Sharing expertise…
“My father, Fernand Petzl, was an artisan and explorer
with a passion for caving. For him, creating and
refining equipment was a profound pleasure. He was an
obsessive, creative worker who offered his ideas to help
his companions by producing the tools they needed to
explore the caves of Chartreuse and Vercors (France).
From my childhood, I was immersed in this enthusiasm for
discovery.
Afterwards, at Petzl, we have always started with this
idea: designing tools for the people who use them. Tools
that help them progress and commit in vertical or
dark terrain. Innovative, useful, safe tools, often designed
above and beyond the requirements of existing gear. Petzl
has introduced changes to practices and techniques
that have allowed revolutions to take place in activities
related to lighting and verticality - the two areas of expertise
in the company. The headlamp in the mountains, the GRIGRI
in climbing… For forty years innovation has been at
the heart of our business - and it remains so now more than
ever.
By its very nature, progression has no limits: we are
constantly inventing new solutions, and there is no reason
for this to stop. Today I hope that we share the experience
and technical expertise we have acquired at Petzl as widely
as possible with those who participate in these activities.
It is with the desire to continue to propose and share
solutions for progression that we have prepared this
2011 edition of the Petzl catalogue.”
Partner check: safety check between partners
Climbing with zero risk is, of course,
impossible. However, learning the
right moves, both for climbing and
for using the equipment, significantly
reduces the risk of accident. But this
learning is not everything. Force of
habit, over-confidence, and fatigue
can all reduce vigilance. For greater
security, why not take advantage of the
fact that there are usually two climbers?
Particularly before really getting started,
when the equipment is being put into
place.
At the crag, as in the mountains, making
it a rule to partner check before leaving
the ground will make the climbing more
“relaxed”.
"Seriously, Dad, I never thought this could happen…
to you!"
This is how my twelve-year-old son Vincent scolded
me a few weeks after I had landed at his feet on a
cement floor after a 10-meter fall in a Grenoble climbing
gym. I can still hear the voices coming through
the fog of my bewildered conscience: "He wasn’t tied
in… look, the rope is still hanging from the top!"
I hadn’t completed my knot? Impossible! Not me!
And yet…
Yet it had been a Sunday like any other. Sure, I was
a bit tired, a little preoccupied, and in a somewhat
noisy gym. Nothing extraordinary, really. It was
nether the serac fall of the century, nor the collapse
of the West Face of the Drus! No reassuring explanation
to help me accept the unacceptable. Reasoning
only increased my incomprehension. In my twentyfive
years of amateur mountaineering and climbing,
never an accident, not even a close call. Maybe one
time a few rocks heard falling a bit too close… I’m
quite a safety fanatic, according to my friends. A
case in point: I had even backed up my son’s belay to
an over-stuffed pack.
www.petzl.com
And yet… that Sunday I made an error that could have
cost me my life. So, was it fate? No! A simple oversight:
counting on only your own vigilance shows a dangerous
lack of humility.
Any day, a seemingly innocent series of events can
lead to what many experts have sadly experienced.
This one day could be your last. However, with a
simple partner check of equipment prior to climbing,
it is easy to practically remove this type of risk. Participants
in other exposed activities, such as divers,
have understood and implemented this concept for a
long time. Why not we climbers, mountaineers and
cavers?
It is time for us, specially the regular participants, to
adopt new habits.
Backing off a single pitch: descending and removing gear
You are unable to climb any higher!
The lead climber is stuck at a bolt
in the middle of a pitch.
The easiest option is to be lowered on
top-rope, leaving the quickdraws and
asking someone to collect them later, or
collecting them yourself after climbing a
route next to it. If none of these options
is possible, how can you descend and
clean the route with limited risk?
5
Descend on a single bolt? Lower or rappel?
Avoid the risk of breakage
When it is difficult to estimate the strength
of a bolt, it is necessary to use a technique
that takes into account the risk of the anchor
breaking.
www.petzl.com
70 70 kg kg
≈ 115 ≈ 115 daN daN
70 70 kg kg
≈ 90 ≈ 90 daN daN
70 70 kg kg
Stress on the bolt
The stress on the bolt is approximately 25 daN higher with lowering than with rappelling
(for two people of 70 kg). This number is negligible compared to the strength required of
a bolt (2500 daN). The stresses placed on a bolt when lowering or rappelling are therefore
practically identical.
Lowering is therefore recommended since it allows the climber to remain tied in
throughout the lowering process.
