Introduction
Welcome!
Welcome to the Greater Susquehanna
Valley. Nestled among rolling mountain
ridges, broad valleys, deep forests and meandering
streams and brooks, the region offers
A central feature of the area is the
Susquehanna River, the nation’s longest,
non-navigable waterway flowing through
Pennsylvania’s rural heartland south to
Harrisburg and, ultimately, the Chesapeake
Bay. Throughout the centuries, this river has
shaped the region’s economic, community
and cultural life, defining the people whose
values and strong work ethic provided the
foundation for the region’s entrepreneurial
spirit.
Location
The Greater Susquehanna Valley is located
within a 3-hour drive of New York City,
Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington,
D.C. Encompassing Snyder, Union,
Northumberland and Montour counties,
Life here is different
You’ll soon notice that life here is a little
bit different. Considered the cradle of
American history, Central Pennsylvania
boasts a strong sense of community and
a proud heritage — characteristics once
celebrated in every American town.
Once here, you can take a step back in
time to celebrate the Norman Rockwell
way of life that prevails in Central
Pennsylvania. Vestiges of it are everywhere.
It’s not unusual to see an Amish family
trotting by in a horse-drawn carriage.
Quaint communities beckon with their
eclectic downtown shops and eateries.
Friendly people smile as you pass them
on the sidewalk.
The region offers a progressive side as well,
with lucrative business opportunities in the
Keystone Opportunity Zones and industrial
parks. The GSVCC is committed to
enhancing the region’s economic climate,
focusing its efforts on retaining existing
businesses while attracting new corporate
investments.
Recreation
Opportunities for outdoor recreation are
abundant. Trophy small mouth bass,
walleyes, muskie and other fish species
abound. Waterfowl of all types are available
to hunters and casual observers on the river
and adjoining waterways. The valley is
home to many state parks and forests,
providing opportunities for hiking,
backpacking, canoeing, kayaking and
mountain biking. In winter, cross-country
skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating and
downhill skiing can be accessed via the
adjacent Pocono Mountains.
4 Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce
The high quality of life and community
pride is enjoyed by established residents and
newcomers alike. Whether you’ve come
here to retire, take a new job or start your
own business, you’ll delight in the array of
attractions, historical events, fairs, festivals
and outdoor recreational opportunities.
To anyone who remembers a simpler, gentler
time, the positive aspects of life in the
Greater Susquehanna Valley affirm that it
doesn’t have to be a harried experience in a
fast-paced environment. The fact that so
many positive attributes — a low crime
rate, a pristine environment and lots of
open space — are found here, underscores
the region’s identity as a diamond in the
rough, just waiting to be discovered by
those seeking a higher quality of life.
Erica L. Shames, Publisher
Susquehanna Life Magazine
History
Innovation and invention have been at the
heart of the Greater Susquehanna Valley
since the first English settlers arrived in the
1700’s. Joseph Priestley, the discoverer of
oxygen, had his home and laboratory in
the borough of Northumberland.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s librettist,
Lorenzo Da Ponte (who penned the words
for The Marriage of Figaro and other
works), made Sunbury his home at the
close of the 18th century. Thomas Edison
chose Sunbury as the location for his
experiment with the first 3-wire electrical
system in the world. And the nation’s very
first iron mill was erected in Danville.
The Susquehanna Valley’s native inhabitants
were the Susquehannock, Delaware,
Shawnee, Muncy and Iroquois Indian
tribes, with the first European settlers
arriving in the 1750’s. Fort Augusta, located
in Sunbury, served as a frontier outpost
for the British Army during the French
and Indian War. Shortly after the war
ended in 1772, Northumberland County
was formed. In 1813, Union County was
formed and Lewisburg was named the
county seat. In 1850, the General
Assembly of Pennsylvania divided
Columbia County, creating Montour
County, with Danville as the county seat.
Finally, in 1855, Snyder County was
carved out of Union County, where
Middleburg was named the county seat.

Paula J. Cochran
“And when I had asked the name of the river, and heard that it was called
the Susquehanna, the beauty of the name seemed to be part and parcel of
the beauty of the land. That was the name, as no other could be for that
shining river and desirable valley.” - Robert Louis Stevenson
Communities
Danville
Located in the heart of the Susquehanna
Valley in the smallest of Pennsylvania’s counties,
Danville is the county seat of Montour
County. The town, a significant iron-making
center in the 19th century, has retained public
buildings and homes of prominent industrialists,
politicians and community leaders.
