ZERO-SIGHTLINE DOWNLIGHTS 

Our zero-sightline trims install flush to the ceiling to 

create a sleek finish without any visual distractions—just 

a smooth surface punctuated with the beauty of pure 

light. Because all parts are precision-engineered, with a 

proper installation, there will be no ceiling cracking for 

years and years. 

We make flush-fit installation easy. Housings come 

direct from the factory ready to accept the zero-sightline 

kit. Simply frame in the housing, apply drywall, then 

align the screw holes on the appliqué with those on the 

rotatable collar on the housing, and secure. The rotatable 

collar is a Lucifer innovation that makes it fast 

and easy to align successive square trims in a ceiling— 

the trim orientation can be rotated after the housing is 

installed but before spackle is applied. After the appliqué 

is spackled and painted, the downlight is installed. 

Fixtures can also be specified without an appliqué so the 

trim can overlap the ceiling.

We engineered the industry’s first dual-axis, gear- 

driven downlights with 45º aim and superior center 

beam optics. 

Concealed internal gear trains create self-locking, 

anti-skid, rotatable, and aimable two-axis adjustments. 

All adjustment mechanisms are concealed by the 

fixture faceplate, which is easily removed to provide 

immediate access to the lampholder. Rotation and tilt 

can be adjusted from inside the room, using just a 

screwdriver, without removing the fixture or damaging 

the ceiling, and while the light is on, so you can see the 

effect while you’re creating it. 

ZERO-SIGHTLINE DOWNLIGHT GEaR-DRIVEN DOWNLIGHT 

In addition, an indexing key on the fixture precisely aligns 

with the die-cast key slot in the appliqué to guarantee 

the lampholder—and therefore, your lighting design— 

stays in position after every relamping. Most fixtures can 

accept up to three effects devices to control beam, color, 

and glare. A black, baffle eliminates aperture glare.

MR AND LINE VOLTAGE HALOGEN 

Halogen lamps are incandescent lights that use filaments 

originally developed for the automotive industry. 

Those in the MR (multifaceted reflector) configuration 

are known for their precision and variably focused beam 

that uses IR (infrared) technology to efficiently pack 

light at 24 lumens per watt, offering higher wattage 

performance at lower wattage consumption. Because 

their color temperature is similar to sunlight, color, 

texture, skin tones, fabrics, and food all look natural 

under halogen lights. Special Halogen IR lamps contain 

no mercury, are energy efficient, offer instant-on, and 

are easily dimmable, making them a versatile choice.

MR HID 

High intensity discharge lamps are an arc source, often 

referred to as metal halide. Usually thought of as very 

high wattage, large area light sources, low wattage, 

ceramic metal halide HID lamps offer an energy-efficient 

alternative to standard incandescent light sources, with 

similar color temperature and rendition. They are effective 

in applications where instant-on, instant re-strike, or 

dimming are not required, such as high-ceiling interiors, 

retail stores, public spaces or residential exteriors where 

the fixtures are operating on controls.

CHOOSING a LIGHT SOURCE 

The lighting industry is at a welcome crossroads where 

technological advancements are now able to support 

environmental concerns by offering lamps that conserve 

energy while providing the quality of illumination designers 

demand. The following information will help you choose 

the appropriate lamp for your Lucifer Lighting fixture. 

LED 

Light emitting diodes are solid state light sources that 

are rapidly approaching the energy efficiency of CFLs. 

Their small size brings them close to the optimal point 

source and creates a range of opportunities for energy 

efficient lighting design, especially for display and 

accent lighting in lower ambient environments. LEDs 

are also available in a wide range of white and discrete 

colors, do not emit harmful IR (infrared) or UV (ultraviolet) 

radiation, and do not contain mercury. LEDs are 

currently not bright enough to supplant halogen lamps 

for general illumination.

CFL 

Compact fluorescent lamps are an arc source that use 

less power and have a longer life than incandescent 

lamps, but their color temperature and rendition is not 

as natural. Also, though they efficiently radiate diffuse 

light over a broad area, they do not focus well, so are 

not suited for accent lighting. While they are extremely 

energy efficient, they do contain small amounts of 

mercury which complicates disposal options and raises 

questions about their environmental impact.

CHOOSING a FIxTURE aDDING EFFECTS DEVICES 

Most downlights are available with either round or 

square faceplates. Many architects and designers find 

round trims to be the most versatile and accommodating, 

especially in irregularly shaped rooms, while 

square trims can be especially effective in square or 

rectangular spaces and when used in soffits to wash a 

wall with light. 

Fixed 

To light a generalized area, such as a reception area, 

office, corridor, or discrete area in a room, like a sofa 

or dining table, fixed fixtures will provide crisp, 

uniform illumination. 

adjustable 

Adjustable fixtures provide more focused illumination 

to accent specific objects, such as a work of art, display 

shelving, or interior furnishings. They are also useful in 

interiors where furniture may be moved or its final 

position is unknown. 