Multi-pitch climbing
Self-rescue: ascending to the anchor after falling in an overhang
In multi-pitch climbs, a situation can
quickly become complicated and
delicate. For example, when finishing
an overhang, the leader falls and finds
him/herself hanging in midair, under
the roof. Imagine that it is impossible
to grab the rope or the rock, or to be
lowered by the second (not enough
rope). The only solution is to be
autonomous and ascend the rope alone.
The TIBLOC ascender, REVERSO 3 belay
device, slings and quickdraws will play
a key role. On multi-pitch routes, they
should never
be forgotten!
Installing the ascending system
1 - Install the TIBLOC ascender using a
locking carabiner. Make a knot at the end of
a sling and clip it into the carabiner. This will
be your footloop. Place the quickdraw into
the sling above the knot. The length of the
sling should allow you to stand up in it for
ascending.
3 - With a locking carabiner,
place the REVERSO 3 on
the harness in Reverso
mode. Install the rope in the
REVERSO 3 with a second
locking carabiner and take
up all the slack in the rope.
2 - Stand up to attach the quickdraw to the
harness. This maneuver creates slack in the
rope above the tie-in knot.
4 - Stand up in the sling to remove the quickdraw. Sitting in
the harness will transfer your weight onto the REVERSO 3.
Move the TIBLOC up the rope, stand in the sling and simultaneously take up the slack in the REVERSO 3. For maximum efficiency, keep the
body aligned with the rope. Sit in the harness, return the hand to the free end of the rope near the REVERSO 3 and repeat the maneuver.
Clipping a carabiner or quickdraw is
a basic technique associated with
the progression of a climber. At
first glance, nothing too complicated.
In the detail, though, there are many
aspects to consider in order to move
quickly and surely: in particular,
placement of the quickdraw into the bolt
essential.
in relation to the rope, and methods of is
clipping the rope. For example, when
Always use a quickdraw equipped with STRING type webbing
protection. The anchor-end carabiner must be mobile (no STRING).
The rope-end carabiner must be fixed (with STRING).
Warning: never install two STRINGs on one quickdraw. It would be
too rigid: risk of poor positioning (e.g. cantilevered loading).
Note: always use the same
carabiners for the anchor-end
or the rope-end. Never put
an anchor-end carabiner on
the rope-end. An anchor-end
carabiner may become slightly
nicked with use. During a fall,
if the rope rubs on such a nick,
it can become damaged and
require early retirement.
2 3
2 2 3 3
The carabiner gate must always face away from the climber’s direction of travel. The rope in the carabiner must pass through it from the cliff
side to the outside. Incorrect positioning of the quickdraw or the rope could cause the rope to unclip, either due to rope movement or to the
carabiner flipping on the bolt during a fall.
Mountaineering
Crevasse rescue: transferring a partner’s weight onto an anchor
On a glacier, the classic accident is
of course a fall into a crevasse.
If progression is on a taut rope,
the appropriate reflex of the surface
climbers would be to arrest the fall with
their counterweight. Once the fall is
arrested, the first priority is to create
an anchor to support the weight of the
victim. With a party of two, the surface
climber is alone. She must install an
anchor and transfer the weight of the
victim onto it by herself. To succeed,
she must carry out the following
sequence, all the while staying in
counterbalance and having all her gear
(progress capture pulley, carabiner,
sling…) easily accessible on the
harness. Training is essential!
Installation of the anchor
A dead-man anchor is used
The principle is to use an object that provides sufficient resistance to the tension exerted on it. In snow, you can bury an ice axe, a backpack,
a ski. If there is ice, you will need an ice screw. Complete the anchor by attaching a long sling. In snow, it is important to place the sling in a
groove in the anticipated direction of pull so that the buried object is not pulled out.
Hauling a bag: preparation and technique
13
www.petzl.com
© Tony Lamiche
In aid climbing, it is essential to organize your equipment. It is impossible to empty
your haul bag at each station to find an item forgotten at the bottom. Each item
must have its place. In the same way, organization for hauling should also be
efficient. First of all, having several bags of 30 to 40 kg, rather than one 80 kg bag, is
a good idea. It is not uncommon to see an inexperienced party leave with a huge bag
and spend two or three hours hauling it up one pitch! Choosing the hauling technique
best suited to, for example, a traverse or a big overhang is also key. Here are some
tips for efficiency and for avoiding any serious errors. Before you head off for a
vertical adventure of two or three days, training is strongly recommended.
Preparing for hauling
Attachment of haul bag
The haul bag should always
remain attached. The
attachment knot should be
protected with a cut plastic
bottle to keep it from snagging
in a crack or under an overhang.
