As member of Academic and Administrative Committee I have helped in the changeover
from annual to semester system in the school as also the introduction of credit system from
the year 2010. I redesigned the courses taught by me and also prepared syllabi for graduate
course in mass Communication, Diploma courses in Mass Communication and also
prepared the Model question papers for the same.
Theory:
I formulated and implemented a change in the nature and course structure of the paper
previously called as Newspaper Business Management. The subject of Newspaper Business
management was incomplete in the face of changing media scenario The new paper is called
Media Management, incorporating electronic media ( Television and radio) in the syllabus
along with newspapers. Emphasis on the globalisation of media has also been laid in the
syllabus in keeping with the need of the hour considering the vast expansion of media and
globalisation. The new paper, Media management is successfully being taught since session
2007. I had the privilege of designing not only the syllabus but the course of study,
pedagogy and practical exercises to suit the new course.
For MA II, topics of contemporary relevance such as citizen journalism, Computer Aided
Reporting, and Precision Journalism have been added. Optional papers in Online Journalism
and Investigative journalism have been offered. Students of Online Journalism have been
offered a mini internship with United Press International, an international news agency.
Practical:
For MA II the syllabus includes subjects like parliamentary reporting and development
reporting. In order for the students to get true understanding of the subjects mock
parliamentary session is organised in the department with the class being divided into ruling
party and opposition. The entire process of the parliament is followed right to the passing of
the bill. To orient the first year students, they are invited to attend the session as part of the
visitors’ gallery. The speaker is appointed after election from among the students.

For development reporting, the students are taken for a field visit to nearby rural area and
asked to submit their report.
The students bring out a monthly magazine as part of the internal assessment assignment.
The magazine which was introduced by me is a wholesome exercise where the students
learn the technique of not just writing and interpretive writing but also editing, editorial
writing, feature writing, page make up, design and team work.
Computer quizzes have been evolved whereby the knowledge can be tested in a paperless
test.
Present Areas of Interest
Presently I teach the following subjects to MA I &II
Reporting: This paper teaches the basics of news writing. To recognize the qualities that
distinguish news from other events, to be able to gather news from international, national,
regional and local sources, to be able to write the news report in order to effectively
communicate with the readers.
Media Management: In the era of multi-media conglomerates, this paper provides the
basic understanding of mass media as a business venture. The effective managing and
running of a news organisation that bring out the products called as the newspaper and

news on broadcast media in the marketplace of readers and advertisers, is the crux of
this paper.
History: History of newspapers and media organisations in three countries, United
Kingdom, United States of America and India is covered in this paper. This makes the
students aware of the process by which the newspapers shaped up during its initial
stages to lead to the vast mass media infrastructure that we have today.
Practical: Faculty advisor for Student Reporter, lab journal for 10years. In charge of
media file for three years and Tele-news-board (Wall Newspaper) for ten years.
MA –II
Interpretative and Investigative Journalism: The challenge posed by the electronic
media made sure that the newspapers either re- invent themselves or perish. The
newspapers chose to do the former. The process of the changing face of print media led
to introduction of many specialized forms of writing styles. This papers deals with
these changes. Practical assignments comprise of bringing out a quarterly publication
by students, wherein all work from planning to implementation is carried out by the
students.