Among these noteworthy individuals is
William Montgomery, who founded and
laid out the town in the late 18th century,
and his son, Daniel, for whom the town is
named. Montgomery established the first
woolen, saw and grist mill, and later added a
distillery. He was also a pioneer in the use of
anthracite coal to heat homes in the county.
In 1792, William Montgomery constructed
the stone house that stands at the corner of
Mill Street and Bloom Road. An attached
frame structure on the east side replaced an
earlier log house. Today, the Montgomery
House, an excellent representation of the
Federal style of architecture, is a museum
that displays and celebrates the history
of the area.
Another contributor to Danville’s early
development was the Pennsylvania Canal
System. In 1826, William Montgomery’s
son, Daniel, was appointed to the Board of
Canal Commissioners, serving as its first
president. Through his leadership, the North
6 Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce
Branch of the Pennsylvania Canal was established
to provide transportation for shipping
a variety of products. A section of the canal
bed can still be viewed in the downtown
area crossing beneath Mill Street.
Danville’s development into an important
iron manufacturing center increased immigration
and the use of the canal system and
railroads. The iron manufacturing era began
with the John C. Thiel foundry in 1829 and
continued with the Columbia Furnace,
which is believed to have been the first
anthracite furnace in the nation.
The advance of the iron era led to
Danville’s greatest contribution to
America’s expansion, the manufacture of Trails.
Named for their distinctive “T”shape,
T-rails were being imported from England
at a great cost to railroad builders. In the
mid-1800’s, skilled iron finishers from
England were brought to Danville to manufacture
the nation’s first T-rail. The
demand for the T-rails grew and significantly
contributed to the growth of the
railroads, providing employment for over
1,100 people in the community.
By 1853, Danville had three rolling mills
producing T-rails, five blast furnaces and
four foundries. However, the iron industry
began to decline following the 1873
Depression and the country’s conversion to
steel. The mills continued operation
through the turn of the century,
ceasing operation at the end of the
Great Depression.
The community’s wealth was demonstrated
in the architect-designed mansions and commercial
structures. Public and civic buildings
sprang up, many which still stand in the
Danville Historic District. During this period,
the town was home to many industrialists,
such as Henry Rempe, who invented a
self-winding clock in 1901, and J. F. Lavigne,
an owner of the F.Q. Hartman Silk Mill in
the mid-1910s. Hartman was instrumental
in the construction of a recreation center at
201 Mill Street for women employed at his
mill. Christopher Sholes, an inventor of the
typewriter, worked at The Danville News in
the late 1800’s and perfected the QWERTY
keyboard, still in use today.
townsfolk asking for transportation in her
Hupmobile to the hospital in Bloomsburg
and decided to build a community hospital.
The formal dedication ceremonies were
delayed while the hospital dealt with an
outbreak of typhoid fever. The hospital,
which opened in 1915, cared for 761
patients from 52 Pennsylvania communities
its first year. By 1920, the facility treated
patients from 156 communities. Geisinger
Mifflinburg Telegraph
Mifflinburg
Settled in the late 1700’s by German immigrants,
the historic town of Mifflinburg is
nestled in a valley with some of the richest
farmland in Pennsylvania. The town grew
in both size and wealth at the turn of
the century when it became known as
“Buggy Town” — and with good reason.
Mifflinburg had 75 buggy makers and
exported 5000 buggies annually throughout
the United States. It was prestigious
back then to be driving a “Mifflinburg
Buggy-beautifully crafted in the German
tradition.” It was at this time that the
homes in the historic area were built, many
with painted brick and ornate gingerbread
trim. Enjoy the carefully preserved architecture
as you stroll the streets and browse the
charming downtown shops.
You can return to this classic buggy era
by visiting the Mifflinburg Buggy
Museum, the only historic buggy factory
in the country. The museum is located at
the corner of Green and 6th streets.
Some of Mifflinburg’s downtown shops
attract customers from all over the country,
such as Mary Koons Quilts (Amish quilts)
and Design Tiles (hand painted tiles). Many
other shopping delights line the main street
— from lovely gift shops to butcher shops.