Between the knot and the
bag, you can use a SWIVEL
to avoid rope twists during
manipulations. Only one of
the bag’s two haul straps is
attached to the carabiner or
maillon under the SWIVEL.
This way it is easy to open the
bag without dropping it. When
hauling, nothing should stick
out from the bag, and the sling
should be folded behind the
flaps. Have a lanyard ready for
attaching the bag to the station
(a knotted rope end is perfect).
Installing a progress capture pulley
Install the PRO TRAXION progress capture pulley on the
station, always with two connectors:
• one locking, for connecting the pulley to the station
• another for locking the swinging side plate
Always check the positioning of the pulley with respect to
the direction of rope pull. The direction of pull should be
in line with the pulley. With lateral pull, the rope can be
damaged, or get caught between the swinging side plate and
the sheave.
Remember: Because of the great stresses created during
hauling, the hauling station should be triangulated and
“bomb-proof”.
Information is non-exhaustive. Refer to the other pages as well as to the user instructions and technical manuals. Technical training is essential.

Aid climbing
Hauling a bag: preparation and technique
Hauling technique
“Balancier” technique
The easiest and most efficient hauling technique is the “balancier”
on the ASCENSION handled rope clamp. It uses the weight of the
body as a counterweight to raise the bag. This technique is efficient,
although it can only be used with a light bag (30 to 40 kg). For
heavier bags, you can either use two climbers for counterweight or
employ other hauling techniques.
Warning: during these manipulations, the counterweight climber
must always remain attached to the station with a rope.
www.petzl.com
Munter hitch
Traverses and overhangs
When the pitch is a traverse or a big overhang, the hauling technique
needs to be adapted. The goal is to place the bag plumb with the
direction of the hauling station to limit pendulums and stress on the
anchor. First, attach the bag several meters from the lower end of
the rope. The lower climber lowers the bag on a Munter hitch while
the upper climber hauls gently. Once the bag is vertically aligned
with the upper anchor, normal hauling continues.
Via ferrata
Progression on via ferrata: belaying a child
With children, it is essential to use a rope along with energy absorbing lanyards
1 - On a via ferrata, as with all vertical
activities, there is never a zero risk
factor. With children, the parents’ /
leaders’ vigilance should be heightened.
Some tips for preparing the outing:
• Choose a via ferrata that you know, one
that is manageable, with escape options,
and suited to your technical level as well
as your child’s
• Explain the instructions for safe
progression before leaving
• Be properly equipped: appropriate
footwear, technical equipment
(harnesses, energy absorbing lanyards,
helmets, ropes…)
• Plan for enough water and food
• And of course, check the weather
forecast before leaving
Most via ferrata
energy absorbers
are not designed
for belaying
children.
For example, the
SCORPIO lanyard
is designed
for belaying a
person weighing
between 45 and
90 kg.
15 www.petzl.com
© Tony Lamiche
A
2 - Regardless of the length of
the energy absorber, a classic
rope belay system should be set
up to enhance the child’s safety.
The rope is used only to belay
the child. To reduce weight, a
30 m length of UIAA rope is
sufficient. Use a figure eight
knot to tie into the harness.
via ferrata outing with the children
can be both fun and educational.
Bars, ramps, steps, suspension
bridges, and rope-bridges create a
playground that is ideal for learning
about upward progression.
3 - Use an energy absorbing
lanyard when passing
intermediate anchors.
4 - Over easy horizontal traverses, the
leader and child use their progression
lanyards to progress simultaneously with
the rope taut.
Belaying from a fixed anchor
7 - During vertical sections, the leader
progresses with energy absorbing lanyards
and passes the rope through the pigtails
or the quickdraws, if necessary, to keep
it in line. The child waits on belay with
his lanyards and helps manage the rope.
Caution: these pitches should not be too
long.
16
5 - While progressing, the leader passes the
rope through the pigtails or the quickdraws;
the child then removes it.
8 - Above the pitch, the leader should
remain visible and set up a station on the
energy absorbers in order to belay the
child’s ascent. The rope is used to avoid a
fall. The child removes the rope from the
pigtails while progressing.
the child connected to the cable in case of
a fall.
Trail running
Night trails: tips for choosing a headlamp
17
© Lafouche
Luminous flux
For a headlamp, the luminous flux, measured in lumens (lm), represents the total quantity of
visible light emitted. It is the equivalent of the horsepower of a car or motor. For example, a
Petzl ULTRA reaches a luminous power of 350 lm in maximum mode.
