Christmas
Collection Collection
Celebrating 40 40 Years Years
It’s hard to believe. It has been 40 years since I first opened a coin shop in Panama City. That small
one-man coin shop has changed alot over the years. Today Coin & Bullion Reserves has become a twenty
employee operation that is a market leader in Fine Jewelry, Rare Coins, and Precious Metals. In this, our
40th year, Coin & Bullion Reserves will have over $100,000,000 in gross sales. In celebration of 40 years
in business we would like to present to you, our loyal and valued customers our “Christmas Collection.”
In the following pages you will find some of the most exquisite fine jewelry acquisitions from
manufacturers, estates, individuals, and collectors from all over the world. Many of these items are one of
a kind antique pieces, much sought after by discriminating jewelry collectors.
In the numismatic section of the collection you will find a selection of rarities from our extensive inventory
of rare coin treasures. These prices are generally for advanced collectors but we have coins for all levels
of collectors. Whether you need to fill holes in your collection, or would like to build an investment portfolio
of rare coins, visit our showroom and ask for Larry.
Small antiques have always appealed to me. In this catalogue you will find a wonderful selection of unusual
items I have accumulated over a period of many years. If you fancy rare silver items you should take a
look at the Tiffany & Co. Sterling Vase, or perhaps the very rare sterling Epergne from 1902 by Elkington &
Co Ltd. If you would just love to eat your morning cereal from an 18 Kt solid gold bowl; with an 18 Kt gold
spoon, we have the perfect item for you. If you desire something a little more practical you might want to
take a look at our 14 Kt gold cigar cutter.
Coin & Bullion Reserves could not have attained the level of success we have without the confidence,
consideration, and continued support of a great many people. Panama City is and always has been my
home, and I am extremely proud of the level of patronage my business has had from the people here. I
hope that you will enjoy perusing our Christmas Collection, and I will genuinely appreciate a visit by you to
our showroom.
I will be forever grateful for the trust you have placed in me and I will endeavor to continue to earn your
business, because I am.
Sincerely Yours,
The Dress Clip
The Dress Clip became the most important jeweled accessory of the 30’s. Usually worn
in pairs at the neckline, they were held in place by means of a flat backed hinged
mechanism that snapped shut over the fabric’s edge. The story is that Louis Cartier came
up with the idea for the clip while watching a woman use clothespins to hang laundry out
to dry. These versatile ornaments could also be worn on jacket lapels, hats, purses, belts,
and with the attachment of an additional pinback such as this one, could be joined for
wear as a brooch. 8.50ctw mounted in platinum.
Age of Diamonds
The 18th century was known as the “Age of Diamonds.”
At the beginning of the 1700s royalty and nobility were the primary wearers of jewels of high intrinsic value. In
1762 Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, posed for her portrait wearing, among other jewels, a diamond
stomacher which covered her entire V-shaped bodice. Low necklines and upswept hair suggested long earrings
and short necklaces. The girandole (French for ‘chandelier’) and pendeloque were popular shapes for
necklaces, pendants, and earrings. Pendeloques are single pear-shaped drops suspended from a central
element with small accents, as shown in this modern interpretation of the Elaborate Edwardian style.
Early artists were fascinated by glass, and it is that
fascination that fueled the development of enamels and various enameling techniques
shortly after the discovery and use of glass. The history of enamels covers several
millennia, dating back to early dynastic times in Egypt, Sumeria and Mesopotamia.
Ancient craftsmen used enamels as replacements for gemstones in the making of jewelry.
Certain colors of glass were substituted for specific gemstones. Cobalt blue was
substituted for rare lapis lazuli, and opaque blue-green was
used as a substitute for turquoise.
The emerald has been a gem of
fascination in many cultures for
over six thousand years. It is so
prized, that carat for carat, a fine
emerald may be two to three times
as valuable as a diamond.
Many cultures throughout time
have believed the emerald to be
an enormously powerful stone in
different ways. The ancient
Egyptians believed the
emerald stood for fertility and
beliefs that the emerald brings
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5%
silver and 7.5% by mass of other metals, usually
copper. Fine silver is 99.9% pure and is generally too
soft for producing functional objects. From about 1840
to somewhere around 1940 in the United States and
Europe, sterling silver flatware became “de rigueur”
when setting a proper table. The height of the silver
craze was during the 50 year period from 1870-1920.
