LA QUINTA ARTS FOUNDATION
ANNUAL REVIEW
2009- 2010
La Quinta Arts Foundation (LQAF) entered the
2009/10 Season with the pragmatic strategy
to “accomplish more with less.” With no
guarantee that the economic recession would
ease, LQAF evaluated each outreach program
on effectiveness and efficiency to serve LQAF’s
mission of Promoting and Cultivating the Arts.
We prepared a zero-based budget scrutinizing
all cost centers, bid and renegotiated contracts
and worked to optimize collaborations and partnerships. These efforts
resulted in a successful season of well received programs reaching over
38,000 constituents.
Besides upgrading entertainment and other amenities at La Quinta Arts
Festival, a seventh show was added to Art Under the Umbrellas, and the
third annual La Quinta Blues & Brews was relocated to La Quinta Civic
Center Campus. Two unique local interest exhibits with a host of related
education programs were presented at La Quinta Museum and met with
rave reviews. LQAF’s commitment to the elementary school docent art
program continued at historical levels, with LQAF’s college scholarship
cumulative awards approaching $900,000 since the program was
instituted in 1984.
Strong interest and support from members of the community,
volunteers, sponsors, artists, local business, civic and charitable
organizations, and the City of La Quinta resulted in unprecedented
positive awareness and appreciation for the contributions La Quinta
Arts Foundation brings to our community. I am grateful for the
continued confidence of the public and proud to submit the
La Quinta Arts Foundation Annual Review 2009/10.
This mission is accomplished by producing nationally
acclaimed visual and performing ar t events, forming
meaningful community par tnerships, and providing
cultural, education and personal growth outreach
oppor tunities to students, ar tists, residents and
visitors to La Quinta and beyond.
28 th La Quinta Arts Festival – March 11-14, 2010
Art in Public Places
To join the 27 sculptures and 9 paintings procured over the
years, the 2010 City of La Quinta Civic Purchase selection
committee chose a kinetic sculpture, two paintings, and a
large photograph of scenic Box Canyon – all to be placed in
the La Quinta Library.
It is our ongoing goal to continue to communicate La Quinta
Arts Festival as a viable Art in Public Places resource to cities
and developers— including incorporating an artist registry
on LQAF.com.
Featured Artist Kristin DeSantis
Contemporary metal and mixed
media artist Kristin DeSantis from
Allenspark, Colorado provided the
vibrant images featured on the La
Quinta Arts Festival 2010 poster,
marketing collateral and
commemorative t-shirts. Her
whimsical poster image became the
inspiration for the Festival’s theme,
“Flying High Above the Rest.”
Awards Reception
Well over 500 guests attended Festival 2010’s opening night
reception hosted by LQAF board and staff members on
the Civic Center Amphitheatre lawn from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
Along with the Festival Artists, special invitees to the Awards
This series expanded from six to
seven shows during 2009/10:
October 10, November 7, December
Seen as “the place to be” by
attendees and artists alike, the reputation and popularity
of Art Under the Umbrellas took another gigantic leap
in 2009/10. With each show presenting 60-80 exhibiting
artists, live music and art demonstrations, at least
25,000 attendees came out to experience these free
public events along the closed off streets of Old Town La
Quinta. Over 150 artists were provided the opportunity
to exhibit at the Saturday events, each show with long
wait lists and dozens more turned away due to lack of
space.
La Quinta Blues & Brews
November 21
The third annual event was renamed
fare prepared and sold by Bristol Farms. An admission
fee of $20.00 was charged at the gate. Tickets purchased
online were discounted to $15, as were those with a
direct mail card in hand which was sent to all
households in La Quinta. Each admission ticket
included $5 in beverage tickets. Paid attendance
totaled 1,112 -- 300 of which were online purchases.
