Reservoir Detachment assembled at the
Otterbein Marine Barracks in Lebanon, OH, to
honor retired Marine Aviator Leonard “Len”
Mapes. Along with Dody, his wife of 67
years, Otterbein Marines of WW II and Korea

looking on, Len was formally awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal some 66 years after
earning it. Leading the award ceremony were Chosin Reservoir Detachment Commandant
John Tonkin, and Sr. Vice Commandant Paul Plominski.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony, Loveland, OH
On the 30th of May, veterans from American
Legion Post 256 and the Chosin Reservoir Det.
Memorial Team, MCL, proudly marched in the
Loveland Memorial Day Parade. Memorial Team
NCOIC Tim Plurien called cadence while carrying
the National Colors, Bob Collier carried the Marine
Corps Colors, and Paul Plominski and Walter
Golladay anchored the flanks as riflemen.
Guest speaker for the Memorial Day Ceremony
was Chosin Reservoir Detachment Chaplain James
Meyers. His presentation was well received by the

The 175th Regularly Scheduled Meeting of the Chosin Reservoir Detachment was held on 15 June 2011,
at The Snyder House, 5847 Irwin Simpson Road, Cottell Park, Mason, OH 45040
Commandant’s Message / Comments:
Commandant Tonkin opened the meeting and welcomed the
group of Marines in attendance that evening.

#1 A Roll Call of Officers revealed all were present with
the exception of Jr. Vice Commandant Steve Griffith,
Paymaster Mark Johnson, Judge Advocate Vern Flannery and
Sgt-at-Arms Bob Collier.
#3 The Meeting Minutes from the previous meeting
were acknowledged to be correct, and approved as written.
#5 Correspondence: The Ohio Buckeye newsletter was
received and mentioned during the meeting.

#8 c) The Role of the Warren County Veterans
Service Commission (WCVSC) - The Role of the Veterans
Service Commission is to oversee the operation of the
Veterans' Office; to provide temporary financial assistance to
veterans, spouses, dependent children and surviving spouses;
and to assist veterans in obtaining earned benefits from
federal, state, and local levels of government. The Office
Director is authorized to disburse up to $1,000 per person
per visit.
# 8 c) Disbursements to-date for the month of June amount
to $10,251.92.

#8 d) Due to personal commitments, I will not be able to
participate in the Loveland 4th of July Parade. However, if
someone shoots photographs, I will gladly produce a
photographic article for the newsletter. If anyone attends
any other military or patriotic event and takes photographs,
send them to me and a photographic article can be prepared.
#8 e) Since our last meeting no Casket Guard details were
performed by the unit. Eight EGAs remain in our inventory.

# 8 f) Discussed the creation of a Facebook page. The only
information available will be whatever is required for me to
set up the page. Page will include a contact form similar to
the one on the Officer’s page. Users will be able to post to
the facebook page. Purpose is to have a presence on
Facebook similar to other Marine Corps League detachments.
Detachment approved the implementation.

Memorial Team NCOIC’s Message / Comments:
#8 g) Loveland 4 July Parade details. The Detachment
will lead the parade. The parade starts at 1900 and will go
from the elementary school all the way through downtown
Loveland. We will meet at the parking lot by the train station
at 1815 and I will drive us all over to the start point. I will
need volunteers so anybody that is will please come forward
and I will add you to the roster.
Tim will send email seeking volunteers. John will follow
up.

& FUNERAL GUARD SUMMER UNIFORM OF THE DAY
will include the: White Short Sleeve Shirts with MCL & U.S.
Flag patches; MCL star-bursts on collars; white t-shirts (no
V-neck); Red Garrison Cover; Dress Blue Trousers w/blood

stripe; black shoes & socks; white gloves; white belts
inserted into belt loops; Marine Corps buckle. DOD

includes the Blue Sweater (no DOD Ribbons or Shooting
Medals underneath) and the Red Chosin Reservoir
Detachment Jacket. Effective 7 November, the Winter
uniform will be the norm.

a) Detachment logo gear available through the link on the
Detachment website.
b) Jim Meyers presentation @ Bill Taylor’s work place
was very well received.
#11 Good of the League:
a) Get-to-Know-Your-Members - Marine Mark Johnson
was not present.
b) Jim Meyers donated the book Dr Tom’s War to the
detachment library.
b) Gerry Haas and Walter Golladay will be going to
NASCAR Qualifications, July 30, at Indianapolis. Leave
about 0600 and return about 1800. Seats available in car.
