Welcome to

SHA Athletics

Dear prospective Student Athletes,

Sacred heart Academy’s athletic program, earning more than 70 state athletic championships, has

a long and glorious tradition of excellence and achievement in girls’ high school sports. ShA is

proud to offer students the opportunity to participate in high school athletics and to be a part of

the school’s heritage.

more than 60 percent of ShA students participate in 16 sports. they include basketball, bowling,

cheerleading (2012-13), cross country, fishing, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis,

track & field and volleyball, which are sanctioned by the Kentucky high School Athletics Association

(KhSAA), and dance, field hockey and lacrosse, which are club sports not sanctioned by KhSAA.

Sacred heart Academy’s on-campus athletic complex includes a gym,

weight and training rooms, five tennis courts, three fields for field

hockey, lacrosse, soccer and softball, a regulation, rubberized track

and field houses.

intramural sports, including volleyball, flag football and basketball,

are popular with students who do not wish to play competitively.


Sacred heart Academy is located on the ursuline campus at 3175

lexington road. Students come from many areas of louisville,

What is a Valkyrie?

Sacred heart Academy’s mascot is the Valkyrie – a norse

mythological woman who carried the bodies of brave deceased

warriors to Valhalla (heaven). At ShA, we consider a Valkyrie to be a

strong woman of great faith.


Description of

SHA Athletics

Head Coach: Donna Moir •

the rich tradition of Sacred heart Academy basketball boasts four state championships, including

the 3-peat of 2002, 2003, and 2004; five 7 regional championships; and seven louisville

invitational tournament championships. the program has produced 11 All-State players and

two miss Basketballs. ShA’s basketball program includes freshman, junior varsity, and varsity

the Sacred heart Academy bowling team is one of the top programs in Kentucky. in

2006, the team won the first ever Bowling championship for ShA. the 2011-2012

season was the bowling team’s first as a KhSAA sanctioned sport. the bowling

program has both junior varsity and varsity teams.

Head Coach: Jamie Hectus •

the Sacred heart Academy cheerleading squad has garnered several regional, state

and national awards in the past years. in 2010, ShA received its first bid to the

national high School cheerleading championship at Disney World. the team also

won the WSf Varsity 2 level national championship in indianapolis in 2006 and was

crowned ASc national champions in both 2002 and 2003. in 2003, the squad was

named Kentucky State cheer and Dance champions and Kentucky State cheer and

Dance Grand champions. cheerleading will become a sanctioned sport for the 2012-

2013 school year. cheerleading is a year-round sport and fields a varsity squad only.

Cross Country

Head Coach: Rick Heim •

the Sacred heart Academy cross country team is one of Kentucky’s elite

programs with six State titles including 2009 and the 3-peat of 2002, 2003

and 2004 and 13 regional championships. ShA runners have captured six

individual state titles to date. in 2009, head coach rick heim, was named

Kentucky high School cross country coach of the Year and was inducted

in the Kentucky coaches hall of fame. heim also was inducted into the

Valkyrie hall of fame in 2011. the cross country program has produced the

miss cross county’s and the Gatorade runner of the Year from 2008-2011.

cross country is a no cut sport and fields both a junior varsity and varsity team.

Field Hockey


Head Coach: Liz Lewis •

the Sacred heart Academy field hockey program is the best the state has

to offer with seven State championships including one in 2010 and a

3-peat in 2006, 2007 and 2008. the team has amassed 16 Sectional

championships and 16 Apple tournament championships. the program

has produced two miss field hockeys and has freshman, junior varsity,

and varsity teams.

the Sacred heart Academy golf team is among the most highly touted golf

programs in the state capturing six State, including 2011 State campions, and

18 regional titles. the golf program also has two individual State champions

and ShA’s first ever miss Golf in 2009. Golf has a varsity team only.


Head Coach: Brandon Davis •

the Sacred heart Academy lacrosse team is entering its 10th successful season

and is ShA’s fastest growing sport. the lacrosse varsity team was a state

finalist in 2010, and in 2011 State champions. the team also hosts the

Braveheart tournament, one of the largest women’s lacrosse events in the

midwest. the lacrosse program has junior varsity and varsity teams.

Head Coach: Brittany Barnett Enlow •

the Sacred heart Academy dance team is among the best in Kentucky, capturing the

2010 State Jazz champions title and State Grand champions banner in 2009. the

team travels annually to orlando to participate in the uDA nationals. in 2008, ShA

placed 8th in that competition and 9th in 2009. the team performs throughout the

year at ShA sporting events and also during half time at the St. Xavier/trinity football

game at papa John’s cardinal Stadium. Dance fields only one team.


Head Coach: Chris Moore •

the Sacred heart Academy soccer program has become one of the top programs in Kentucky

with four State championships, including the 3-peat of 2007, 2008, and 2009 and ten

regional championships. in addition, the program has produced three miss Soccers as well

as the 2009 Gatorade player of the year. head coach chris moore recently was honored

as Kentucky high School Soccer coach and national federation high School coach of the

Year in 2010. the soccer program fields junior varsity and varsity teams.


Swimming & Diving

Head Coach: Bob Wheatley •

the Sacred heart Academy softball team won the regional title in 2002 and has

produced numerous collegiate players over the past 20 years. the teams compete

among the state’s top programs at various tournaments. coach Wheatley and his

staff are dedicated to making the softball team even more competitive. Softball has

freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams.

the Sacred heart Academy swimming and diving team is among the

nation’s best programs having won 23 State (including 2011) and 25

regional championships. the wins rank Sacred heart 5th in the nation

for state titles, according to the national federation of State Diving

and Swimming Association. the program has produced many All State

swimmers and three ShA alums have gone on to swim in the olympics.

head coach Jim luebbe was also named the national federation

midwest Sectional coach of the Year in 2010. the swimming and diving program is

no cut sport and currently has over 100 participating student athletes.

the Sacred heart Academy tennis program is well known throughout the

state for its winning tradition that includes a total of 24 Singles and Doubles

State championships (including 2011), the most of any school in Kentucky.

the program also has won seven team championships, including back-to-back

titles in 2007 and 2008, and also sports a record 16 regional championships.

tennis fields both junior varsity and varsity teams.

Track & Field

Head Coach: Rick Heim •

the Sacred heart Academy track team is a no cut sport and fields only a varsity team.

the team competes in one of the toughest regions in the state and has won

the regional championship four times. in 2011, the track team won the State championship

and set many team and individual records. Sacred heart currently holds team

and individual records in the 4x800 meter run, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, and

the 3200 meter run. track and field is a no cut sport.

Pink & White

Flag Football Game

the annual pink and White flag football Game

is a testament to how the simplest dream can

surpass the loftiest expectation. in 2008, the

first pink and White game was played between

Sacred heart and Assumption high School. With

on-going support from the girls schools as well

as trinity and St. Xavier, the friendly rivalry has

become a much anticipated event uniting four

catholic communities for one worthy cause,

benefitting norton cancer institute Breast

health center.Sacred heart has won the past

two pink and White games.


Head Coach: Eric Garvey •

the Sacred heart Academy volleyball team is one of the state’s elite programs and

competes against the nation’s powerhouses throughout the season. the team won the

State title in 2003, and was state runner-up in 2008 and 2009. the volleyball team has

won 15 regional titles. the volleyball program is a cut sport and fields freshman, junior

varsity, and varsity teams.