Gear-Driven 

If art, displays, or furnishings may change locations, 

gear-driven, adjustable fixtures allow light to easily be 

redirected. Gear-driven fixtures also allow you to 

effectively position accent lights without moving the 

finished trim in orientation to the ceiling. 

Wallwash 

A wallwash fixture will provide a soft and even wash 

of light from where the wall meets the ceiling to where 

it meets the floor, without scalloping. Wallwashing is 

generally enhanced by using three or more fixtures. 

Wet Location 

Stainless steel fixtures are corrosion resistant, making 

them appropriate for dry, damp, and wet exterior 

locations, such as showers, baths, and under soffits 

and eaves. Polymer fabricated trims are an excellent 

alternative for use in harsh marine environments. 

Effects devices are heat-treated glass lenses, color 

filters, and black metal louvers and baffles. They allow 

a designer to shape and control light to customize the 

space, create added emphasis, or set a particular mood. 

Clear lens (1) 

Clear borosilicate glass lens for unlensed lamps; 

conforms to NEC and NFPA codes. 

Ultra-violet lens (2) 

Made by Bausch and Lomb; blocks 99% of UV 

radiation from light sources. 

Spread lens (3) 

Scatters and diffuses the light and is typically used 

on rough and textured surfaces. 

Linear spread lens (4) 

Shapes the light into a vertical or horizontal 

elongated form that is typically used to illuminate 

columns or retail displays. 

Soft focus lens (5) 

Softens and spreads the light beam. 

Honeycomb louver (6) 

Minimizes glare and, if stacked closest to lamp 

source, will also confine the beam. 

Warm tone lens (7) 

Adjusts color temperature of light to 2700 degrees 

Kelvin, which enhances the depth of tones on surfaces 

like wood panels. 

Frosted lens (8) 

Provides maximum beam diffusion and smoothes 

out scallops.

Z SERIES 

OVERVIEW 

The Z Series is the most diminutive downlight 

fixture collection Lucifer Lighting offers. In addition 

to small apertures, most fixtures have an outside 

dimension of 4" or less and profiles of only 55/1000 

of an inch, making them almost invisible against the 

ceiling. Also, most trims can be installed flush to 

the ceiling for zero-sightline applications. Precisely 

machined torsion spring clips ensure secure 

retention in ceilings that vary in thicknesses up 

to 1", and allow the trim to be rotated from below. 

Fixtures are listed for dry, damp, and wet locations. 

The Z Series fixtures are compatible with the 

following MR-16 style light sources: 20w to 75w low 

voltage halogen, 20w and 39w HID ceramic metal 

halide, 5w LED, and CCFL. 

For export markets that require a special terminal 

block on the downlights that will not be used with 

housings, we recommend you refer to international 

specification sheets for Z Series fixture construction. 

Z SERIES aNTI-GLaRE 

PROFESSIONaL BaFFLE 

Most Z Series open aperture trims include a 

distinctive, precision-engineered design feature, 

the Professional Baffle. This black, die-cast 

element covers the inside edge of the aperture 

to ensure the aperture edge is non-reflective and 

glare free when the fixture is illuminated. 

FINISHES aND aCCESSORIES 

Standard Z Series finishes are white and black with 

a matte granulated powdercoat, industrial gray with a 

glass bead blasted stainless steel finish, and polished 

chrome. Select trims are available in brushed stainless 

steel. Custom finishes are also available. 

All Z Series fixtures come with a frosted lens. Standard 

trims may accept multiple lenses or effects devices, 

depending on lamp. 

In areas of the ceiling where downlight fixtures may 

be installed at a future date, for example, to illuminate 

artwork when it changes position in a room, blankoff 

plates (DLA-BOP-Z-RD round or DLA-BOP-Z-SQ 

square) may be used. These blanks are appropriate 

for both zero-sightline and trim flange overlay ceiling 

conditions. Plates are easily removed using central 

pinholes.

wiring, thermal sensors, and power supplies. These 

components are framed in above the ceiling and 

their use is a product safety requirement mandated 

by the National Electric Code. 

SPECIFYING a HOUSING 

To correctly specify the appropriate housing, the 

following factors must be considered: 

Is this new construction or a remodel? 

If the project is new, interior construction and/or 

enclosed exteriors, is the insulation non-IC (at a 3" 

setback) or IC (insulation contacting housing). Note: 

NIC stands for non-insulated ceiling; IC stands for 

insulated ceiling. 

If the project is a remodel, the housing will be 

installed in the existing ceiling through a new cutout 

in the existing ceiling panel. 

Is a specialty fixture specified? 

If so, please refer to the specialty housing section. 

What is the power supply? 

While some lamps utilize mains voltage power 

directly from the building service, most HAL, HID, 

and CFL fixtures utilize a transformer or ballast to 

power the light source. Lucifer Lighting offers 

magnetic and electronic low voltage power supplies, 

but suggests using electronic wherever possible 

as they are energy efficient, quiet, lightweight, 

easily accessible, and in most cases do not require 

an interface with control systems.
