Certificate Programs<br />

Students wishing to pursue an AAS in General Technology with emphasis in<br />

Emergency Medical Services, should consult a Health Science advisor.<br />

Program Deadline: June 30.<br />

NOTE: 12 credit hours must be completed at <strong>Roane</strong> <strong>State</strong> in order to meet the<br />

graduation residency requirement. (See page 61)<br />

MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION<br />

The Medical Transcriptionist Program is a nine-month certificate program. In addition<br />

to classroom lecture and transcription practice, two days a week are spent during<br />

the second semester in a health care facility affording the student valuable work experience<br />

in medical transcription. Graduates obtain employment in hospitals, clinics, doctor’s<br />

offices, and transcription services. Graduates are eligible to take the American<br />

Association for Medical Transcription certificate examination. MDT courses must be<br />

taken in sequence.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

1. Submit an official copy of high school transcript or GED scores or college transcript.<br />

2. Recommend typing speed of 45 words per minute; typing/keyboarding skills are<br />

required. Basic knowledge of computer/word processing functions (recommended<br />

COLL 1020 or CST 170) is required.<br />

3. Pass a high school level grammar, punctuation and spelling preadmission test.<br />

4. Completed RSCC application and admission requirements for special student<br />

category.<br />

5. Completed Health Science application.<br />

6. Completed health form.<br />

7. Be accepted by the Health Science Admissions Committee.<br />

8. Acute hearing required.<br />

Retention Policies<br />

Students’ grades will be evaluated at the end of each semester by the Health Science<br />

Admissions committee. A student must maintain the following standards or he/she will<br />

be dismissed from his/her respective program:<br />

1. A grade of “C” or better in each specialty course.<br />

2. Completion of specialty courses as specified by the degree checklist. A student<br />

must be able to complete courses with the class in which he/she was admitted.<br />

A student who cannot graduate with the class in which he/she was admitted will<br />

be dropped from that class and must re-apply to a subsequent class.<br />

3. Evidence of malpractice insurance and physical examination must be provided<br />

prior to clinical training.<br />

The RSCC policy of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Sanctions applies to all students<br />

regardless of the program in which they are enrolled. In cases where alcohol and<br />

drug violations occur, disciplinary action, as well as the decision whether to test for<br />

alcohol or drugs, will be processed through the Dean of Health Sciences and the office<br />

of the Dean of Student Services and Multicultural Affairs.