The quantity of light needed varies among individuals, the nature of the terrain and the
race and expected speed. Nevertheless, a good luminous flux allows you to see better, to
save your strength and to go faster. For technical trails, a power greater than 150 lm is
recommended.
Lighting distance
Light quantity, received by a surface, diminishes as its distance from the light source
increases. This is the lighting parameter that is measured in Lux. For many headlamp
manufacturers, lighting distance indicates the distance to which the quantity of light received
on a surface is equivalent to the quantity of light of a full moon (0.25 lux). For example, an
ULTRA in maximum mode has a lighting distance of 120 m. At 120 m the light it emits is the
same as that of a full moon, or 0.25 lux.
Shape of the beam
For the same light output, depending on the headlamp model, the flux can be uniformly
distributed over a very wide area, or be concentrated in a very narrow spot to have a much
greater lighting distance. This type of lighting is recommended for technical trails, where you
have to see far and quickly. For a “classic” trail, mixed lighting, which combines a wide beam
and a focused beam, is practical.
www.petzl.com
Having a good understanding of
lighting performance is essential
for choosing a headlamp for night
running. This performance is linked to
notions like luminous flux, distance,
battery life, and lighting regulation.
Let’s explore these parameters.
Trail running
Night trails: tips for choosing a headlamp
Duration/burn time
A headlamp’s battery life should be considered in relation to the length of the race. It is the length of time during which lighting is greater than
the light of a full moon (0.25 lux). It is expressed in minutes. For example, an ULTRA in high mode has a battery life of 3 h 15, meaning that
0,25 lux
2 m
t (h)
t 0 t 0h30 t 10h t 30h
after 3 h 15, the lighting of an ULTRA at two meters is that of a full moon, or 0.25 lux. Depending on the model of the headlamp, change in
light output over time is controlled in two ways: regulated lighting and non-regulated lighting.
18
2 m
t 0
0,25 lux
t (h)
Regulated lighting
Lighting level is constant. It remains at a high a level for a certain
period of time, then decreases markedly after that time. Regulated
lighting headlamps are designed for trails, where full power is
important.
Wearing the headlamp
Headlamps are worn either “all on the head” or in a BELT version (lighting on the head,
remote energy source). The BELT versions reduce the weight on the head. The remote
battery pack allows the energy source to be protected from the cold under clothes.
The energy available is thus better conserved.
CORE rechargeable battery and OS by Petzl software
The new CORE rechargeable battery is designed for the TIKKA 2 - ZIPKA 2 headlamp
line. This battery is easy to insert into the headlamp in a few seconds instead of the usual
three batteries. It offers an advantage over standard batteries for frequent or intensive
headlamp use. It is more economical to use - it pays for itself after four sets of alkaline
batteries. Lithium Ion Polymer technology guarantees a battery life equivalent to more than
900 batteries. The CORE battery contributes in a truly efficient way to limiting waste that is
harmful to the environment. It is very easy to insert and can be charged via any standard
USB charger: a cell phone charger, a multimedia device, cigar lighter charger, or even a solar
panel, a portable energy source, a computer, etc.
OS by Petzl software is intuitive and user-friendly, and allows you to configure the battery
to personalize the performance of TIKKA 2 - ZIPKA 2 headlamps to respond to your lighting
needs. Once the CORE is connected to a computer loaded with OS by Petzl, you can choose
between regulated or non-regulated lighting. Lighting duration and intensity can also be
adjusted.
www.petzl.com
t 0
0,25 lux
t (h)
Unregulated lighting
As soon as the headlamp is on, light output begins to decrease
gradually. This progressive decrease allows longer battery life.
This mode is useful when light output is not the most important
consideration.
Ascenders
ASCENSION B17SLN, B17SRG
Ergonomic handled ascender
Our handled ascenders have been refined to provide greater comfort, efficiency, ease of use. The ergonomically
shaped handle is over molded with dual density grip for greater friction and better grip. The grip is wider at the
bottom, providing better comfort for your pinkie fingers during use. The index finger indent has also been increased,
offering greater efficiency when pulling on the ascender. The cam has been redesigned to minimize friction when
sliding the ascender up the rope while the angled teeth provide secure grip in the worst conditions (wet, icy, or
muddy ropes). The geometry of the single piece aluminum frame ensures optimal handle orientation when the device
is loaded and will maintain solid, comfortable performance for ascents of any length.
