
the episode. Pain medicine may also
help with pain caused by shingles.
A single dose of zoster vaccine is
recommended for adults age 60 years
and older whether or not they report a
prior episode of herpes zoster. In clinical
Activities Play a Key Role for Residents
Hendricks Community Hospital Nursing Home focuses on individualized
care planning to meet the goals and desires of its residents.
The Nursing Home Activity
Department plays
a key role in this process.
The resident and his or her
family are encouraged to
participate in as many activities
as they would like.
We have an excellent staff
that works to provide a wide
range of activities that appeal
to a variety of interests.
Last month HCHA Nursing
Home honored mothers with a
Mother’s Day Tea held on May
10th. Janelle and Katie Milton
provided entertainment for
the event. On June 13 a supper
was served at 5:00 p.m. to
celebrate Father’s Day. June is
dairy month so residents have
enjoyed dairy products in a
cheese tasting party, malts and
rocky road ice cream cones.
To kick off the 4th of July
celebrations the residents will
be having a fireworks display
on July 3rd. The public
is welcome to come and join
in the fun. The Resident Family
Picnic will be held on July
26th with a day under the Big
Top. This circus theme will
include; balloon twisting,
cotton candy and, of course,
lots of good summertime
fun. This is a very popular
event, with over two hundred
people anticipated. Invitations
will be sent out to
families in the near future.
The Coffee Shop, located
in the east wing
of the nursing home, is
staffed Mondays and
Thursdays from 2:00
p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The
residents have chosen
to use funds raised at
the Coffee Shop to
Page 10 • Summer 2008 • HCHA Horizons
purchase items for the quarterly
auction event. So please
stop by the Coffee Shop and
enjoy coffee and cookies
and support our residents!
Back by popular demand,
residents will again enjoy casino
outings and supper parties.
The supper getaways are
resident choice. Our most recent
outing was to the Ridge
in Lake Benton. We continue
to look forward to many more
dining adventures in local
communities. Other annual
summer events also coming
up are; Lake Benton Opera
House’s summer musical,
“High School Musical”
and County Fair Day, where
we encourage residents and
community members to take
part in our own version of
a County Fair. Please come
to the Hendricks Nursing
Home and join in the fun!
Residents, with the help
of Nursing Home staff, have
made a beautiful quilt. Tickets
for this quilt will go on sale
July 1st. The proceeds of the
ticket sales will go towards
the purchase of a Kitchen Aide
mixer to be used in the activity
kitchen. The quilt will be
on display in the nursing home
dining room. Tickets may be
purchased at the business office
or in the Activity Department.
They are 50 cents apiece
or 3 tickets for a dollar. The
more tickets you buy the better
your chances of winning!
The drawing will be held September
2nd, just in time for the
winner to enjoy this quilt with
cooler weather on the way.
Awnings in Place on the Patio
How does your garden grow?
This will be a question nursing
home residents will be able to answer
thanks to a generous donation
from the hospital auxiliary. With
the donation the nursing home was
able to purchase awnings for the
patio area outside the nursing home
dining room. These awnings
allow residents
to sit in the coolness of
the shade provided and
enjoy the flower and
vegetable gardens they
helped to plant. The awnings
can be raised and
lowered with a touch of
a button for the ease of
anyone wanting to enjoy
the outdoors, see the
flowers blooming and
note the progress of the vegetables
growing in the garden. Since the
awnings have been installed there
has been a dramatic increase in the
utilization of the patio and garden
area. We want to again thank the
Hospital Auxiliary for their generous
donation.
Stella Schwartz Molumby attended country school through
the eighth grade and then graduated from Canby High School
in 1934. Stella married her future husband, Ray Molumby,
on June 10, 1941. Stella and
Ray moved to the Twin Cities,
where Ray worked for
the railroad and Stella, for
28 years, worked for Sears
in their mail order adjustment
department. She dealt
with people’s complaints.