Flatware lines during this period sometimes included
up to 100 different types of pieces. This was especially
true during theVictorian period when etiquette
dictated nothing should be touched with one’s fingers.
Flatware sets were often accompanied by numerous
holloware items such as tea sets, trays, water and
wine pitchers, candelabra, and elaborate
centerpieces. The sterling craze extended to items
used at the office, in the boudoir, and even to children.
Shreve & Co. 18kt Gold Soup Bowl with Underplate and Spoon
Shreve & Co., a San Francisco institution, was founded in 1852, three years after the beginning of the
California gold rush. Over its history Shreve has produced some wonderful things including the state of
California's gift to Queen Elizabeth for her coronation. Also, special orders for kings, presidents,
sheiks, shahs, and other high profile individuals. One of the more remarkable items made was a 14 pound 18kt
gold life-size figure of a rooster and a 10 inch tall bear made from gold and given to
President Teddy Roosevelt during a visit to San Francisco.
This wonderful 18kt gold soup bowl with under plate and spoon certainly follows the Shreve tradition of producing
unique gold items. The pattern is called “14th Century” and was produced during the Arts and Crafts period
(1897-1915). The Lenox cobalt & gold liner measures 5 inches in diameter. The liner is held by an 18kt gold cup
that measures 2 ½ inches high by approximately 6 inches wide (including the Handle). The cup rests on an under
plate that is 6 1/8 inches in diameter by 1 inch high at its edge. To complete the grouping is a spoon that
measures 6 3/8 inches in length. All three pieces are marked Shreve & Co. 18kt. All three gold pieces have a
lustrous hand hammered surface indicative of the Arts & Crafts Style. The underplate and cup are monogrammed
with the initials “JB” in Old English script.
This item falls into the category of great rarity,
and owning this unique piece is certain to make
you feel special as well.
Superb 17 Inch
Tiffany Sterling Vase
The name Tiffany & Co. has
long been associated with
quality and exclusivity in the
jewelry and sterling silver
marketplace. The company
was founded in 1837 by
Charles L. Tiffany. In 1852
Tiffany introduced the
English Sterling silver
standard to America for
Tiffany silver. This standard
was later made into federal
law determining the
minimum amount of fine
silver needed for articles
marked “Sterling Silver”.
Tiffany displayed fabulous
sterling items in both
national and international
exhibitions in the 1890's
and the first two decades of
the 20th century. This
superb 17 inch sterling
vase’s markings indicate
that it was manufactured
between 1907-1938. It's
style indicates that it was
probably made during the
latter half of that time
period. It would have a
stunning presence in
a foyer or dining room
Edwardian English Sterling Epergne Circa 1902
As can be seen by its hallmarks, this Edwardian English sterling epergne was produced in Birmingham
England by the Elkington & Co. Ltd in 1902. The Edwardian era corresponds with the reign of
King Edward the VII (1901-1919) and the Elkington Company famously received various royal warrants
of appointments and royal commissions. The epergne measures 12” high by 12 1/2” wide and reflects the
Art Nouveau style. The fluted central column supports a pieced central basket adorned with foliate swags.
The central column also supports four scrolled arms which in turn support four pierced and
decorated sweet treat baskets. The epergne base rests on four shell feet connected by more highly ornate
and detailed swags. This wonderful piece of sterling holloware would have served as a center piece on
a dining table. The main basket would have held fruit while the smaller baskets would have held sweet
treats. These items were consumed after the main courses of the meal had ended. This striking piece of
silver would make an elegant decorative statement on either your holiday dining table or sideboard.
Unique Gorham Cast Sterling
Bon-Bonnieré Server
This late 19th century sterling
server was manufactured by the
Gorham silver company of Providence,
Rhode Island. This magnificent
bon-bonniere' features beautiful
detailing. The heavy foliate decoration
is the height of Art Nouveau
styling and the handle culminates in
the face of the Green Man, representing
the natural world. The bent handle
design allowed the server to be placed
over the forearm as the waiter went
around the table between courses or
at the end of the meal offering a
sugared candy known as a bon-bons
to the diners. This wonderful sterling
Music Boxes
The antique music box, whether a Swiss cylinder music
box or an American disc playing music box, is one of the most
magical machines of the ages. Few antiques can stimulate and
delight the senses the way a melodious music box does when it
begins to play.