MYO headlamps
MYO ® XP E83 P2
Powerful headlamp, four lighting modes, Boost mode and Wide Angle lens
The MYO XP headlamp was developed for high-level performance. To do this, it uses a high-output LED, a
Wide Angle lens, three constant lighting modes and a strobe mode. This headlamp provides powerful lighting that
can be adapted to the situation and the activity. The Wide Angle lens option is useful for instantly switching between
long-range and proximity lighting. If necessary, it is possible to occasionally increase the light output to 150 lumens
with the Boost mode (to locate a person, a car, etc.). To efficiently manage battery life, this headlamp comes with a
battery charge indicator light.
Light quantity: 85 lumens (maximum mode), beam type: wide / focused, distance: 72 m (maximum mode),
burn time: 180 h (economic mode), weight on the head: 175 g
MYO ® XP BELT E84 P2
Powerful headlamp with remote battery pack, four lighting modes, BOOST mode and Wide Angle lens
The MYO XP BELT headlamp evolved from the MYO XP. Its remote battery pack reduces the weight worn on the head
to 75 g and protects the batteries from the cold to prolong their burn time. This lamp has all the features required for
intensive use in any conditions: a high-output LED for powerful lighting, an optional Wide Angle lens for switching
between a wide and a spot beam, three constant lighting modes, a strobe mode for signaling, a Boost mode of
150 lumens, and a battery charge indicator light.
Light quantity: 85 lumens (maximum mode), beam type: wide / focused, distance: 72 m (maximum mode),
burn time: 180 h (economic mode), weight on the head: 75 g
MYO ® RXP E87 P
Powerful, regulated and programmable headlamp, four lighting modes, Boost mode and Wide Angle
lens
The MYO RXP is the first Petzl headlamp that is regulated and programmable, allowing the user to choose the order
of lighting levels and to precisely adapt light output. To do this, there are three lighting modes, for each of which the
user can select the power from among ten possible levels, from 8 to 140 lumens. This feature allows the lamp to be
programmed for the type of activity and the length of use. Maximum power lighting would be suited for a short night
run, for example; less powerful lighting would help preserve battery life and would therefore be ideal for a multi-day
trek. This headlamp has Boost mode (160 lumens) and a strobe mode that can be programmed. It is compatible
with lithium batteries to optimize performance, even at low temperatures. The Wide Angle lens offers the option of
switching instantly from a focused beam to a wide beam when necessary.
Light quantity: 140 lumens (level n° 10), beam type: wide / focused, distance: 77 m (level n° 10),
burn time: 95 h (level n° 1), weight on the head: 175 g
The sheath’s thickness and weave strike an excellent balance between toughness and handling, allowing the XION to
perform like a thicker rope while maintaining the feel of a thinner one.
Lengths: 60 & 70 m, diameter: 10.1 mm, type: single rope, weight: 66 g/m, UIAA falls: 7, impact force: 8.2 kN, elongation: dynamic: 33.6 %,
static: 6.7 %, % sheath by weight: 42 %, available in 2 colors: blue, green.
DOJO RD102200--
10.2 mm single rope for use in gyms
Gym ropes need to be extra durable to handle intensive, daily use. That’s why the DOJO is the hardiest member of our
dynamic rope family. It shrugs off abuse with a tightly woven, extra-thick sheath. In addition, the diameter is compatible
with most belay devices, for smooth feeding and lowering. Excellent for top roping, lead climbing and even big walls.
Length: 200 m spool, diameter: 10.2 mm, type: single rope, weight: 64 g/m, UIAA falls: 7, impact force: 8.6 kN, elongation: dynamic: 32.5 %,
static: 8.7 %, % sheath by weight: 44%, available in 2 colors: blue, red.

Training
The use of Petzl products demands technical knowledge and competence.
This is why Petzl offers to take each user, or retailer, through a range of specialized
workshops dedicated to vertical activities. These are available locally in each
country through Petzl’s international distribution network.
The Petzl Institute was created to be a place for exchange and experimentation.
Its goal is to unite experiences and knowledge under one roof in order to
invent and develop the techniques of tomorrow. To reach these objectives, it is
necessary to increase our understanding of the different components of verticality.
This modeling phase is essential. It must integrate human dimensions, both
physiological and psychological, as well as technical dimensions, which may
involve equipment or progression. For more information, please consult
The Petzl Foundation
Created in 2006, the Petzl Foundation’s
mission is to offer support to non-profit
organizations, especially in three areas:
- promoting safety awareness
- preserving the environment
- supporting fundamental research
Depending on the specific needs of
each country, the Petzl Foundation
proposes training programs, tools for
teaching and training in collaboration
with local associations or nongovernmental
organizations (NGOs).