Obviously Stella enjoyed
solving problems! Stella
and Ray had three children,
Jack Molumby, Mary
Molumby, and Kathy Pilgrim. For entertainment Stella and
Ray loved to dance. They also did some traveling. Stella was
a member of the YMCA and was active in a card club. Stella
continued to live in the Twin Cities until she moved to the
Hendricks Nursing Home on February 11, 2008.
At the Hendricks Nursing Home Stella enjoys reading
and loves to go “out to the farm” with her daughters on the
weekend. She loves to talk about her 14 grandchildren and
3 great-grandchildren. Staff notes that Stella is great to be
around, she enjoys reading the newspaper and then discussing
current events with them. Staff also enjoy visiting with
her about her weekends with her daughters on the farm.
Stella Schwartz Muolumby Walter Popowski
Walter Popowski was and always will be a farmer at
heart. He farmed with his dad when he was just a young
boy and talks about the
“Dirty Thirties” and
how nothing grew but
the tumbleweeds. Walter
farmed with horses
for many years and
he also milked cows
for thirty-seven years.
Walter married Lillian
“Marge” Lichtsinn on
February 11, 1949.
They continued to live,
work and raise their
three children, John, Linda, and Dawn on the farm near
Wilno.
Walter liked to go to dances when he was younger. He
also enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping near his home.
Walter entered the Hendricks Nursing Home on July 9,
2007. His hobbies here include playing CARDS; almost
any day of the week will find him and several others playing
Whist. Staff and his fellow residents agree that he is a
wonderful addition to the nursing home community.
Resident Profile
Lillian Thompson
Lillian Thompson exemplifies what Lincoln
Lane Villa, HCHA’s congregate housing, is all
about. The different levels of care available on
our campus encourage individuals to take part in
setting up their own plan of care with as few or as
many services as they need; this allows the client
the potential to meet or exceed their own goals.
Lillian Leuning Thompson graduated from
Hendricks High School and then went on to three
years of Nursing School. Following her education,
Lillian got a job at the Hendricks Hospital, where
she met her future husband Dr. Carl Thompson. Dr.
Thompson and Lillian lived, worked, and raised
their two sons Brad and David in this community.
Lillian played an important role in starting the hospital
auxiliary program that is still active today. She
was also instrumental, along with the Red Cross,
in starting the Candy Stripers Program in the Hendricks
Hospital. After forty years of working in
Hendricks, Lillian and Dr. Thompson retired to Bella
Vista AR. Lillian and her husband moved back to
Hendricks in 2003.
Since moving back to Hendricks, Lillian has utilized
many of the services that HCHA offers. She
has received Home Care and takes advantage of
the HomMed monitoring system available to Lincoln
Lane Villa tenants. The monitor collects and
transmits daily measurements such as heart rate,
blood pressure, weight, and temperature with other
optional measurements available. Each day, the
monitor talks Lillian through the data collection
process. It then automatically transmits this data
over a telephone line to the Central Station in the
Home Care department where a skilled nurse can
Page 12 • Summer 2008 • HCHA Horizons
Lillian Thompson
review the information and respond appropriately. This
proactive approach allows Lillian and her physician to
be more pre-emptive in her care, allowing for adjustments
to her treatment plan or to make changes in her
medications.
There have been a few set backs where Lillian has
needed hospital care. And, for a short period of time,
Lillian elected the nursing
home for rehabilitation.
While in the nursing home
Lillian received Physical
and Occupation Therapies.
When she had achieved her
goals, Lillian was able to
return to her home at Lincoln
Lane Villa and has resumed
her daily activities,
including her ongoing role
with the hospital auxiliary.

currently employed or accepting employment
with the Hendricks Community Hospital Association
and/or Hendricks Clinic with an outstanding educational
loan(s) from expenses related to the completion
of a medical related program. By establishing this
program the intention is to help improve the health of
rural communities and ensure that top-quality medical
care continues. The first step toward ensuring this
is to have adequate well-trained staff of healthcare
professionals. Additional donations towards this fund
may be made to the Hendricks Memorial Healthcare
Both of these donations were made possible by the
generous contributions of Henry & Burmie Lindahl
connected their patients with
dermatologists, nephrologists,
pulmonolgists and wound-care