Nearby, even more unique shops await you:
Country Farm and Home (a garden and gift
Becky Hagenbaugh
center), Penns Creek Pottery, Gabriel’s gifts
and many others. If the shopping whets
your appetite, you may choose from pizza or
subs to a quiet lunch or dinner at Carriage
Corner Restaurant amid the historic
Mifflinburg Buggies. For a change of pace,
you can take Mifflinburg’s Self-Guided
Walking Tour through the historic area
(call (570)966-1666 or (570)966-3873 for
maps). Hiking and outdoor activities are
popular with Mifflinburgers and visitors
alike. Buffalo Creek and the Koons Hiking
Trail meander along the north edge of town.
At one point, the creek is crossed by the
Hassenplug Covered Bridge (you can travel
over this covered bridge on north 3rd
Street). Just a few miles south of town is
Penns Creek, one of the premiere fishing
streams in Pennsylvania. The mountains
to the west, north and south are a hunter’s
paradise for turkey, whitetail and black bear.
Mifflinburg is rich in farmland and, since
many farms are Mennonite-owned, it is
not unusual to find yourself sharing the
road with horses and buggies. In the
summer months, you will find many
roadside vegetable stands with just-picked
farm produce for sale.
Mifflinburg’s Annual Events
Buggy Day Festival
June
Each year, Mifflinburg celebrates its
“Buggy Town” heritage with its Buggy Day
Festival, held the Saturday prior to the
4th of July. Activities take place in and
around the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum.
The festival includes food, crafts, entertainment
demonstrations and horse and
buggy rides. The Mifflinburg Heritage and
Revitalization Association, The Mifflinburg
Buggy Museum and the Borough of
Mifflinburg invite you to come and enjoy
this special event... and to come back again
to enjoy other events and Mifflinburg’s
friendly hospitality.
The Fourth of July Celebrations
The 4th of July is an old-fashioned family
day held in the Mifflinburg Community
Park. A 5K Run for adults and a “Kids
Fun Run” begin a fun-filled day that
includes a Pet Parade, the Kiwanis Chicken
Barbecue, games, an evening concert and
a great fireworks display.
Blueberries and Bluegrass Festival
July
Annually, on the third Friday in July, the
Blueberries and Bluegrass Festival is held
in the Community Park at 6 p.m. Among
the many delicious foods available, you can
enjoy a German sausage sandwich, freshsqueezed
lemonade and blueberries prepared
every way imaginable, including
“blueberry whoopee pies”.
Economic Profile
Population and Statistics
The Greater Susquehanna Valley provides
plentiful opportunities for both business
development and entrepreneurial growth.
Our dedicated workforce, advanced
infrastructure, strategic location and
world-class colleges and universities all
contribute to the region’s stable economic
growth. From its inception as one of the
country’s earliest trading outposts and
agrarian settlements, to its emergence as
a national leader in rural healthcare and
the production of value-added wood
products, the Greater Susquehanna Valley
continues to adapt to global economic
changes while offering a uniquely distinct,
community-centered quality of life.
From small-to medium-size family-owned
businesses to nationally recognized industry
leaders, the Valley maintains a diverse
economic base in manufacturing, agriculture,
retail trade, healthcare and education.
Manufacturing - The Greater
Susquehanna Valley shares a rich manufacturing
history. From the nation’s first iron
mills in Danville to the country’s largest
buggy manufacturing center in Mifflinburg,
manufacturing continues to shape the landscape
of the Valley. With one out of every
four residents engaged in manufacturing
employment, the Valley produces a variety
of goods from custom kitchen cabinets,
doors, furniture and modular homes to
pharmaceutical drugs, playground equipment,
recreational vehicles and high-end
apparel. Some of the top manufacturing
employers include Pennsylvania House,
Wood-Mode, Inc., Merck & Co., Inc.,
Ritz-Craft, Inc., Yorktowne Cabinets,
Conestoga Wood Specialties, Sunbury
Textile Mills, Thor America, Inc. and
Playworld Systems.
Agriculture - The Valley’s high quality
of life is in large part due to its agricultural
heritage. The fertile lands once inhabited
by such Native American tribes as the
Susquehannock and Shikellamy have yielded
an agricultural lifestyle and agri-business
community that continues to demonstrate
the value of a region “borne from the
land.” With more than 2,290 farms
producing over $160 million annually,
agriculture remains the backbone of the
Valley’s distinctive quality of life.