Swiss cylinder music boxes were only made in quantity
from 1880 to 1895. Large-scale cylinder boxes were made with
powerful movements and played a variety of sophisticated
musical arrangements, typically on one fixed cylinder.
Disc music boxes were made between 1885 and 1905.
They were made in a variety of qualities and sizes,
playing discs of 6”diameter on up to huge machines
playing 27” discs. The Germans and Americans dominated
the disc music box market.
Four Pieces 1917 Large Size
Legal Tender $1 Notes
The series 1917 legal tender notes is a classic and
rarely seen piece of U.S. currency. As was all paper
money printed by the federal government prior to
1928 (excepting the postal and fractional currency
of the civil war error) these notes were printed in the
large size of 7 3/8” X 3 1/8”. All of these size notes
have been nicknamed “horse blankets’ because
of their large size. The 1917 $1 features a portrait
of George Washington. This is a truly remarkable
opportunity to buy four choice to gem uncirculated
examples of this note that are consecutively
numbered. The fact that they are so well preserved
is unusual in itself but to find four notes which have
been together since they have been printed in 1917
is truly remarkable.
FR#107 Rosecrans/Huston
PMG GEM Uncirculated 66
Exceptional Paper Quality
This is one of the most popular legal
tender notes ever printed in the U.S. It is
affectionately known as the jackass note.
This piece shows full margins and bold
colors on front and back. Some of the
finest details of the seal are fully
embossed and visible.
Very rarely seen in this lofty
grade and is very fairly priced
at just $4500
1879 $4 Gold Flowing Hair Stella NGC
PR63 Cameo
This is perhaps the most widely recognized example of
extreme numismatic rarities in existence. This denomination
was never issued for general circulation. They were
only minted in 1879 & 1880. Two varieties were struck
each year, a total for the four varieties of the two years
minted amount to a whopping 739 pieces! To suggest that
this coin is rare would obviously be an understatement. To
mention that it is one of the most desirable of all American
numismatic treasures is unnecessary. Consequently, this
coin is being offered at a relatively bargain price of only
1851 Humbert $50 Gold AU53 NGC Reeded Edge,
No 50 on reverse
1851 was the first year of coinage at the U.S. Assay Office of Gold in San
Francisco. Only fifty-dollar ‘slugs’ were struck that year. Initial varieties bore
the date on the edge, but beginning with Kagin-5, the date was moved to the
obverse exergue, a small step in the transition of the Assay Office output from
ingot to coin status. This hefty apricot-gold example is more attractive than
most K-5 slugs, which tend to come with edge dings, scratches, hairlines, or
repairs. The present piece has substantial luster, and marks are generally
limited to a few faded abrasions near AMERICA and a tick before the T in
THOUS. This coin was minted by the U.S. Assay office in California before
there was an official mint. The $50 gold piece was accepted as legal tender
on a par with standard U.S. gold coins and was known variously as a Slug,
Quintuple Eagle, or 5-Eagle piece. It was officially termed an Ingot.
A Rare Numismatic Treasure
Coin enlarged
The Half Disme of 1792
On July 1,1792, David Rittenhouse was appointed director of the soon to be opened U.S. mint.
On July 9th,1792 he received permission to mint cents and small silver coins. George Washington was
desirous of having silver coinage struck as soon as possible as a public act internationally
demonstrating the authority of the new nation and to help alleviate the shortage of small change.
Legend has it that Washington deposited his families silver flatware as the initial metal to strike coins. Rittenhouse
started with the half disme, for as the smallest silver coin, it would allow the largest minting from the limited quantity of
available silver. The mint was not yet completed. Because of the desire to begin minting as soon as possible,
Adam Eckfeldt, a mint employee, and others, struck the coins on a coin press in the basement of a saw makers shop
near the mint. About 1500-2000 of the half disme were minted. When the coins had been struck, they were to be delivered
to Washington who was unable to immediately pick them up. They were all hand delivered to him by Thomas
Jefferson the same day. This very rare coin was actually held by two of our most important founding fathers.
