Vitafoods Europe has really
evolved since the first
edition. It began in
Copenhagen with less than
100 exhibitors and only a
few thousand visitors, but it now boasts over
600 exhibitors and welcomes more than
10,000 international visitors through its doors.
Evolving Markets
We have seen a great evolution in the
products that have been presented over the
last fifteen years. The antioxidant category,
one of the largest markets for nutraceuticals,
has offered various opportunities for
functional food and dietary supplement
applications. Cosmeceutical, personal care
and flavours have also been a major part of
our category development. Fatty acids such
as CLA and omega 3, 6 and 9 have also
become increasingly prominent in both the

How has your market changed
in the last 15 years?
“The market for herbs and botanicals has
changed significantly, driven by consumer
demographics and health concerns. The main
drivers for consumers are "simple" and
"natural". Natural ingredients are becoming the
rule rather than the exception. Consumer
awareness about the functional benefits of herbs
and botanicals is increasing. This has opened up
new opportunities for manufacturers, allowing
them to position botanicals and other natural
ingredients in products that no longer have to
compete with only synthetic ingredients. Focus
is on "natural" nutrition and Naturex is ideally
positioned on these trends. Vitafoods continues
to be the best show for nutraceuticals in Europe.

Is consumer demand for
functional foods and food
supplements going to
increase?
For sure, as more and more consumers
continue the drive to take control of their health
and seek ways to maintain performance and
health throughout life.
Is it going to become easier to develop and
market products?
Not unless action is taken at the political level.
The simple reason is regulation, and while in
life there may only be two certainties - taxation
and death - in the world of functional products
the only certainty is that, based on the current
trajectory, there will be more legislation and it
will be tougher.
And herein lies the prediction: more demand,
but much more difficulty to deliver to the
market the products to meet this demand. This
will inevitably be a big win for a smaller number
of companies, unless somewhere this
equilibrium changes. And it will be the internet
that cracks it. At some point governments have
to recognise that forcing companies to jump
through more and more fiery hoops in order to
sell a product makes no sense when
information and products will continue to be
available so easily online. As sales increasingly
go online and governments continue to fail to
get to grips with internet marketing, frustration
at the sheer unfairness will grow. In time,
permitting a wider range of products and a
wider range of consumer information on the
market legally will be the logical step to try to
get a grip on the situation and create the
regulators’ long-cherished ‘level playing field’.
Is 15 years a long enough period to deliver
this change?
It can be if companies can work out a plan for
the industry that requires change in legislation,
and communicate that clearly and effectively to
regulators. At some point the regulators are
going to need to wake up and recognise the
world they are creating and their role in it.

“My perception and expectations of Vitafoods
Europe has changed during the last decade. As a
youngster the exhibition was a perfect platform
to get to know the health & nutrition business set
up, the key suppliers, established ingredients and
the trends and demands for new ingredients.