16 Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce
Indeed, the Valley’s agriculture and livestock
production continue to make
Pennsylvania one of the nation’s leading
agricultural states. And, as agriculture
has changed, so too has an industry that
created such leading agri-businesses as
Weis Markets, Furman Foods, Farmland
National Beef and Kreamer Feed, Inc.
Retail Trade - Whether you enjoy
the distinctive character of “main street”
shopping found in our historic downtown
communities of Danville, Lewisburg,
Mifflinburg, Selinsgrove and Sunbury or
the spacious, modern retail convenience of
the Susquehanna Valley Mall, the Greater
Susquehanna Valley offers a variety of
intimate, retail shopping opportunities
that can satisfy every consumer taste.
Health Care
Advanced, quality health care is not just a
personal necessity, it’s a vital ingredient to
making the Greater Susquehanna Valley a
great place to live, work and play. Unlike
other rural communities, residents of our
Valley know that they don’t have to leave the
region to access world-class, personal care.
COMMUNITY HOSPITALS
For more than 75 years, Evangelical
Community Hospital has promised and
delivered the very best service to its
patients and their communities by providing
compassionate and accessible health
care. Ever since three physicians, along
with other community supporters, established
Evangelical in 1926, it has maintained
its commitment to be a caring and
quality healthcare provider.
Evangelical is licensed to accommodate
Sunbury Community Hospital is an
acute-care, nonprofit community hospital
that began as the Mary M. Packer Hospital
in 1895. Originally, the hospital was
housed in a Victorian mansion on
Catawissa Avenue in Sunbury. By the
mid-20th century, community health
needs had outgrown the building and
strong community support was mounted
to build a new hospital.
The modern 5-story brick building we
know today as Sunbury Community
Hospital & Outpatient Center was
constructed on North Eleventh Street in
Sunbury in 1951. Its most recent expansion,
dedicated in 1998, features a state-ofthe-art
Outpatient Center that includes a
new surgical suite and post-anesthesia care
unit. Earlier expansions took place in 1967
and 1984.
Transportation
Transportation
Situated near major interchanges such as
Interstates 80, 81 and 180, along with
U.S. Routes 11 & 15, the Greater
Susquehanna Valley is poised to offer a
myriad of transportation opportunities.
Two local airports serve the region and the
Harrisburg International Airport is less
than an hour away.
Penn Valley Airport, located one mile
north of Selinsgrove, provides a full-service
general aviation facility. The 3800 by 75
ft., fully-lit runway with parallel taxi-way,
provides access to nearly all single and
twin-engine aircraft. The airport provides
aircraft rental, flight instruction, air charter
and single and twin engine aircraft maintenance
and repair services.
Danville/Riverside Airport, located
in Riverside, is licensed and operated by
Montour and Northumberland counties.
The airport provides major repair, tie
downs and instruction. A 3000-foot
paved runway is the newest addition
to the airport.
Union/Snyder Transportation
Alliance (USTA) is a public, non-profit
transportation alliance formed in 1979 to
provide consolidated transportation for
local human service agencies. USTA is a
branch of the Union-Snyder Community
Action Agency (CAA), one of two
30 Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce
community action programs in
Pennsylvania that began as public bodies
under the control of the county commissioners.
USTA and Union-Snyder CAA are
governed by the Joint Board of the Union
and Snyder County Commissioners. In
1981, by opening its system to the general
public, USTA made itself eligible to use
Pennsylvania State Lottery funds to cover a
percentage of the cost of trips for those
over the age of 65.
The USTA service area covers approximately
650 square miles and, on average,
has 20 vehicles, ranging from station
wagons to small transit buses, on the road
daily. While USTA’s primary service area is
Union and Snyder counties, in some cases
it is possible to cross the county lines.
USTA does provide a daily shuttle service
to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
USTA’s service is a door-to-door, reservation
only, para-transit service.
As the designated county coordinator for the
Shared-Ride Program for Senior Citizens,
USTA is able to offer transportation to those
over the age of 65 for a nominal fee. USTA
is a recipient of funds from the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation to provide
transportation for residents of Union and
Snyder counties that are disabled, also at a
nominal fee. USTA administers the Medical
Assistance Transportation Program for the
Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare,
providing transportation to eligible residents
of Union and Snyder counties to eligible
medical appointments at no cost to the
rider. USTA contracts with many other local
agencies, providing transportation to social
service agencies and sheltered workshops.
USTA is also open to the general public at
full-fare rates.