It is hard to imagine a more coveted coin than this classic american rarity.
Three Rare $2.50 Quarter Eagle
1831 $2 1/2 Gold Capped Head Left MS66 NGC
This type of Quarter Eagle was made for only six years. In that six years
approximately 25,000 coins were minted. Only 4,520 being struck in 1831,
this is one of the scarcest of all gold type coins. The present example is
one of the most spectacular examples of numismatic history that I have
witnessed in 40 years. It is impossible for any serious coin collector not to
be amazed by the mint luster, quality of strike, and state of preservation
of this incredible example. This coin deserves to be bought by someone
willing to put it away for another generation or two. I believe that the coin
has the potential to join the ranks of US coins that have sold for over $1
Million. It must be seen to be fully appreciated.
Expensive? Perhaps- but worth every cent of the
asking price of
$129,000
1899 $2.5 Liberty NGC PF67 Ultra Cameo
“Holy Cow” If you love rare coins, and you only have the opportunity
to own one gold coin, this piece should be considered. Describing the
appearance of this coin in mere words cannot convey the amazement
one feels when looking at it in person. Only three coins of this date have
received this lofty grade and only one finer.
This is a monster coin and priced right at only
$34,500
1911-D $2 ½ Indian Gold MS63 PCGS
Widely known as the key date Indian quarter eagle, the
1911-D had an original mintage of 55,680 coins, only
about 20% of the next lowest mintage Indian quarter
eagle, the 1914. Because few examples were saved
at the time of issue, most of those that survive today
are in various circulated grades. This splendid 1911-D
quarter eagle has full yellow-gold luster with only a few
minor abrasions. Whether you need to complete your
collection of $2 ½ Indians or get started collecting them
by buying the toughest one first, this 1911-D should fit
the bill. The strike is bold throughout, with one of the
sharpest mintmarks we can remember handling.
Three Rare Half Eagles
1807 $5 Gold Bust Left MS64 NGC
The opportunity to own a mint state example of an 1807 $5 gold piece
comes along very rarely. To own one in MS64 is even more so as there
are only 16 other coins so graded. The coin is sharply struck and the mint
luster is outstanding, being undisturbed by any but the most insignificant
surface marks. A real treasure for any coin collector and can be yours for
the very reasonable price of
1872-CC $5 Liberty Head Gold NGC AU55
Only 16,980 pieces were struck of this heavily circulated issue. Today a mere
70-80 coins are believed extant in all grades with the majority in VF-XF condition.
This is one of the finest known and it happens to be a
mid-Condition Census example, according to the census listed in Doug
Winter’s 2001 CC gold reference. The surfaces are bright with even
yellow-gold color and significant amounts of mint luster remain surrounding
the devices. This is the perfect coin for the collector of CC mint gold or
anyone wishing to put away a classic American rarity and it is attractively
priced at
$24,500
1890-CC $5 Liberty Gold MS65 NGC
Although we tend to think of the Comstock Lode as primarily silver, it
was also a major producer of gold. Rusty Goe writes in The Mint on
Carson Street,” Approximately $2 million worth of gold bullion was
produced on the Comstock in 1890 as the last semblance of the
prosperity the region enjoyed in the 19th century began to tail off.
Almost 100% of this output was deposited at the local mint and turned
into coins with a face value of $2.28 million.” The 1890-CC half eagles
were the first produced there since the 1884-CC and they were struck
in relative abundance -- 53,800 pieces. This gem is tied for finest
known with four other coins certified as MS65 and none finer.
A fabulous reminder of a bygone era and a very sought after
numismatic rarity and it can be yours for
Rare Eagle and Double Eagle
1908 Saint Gaudens $20 Gold No Motto,
Wells Fargo PCGS MS68
This historic coin comes from a hoard of nearly 10,000 high quality 1908 No Motto
St. Guadens $20 gold pieces that were discovered in the early 1990’s in a bank
vault in California where they had resided since shortly after they were minted in
1908. Prior to the discovery of this hoard, owning a MS68 St. Gauden $20 piece
would have been a very expensive proposition, as only one coin was known out of
the millions of coins minted. In this hoard there were 100 coins that graded MS68,
always satiny and expectantly silky-smooth. This outrageously nice example
provides the collector with the opportunity to own one truly extraordinary Saint. You
can add this historically important superb gem to your numismatic holdings for only
$21,900
1801 Heraldic Eagle $10 Gold NGC MS64
“The Eagle” or ($10 Gold piece) was one of the bedrock denominations of the coinage act
of 1792. Smaller denominations were fractions of the eagles (i.e. quarter eagle for the $2
½ & half eagle for the $5) and the larger denominations would later be known as multiples
of the eagles (i.e. double eagle $20). Because of the shortage of gold and the stringent
bonding requirements prevented this denomination from being produced until 1795. This
early eagle is the second variety of the first type of $10 gold piece ever minted in this
young nation. The fact that the coin still exists at all is pretty remarkable, but to exist in
this state of preservation is rather incomprehensible. There is no more desirable or
coveted numismatic item than an early gold eagle and
this one can be yours for only
$129,500
1907 High Relief $20 Gold
In 1907 at the behest of President Teddy Roosevelt, the noted sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens, designed this new $20 gold
piece. He was instructed by Roosevelt to make a beautiful coin to replace what he felt was a mundane design then in circulation.
By all accounts he certainly succeeded with this extremely popular design. The date was expressed in roman numerals and the
first 11,250 pieces were struck in such high relief that they almost appear sculpted. After those pieces were struck, the design
was altered to allow them to be struck on high speed coining presses. The date was changed to arabic numerals.
Nearly everyone who aspires to collect U.S. gold coins desires to own at least one specimen of the high relief MCMVII.
We currently have two mint state examples and one proof specimen to offer at very attractive prices.
Extremely Rare Type Coins
With a mintage of a mere 40,000 coins it is rather
surprising that any mint state examples of the 1913-S
quarter even exist. For a coin to have been preserved in
the grade of MS67+ is nothing short of a miracle. There
are two MS67+ coins graded by NGC and none finer. A
single MS68 example was graded at PCGS. This is the
second rarest barber quarter in the entire set and a forward
looking collector/investor might do well to consider
beginning a set with this coin and the 1901-S listed nearby.
This coin is well worth the asking price of
$49,500
This is an amazing example of the key date coin in the
Barber Quarter series. Only five coins have been graded
MS67 at both grading services. At least some of those were
certainly duplicates (coins sent to both services hoping for
an upgrade).
The 1901-S quarter is rare in all grades and extremely so
in this state of preservation. This coin is blast white and has
unbelievable eye appeal. Whether you are a serious
collector of the barber series, or an astute investor who
puts away only the best, this is an opportunity
that shouldn’t be missed.
1858 Seated Liberty Quarter PCGS MS65
When one looks at a quarter minted in 1858 and sees a coin in this state of preservation,
one of the first questions that comes to mind is ‘how?” Wouldn’t it be interesting to know
how this coin which is 154 years old could look like it was minted yesterday? While we
can’t know the answer to that question, we can certainly enjoy and appreciate the fact that
someone made the effort to preserve it. This appears to be an undervalued type coin.
1892 Barber Half NGC PF65
The 1892 may be the most popular barber half among proof type collectors. It is, after
all, a first year issue. As evidenced by this example, it is obtainable even in the higher
grades in proof condition. This piece is virtually untoned with highly reflective fields that
offer a mild cameo-like effect against the frosted design elements.
1878 Shield Nickel NGC PR65
The shield nickel is the first 5c coin made of nickel in the United States. It was minted from
1866-1883. In 1877 & 1878 the coin was made only in proof condition. A mere 2350 coins
were minted in 1878. This example would certainly be at home in a
complete set of high grade shield nickels. And at this time it is still
very attractively priced at only
1880 Trade Dollar NGC PF65 Cameo
This is a completely brilliant Gem proof example of this
proof-only year in the Trade Dollar series. There is
excellent cameo contrast. I find it utterly amazing that a
large silver coin can be found in this state of preservation
after 130 years. Only 1980 pieces were made in 1880.
luster along with aquamarine toning. This
is a very respectable example of a pre-1800
